- Cannondale Habit 2 - This hardtail from Cannondale was recently announced. Today we take it for a ride to see what it's all about. I love reviewing bikes under $1500, and this one has some great features for the price. Which features are your favorite? What would you upgrade? Do bikes in this price range appeal to you?

I feel so fortunate to have felt well enough to ride for an hour and review this bike. I am nowhere near recovered though. It has taken over 2 weeks to recover from this 1-hour ride, and I'm still spending most of the day in bed. I appreciate the love and support through this health battle. For more details about my condition and my recovery, head over to patreon, where I share my recovery progress.
It's "So Good" to see you doing a ride review! Catching up on Patreon and sending prayers for a full and speedy recovery.
Dude, so great to see you felt well enough to ride for a review!
I have a nostalgic love of cannondale. My first mtb, which got me into the sport was their full rigid m500. This was back in 1993.
couldn't care less for the bike ! just happy to see you do a trail ride review !
Thanks for the kindness. I'm trying to review bikes more, but it takes me 2-3 weeks to recover from each one. Regardless, I've got some exciting bikes to review as soon as I feel up to it.
@@hardtailpartylooking forward to the trans am whenever you’re able
@@64Spokes me too.
@@64Spokescan't wait to see/hear Steve's take.
I came to make sure the new Trans-Am was mentioned, Stevens’s fans don’t disappoint.
Thank you soo much Steve for your hard work and dedication to our sport and industry! unbiased reviews are crucial to a serious consumer........And those of us that like to educate others about bikes!
Not related to the Cannondale, but I just got into MTB, and due to your awesome vids, I went with a Santa Cruz Chameleon for my first bike. Found a new '23 AL D for $1500. Really enjoy your content!
Welcome to the exciting sport of MTB. Thanks for watching.
Also to note, I also do think about 130MM is the perfect suspension for HT, to not turn into a giant lever... Even though I run a 160 on my Torrent, I got a custom tune (spacers/oil/valving) such that it is a highly progressive fork, so the last 30MMs are only there as a just in case and I never end up sitting deep in the travel and nose diving.
Good to see thru axle boost on entry level hardtails. Super upgradable! Hard to argue against this for a beginner.
Why is $1500 beginner? Who are the $600 bikes for then?
@@Jose-sy1jeI’d argue $1500 is about the price point for a serious beginner, with intent to get really into the hobby. The sub $1000 bikes are for an occasional rider, not planning to upgrade or grow skill beyond beginner level trails. Nothing wrong with either type, but one is upgradable as you progress and the other requires buying a new bike if you get more serious into the hobby. There’s a place for both, and wouldn’t look down on anyone for riding what they can afford.
@@sethrich5998"Serious beginner" is the perfect way to describe who this bike is for. It's got enough to get you going without breaking the bank, room for improvement without being junk out of the gate, and sets you up for a future bike without immediately pressuring you towards something better. You can't say that about other less expensive bikes.
Bike's cool, but super stoked to see you on it doing the reviews. As long as you're putting out content, and feeling good (or at least better/healthy) we are happy!!
Good to see ya "bumbling" down some trails again. We appreciate your effort to do this. Now rest up again. We hold you in our thoughts.
Always appreciate you including clips modelling good trail etiquette.
Glad to see u out riding Steve. Bless up 🎉
Nice review, I just bought the HT1 and am a beginner. I have ridden motorcycles all my life so this is a way to get back out on trails and stay in shape. I think I will enjoy upgrading this bike as needed. I also have a teenage son who I am getting into this with so I plan on having a blast and bonding with family. Thanks for the review, I saw one with a guy trashing the head tube angle without riding it saying it was too “slacker”. Good honest review!
Just took home the Mantis colored Habit HT 2 for an unreal $1000 deal from my local Schwinn dealer! Turned down a Trek Marlin 7 Gen 3 for $1200 since I couldn't pass on the HT 2! Its my first bike and I'm stoked to ride!
