- Cannondale Habit 2 - This hardtail from Cannondale was just recently announced. Today we take a first look, weigh it, measure the geometry and talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly. I love reviewing bikes under $1500, and this one has some great features for the price. Which features are your favorite?

Great video Steve, and please, yes keep doing the geometry measurements. You are the only one that I know of that keeps the manufacturers honest!
💯
agreed, salsa making measurements 'at sag' for example throws everything off
I'm glad to see The Advent X being spec'd on more bikes. Like you, I've got it on two higher end builds and when I do frame up builds, it's what I use. Diamondback has a new bike coming out and it is specc'd on the entry version, but they went with an NX/SX eagle specc on the next tier up. I would have used it on both and saved a lot of weight and better performance.
Absolutely love advent x
This looks like a really good bike for the price. I have two Trek Roscoe 7's. One is teel and one is black. I like them so much, but this Canondale looks real nice. I don't even know if my Roscoe 7 can handle a 29 x 3.0. Steve do you know if the Trek Roscoe 7, 8 and 9 can handle plus size tires? I am currently using the stock 2.6 tires. I like them alot. But wow, look at this Canondale using 3.0 tires. That is nice. Perhaps, the longer chainstay allows for the 3.0 tire.
I bought one of my Trek Roscoe 7's for about $1,899, then I picked up a second one for $1,649 so I can ride with others who may not have a mountain bike. Plus, Two bikes also provides for spare parts.
But this Canondale is sweet. I like the nice geometry too. I would upgrade it over time. That is what I will do as my Roscoe's need parts. I already have Ergon grips and orange pedals on my Teel Trek Roscoe 7. It comes with the Recon Silver RL which works fine for me, and I am 240 or so lbs. I just put the fork psi up to 153 psi. It is good. It can handle up to 200 psi.
But I do not know about the Judy. It might not handle my 240 lbs. like the Recon Silver RL can on the Roscoe 7. So if I had that Canondale I would upgrade it lots of good parts, but I would wear out the stock parts first or keep them as a backup. The problem is that dropper might get replaced before it wore out.
So I probably made the right choice with the Trek Roscoe 7 in a large size. I have long legs so the dropper is fine on the Trek! It works smoothly enough for me.
@@thomashelander6753 I can't remember if I measured max tire size on the trek. If I did, I would have included it in the roscoe 9 first look vid I filmed.
So I've had a Walmart bike for a couple years and just rode around my block mainly. Went to my local bike shop about 2 months ago. They recommended this bike and a few others (price variations).
I ended up going with the habit ht 2. First, the paint is absolutely stunning! Light vs dark shade pics make it appear two different colors.
But for budget friendly, at least get a dropper, and some decent parts.
I went from a 20 minute super casual ride, to trails and can't stop! Already put in 131 miles this month!!! Great bike, got some complaints. But, I'm sure me being new to trail rising and real bikes, is probably the real reason lol.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have been!
Congrats, and welcome to the exciting world of MTB.
I purchased this bike, and I’m not sure if I’m going to keep it. The internal cable management is horrible, especially where the cables exit near the handlebar. I thought that the plastic port covers were actually screwed into the aluminum of the frame like Specialized often do, but they actually screw down a small cheap piece of plastic that is supposed to act like a clamp on the inside of the frame. The port cover design is very brittle and will likely break within the first year on both sides. I tilted my bike upside down to hang it up, and I heard something slide down towards the fork. I removed the fork, and found a piece of black plastic near the headtube. It took me a minute to figure out were it came from, and it turned out to be one of the plastic pieces that is supposed to seal the upper cable port. Prefabricated holes or a rubber grommet would have been a much better idea, and would be much less likely to break within the frame. And if these pieces brake, I’d imagine that they wouldn’t be easy to get from Cannondale. In addition to this, my rear brake cable was also routed incorrectly like Steve’s, and this was purchased from a REI store. I also noticed that there wasn’t any lube used on the headset. It was bone dry. Outside of all these little issues, it rides fine, but Cannondale needs to look at their quality control, and I don’t want to have to deal with the cable port covers routinely braking due to poor engineering.
