0:44 you forgot about the best part of the game gear: there was an accessory that allowed you to watch over the air TV. So you could bring a portable TV to school, which was about as mind blowing as you can imagine in 1990.
I'm tempted to buy this by the industrial design alone. GKD/ZPG always put extra effort to add flair compared to blandness of Ambernic or Powkiddy and I respect that.
I have to applaud GKD for doing something different. You can tell that it is heavily inspired by the Game Gear, but at the same time they have a lot of their own design touches. If they skipped the logo on the front and sourced a brighter screen for the device I could definitely see myself getting one. Especially since I was a "Game Gear"-kid back in the 90's and have a lot of nostalgia for the voluptuous 90's design language. :)
I think companies should be diversifying their designs more. I love Gameboy as much as the next person, but there seems to be a million variations of imitations out there. I'd like to see the Mega Drive inspired ones, the dual shock design ones, or even a quirky Arcade themed ones with the trackballs, beat em' up joysticks, or mini steering wheels and flappy rear peddles for shoulder buttons.
i like that you pointed out the contra test isnt the end all, floating dpads are godlike for fighting games...the japanese sega saturn being the best pad ever. even on my vita i bought an adhesive dpad to put over the stock and glued it in place for that reason
I was wondering when you’d release a review for this one. It’s a must buy for me having owned a Game Gear as a kid. The nostalgia hit is too hard to ignore. Glad to see your review has given me enough confidence to place my order :)
I love the red colorway! Reminds me of the Coca-Cola and Magic Knight Rayearth editions of the Game Gear. I got a RG35XX H, but I'm really holding out for an RP ARC-D/S sequel that can reliably play Saturn games.
I had a game gear when i was a kid, it was really great. The games totally hold up, yet sometimes I feel like they get slept on by the retro community since most people had game boys
They get slept on because using a game gear sucked. Source: I had one, and it was bulky as hell and required so many batteries for so little playtime that I can see why people didn't bother.
@@umamifanI think the game gear rocked! Source: I also had one. Bulky? Was comfortable as hell to hold. Batteries were a problem but the games were so much fun and seeing everything in colour was just mind blowing!
I never used batteries in my Game Gear because of how fast it ate them. I remained tethered to the ac adapter and then played for hours on end. I even had the t.v. tuner... which never got a signal good enough to actually watch anything.
I like it. I have a Steam Deck (albeit a secondhand cheap one), and I am cautious to sit it down carefully and not leave it places it will be dropped or knocked about. But this GKD device is the kind of gadget you don't mind tossing across the room onto the bed or couch when you need to answer the door or go the bathroom. It's refreshing to not feel uptight about the care needed to protect a thing.
True, but it's an apples to oranges comparison since Sega left the hardware game over 20 years ago. I do find myself saying "eff Sony" and "eff Microsoft" with comparable frequency. 😅
Well I hope they can fix the brightness tbh, I live in the Caribbeans so it's often very bright here... Overhall I think the device looks damn great and engaging with its 90's vibe, it's like a time machine! I'll look forward for getting one but at this price point as you said there are better options so I'll wait a bit! Great vid as always ^^
Just got one and i really really like the design. Waiting a bit for custom firmware but the default one having emulationstation is a plus. Already had an SD card good to go.
I do find the design very charming. I am glad GKD is breaking away from the pack a bit by taking inspiration from this instead of the more obvious suspects.
I had the game gear when I was young and loved it. Is my favorite accessory was the master System adapter. We had found a very nice master system with a lot of games a couple years prior at a garage sale. So with that adapter , I was able to play my Master system games on the go.
Love the somewhat Mega Drive/Saturn style D-Pad this has, I like to use two types of D-Pads, the soft, rollable Mega Drive style, and the microswitch precise style, no one has cracked mixing the two types yet, unless you count the Neo Geo CD gamepads D-Stick, which might be the perfect 8-Way directional control type, only handheld with that is the awsome Neo Geo Pocket & NGPC. And someone finnaly made larger AB buttons, which I love, makes so much more sense intuitively to use.
My favorite Game Gear was the GBA. I really liked the old emulation on GBA days as it was the first time I got portable emulators. I explored the Master System and Game Gear libraires for the first time back then as that was the other near perfect emulator (the other being NES) on the GBA back then. I miss the old pocketheaven forums from back then.
