I would have bought the Hello Dave but living in Wisconsin we pedal up hill 90% of our rides. I choose the R spec Santa Cruz Chameleon 8 for 20% off and added i9 hydra hubs to the stock raceface wheels. All in about 3k for an amazing hardtail with great spec. Without the 20% sale the chameleon is a bit steep in price.
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy Its still tempting to order one just to try. Strip it and sell the frame. So tempting. You could not buy all the parts for the price of that bike.

Had the 2021 Avalanche Comp for awhile (same frame) bike was a beast, but had to up grade everything to make it that way. Put over a $1000 in parts. But Stock it’s beginner level at best especially the Sport model. But who cares! Enjoy your bike homie!💯
How about the Bizango Pro Carbon? $2,128.50 USD down to 1,547.27 USD!? Qrcycles has it on special. I went with the VRS due to the specs and postage was a killer
Thanks man! Maybe “trail” hardtail would be more appropriate, but the high seat tube, short reach and *relatively* steep headtube at 66.5 degrees is a lot more XC leaning than the other bikes in this video, in my opinion at least
Nice, those are great options!! I sadly don’t partner with Planet X,the distributor for On-One. But if you go with the Marin I’d appreciate you purchasing it through the link there!
You would think huh? It’s definitely a more damped feel than the previous model, but still relatively stiff. Definitely stiffer than my RSD Middlechild which has a shockingly compliant ride given the fat tubing haha
Very nice overwiev of what I am looking for. If you are coming from an full damped carbon XC bike( Scott RC 900), and just looking for some fun riding in woods with alot of over rock gardens, big roots, fallen trees and not going to spend to time in the skate park or very big jumps, wich of these do you recomend? And the riding will not only be downhill. Just tired of my XC bike is to heavy in the front, and not as playful. Shuld be easy to get the front wheel up a little bit. Also size? 187cm...
Of those bikes I’d say it sounds like the Stoic or Rocky Mountain would be best, depending on your price point. I personally ride an RSD Middlechild and absolutely love it, super playful and adjustable (can be set up 27.5, 29, or MX). It’s a bit pricier than the bikes on this list, but if you can stretch your budget up to $2,300 or so I’d say it’s definitely worth it 🤙
A hard tail is a great option if your local terrain is not too rough. Full suspension is still worth the money with lockouts. Even cross country suspension specs is better overall than hardtail. For most folks and entry level riders they area great and still fairly capable. Riding a fully rigid mtb will make you better rider provided the terrain isn't crazy rough.
Interesting opinion! I’d say it’s the entry level rider who needs full suspension on technical terrain. A skilled rider can haul ass and (IMHO) have more fun while doing it on a hardtail. Check out this video to see me racing downhill on my hardtail and beating riders on full blown DH and enduro rigs: ua-cam.com/video/yJJLpIJMYYo/v-deo.html
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy not everyone may be as skilled as you. While I do agree with you, personally I have taking more interest in comfort over speed. I know back in the day rigid single speed would beat some riders with gears and suspension. At the end of the day it come down to having fun and choosing your weapon on choice :)
To be honest I just stick with one Dive for the sake of brevity. Hopefully it gives you a ball park range of the bike’s sizing and you can check their website for details on your specific size 🤙
Biggest difference are the geometry and fork travel. XC bikes are designed to be the fastest possible climbers, whereas aggressive/hardcore hardtails have a larger priority on descending/jumping
Not necessarily, their handling is optimized for steep, high speed riding. An XC bike would be better for in the city as it has a lot more agile geometry and more efficient pedaling
Tons of good options out there, but I tried to pick a range that represented a wide variety of budgets and riders. I featured the Ragley Mmmbop in this video, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/OHY20bEKbs4/v-deo.html
Hi there, i currently have a trek slash 8 2016 which is an enduro 160mm travel bike (feel a bit overbiked) and i wanted something that would be better for local flow trails jumps and pump track. something that would also make xc trails more intresting. and be better at climbing im currently stuck between choosing the Ragley Marley 1.0 , canyon stoic 4 and the Nuke proof scout 275 comp as well as marin san quentin 3 i dont really need stable and fast id rather have something thats more playful and good at cornering. what do you think would be best as a 2nd bike? all them would be 27.5 for my frame size
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy thanks so much for your response! , after looking at the geo of the vitus sentier 27 VRS doesn't that look more playful? main thing is, what bike would be better at doing steeper jumps?
The vitus has a pretty high seat tube, which can make it a bit trickier. But the steeper HTA and shorter reach will also make it a bit better feeling on the jumps. It’s a bit of a trade off for sure
Interesting, I’m surprised to hear that! It’s actually got the same BB drop as the San Quentin, which is a full 27.5 bike. Thanks for sharing your experience with it!