Conte’s Bikes has a great deal on this bike right now. $950 seemed like a steal so I just bought one! Thanks for this amazing review!
My xc scalpel has a 120mm dropper. Perfect and suits that bike. For a rowdier bike though, that’s not much, all my other bikes are 210s
Dude, I totally agree with you. HT's need to be affordable. I'd like to know your opinion on the Marin San Quentin 2 (2022), because I think its so much better then the 2023 model.
I want to know the weight! I want to see how it compares to my Stumpy
For most of us, regular riders spending over 3000 on any bike is a poor financial decision.
I’m deciding between Norco Fluid HT2, Rocky Mountain Growler and this. Never been a big fan of Cannondale but this bike looks awesome and has components that won’t need immediately replaced with is huge to me
I just cross shopped this with the Salsa Rangefinder Shimano Deore 1x12. Has shimano discs, RST Aerial 120mm. Bike just had better quality components. Bike feels so stable yet nimble. As much as I love Cannondale and wanted one I gave Salsa a chance.
The Cannondale Cujo with 3.0 tires was my favorite hardtail I've ridden. It didn't have a rear thru axle but the rear chainstays made it so soft
I just sold my sons cujo24. Was an excellent bike. It was beat though. Replaced it with a Commencal Ramones 24.
Overall it seems encouraging to me that the big manufacturers are making better entry-level hardtails with modern standards and decent components, though there is definitely some room for further improvement that wouldn't necessarily add much cost.
Someone's having way too much fun on that Canyon Stoic 😉
Jokes aside, great looking bike, but I'm looking into the Ragley Marley 2023 - Big Al has completely different geo to what it used to be, in case you're not aware of. I sent Ragley an email regarding what length fork they use for their geo data and made it clear I was interested in the brand thanks to your reviews. I also suggested they send you their updated geo models for this year's, now that'd be awesome 🤞🏼
Two great videos coming out with the Cannondale and the Canyon. Good stuff!
Would you recommend the Cannondale Habit HT2 over the Roscoe 6? Or recommend another bike in this price range? I'm asking bc I'm clueless with specs.
Why are you saying that the Roscoe 7 is a competitor for this bike? It's significntly more expensive. Why not the Roscoe 6?
i'm about to get my first serious hardtail and it's the habit ht 3 and it's on sale here in italy for 769€ it's originally 1099€
Dang. I'm pretty interested in this as my first mtb especially with that cherry color. But that dropper situation is really annoying and I would like to see the $1500 version come with a bit nicer fork. If this rides good might have to buy one. Even if it rides bad I might still buy one then canibalize the parts to build up the new 2023 Ragley Big Al frame because I think that would be cheaper and more convient than buying all the parts on my own especially once I recoup some money from the frame, fork, and dropper that I don't want.
This frame looks as good to me as my 7.1 Chameleon and for me, that is saying a lot. Excited to watch the ride review.
I love that touch at the end where you spin the wheel so the background to the montage is asmr for cyclists. Awesome editing. And awesome channel. When I'm ready to pull the trigger on my £2k cycle2work scheme, I'll be joining your patreon for advice!
I find the geo info really useful so I'd love to see you continue with that.
I really like what I'm seeing and hearing about this one so far. Can't wait to see it out on the trail. Thanks for the indepth measurements!
I looked at this bike on their website but the geometry is a bit strange - on paper at least. Size L has similar reach and top tube measurements to many competitors size M's. Yet has the same Seat tube length as a size L. For such a slack (claimed) head angle, it appears to have insufficient reach.
They definitely took a different approach to geo on this one. Less reach and more chainstay. So your body will be more centered between front and back. There are pros and cons to this, but you're spot on. It's not as long in the reach as many other brands.
Ive been a Cannondale fan all my life, but they haven't had a decent hardtail in my country for years.
Been riding a Commencal Meta HT for a while now, and it's been like heaven.