I didn't have the money to get a Game Gear when it came out, but when I went to Japan in the late 2000s, I saw a Magic Knight Rayearth Game Gear in a shop and had to get it. I still have it, complete in box with the game.
When I was a kid, I loved the game boy, and I could only ever get my hands on the gb pocket, finally, on release, but the game gear was also discontinued already, so one of my friends gave me an old game gear for my birthday. It had some issues, though. It would power off randomly after a few minutes lol. To me, at the time, the screen didn’t look too washed out or anything, it was pretty amazing! I wished I could fix the one I had everytime I looked at it. I remember it was gifted to me with sonic 3 already inside the cartridge slot. I have a huge game gear roms collection, like 400 games. My favorite one is called Devilish. 😋
Really like the Game Gear look as I have fond memories of playing that system. Though I mostly played system near a wall socket because the battery life was atrocious. Unfortunately I got rid of my Game Gear as it died probably because of bad capacitors which at the time I didn't know how to fix.
Fantastic Review!!! I dont think i will replace my h, yet sadly, im in love with that thing at the moment, and the customization with Mu os is the icing on the cake.🎉
On Emulators, I have learned my lesion over the years... Find a list of the TOP 25 games for the system, then 10-15 of games you like if not on the favorites list, then a few games that you MIGHT like to play, this normally does not go over 50 games for each system and makes it manageable and quicker to find a game you want to play...
Yes, thanks for this review Russ. I was hoping you'd get this one and review it because there's not much (detailed) reviews on this yet. I ordered mine last week (in red too) and I can't wait till it gets here. FINALLY we get a decent handheld in a formfactor that fits my style, SEGA. I am SICK and TIRED of all the damn Nintendo formfactors, like ffs ENOUGH with the Nintendo designs! lol. Anyways, I'm happy to see that this WILL get the love it needs and we get CFW for it, because I'm gonna LOVE this thing.

The Anbernic ARC-D is pretty good for Genesis. Unfortunately, when I got it I started getting the itch to add Sega CD, 32x, and… Saturn. Saturn does not work comfortably on it which is real shame because the device is MADE for it. If it were just a little more powerful it would be the ultimate Sega device.
What theme is that on ES? Kinda digging it but I can't find it on ES android or on some of the other handhelds I have using things like Knulli, Garlic, etc. that are ES derivatives.
Good review! It's like the Game Gear's younger brother! I did have a Game Gear as a kid, but, man, that think felt bulky and sucked down six AA batteries effortlessly. You pretty much needed the AC adapter for it! I'm good on handhelds, but this looks like a decent inexpensive choice if you really like the Game Gear design. I definitely would have preferred playing on this as a kid instead of the original Game Gear! 😅
This is quite interesting. If I were a collector, I'd definitely pick one up. But as someone with limits, I'd consider it for purchase more if the difference wasn't skin-deep. I would've preferred if it had six buttons like the Arc with a larger four inches display. This is not really a mini device, so why not go all out.
The size difference between this and The Game Gear is hilarious considering the screen size is the same, the screen size for the original Game Gear was comically small in proportion to the rest of the device
My main issue is the 3.5mm jack. It'd always so annoying when it's at the top. It always means your cable will now be dangling over the screen as you play, unless you route it around the back of the handheld, in which case the headphones need a long ass lead. I wish the jack was at the bottom like most. It would be so much more ergonomic
8:14 if you hold the final cardinal input of your desired move as you hit the corresponding attack button, it significantly improves your chances of success (instead of lifting thumb and letting it snap itself back to neutral) 👹👹👹👹
21:20 I don't know how my old self was able to play turok 2 (I had that beautiful black cartridge) on the original n64 controller moving with the C-sticks. When I tried emulating my brain bugged and I really don't understand how I finished that game
I wonder if taking a Mr Clean Magic Eraser to the Bubble logo would clean up space for the digital bezel. I like the idea and it's nice considering how many vertical Gameboy inspired clones exist. I am a bit concerned about button layout for Sega games. The ARC will always have a place because the six face buttons but for the Bubble, the face buttons are mixing and matching between Game Gear and Nintendo style layouts. Think I'd prefer this device for 2 button or less Genesis, Game Gear and Sega arcade games and save the 3 or 6 button for the ARC. For that usage, they probably didn't need an RK3566. Though it makes me wish we had an ARC with a better chipset for Saturn, Dreamcast, Naomi and the higher end Sega arcade games. Could work as a good NEO-GEO portable too.