Hi, i am thinking about buying the new Orbea Laufey , id love to hear your oppinion on it if u had the chance to check the bike out. Or anyone else here who might have. Thx in advance!
I'm brand new to the MTB world and ready to roll. I'm on budget under $1k and think I've narrowed down to Marin SQ1 and Polygon Xtrada 7. I'm 6' 3" and about 240lbs. Can you PLEASE help me make the right choice? If neither of those two, which bike do i pick?
Those are two great bikes, and I actually compared both in this video! Hopefully that will help you differentiate which is best for you! ua-cam.com/video/7tYajfbXCC0/v-deo.html
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy I've watched the video. Just figured I'd see what your opinion would be given my size. I feel like the XT7 just has so much more going for it besides HTA. And only 27.5 on SQ1. I'm ready to pull trigger on XT7 @ $900 bikesonline plus $25 discount
@@keithe8351 they're both great bikes, depending on what your goal is. The Xtrada7 will be best for XC rides, where maintaining speed through tight terrain and up hills is important, where as the SQ1 caters more towards downhill speed and jumping, but won't be as nimble at slower speeds. If you go with the Xtrada7 from BikesOnline it would be a huge help to our channel if you purchase it using our affiliate link. You'll pay the same amount, but I'll earn a small commission: bikesonline-usa.sjv.io/5gaD6D
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy I'll definitely use your link. The main thing I like about X7 over SQ1 is the thru axle instead of QR. I'd mainly be riding wooded trails but will find some trails with small jumps from time to time. I can still hit some small jumps with X7 right? And the X7 seems more "upgradable" no? Too foreign?
Hey,great helpful review thank you,can i ask if you had the on one wrekker which is kinda like the on one hello dave exept it's titanium maybe but what is a better lower weight wheelset to change to from the wtb st i30's,also it's saying that wheelset is 11 speed would getting a 12 speed wheeleset make it any faster maybe 😮
Ya, lower weight wheels are definitely a good investment, as you’ll notice the decrease in rolling weight before anything else. Also, to switch from 11 to 12 speed you will need to get a new 12 Speed compatible hub or freehub body
I was wondering why you haven't reviewed any of the RSD middlechild builds. I've been considering a middlechild, but I'm not sure which build would be the best for the price.
I’ve actually don’t a ton of videos on my Middlechild, check them out here: ua-cam.com/play/PLuHTEhoxOiC0OIstnarZZzmYVY2L9UCiz.html In terms of what build to get it all comes down to your budget. I built mine up from the frame with mostly used parts; probably put about $2,000 into the build (including the frame)
Great bike at a killer value! But it leans a bit towards the XC side of the spectrum, whereas the bikes in this video are designed for more aggressive, enduro style riding

It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
The Scout is a super rad bike, and I’ve featured some of the build tiers on this channel. But the spec on the “Race” model isn’t great; no dropper post, Recon RL fork, etc.
Best HT under $5K.... LOL, you can buy two HTs easy for 5 large. I ride a Stache, but have to admit, so many great options in the $2k range today. New geo is enticing 😊
Oh I have much more than that saved; emphasis on saved, not to be haphazardly thrown at a bike. If I spent like that then I probably would be living paycheck to paycheck lol, too many good bikes out there!
I hate the pricing of the bikes, as Im Mexican living in Mexico, they actually are most expensive here than the currency conversion, and we wouldnt be able to buy in the US without proper import fees, taxes, and shipping. And the worst part is income differences, average salary per year, a manager alike, could be around 10 000 dollars here (I tend to earn more than that), most of the people earn so much less than that, and I think in USA average could be 40 to 50 thousands, anyways, is so uneven, buying a bike what represents to people here to people in the US, a whole diferent picture
Literally the inky person I've ever seen complain about the seat tube on the Stoic. Sam Pilgrim seems to ride this bike and other bikes with much taller seat tubes with no problems
You must not watch many hardtail reviews than lol, it’s a pretty common complaint. Pilgrim’s a lot better than me lol, I need all the help from good geometry I can get!
Sub and like. Thanks. I have a video idea. Do a video of the best hard tails from the past 7 years or something. The is year marin. Then your last years top pick and so on.... :) thanks
Dropper Post on a Hardtail? You have got to be kidding me. Those guys have got everybody suckered into buying dropper posts!! What a Gimmick and they are taking it to the bank!! Tons of good options out there, but I tried to pick a range that represented a wide variety of budgets and riders. I featured the Ragley Mmmbop in this video, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/OHY20bEKbs4/v-deo.html
Nice work homie!!💪🏻
Thanks man 🤙
I like my 2022 - 23 GT Avalanche Sport and its still under 1000 dollars
Had the 2021 Avalanche Comp for awhile (same frame) bike was a beast, but had to up grade everything to make it that way. Put over a $1000 in parts. But Stock it’s beginner level at best especially the Sport model. But who cares! Enjoy your bike homie!💯
Let’s you know how much these main box name bikes price gouge us in parts spec. Seeing how much the Dave bike costs.