Honestly, this bike looks like it could just be my new favorite, .... beefed up and made more trail ready,
I'm in
Epic T-shirt Steve!! I’d totally wear it 😊👍🏻
How much does this bike weight, I cant find it on the internet
Currently have the older cannondal trail se 3 hardtail, however vert tempted to move onto the newer habit ht
Habit 2 and 3 got the Trans X Dropper with ( 120mm Size M and 130mm Size L Dropper) Habit 1 got the Cannondale Down Low Dropper with 150mm Size M and 170mm Size L
Habit 1 isn't available in the US
This could be a really good one codis to Cannondale. Great video !
Glad to see you got on of these, excited to watch your ride review and see how you get along with those massive chainstays!
It would be cool if you did a back to back test of stock vs upgraded parts to show how much better the bike can get as you improve it.
I've done that a few times in the past with different bikes. I call it getting "experiMENTAL." When I'm reviewing these bikes, 90% of the review talks about the frame, since everything else can be swapped.
The Judy is actually a 30mm stanction fork. The Recon is the 32mm stanction fork that in the 29 boost version can go up to 150mm of travel.
Thanks for the clarification.
I always wanted a "Beast of the East" back in the 90's when I first saw one. When Cannondale came out with the new version several years ago in blue, plus tires, and a Lefty Fork, I was trying to get one, but was unable. I hope they revive the name and come out with another version.
My hardtail came with a 130mm dropper and it will fit a 170mm from what I measured and used the compatibility calculator on PNW's website. So when my current dropper fails, I will be getting a 170mm. I think bike companies put one size to "fit" all because they buy bulk and get a discount.
I loved the beast of the east remake. I'd love to see them do a modern take on it with 29x3.0 tires and geo closer to this.
Thats how its put together out the box ? Only need the tire and the handle bar ?
You hit everything box that I was thinking of. I'm looking at the Habit 3 and in my opinion, its a lot better than the Habit 2 but at the same time isn't, as I'm looking at the price and spec differences on both I would recommend changing out the forks as the Habit 3 has a Suntour coil and the Habit 2 has that Judy which just a small correction isn't a 32mm stanchion fork it's a 30mm, and also the dropper feels cheap and the drop length between the sizes is to short. But also looking at the sheet the wheels are decently big change, the Habit 3 has a i25 rim with Shimano cup and cone hubs where the Habit 2 has a i30 rim with cartirdge bearing hubs. Just some things to be looking at if you are looking at the 2 different models but overall both are solid.
Thanks for the clarification. I had forgotten that people make stanchions smaller than 32mm. That's wild.
@@hardtailparty Yea for sure
I was also comparing the Habit 2 and Habit 3. Did you end up getting any of them? I was told the Habit 2 is much better bc of the air fork. But overall I have been told that the Roscoe 6 is better than both of those
@@Jose-sy1je I already have a Hardtail that is better than any of those options so I didn't get one also the Roscoe 6 is a bit better
@@matrixracing8268 So you think the Roscoe 6 Is a good choice or is there a better bike you would recommend?
If you put a 29x3.0 on it becomes a Bad Habit. The BH came out a bit early right before boost if I remember correctly and you had to do a pretty big dish on the rear wheel.
I'm so glad Cannondale is back to regular dish wheels for this.
Finally!165cranks❤
For those wondering, you can fit a 190 dropper. I have a 190mm KS Rage I on my medium frame and it works just fine. I"m thinking about swapping that out for the 240mm oneup V3
I once did a video about tubeless set up and I left the rim strip in. Wow did people not like that....😂
I still have the bike 4 years later after going tubeless, Surly Lowside, and the tape has kept it sealed all this time.
I generally take the rim strip out before taping, but the Lowside has 35mm width rims with a rim strip down the middle in a low channel on the rim so I left it in there....🤷♂️
Awsome knowledge i found here! Thank you sooo much. Just ordered the Habit 3 for 850€.
My first bike since 10 years! I am so stoked.
Is it possible to switch the dropper and put the old dropper into my dad's 20 year old Wichita Eagle hard tail?
Does the Habit 2 and 3 really have different wheels?
What fork would you recommend to fit 3.0 Tubeless in the Future?
How much does the bike weigh?
Great looking bike. No clue why they didn't have at least a 150mm dropper, though, since it doesn't typically cost any more. Also surprised they don't have a spec that has a good fork (like a Bomber Z2).