Good call turning down that marlin
Super Happy for you to be able to ride and review yet another hardtail. All the best to you and family
I'm liking seeing the Advent X showing up on bikes these days. Such a good drive train and a great place to save money on the build. The hard part is, people expect and want a 12spd regardless if it is any good or not.
100% agree.
I think 12 spd is more annoying than a 10 spd. It's like I'm more often in the wrong gear and I have to double shift nearly every time.
I want to run this advent x on my next build. I can’t compare 10, 11 or 12 speed, but I have found I can do without the 10 tooth sprocket. Rarely need it, just on the roadway pedaling to the trails.
Good to see you riding Steve!
Happy to see this review as I’m a Cannondale fan .
Wishing you a happy healthy healing Stevve .
I've been watching your reviews for a long time. I love your videos. I just bought this same cannondale. I've had a lot of bikes from pivot switchblade, cannondale jekyll, revel ranger, and my newest the yeti SB120. I can say with confidence I love riding the habit Ht. I plan to upgrade the fork to the lyric or fox 34. Definitely need to upgrade the hubs or the complete wheels.
Great review 👏
Happy to see you on the trail again! Great scenery from the trail too, I would love to ride some of the tamer trails in Sedona someday.
I just got the HT-3, and I am not an experienced rider, but I am older and my back requires a more upright position, I got an adjustable stem and got the handlebar a bit higher. Your comment on the short travel on the dropper is quite valid, but I was stoked to get a dropper at all for the price. I adjusted the seat as far back as I could.
Works for me for now, but I feel confident that it is a platform for upgrades when I need it.
Thank you for a great review.
Very nice! I've been waiting for this ride review as I'm currently considering adding another hardtail to my Chameleon 7.1 and the price on this one is perfect. I will strip the frame to bare within 60 minutes of getting it home and will build it up with my preferred components and it was good to hear the enthusiasm in your voice on building it up that way. Thanks for this!
It's always a pleasure to watch a new Hardtail Party video when it drops!
Bought me a Banshee Paradox, thanks to your reviews, and now, after this one I blindly trust our experience and I'm convinced thar Cannondale Habit HT3 will make a great first mtb for my girlfriend and she will be able to keep up with me on the trails with comfort and security. Thank you!
Great to see you out on the trails again and thank you for all the help on Patreon about specialized Fuse, Kona ESD, Paradox :).
Been waiting so long for this review! I've had one of these since August and it's still in its factory form with bright yellow stamp one composite pedals! It climbs great compared to my old bike and the fork seems to work fine for me!
What made you decide to get this bike instead of the Roscoe 6?
@@Jose-sy1je it was a warranty replacement
@@Jose-sy1je it was a warranty replacement
@@worshipingIAM Got you. Seems as if you recommend it
@Jose-sy1je ihad a couple of choices for the warranty but I picked this one, I have enjoyed it very much and it's doing it's job wonderfully! :)
So good to see you back riding!😊😊😊
Had my new bike choice whittled down to two options - this or the Norco Fluid HT.
Went with the Norco because of a Shimano Deore 12 speed drivetrain. The head angle is a tad steeper and the fork is 120mm but a way better deal imo. The frame is sweet, the cable routing has no cheap bits and the rest of the bike is specced out great. And my LBS assembled it perfectly.
I was looking at the norco or the giant fathom 2. I was leaning toward the norco, but the size large is sold out til the 2024 comes out. How have you liked yours? Think it’s worth the wait?
I love it. Whether it's worth the wait is up to you.@@Pdpawlak
Sometimes I wonder, how much extra manufacturing cost is really involved to make a 5° hub vs. a 10° hub. They need to work this out, because even a lot of more expensive bikes have terrible hubs. It's a huge pain to swap out a hub. Basically the most difficult part to replace on a bike.
Agreed! Or at least design a hub that can be easily upgraded with higher engagement later.
I spent a long time looking for an upgrade from my cheap walmart bike and ended up going with the habit ht 3. This video really helped decide it for me. This bike handles very well on all the rocky and steep sections that the Texas hill country has.
Only problem I’ve found is that my wrists are hurting after I ride. That probably will be solved by a fork upgrade, a bar with a bit more rise, and better technique lol. Otherwise, its been great!