I mean that thing is an insane deal; but ya you’re definitely paying for the name when you by from the big guys
How about the Bizango Pro Carbon?
$2,128.50 USD down to 1,547.27 USD!?
Qrcycles has it on special.
I went with the VRS due to the specs and postage was a killer
Seems like a good deal of you’re looking for more of XC bike!
8:33 wait, the vitus sentier is a... xc bike? Maybe its just me but i thought it was an enduro hardtail? Cool video though for sure! ❤
Thanks man! Maybe “trail” hardtail would be more appropriate, but the high seat tube, short reach and *relatively* steep headtube at 66.5 degrees is a lot more XC leaning than the other bikes in this video, in my opinion at least
I'm not seeing the hello Dave link for the bike. Am I missing it? Thanks for the reviews. Want to purchase hello for my son. And Marin for me.
Nice, those are great options!! I sadly don’t partner with Planet X,the distributor for On-One. But if you go with the Marin I’d appreciate you purchasing it through the link there!
Don’t knock those tyres on the hello Dave, yeah they are heavy but I run them on my Planet X bike and they are grippy as hell👍
Good to know, thanks!
Great video! How is the marin rear end ride compliance? Seat stays look thin, perhaps its vertically compliant? Curious on you thoughts
It’s a bit pricier than the bikes on this list, but if you can stretch your budget up to $2,300 or so I’d say it’s definitely worth it 🤙
I have a on one hello Dave they amazing bikes for the money upgrades due soon
Absolutely, glad we have so many options!
Good work on the video. Could you mention the reach numbers on the medium size too? I think that would benefit more people on this channel.
To be honest I just stick with one Dive for the sake of brevity. Hopefully it gives you a ball park range of the bike’s sizing and you can check their website for details on your specific size 🤙
What’s the difference between hardcore trail bike and xc trail bike (hardtail)
Biggest difference are the geometry and fork travel. XC bikes are designed to be the fastest possible climbers, whereas aggressive/hardcore hardtails have a larger priority on descending/jumping
The Marin San quentin 1 2024 is £860 just now good starter bike
i'm 'new' to all these Hardtails.....would they also,..be Good to ride..on busy ..congested Big City's?
Not necessarily, their handling is optimized for steep, high speed riding. An XC bike would be better for in the city as it has a lot more agile geometry and more efficient pedaling
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy ..so what 'style' of Bike..would you guy's recommend...for more City riding..& the occasional 'Gravel' paths??
On one I remember when I had Planet X bikes years ago the Planet X decal is alot cooler than On one anyway
Orbea Laufey
you also missed all the Ragely bikes on sale at chain reaction for all under 1$400usd
Tons of good options out there, but I tried to pick a range that represented a wide variety of budgets and riders. I featured the Ragley Mmmbop in this video, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/OHY20bEKbs4/v-deo.html
Hi there, i currently have a trek slash 8 2016 which is an enduro 160mm travel bike (feel a bit overbiked) and i wanted something that would be better for local flow trails jumps and pump track. something that would also make xc trails more intresting. and be better at climbing
im currently stuck between choosing the Ragley Marley 1.0 , canyon stoic 4 and the Nuke proof scout 275 comp as well as marin san quentin 3
i dont really need stable and fast id rather have something thats more playful and good at cornering. what do you think would be best as a 2nd bike?
all them would be 27.5 for my frame size
If you’re looking for playfulness Id steer you towards the Marley, the geo on that things should make it super fun and agile!
That hello Dave is 1299 British pounds, that's $1600 roughly, so not the cheapest but still a great deal
Math error 🤦♂️ Thanks for the catch!
I'd tried a mullet growler. Don't worth the risk of doin that. The BB Height is too low with 29er. Mixed wheels just make it unastable
Interesting, I’m surprised to hear that! It’s actually got the same BB drop as the San Quentin, which is a full 27.5 bike. Thanks for sharing your experience with it!
Yup, the growler actually feels too low in stock configuration lol
Hi, i am thinking about buying the new Orbea Laufey , id love to hear your oppinion on it if u had the chance to check the bike out. Or anyone else here who might have. Thx in advance!
2023 Trek Roscoe 8❤
I wish Marin made a comparable 29er to the San Quintin.