Only at start of 2023 I switched from my old fashioned faithful but scetchy 26”xc ht to 29”. Chosen a Kona Hei Hei cr fully and enjoyed everything but the fear to cause a frame damage.
Half a year later I had upgraded wheelset, drivetrain, handlebar and dropper, mostly out of curiosity if that would make the bike even better. Btw I am a bike mechanic.
Then I decided to have an an alu hardtail that could have the obsolete parts of the Kona, just as a backup bike. Got 2nd hand “cheap” Planet X Jack Flash 29 and a Fox 34 130mm fork. Made my “custom buid” with it. Only a few testrides later I realized that it was my favourite over the Kona!! It has quite the same geo as this Cannondale Habit HT eg 65deg ht 445mm cs, steep sa and it really is a capable comfy do it all mtb!!! So I have some proof now that your reviews are solid and spot on. Thanks for all of yr efforts and all the best with yr health recovery!
I'm only 130lbs and it took me less than 5 rides until I blew fork seal on Judy....if you're gonna have any airtime, Judy gotta be replaced almost immediately
I’m currently in the market and looking at three bikes .
Fathom 1 or 2 but front
shock turned me off.
The fuse sport 27.5
however its 2400 . I cant get the fuse 27.5 and spend the extra 1300 on better components.
Canyon stoic 4
Can you install a 27.5 wheelset with this? If yes what would be the fork travel to minimize geometry change? Love you videos btw
With cannondale cycling prophet all employees of cannondale dealership stores can get these on trade at 15% off trade value the trail 1 works out at £650, pretty good deal for a deore 12 spd and shimano quadpots with a dropper only thing that lets it down is a rockshox 35 silver that I’m gunna swap for a pike ultimate when I get it, possibly rebuild the rear wheel as 27,5 for a mullet. Should be a little shredder
My Judy Air works better than my Reba. I might got a bad Reba, it is such a soulless fork. It is pretty light weight, but it's like a lazy teeanager.
dang, not bad for 1500 except for that judy. I thinks it's lame any bike company wouldn't support your channel for their reviews or first-looks, everybody benefits from these videos... you do a good job examining all these bikes, especially with that geometer rack. keep up the good work 👍
Cool bike!! Reminds me of the Twostroke, with the stays joining with the top tube to make one straight line.
Comparing this to a BMC Twostroke AL 2, which does not come with a dropper, I think the BMC is a better value. What do you think?
Also, check to hear if the fork knocking is still occurring when you remove the damper knob. For some reason, this eliminated the knocking on my 2021 SID fork.
Hi Steve, have you any experience with Knolly Tyaughton steel? I am wondering what's your opinion about it?
When will you be release a first ride review? I'm looking at purchasing one but there no good ride reviews of it yet. Ive currently got a transition scout with 160mm up front for park riding, ao i want somethi g a little easier to get more distance on. Been comparing it to my Scout, and my parents Chameleon and Arc. The slack seems to be right between the the two hard tails and whay my Scout should be given the larger forks... bot sure how its going to ride with that being said.
Hi Steve, I would say just do the essentials of the geometry. Head tube seat tube, reach, maybe chain stays. Thanks for all the work!
3.0's 165 cranks dang this thing has it going on, eh! I'm excited to see you ride this pony. Greatful for your video.
Intresting frame but that fork is garbage you would need to replace as soon as you get the bike from the bike shop, in the price range is the fathom i use to own one and i can tell you is awesome and i think is less than $1500 the only thing that i would change in the fathom is 1 degree slacker HT is 66 i think would be perfect at 65 i dont know if possible whit out using more travel the crest fork is very good plush and stiff at the end you gona upgrade but you can ride that fork pretty hard not like a judy
My First mountain bike was a Schwinn High Sierra, And later I upgraded to a Cannondale M300. Maybe you can tell I'm a bit older than most on here 70. Still ride but got a fat tire Motobecaine. It's my grocery get'er have a fattire single track trailer for it with a shock on it and a set of panniers for trailer and bike. I don't own a car can't anymore. Love my bicycles/ mountain bikes. Be safe sir And thank you sir the share I sure would like to get one of these for sure, might be easier to find tires.