Good to see you back out there! Looks like more brands need to take some ques from this and eliminate that dreaded quick release and make thru axles standard across the board!
I've been looking at a lot of hardtails the last week or so online (for my wife). Currently off work with a fractured 5th metatarsal so a lot of time on my hands. You are so right about the number of UA-cam vids that say they are reviewing bikes only for them to be obviously just reading off a spec sheet. Really appreciate what you do. Marin Team 1 or 2 or Trek Roscoe 9 in the running so far.
I have a marin team 1 and totally love it for what it is. Definitely more light trail xc but very capable. Decent components for the price and all i have added is a Dropper post. I use it for riding around the LA area mountains and trails similar to the one ridden in this review, perfect for these trails. Also great for riding around town or at the beach due to its XC roots. If you arent planning on going down hill as much and more of a trail rider then id recommend it!
@blacktrucksfly Thank you so much. My wife currently rides a carbon gravel bike with 650b 47mm tyres. But after hiring mountain bikes while on holiday in the Sierra nevada mountains Spain a couple of months ago she really enjoyed the extra comfort on the rough stuff.
@@Ecoroof1986 If she is coming from a gravel bike and looking for more comfort for that style of more rough gravel trail riding, i would go with the team marin. This cannondale is much more oriented for descending and downhill rides as it is very slack and has very wide slow rolling aggressive tires. It will feel extremely sluggish on anything not downhill. I used to have a Canyon Stoic which is very similar to the cannondale and it was great fun on mountain descents but incredibly hard work and sluggish on flats and climbs. Id rather take a full suspension then a downhill focused hard tail... just preference. Thats why i switched the canyon for the marin
I bought a Roscoe 9 a few months ago and while it's ridiculously comfortable, and a babysitter of a bike it would probably be overkill for mainly XC. It wouldn't be *my* first choice for that at least. Learning new skills, it's been GREAT, it's a very forgiving platform.
Glad you felt well enough for a ride review. And I'm so stoked this bike is good, was really hoping it would be
Great review! I was looking for a while and ended up getting this at a local shop for $1278 out the door. I went in looking for the HT 3 but worked out a deal.
Steve, good to see you out. Keep on keeping on. I refer your youtube channel to everyone looking for hardtail advice.
Thanks for getting this ride review out! After learning the other geo points of your other bikes this one is not first pick. But it is so interesting at what it does well. Great discussion on the two build options and upgrade list. I saw the entry level build for $999 on sale.
I say get the build you rode, change to Maxxis Dissectors, get a year out of the fork……. Oh shoot, that turquoise color in the cheaper one is sweet. Either one looks like a great bike to build upon. Absolutely this needed to be tested and not just the specs skimmed over. I bought my first mtb in 1983, later maybe in 1996 I remember seeing these bikes at Mikes bikes that were Cannondale mtb with a mono shock thing. I was having kids then so they were out of my price point but they seemed like cutting edge technology.
Been waiting on this one! Glad to see you back on the trails! Speaking of javelinas, I"m in south texas and was riding the other day and ran into a group of about 8 javelinas. Luckly they're usually spooked easily so they all just ran off. I'm just afraid that one day they'll run away right into me lol.
Really GREAT to see you on a bike ride!! 🤩🙌🏼 ENJOY
Great video Steve. I used to own a Cannondale F1000 in the 1990’s. It was super lightweight but man those big fat tubes and that weird Headshock made for a stiff ride. Their bikes seem to be much better now and it’s great that they are making a trail bike now versus just a XC racer.
Perfect timing, local shop has one that's caught my attention. Those Santa Cruz Reserve aluminum wheels could be a perfect upgrade for the hub situation!
Personally I always buy “frame only” and custom build my bikes from my nice parts and new parts that I choose for the build. With that said, obviously the frame is very important and I love your detailed reviews. I think many people disregard the fact that a hardtail is amazing and worth building up custom because you can build it for your personal needs and trails you often ride. Personally, I also consider myself a weight weenie to a point. I weigh 150 and I don’t need overly built re-enforced frames with gussets and other stuff. I don’t see the need for 35mm stem/bars when 31.8 works great and offers more comfort. Anyway, I’m rambling, sorry. Gotta go ride now!