I'm a huge Sega fan so seeing this is so tempting, even though I have so many other better handhelds to play on. It's as cute and toy-like charming as the red Game Gear Micro but actually playable. Should I get it????? So tempted
Interesting that the Game Gear had a 3.2” screen, which makes me wonder if they added the overlay to keep the original screen size. 🤔 I’d have to agree with you that I’d rather play GG without overlays though!
yeah every time i see something that tries to invoke sega vibes i think that the arc probably does it more solidly. anbernic should really just make a new arc with a better screen and internals enough to adequately emulate saturn
Starting to think about getting something for my kids, so this toy-like option could be quite nice and the one Powkiddy you recently reviewed, Feels impossible to remember these names. I have the Miyoo Mini Plus which I love but the kids (8 and 12) will definitely want something "cooler looking" :D
@@imas234 i really like my rgb30 with arkos but i'm gonna upgrade to cube or a1 unicorn. h700 is more on par with rk3326. there are a nice variety of handheld choices for them
Well, I don't remember if the D-Pad always felt like it does now that the Game Gear is 30+ years old, but yeah, my GG D-Pad also feel quite bad in comparison to the great Mega Drive and Saturn D-Pads (actually there are different revisions of the MD D-Pad and I got some official SEGA controllers that have quite the bad ones). Btw, what I really miss besides the MD D-Pad on modern controllers are the bigger, concave buttons. The small convex ones dig into my fingers after a while, depending on the game played and the size of said buttons. Some devices are worse than others.
Not a bad price, but with current trends for the costs of living in Hawaii, how does Russ do it getting his hands on all these handhelds and UMPCs!? I mean affiliates and sponsors and patreon, devices out on loan, but I'd sooner abandon the island and re-locate into some mid-west American farmhouse with a Starlink satellite and marvel at the savings! Be that as it may, Russ' life is not mine to live. More important is to say hats off to you, Russ! Close the gap toward 600k!
Oh man. When the Game Gear came out, it was so hype... it was like a Gameboy, but with color. And given how disappointed I was with my Gameboy, I wanted a Game Gear. But then I tried one my friend bought... and it was terrible. I was _so glad_ I didn't buy one. Even now, going back to try all those old games, I haven't found a single Game Gear title which actually seems worth playing... especially on modern devices where I can play the "real" versions of most of the games instead of gamegear demakes.
awesome video as usual, russ! quick question: what are some other handhelds that have 6 face buttons like the rg-arc that you showed? interested in one of these strictly for fighting games. tia!
I wish the menu botton was round. I know that would deviate from the GG aesthetic, but the kidney bean doesn't look right to me because of the placement.
I need a PC handheld or a high end android handheld with the Game Gear form factor bc the Game Gear is my favorite handheld as far as how it feels in hand
Very capable machine... was hoping to see PS1 & PS2 gameplay.... but if it's running PSP proficiently enough than we can only assume the PS1 is near flawless
Game Gear, the eater of AA batteries. Would burn through batteries at a rate of over 1 AA per hour. Gameboy knew what they were doing with using older tech in their handheld since it was able to get about 7 hours per AA battery.
I love the Industrial Design on this handheld, perfect way to hide a bezel - dont!

Is there a video of the top 5 handheld that comes with games already ? im not that good on how to install games
Love the shirt!
Sick Fugazi t-shirt.
Game Gear was fine as long as you were sitting next to an outlet and had the AC adapter.
awesome video as usual, russ! quick question: what are some other handhelds that have 6 face buttons like the rg-arc that you showed? interested in one of these strictly for fighting games.
Love the shirt man!!!!
Good vid too
Very capable machine... was hoping to see PS1 & PS2 gameplay.... but if it's running PSP proficiently enough than we can only assume the PS1 is near flawless
I hope somebody creates an all-GameGear operating system for this.
Game Gear, the eater of AA batteries. Would burn through batteries at a rate of over 1 AA per hour. Gameboy knew what they were doing with using older tech in their handheld since it was able to get about 7 hours per AA battery.
