    I figure if you can get a giant crowd to "sing along" to an instrumental, you've pretty much won the music business.

    Geddy (bass) and Alex (guitar) met in middle school. Neil (drums) got hired right before they kicked off their first US tour, in replacement of their original drummer who had health issues. Check out Beyond The Lighted Stage, fantastic documentary about their career. And definitely dive into their musical catalog. Three of the most talented musicians ever, in one band.

      @@TheThamesmen Neil Peart grew up in the small town of Port Dalhousie, which is now part of the small city of St. Catherine’s. It’s about an hour’s drive from where Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson grew up. Neil was an autodidact who left high school to make his way as a musician, originally moving to London (your London, that is, as opposed to the slightly larger but still small city of London, Ontario, located about 1.5 hours from St Catherine’s,,, but I digress). He didn’t have any luck and moved back home after a year or so, going to work as manager of the parts department in his father’s tractor dealership. He had some moderate local success with a band called JR Flood before he was sought out by Rush’s manager for an audition. The original drummer had diabetes and a strong preference for “Bad company” style rock, so he couldn’t go on the road with Alex and Geddy.
      Peart was also the author of seven non-fiction books as well as the principle lyricist for Rush.
      PS - The reason why Toronto’s airport code is YYZ is that - when airport codes where first being established (through international convention), some Canadian bureaucrats apparently thought it would suck if each of the country’s cities didn’t get its preferred choice of three-letter code. The solution was to use Y for all Canadian airports, which is why Montréal is YUL, Calgary is YYC, Vancouver is YVR, Ottawa is YOW, and little London, Ontario’s airport is YXU).

  • @ritchmoore1442
    @ritchmoore1442 3 роки тому +22

    YYZ is the IATA airport identification code of Toronto Pearson International Airport, near Rush's hometown. The band was introduced to the rhythm as Alex Lifeson flew them into the airport. A VHF omnidirectional range system at the airport broadcasts the YYZ identifier code in Morse code. Peart said in interviews later that the rhythm stuck with them. Peart and Geddy Lee have both said "It's always a happy day when YYZ appears on our luggage tags."
    Only Rush can make Morse Code sound so good.

    Rush returned to touring after a few years unexpected hiatus (Neil's wife died of cancer and their adult daughter was killed in a car accident the same year). Neil took off for parts unknown and it was later discovered he rode his motorcycle from Canada to South America and back; they only knew he was still alive from periodic postcards he would send. Just when Alex and Geddy were considering dissolving their company and the band, Neil re-surfaced and asked if they still wanted to make music (Neil is the lyricist). They kicked off a world tour (Neil hated touring) and their agent found out they were extremely popular in Brazil. He book a couple of concerts in Brazil, which sold out quickly and they decided to extend the tour due to the tremendous reaction of their fans and media attention. The crowds at the stadium's topped 100,000 and some fans even quit their jobs because they couldn't get time off.

    Most Airports in Canada start with the letter Y in the 1930’s it indicated that the airport had a weather station Y being for yes …. W being for Without . In the 40’s when names were formalized they kept the Y’s …….. I believe some airports in the U.S. have/ had an X at the end that means the same thing

    They didn’t just happen. They spent enormous amounts of time practicing and working on their craft. They were also road warriors and spent years on the road figuring out how to make it work. All Canadian international airport codes start with Y. This song is called YYZ because when they were on approach one day in a small plane they could hear the automated Morse Code signal for YYZ ( - . - - - . - - - - . . ) and Neil thought it would make a good tune.

    My understanding is that the Rio crowd was getting their first chance to see Rush live, so of course they were going nuts.

  • @danjmcs
    @danjmcs 3 роки тому

    The crowds in Rio and South America in general are crazy... Rush in Rio, Iron Maiden (Rock in Rio), Nightwish in Buenos Aires... the energy at those shows are all fantastic... crowds singing the rhythm to an instrumental section, like in YYZ and also Iron Maiden "Fear of the Dark", so great. Those funs give up a lot to travel to those shows so I think they are extra amped with the chance to see these bands live. For the most part, we're pretty spoiled in the USA with the opportunity to see shows if we just want to travel a few hours from most areas of the country, they definitely don't take it for granted like i think a lot of us do. Maybe not so much the last two years with ALL of us losing access to live music.

    Every now and then I'll revisit your Rush reactions just to get a kick out of the faces Alex makes when he likes something 😆 Yeah I know, I'm a strange one 😂😂. Anyway I noticed I didn't make a comment on this video and I thought of something you may not know about the song YYZ. In 1982 the song was nominated for a Grammy and lost to The Police "Behind My Camel" for best instrumental. If you ever wondered are the Grammy's fixed, this is definitely a great example of bias. Sting was embarrassed by the song and the fact that it was on the record.

    This band is from my hometown, well at least Geddy and Alex. They are a couple years older than me and were playing the school dance circuit before they started to get air play (Working Man). They also had rehearsal space in Willowdale that on occasion one could sneak into. The three of them are/were fantastic musicians (RIP Neil).
