Love it. Owning a Disco 1 in socal is prime. Thing can go anywhere. Repairs are pretty inexpensive compared to owning newer Rovers & given the shared underpinning with Range Rover Classic & Defender Series parts are more than abundant.
I've got a 95 too and I love it. I will keep her forever. Right now I am remedying the things I have let slip and neglected over the past 14 years I have owned it. It's got almost 200k on it and only had the starter and alternator(x2) go out. The shot of the underside made me laugh, it looks just like mine -oily!
Still plenty of life left then! George's got 213,000 now days, and is on the third starter since I got him (The second one was damadged due to a bone head installation mistake I made)
I want one so badly! Older cars are the best. I decided to buy an 03 Volvo S80 over having a car payment on something new. I feel you on the high maintenance thing but mines almost at 200,000 miles and I love him. Named him Sven since he’s Swedish. Nice vid mate, cheers 🤙🏼
Yes indeed...your thoughts and George align with my feelings with my old 97 Rangie...an old handsome mule of a vehicle so comfortable still and its stance is timeless, geared to go where others need enhancing to do the same and stubbornly I resist the calls to move it on even after 420k on the odo. A new one is easy to get,a not so new one is easier to get...but where will I find the joy and precious memories of what it and I have done together. Yep...no matter what you have its yours to feel how you feel about it.
Got 2 2000 td5 D2 and 1970 series 3 200tdi love em both, Always said a car is just a tool A to B but quickly changed with Land Rover, they are now family members LOL definitely own personalities
Love the name. Ours 2003 Disco II is affectionately known as "Liza", as in Liza Doolittle from "My Fair Lady". "She's a good girl you know. She washed her hands and face before she came..." I truly love your description of "old Land Rovers"....you are right on all points, especially the part about Stockholm Syndrome, definitely in this family! Safe travels to you!
Thank you I know now I'm not alone my friends don't understand (or wife) but my 94 tdi300 puts a smile on my face everything I drive it. It is impossible for me to feel in a hurry while driving her mines called the limo
I have a 96 Disco 1, same color and everything. In the process of finishing up an LS swap with a 5speed in it. Even with the old 4.0 V8 in it it's absolutely the most fun vehicle I've ever driven! I could imagine it not being so fun if one can't do their own repairs tho lol
Nice video, great scenery. 1996 D1 daily driver in Kenya here. Mine is a 300TDI with a 5-speed. Even less power than your V8 but decent mpg (considering how expensive fuel is in Kenya that's a plus). The D1 was marketed as a rugged and basic utility vehicle in most of the world. A vastly cheaper alternative to the RRC with the offroad capability of a Defender minus the painful seating position. LR positioned it in the US as a luxury vehicle which was a mistake. It should have competed with the Jeep Cherokee and Ford Explorer.
I own a Land Rover 11 2002 forest green and I love it purchased brand new I will never sell it is some much fun to drive specially in winter here in chicago.
Dam it! Just when I thought I had talked myself out of a LR ( I have been looking at half a dozen) this video pops up and makes them sound cute as a basket full of puppies! Dam it ! Where’s the auto trader?
Awesome job describing these undependable slow gas hogs...i wouldnt trade grover for any Toyota. Owned my RRC for 3 years and 15k miles. This is not a daily by any means, but sure is damn fun to drive.
They have character and I think they make us feel better about ourselves. Not in a snobby way but in a “This is a special needs car, that others would walk away from, so I’m special, too” sort of way. I call mine my Rescue Rover, like a shelter cat. Or, like he says, Stockholm Syndrome, since it is my second one.
Hi, I just wanted to know where you bought the seat cover on the driver seat in your car, and if it could be bought online. I have a LRD1 just like youuuu
Great question, the ones I have on my D1 actually came with the truck when I bought it, and are horrible quality to be honest. I just leave them in because they do the job well enough. I believe they come from O'Rileys in the states? If you want something higher quality I've been looking at picking up a set of Knightsbridge overland seat covers
Great video pal!!How many miles can it run?? Im looking forward to buy an used one with 300.000 kms of use( i dont Know the conversion) Greetings from Chile!!
Thank you! The roof rack is a Safety Devices "Highlander". I'm not sure if they are produced anymore, but they are the consumer version of the racks they used for the Camel Trophy (Just gutter mounted VS roll cage mounted like the CT discovery's)