You mention a few times, "if you build this bike yourself". Does or will Cannondale sell bikes to the public or only bike shops? Last year I needed a part and Cannondale force me to go to a authorized shop.
Meh. Seems like they went with cheaper and odd component choices. And I’m not impressed at all with what you get for the money here.
I would love to see you get you hands on the blue pig. I ride bike park and I love it. Compared to other large name hardtails like the stoic, big Al, Marley, scout 275, and meta HT I like it the best
Cannondale needs to expand this product line or sell a frame only. There’s a lot of good stuff going on but there should be some nicer builds available. Maybe something around 2k with a full length dropper and a better fork and some other little upgrades and then something at 2500 which has the works and it basically good to go out of the box.
high hopes! not sure i'd dream too much on $2K wheelset but i expect it's a good candidate as a keeper. definitely go tubeless and lose a pound +, and if keeping it longterm, maybe upgrade the fork and lose another pound or two before real long and have a quality ride :)
Would be curious to see this as a mullet setup. 29/27.5 x 2.8 ?
I do not like Cannondale's customer service. I have a Giant P.hantom and for the price it does well
I love the way you always reference the uk when talking hardtails and tyre/ mud clearance 😂😂😂 but it is very true 👍 and quite a number of us uk riders ride winter hardtails in the sloppy months .
Love the huge stack seriously. For dropper I’d probably try external 190-200mm I’m 6-3/4”, 32 N change inseam. I’d buy the lower spec to me it seems better wider wheels. And I can put that goofy fork on my 90’s geo bike and at least it’s air the higher spec no.
Rear 180 rotor cant tell if it’s on a spacer and is 160mm mount. No biggie and space front to 200mm. Then bomb the bike. Exciting to see this hard waiting for these two ride reviews.
You look like you’ve lost a lot of weight not to be offensive I’m super happy for you. I struggle with addictive personality and self worth I attend CR at church. Wish I could get all the riding in you do. But I’m okay with my local SanTan mtn. Bike park, hawes, and gold canyon was fun. So for me to see gain in a fellow brother this makes my day thank you 🙏.
😫 I wish it had external cable routeing. Looking forward to this review. As always, I love that you go through everything Geo, measurements. Sick!!
When is the ride video coming? :)
I'm glad you're excited for this one. I'm pumping out edits as fast as I can. Most reviews take 10-40 hours to edit and post.
@@hardtailparty Awesome !!
REI is having a 20% off sale at least in my area (SoCal). It’s down to $1,160.
I’m hoping you can get one of those new Scott scale 940 carbon frame hard tails in and review it. I saw they changed the geometry and some other things so it’s not as steep as it was before.
Weird that Cannondale went from pioneers to last to the party in 10years.
They are the last to make a hardcore hardtail.
Amen. Some of his bicycle prices are out of this world.
Love seeing budget hardtail offerings! Curious if you’ve looked at the current Marin Muirwoods? The geometry looks fun for a commuter bike, and could make for a good gravel grinder.
Can you do Norco fluid ht1/2
I'd love to. Hopefully one day.
Hi Steve, thank you for the absolutely great and informative video. Did you ever get a chance to trail test the bike yet?
I can’t wait to watch the ride review. I still have my Cannondale Delta V hardtail I bought in 1994. I’ve been wanting to give it a semi-modern makeover!
Great first look Steve!!! Yes please keep the geo verification in these first looks!!! It really bring it together with your likes and dislikes!!! Can’t wait for the ride review 🤘🤘👍👍
Is a steel Norco torrent worth it to throw a good wheel set on and maybe lower the front fork from 150mm to 130mm?
If the rear clears 3.0 , how much does the front fork clear?
It was a about time big companies get with the trend. Geometry is free and we are tired to have to pay some much for it.
Hola. I ride a 2020 fuse comp. Ever ride one ? Bought it new. FULL XT
yes, see my reviews on that bike.
Definitly the wrong fork for this build
A strangely spec'd bike for sure. Interested to see what you think of The 440 chainstays. Also I beleive the Judy has 30mm stanchions.