Чем не угодили рули 35 миллиметров? Они выглядят намного приятнее , а весят столько же или на 20 Грам больше)
Wishing you all the best with your health, and good to see you back out there. I’ve been out since July with a broken leg and ankle but hopefully will get myself back on the bike before Christmas- best wishes, Nick in Australia
I Just see a new hardtail party video like the old times a new review im so happy to see you riding no matter if you are still dealing whit the sicknes you are riding and that change everything
I am happy every time you post a new video man. Your content has high value and gets me excited to watch it every time.
Thank you so much
Thanks for doing these fantastic reviews! Your videos are very educational and most people will probably start out in this price point
Thanks for your review, please take the time to recover and heal as needed. We’re here for the long term anyways.
Thank you so much for your review! This is one ive been waiting for. I purchased the habit ht and have been upgrading it. Love the bike! Glad to finally hear your opinion on the platform. Wishing you a speedy recovery and successful journey to health.
Hey Steve, I’m new to the Chanel, I’ve bought the Habit HT2 in kaki color! I like it so far, my rear derailleur seems to grab the chain when I stop pedaling, which is annoying but apart from that, the bike rides well. I’ve upgraded the wheels for some Hunt Race XC Wide, and tubeless Continental Race King and that’s a total speed machine now!
Edit : greetings from France !
I can confirm that the PDW Everyday Rack can fit this frame. Use a seatpost collar with rack mounts, turn the upper supports to the top of the rack from the bottom and it has clearance.
A great review as always Steve as I have always had a feeling Habit is an excellent entry level bike worth upgrading when I looked it up online for the first time, so this review kinda confirm it. Regardless, please take care of your health first and don't push yourself too hard~
Great to see you out riding! Get healthy and get back into the saddle regularly soon!
Great review Steve, so happy to see you out riding around having fun, the review was bonus, do your thing bro wohoo, lol.
Stoked to see you riding and doing reviews. Rest up and go ride the TransAm for us!!!
Glad to see you back on the bike.
Great seeing you back on a bike Steve!! Great detailed review on the bike. Most of us have our go to bike but it’s great hearing and learning about a entry hardtail that could be recommended for a kid, friend getting into MTB. Great job 👏
What i like is to comes with a dropper at that price point. Now my scapple looks exactly the same insertion point as the bike reviewing . It would be nice to be able to select a dropper size at purchace . Nice review . I still have my first entry from 2018 . Changed the cranks and cassette . Still original suntour airfork . I added a dropper early and converted to tubeless . I understand draggy affect and it can be difficult to figure out . I think you will see further discounts coming on bikes in the future
Wow! 1350 is a total steal for something that had nice geo and is uogradabke in the future. Its awesome to see you back in the trails Steve!
How does that compare to the Roscoe 6?
What a great review. I love how you explain the different aspects of each bike and where they may (or may not) affect the ride experience. 👍
I just got this for $950 and I'm pretty stoked to start riding it.
Great review, so glad to see prices coming down. Even better, great to see you on a bike ;)
This was/is my first bike. My first upgrade was the dropper, the second will be my drivetrain because it drives me nuts.. thanks for an awesome new review, glad to see you riding again!!
what about the drivetrain drives you nuts? It shifts so well for me.
@@hardtailparty it tends to chug and stall on the up shift/downshift under any load, and after 5 months of riding, I’d really like to have better/faster up/down capabilities - BUT that’s just because I’m getting used to it and figuring out how I ride and what I prefer
@@sloanestephenson5521 most of us ease up a bit on the torque when shifting. It'll make your chain and the rest of your drivetrain last a ton longer.
