- My seat belt buckle stopped working in my Volkswagen Jetta, the replacement unit is $140 so I decided to fix it myself. It ended up being a pretty easy fix, I designed and 3d printed a replacement plastic piece.

You can use a 3 D printer for free in the maker lab at the local university where I live... I have seen maker labs at libraries for free also.

Mine broke and I went to my local car scrap yard and got a full seatbelt buckle for £5. Definitely saved me buying a 3D printer.

there are 3d printing services which can do it for you for quite cheap. like printing photos. You dont need to buy a printer.

In the old days, we'd just have used a dremel and a piece of your kid's heaviest-duty junkiest plastic toy that he never plays with (which he would notice missing 10-minutes after you grab the toy to cannibalize it)...

An impressive use of a 3D printer - bravo!
This inspired me to finally get to the one in the rear bench of my VW T5. I expected to find this problem, but in the T5 the seatbelt latch is secured with a wire rope, which had slid up and was blocking the mechanism. Tip for anyone with a seatbelt latch on a wore cable- give the buckle a hard tug to pull the wire rope back where it is supposed to be before cracking over the black plastic cover.

how did you remove the plastic casing? mine won't come off!
I have a little different problem, a seat belt in my car has little wider tongue than the receiver, is it possible to dremel the red plastic to allow the wider tongue? (looks like previous owner changed seat of different year)

Hey! I was wondering, can I just remove the sensor thread? How did you remove the seatbelt from the car? Also removing the whole seat?
If I recall correctly, I did have to remove the seat. Then there was one bolt holding in the buckle. If you just remove the sensor wire, the seatbelt light will stay on, on the dashboard. I think you can jumper it with a resistor to make the car think it's not unplugged.

Bro my seatbelt wouldn’t latch but after hundreds of tries it finally latched however the airbag light turned on the dashboard. Could the sensor in the seatbelt latched have gotten stuck or something got out of place. When you dismantled your seatbelt did you see an airbag sensor in there?
Late reply but....there should not be an airbag sensor in the seatbelt latch. The switch that detects if the seatbelt is latched or not is inside it, and it can definitely get stuck in the open or closed position.

It's not the plastic bit that stops your seat belt from working it's a metal flat spring on the side of the buckle. I took a flat head screw driver and pull the flat spring like metal out test the belt works great light is off.

You shouldn't fast forward through the parts where you are taking it apart and putting it back together. People aren't going to have the exact same issue as you and it would be nice to see how it all goes together. Thank goodness yt has slow mo but it's still faster than I would have liked.
I figured people would get bored with the video showing too much detail, but that's good feedback I'll take into account.
For that non-security essential plastic part, it's a great idea (if you're really sure after 1000 connects it won't get thinner and just appear to latch correctly but only be partially connected). For other parts, like that latch or some other metallic part, stick with the 140 bucks part, it can save your life in case of a crash. For brakes and security elements of the car, always stick with original parts. For the rest, aftermarket ftw. Same advice for people that are using buckle fakers to stop the annoying ding the car makes trying to save your life. PS: Even if your sensor is not properly detecting your buckle as being connected, your airbags won't deploy in case of a crash as it can explode in your face while it touches the steering wheel.

I'm not currently selling them, but I could potentially print some and list them on eBay or similar. there are lots of sites you can upload a file to and order the part printed for a low cost as well, good luck with the repair.
Fantastic but it would be cheaper for the replacement seat belt as a 3D printer is a little more expensive, great fix though...

There are lots of websites that sell one off springs. A few of them have a "spring finder" tool where you can put in the rough dimensions and it'll give you options to buy. Also Ive seen at many hardware stores in the US I've seen little spring kits you can buy for ~$10-15 and try out different sizes until one works.

A few spring companies are: Springfast, The Spring Store, and Quick Spring. I just did a search for "compression spring assortment" on Amazon and found lots of kits. You could see which kits have springs similar in size to the one you need. Or put in exact dimensions in at The Spring Store and find options for similar replacements

What specific glue did you use?
I believe it was a 2 part epoxy adhesive designed for plastics. If you look up "2 part epoxy for plastic" you should find many options that will work.

well it shows how much VW are willing to waste, all the parts, metal, plastic, just for a cheap 1cent bit of plastic. And I am going to save the planet by sitting in a winter coat with the heating turned off?
It's easy just buy a 3K machine and save $160 bucks. No problem, makes sense. You also have to know how to use a computer and hook it up, no problem I will get my nephew will just cause me a week of use of my vehicle and $60 worth of gas, makes sense.

You could always chisel one out of a piece of plastic, but nowadays an Ender 3 Pro can be had for $100 USD. Cheaper to buy a whole printer than a new buckle!