You are correct, they're 30mm stanchions! Man, I knew they looked thin, but that's wild.
The 2023 Ragley Big Al has some pretty different geo to the previous Big Al. Might be time for an updated review.
I've been trying to get one in. we'll see what happens.
ha i am running that same tire combo in 2.3 widths on my hardtail
I love seeing this dudes videos. It’s refreshing to see someone with awesome knowledge that really knows their bikes
Interesting bike, and shocked how much clearance it had with the 29x3.0's! Can't wait for the full review.
Is this bike ever getting reviewed?
I'm currently struggling with a neurological disease that prevents me from riding bikes at the moment. I wish I were healthy enough to review it right now, but it's going to take a bit of time to regain my health.
Are you planning on doing a trail review? This bike is much more accessible than the Canyon as there are Cannondale dealers who carry this model for people who want to sit on a bike before they buy it. I think this model makes Cannondale more relevant in Western PA.
Yes
I’m no expert but it seems like the frame takes a lot of cues from the newest Santa Cruz Chameleon. Is that a fair assessment? Entry level hard tails need to be affordable, good enough to hook new riders and to make sense to upgrade over time. As always, I’m looking forward to your review.
It rides quite different from a chameleon
Just found your channel, have you reviewed any Fezzari models ??
Not yet, but hopefully this year... They only have a fat bike hardtail and an xc race hardtail. nothing on the trail or enduro front.
I think that it is great that you have this site but wonder why someone would buy a bike from a shop and simply not talk to the folks who work there about what they want/need? It would seem more logical to do that especially if the shop will service their bikes. I certainly mean no ill will towards you, but building a relationship with a bike shop, car dealership whatever it is that someone is looking for makes more sense. Thanks for sharing!!
I'm all for people doing that. However, I've seen far too many people steered toward what was in stock rather than what they needed. I've seen 5'6" riders end up on L bikes because the shop didn't have a medium to sell them. I've seen people wanting a hardtail and coming out with a 160/170mm enduro bike because the shop didn't have any great hardtails. Not all shops are evil, there are some amazing shops out there. However, a trek dealer is only going to recommend treks, even if a trek isn't the right fit for that person.
nice looking hardtail no doubt! cannondale is legendary.
The fork options is a deal breaker for me. If the habit 1 came with a pike I’d be on it.
I would love to hear your take on the Giant Fathom.
Giant doesn’t typically make their bikes available to review, just do a YT search and you’ll only see reviews from people who bought the bike. I bought a 2021 29/2 and I think it’s a great bike, but I’m no expert by any means. Giant unfortunately gave the 2022/2023 models lesser drivetrains than 2021, but the frame is for sure a great platform to upgrade.
@@d.christopherhoover6153 I finally got a line on one. I hope to review it soon.
Nice video as always but whatever happened to reviewing Canyon Stoic 4 the last time?
Don't worry, I'm still reviewing it. These videos take time to film and edit. I still have to edit that review.
❤❤ yuo right I have one its amazing size
Stoked that you highlighted Advent X! I've been arguing for awhile now that microshift DTs are underrated. Quality DT yet inexpensive. Run Advent X on one of my mtb and on a commuter. Don't currently own a cannondale ht despite being a cannondale fan, but I have their synapse carbon road bike in that same black cherry color. Not eye popping but it's subtly sweet.
I've been a fan for years now. I've got a handful of videos on advent x.
Steve… would this frame be worth trying to get down to 28-29lb?
It all depends on how it rides. If the geo rides amazing, then yes. If it's stiff feeling and not great geo, then I'm going to say no.
Did you review the Fathom? Did I miss it? I'm gonna go through your videos rt now!!!
Not yet. Hopefully before the end of the year.
I think Rock Shox Judys have 30mm stanchions in fact
Great catch, you are correct.
Geo measurements always help and very much appreciated.
i'm still waiting on my LBS to get mine in and get it built, i'm very curious to see what you think of how it rides! thank you so much for going over the bike!
Just got it! LBS built it and had it adjusted to my comfort, took it for a ride today! I gotta get used to the new geometry and bigger tires!