Good to see ya back on, Amigo 😊
I picked up this bike in August when REI had the ht2 on sale for $1,159.00. I swapped the Judy for a Marzocchi Z2 and put on a set of Hunt Trail Wides I had. The bike has been great. Mostly flat flow trails here in southwest Michigan. The HT3 would have been a better deal but wasn't available at the time of the sale. The headset and the crank spindle had no grease so check everything over if you purchase one.
Yeah, assembly is not their strong suit. Good call to doh or check and grease everything.
I too picked up a ht 2 on sale at REI. Thanks for the review Steve and the comments re checking for grease. I will do that soon. Haven’t ridden it much but definitely plan to do so. Thanks again.
So REI always has their bike sale in August? Why would the HT3 have been the better deal if it's a coil fork?
@@mariovelasquez3296What do you think of the bike? Do you know when REI usually has its bike sale?
@@Jose-sy1jeHonestly, I haven’t been able to take it off pavement since I bought it. Thankfully REI has a great return policy. NOT saying I’m just panning on retuning it, just safe keeping for now.
And I don’t know when they have their sales. Im keeping my eyes open for a bike for the wife.
Hope you're doing well? Would be nice if Cannondale came out with an HT1 build with a Marzocchi Fork and a 1x12 Deore drivetrain. Which is what I consider a solid base build. Some great hardtails have recently dropped---Transition TransAm and Orbea Laufey. Stay well, my friend.
This microshift is fantastic. I don't feel a need to upgrade it at all.
Sick looking bike! I'd agree with stepping down the model and customizing it how you want...
Nice to you back out - hope all is well- how does this compare to the Fuse ?
I bought the HT 3 on sale for $1,000 after tax as a beginner all-rounder, just getting into MTB. I haven't put as much time into riding yet as I would like but it's been a solid bike where it feels like I am the limiting factor in its performance. So far, I've been happy with the coil fork, dropper, and everything else as a beginning for basic trail rides and just starting out. For $1,000, I couldn't find anything else that fit the bill on specs and quality and I am quite happy with my purchase.
That's a steal for $1000
I thought so too. Jumped right on it. @@hardtailparty
Nice review and even nicer that you are back in the saddle 🎉 thanks to you that i found my new bike. To be exact, i went from an Orbea Laufey and switched the from to a Ragley Big Wig 2023. LOVE IT ❤
Did i miss your judgement about the ride feel interms of compliance or harshness? 🤔
Big upgrade. Enjoy your big wig.
@@hardtailparty yes, sir! Indeed, I really do. Just came back from building a trail in a nearby forest and of course, I went there on my Big Wig 😍 #nodignoride
thx for the review, really was looking forward to it!
Great review Steve. I hope you didn't suffer too much as a result. Thanks for what you do - its much appreciated.
I'm still recovering 10 days later, but it made me so happy to be out on a bike.
I’ve never been a big fan of Cannondale and no 27.5 option 🤷🏻♂️ good looking bike but I like the look of the Rocky Mointian growler/Soul more. Also looking at the Norco fluid HT2 . Awesome review. Subbed
Been looking forward to this review
Nice one Steve! Seems like a cool bike, I like how versatile it is.
Glad to see you are doing better! The Cannondale Habit is a good looking bike at a solid price but I feel like the Canyon Stoic 3 beats it in almost every way. I’ll admit I’m totally bias as I just bought one recently but the Stoic 3 comes with similar geo, RockShox 35 fork, Sram Guide T brakes, Schwalbe Hans Dampf & Magic Mary tires, 170mm dropper post, Sram SX 12 speed. The base price for the Stoic 3 is a little more at $1500 but i feel like you can always find it on sale. I got mine 2 months ago for $1100 with free shipping. Both quality hardtails and would be a good head to head comparison
I do my head to head comparisons between models over on Patreon. I know they may look fairly similar, but they ride completely different. It's important to not base your purchase decision solely on component spec.
How did you find it for 1.1k with free shipping? I was looking at the Stoic 2 before, but when I wanted to check out they charged me 350 extra for shipping. So I didn't buy it then.
Glad to see you’re feeling up for a ride, even if it takes a while to recover. I hope your treatments are going well and you see improvement. Was the Habit HT very stiff though? I assumed it would be since a lot of affordable bikes are, but I don’t think you mentioned it in the video
Good to know there is a good entry level bike out there!