Thanks for the link, researched the company that does the roof racks, on the internet.. Your tyres fit perfectly too, without being too ostentatious ... love the stance of your vehicle? Have you put a 1 inch lift on it Are you running 235/85/16 or 245/75/16.... Love your car full stop.....great stock look for a D1. You may have to do a setup video for those of us who have early D1's
I'm glad you like it so much! It's been a labor of love, I've tried to keep it looking somewhat stock, just brought out to its full "expedition" potential. It's heavily based off the Camel Trophy trucks. Tires are 235/85/r16 Cooper ST maxx's fitted on the stock alloys Suspension wise, it's running HD springs paired with Bilstein stocks, on paper this is meant to be "no lift" but after settling in, fully loaded to GVWR it sits about .5-1" higher then stock. The front bumper has the areo-dam removed and the side caps cut to match, and the rear quarter panels have a light Camel cut to ensure the tires don't rub at full articulation. I may one day do a set-up video about the discovery, but there is some more shots of it + how I use it in another of my videos "Wildlife Videography In The Carrizo Plain | Out The Front Door"
@@ramblingstrong9834 watched it and going to apply the same rig setup as you have, you havent bastardised the d1 look, it pays full respect to expedition and the camel trophy while being minimalist, functional and still lots of fun... The foldable bed at the rear! I will need to rewind and f fwd several times to see what youve done there..attention to simplicity and detail. I look forward to the next installment ..will dm you when ive started my project
Hi nice video, transfer case whine is likely low fluid, and as you may or may not know the temp gauge is useless it is functionally an idiot light. As you have a D1 you should research options for adding a water temp gauge. But enjoy it they tend go most anywhere, and as to fuel yea hi-way robbery kind a of sums it up perfectly. I have an 04 and it has been great.
Thank you! Luckily I know that the whine comes from my D1 having an early LT230 that has straight cut teeth so it whines even when topped up. For the cooling I'm all to aware of the early LR cooling issues due to my time spent in deserts, to help with it I run a lower temp thermostat and a severe duty fan clutch
Well regear it for those 32" tires and you will be fine uphills :P Stock it runs on 235/70r16 way samller tire better matched with high gears in diffs.
You're absolutely right, however it struggled on the hills with the original tire size as well. I went ahead and redid the heads and cams and added in a stage 1 Crower cam at the same time as doing the axels and bigger tires, so between that and the bigger tires I'm back basically where I was with the tired motor and smaller tires.
Giving the engine a once over is worth it, if you're running stock tires they can keep up with traffic albeit with a bit of struggle. Personally I just embrace it and fall back into second or third gear and keep the revs low and just enjoy the climb!
I laughed ironically at this - and really enjoyed it. I had a Disco 2, and now a Disco 3. I heard somewhere that they are the worst possible vehicles for off-road. They are incredible capable, eat up almost anything you can throw at them. But they can be unreliable and expensive to maintain. And you fall in love with them irrationally. And so you cannot stop pouring money into them. It is how I feel about my Disco 3! My Ella.
Yup. I have a Discovery II and while I secretly lust for a 130 Defender... well I suppose I probably should have two Land Rovers, at least one of them might not be a piece of shit on any given day.
Look after your Discos and they WILL BE RELIABLE. Isn’t it about time we ceased using that word unreliable? ALL vehicles need regular maintenance to continue carefree driving. If you can’t spin a spanner, join a Landy Club and/or find a grease jockey who owns an LR. These days you can find UA-cam videos on how to fix anything. Enjoy your vehicles and look after them. For salty road users, have the chassis and underbody regularly inspected for signs of cancer and treat it accordingly. Cheers 👍🏻🙏🦘
Couldn't have said it better! And these older vehicles generally don't have highly stressed drive trains, so they give plenty of warning time via noise and vibrations if something deep is going wrong.
Great description of Land Rover ownership. It's more like owning a dog than driving a car.
I'm looking to buy a first gun Disco myself, and this doesn't throw me off a bit. It makes me want one even more! Great vid! Thanks!
Love it. Owning a Disco 1 in socal is prime. Thing can go anywhere. Repairs are pretty inexpensive compared to owning newer Rovers & given the shared underpinning with Range Rover Classic & Defender Series parts are more than abundant.
That fact (shared underpinning) is what I love about these.

I love my discovery 2
The Discovery 2s bring a nice level of extra refinement to these lumbering machines!

I'm inclined to agree!
Just got my 98 Disco after watching the Camel vids on youtube xD time to take to the desert... Let's go.

About 50,000 D1s were imported to the US, I’m told. All LHD since we drive on the Right side of the road.