I set mine up as a mullet and loved it! Check out the video here: ua-cam.com/video/XQJdif6jN7Q/v-deo.html
What about the salsa timberjack?
Great bike, but sadly not under $2,000 USD. I featured it in this buyers guide though! ua-cam.com/video/7iaF3D5JvGA/v-deo.html
I got my timberjack slx for $1700 that’s why I asked
That’s a steal, nice find! List price is $2,100
The canyon though
I gotta start a gofund for you to get the hello dave and to cure your scratchy throat voice😂
Lol thanks man 😂
How does the Giant Fathom 1 compare to these?
Great bike at a killer value! But it leans a bit towards the XC side of the spectrum, whereas the bikes in this video are designed for more aggressive, enduro style riding
Nukeproof Scout is going for 900! How"s that for cheap.
Insane deal!!
It's a biased opinion but I'd pick my Ragley Mmmbop over the San Quentin
Tons of good options out there, but I tried to pick a range that represented a wide variety of budgets and riders. I featured the Ragley Mmmbop in this video, check it out! ua-cam.com/video/OHY20bEKbs4/v-deo.html
Clarks are decent. The clouts are better than my tektro drako brake set.
Good to know!
No Norco torrent line up??
Love the Torrent, but not under $2k. The Fluid HT isn’t the best value compared to the others on this list
Cannondale Habit 1
Hadn’t been released yet haha, but yes, if I remade this video today it’d likely be in there 👌
@@ridingwithjoshandwendy I LOVE IT!!! Habit, so amazing
Not sure, sorry!
isnt the nukeproof scout superior against these bikes?
The Scout is a super rad bike, and I’ve featured some of the build tiers on this channel. But the spec on the “Race” model isn’t great; no dropper post, Recon RL fork, etc.
Calling 439mm chainstays long on a 29er bike is a bit exaggerated isnt it id say thats nice and short for a 29 back end
Maybe on a full suspension bike, but 29” hardtails tend to be around 420-435. The vitus w/ 439 mm chainstays is the second longest on this list
where are you seeing the prices? one one hello dave is between $2300 and $2400 they're nowhere close to $1350
Sale is sadly over 😕
Roscoe 8 👌👌👌👌
Instead get Bianchi nitron 9.4 carbon and change shifter to Shimano xt, brakes to Shimano xt for 2k eur.
That’s great for XC, but very different than the bikes on this list, check out my XC buyers guide here! ua-cam.com/video/sHy8xoi94nY/v-deo.html
Best HT under $5K.... LOL, you can buy two HTs easy for 5 large. I ride a Stache, but have to admit, so many great options in the $2k range today. New geo is enticing 😊
For those looking at the Virus Ive heard those WTB wheels are pretty weak and prone to faliure. Something to keep in mind.
Interesting, never had an issue with mine!
I like my on one 45650b
Yeeeeahh you sadly cannot get a hello dave for that price now lol, they went up to like 2,100 to 2,300.
What do you mean you don't have 1300 laying around? Paycheck to Paycheck?
What's going on with people?
Ah bummer, sorry to hear that man!!
In uk we are limited with bikes and colors , can’t anyone in USA adopt me ?
Literally the inky person I've ever seen complain about the seat tube on the Stoic. Sam Pilgrim seems to ride this bike and other bikes with much taller seat tubes with no problems
You must not watch many hardtail reviews than lol, it’s a pretty common complaint. Pilgrim’s a lot better than me lol, I need all the help from good geometry I can get!
Sub and like. Thanks. I have a video idea. Do a video of the best hard tails from the past 7 years or something. The is year marin. Then your last years top pick and so on.... :) thanks
That’d be dope! Thanks for the sub and the great idea!
Hey my little jibs and tricks aren’t silly 😜😜
Haha no they’re not, and if anyone tells you otherwise they’re liars! Jibs are life 🤘😂
The Vitus with the cable hanging under the BB - what's that all about? *facepalm*
That's in British pounds not Usd
Trek roscoe 7 destroys these
Maybe on XC trails lol
For 2k you get carbon frame bike, not these heavy al bikes.
Why do you want a carbon bike?
Peasant priced bikes.
That’s how I like em!
Schwabley 😂😂😂
lol I’ve since learned 😂
Dropper Post on a Hardtail? You have got to be kidding me. Those guys have got everybody suckered into buying dropper posts!! What a Gimmick and they are taking it to the bank!! Now days most people wouldn't ride a hardtail on any trail that would be that difficult. The whole industry is brainwashed to think they need a dropper post on every mountain bike that is sold.
You recommend the bike named after meth use??? Horrible marketing plan 😂
And which bike is that?