Great review Steve as always! I’m wondering if you would recommend running this bike with a 120mm 34SC and a faster XC setup? Some great deals on these atm. Hope to see you riding again soon
My first mountain bike was a Cannondale hard tail & was only $1000 brand new......... in 1986. I bent the rigid fork in 3 days & cracked the frame in 3 months....... my how far we have come.
Really want to see the GT Zaskar on your channel. I have emailed them for this xD
HI - another great video thanks. One question - I am planning to visit California for a few weeks. Which area would you recommend for cross country MTB trails this time of the year?
Great video! Thank you! Have you seen the new HT1? $1550 retail and maybe it meets your short comings on the HT2?
Would love your opinion.
I’m a bit concerned with the delayed hub engagement. Can you discuss this more and what the upgrade path would be?
There are frameset available in our country. Only worth $300 converted
I just got into the hard tail life building up a ns eccentric
FYI Mike's Bikes has these on sale for black friday:
Habit HT 2 $1199
Habit HT 3 $989
Τhanks for the great review! I am thinking about HT1. What is your height if I may ask?
Getting to buy my first mtb (since I was a kid) to start to bike in the forest. Probably both flat and hilly, not totally sure yet. Leaning toward a trail rather than a XC, downhill is for sure nothing for me. I like the thought of flexibility in a trail. Is Habit HT1 or HT2 a good start? Can get a new HT1 for $850 or a HT3 for $665. Sounds like good value for the money. Don’t think I will upgrade much on the bike, just want to assemble and go.
1. Is it a good choice for a beginner who wants to try out?
2. Is the HT1 worth the extra $185? (Probably won’t start to change parts for a long while, if ever).
Nice review Steve! It bothers me when people see nothing wrong with having dogs off leash on trail, the last thing i want is to crash into a poor dog. Owners need to take better responsibility and respect the trail rules. Not to mention, you wont notice your pup taking a poop on the trail while your running ahead...
"Have a wonderful hike". "Yeah, you too".😂 me, all the time.
I wonder if I can spec that frame into some sort of an XC commuter with a 120mm fork? The only gripe I have on that frame is the max chainring size if only 36t.
For what it’s worth I believe this bike is on sale at REI for just over $1,000.
Question...just bought the new HT2. I'm 6 ft tall 180. I bought the large. I felt the same thing a little forwards on the down. Not the extension I would like. Do you think a extended riser post on the handle bars could solve this. I also agree it pigs a little going uphill. I think extended riser could solve both issues ?
Hi, may I know what is the max chainring for this bike? I’m planning to change mine to 34T chainring and 11-42 cogs? Any thoughts? Thanks!
Great review! One question - did you feel the bike was fairly compliant, or did it beat you up on those chunky sections?
It's not as stiff as a canyon stoic, but not as smooth as a good steel bike.
hi thanks for the video - i have a question about sizing..which size frame do you have and what is your height? I'm 6ft and inbetween a L and an XL and not sure which size to go for!
Would this be a better bike to buy than cannondale's trail se 2? I have both of these on sale in my local bike shop. Would be using it for trails as well as commutes to work. Thanks
Excelent! If the spec was burlier, would you be comfortable on blacks and doble black? And how does it compare to the Marin SQ2?
I do my bike comparisons over on Patreon. I'd be happy to help you over there. Patreon.com/hardtailparty
Great video.
What front suspension would you upgrade to for the Ht3?
Hi, I'm interested in this bike. I've currently got a 2016 whyte 901 which I love but it's also the only mtb I've ever owned. I'm fairly new and not a super serious rider, would this bike be worth the upgrade or am I just better with what I have
It says it has 130mm of fork travel. Could you just put a fork with more travel on it or is that not possible?
Hello, could someone explain what he meant by proper trail etiquette? 😅 was it the dogs not on leash? Or that she didn’t move out the way for him?
I thought peds had right of way I don’t know tho
Thanks!
