First, I really appreciate the time and effort you've put into this. That being said, the only thing I'd change about their original pattern is to not do the color change until slip stitching into the stitch where the beginning chain 3 will arise from to avoid the visible colored slip stitches.
Also.... Just sort of writing this as a reminder to myself to do just that when I get around to making this 😉.
Thank you again for the tutorials. I've been searching and hoping for knit and crochet items like these, ESPECIALLY cape style ever since Bernadette Banner came on the scene... It's just too bad I can't sew lol

This is gorgeous! I really like how you do the picots. The only thing I would do differently is the color changes. I would slip stitch over to the chain 3, then change color. That way, there isn't the ridge of contrasting color carrying across the shell at the beginning of the color change round.

This fits perfectly! My great grandmother was the last crocheter in the family, so all baby blankets since she died have been knitted. It'll be nice to have something to connect with her over!

I just purchased your pattern. I like to replicate patterns from the 1890s up through the 1970s. I use the late Victorian and Edwardian patterns to wear to piano ragtime performances along with the rest of my outfits from that era. I have a vintage hook conversion chart that states that a No. 6 bone or Amber hook is equivalent to a modern Size H so I’ll go with that. My crocheted and knitted garments are conversation starters! Now I need to search through my stash to see what I can use that is comparable to what you are using here. 🧶🧶🧶

So, small yarn compared to the hook, on every round, over stuff the stitches. Double crochets in the round, some mesh stitch rounds, granny/Van Dyke stitches rounds, edged with shell stitches, and then fold the fabric over to create the shawl.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it feels like you could work in rows for about 3/4ths a circle, do half the work, and end up with a more feminine, bouncy, and lighter shawl/capelet? Given, I don't generally don't like heavy clothes, and want my clothes more breathable than aerogel.

My great grandma was born in 1902 and taught me when I was 12. One of the things she did was shawls and I never have gotten it right.😊

I tried to make this last week but with 100% the wrong size yarn and hook 😅 I have this pretty pinky purple yarn I thrifted and thought the circle shawl would look pretty. It was turning out way too small, the yarn is very thin, and i was using a hook that matched the yarn size

Im thinking use a bigger hook closer to her j hook. You want the stitches to be loose n lacy. Like double or triple the size hook to get the stitches loose like hers were. Omgosh with those colors it would be 'pretty' n just in time for summer too❣ im thinking dark green n grey but then im not a young girl either, lol.

@@gaylescovel7308 i was thinking that, but I found a pattern that works with this size. I’ll try the capelet again someday

This shawl is very pretty! I was thinking about using a Hobbii Sultan Cotton Cake but I can’t decide whether to use it just as it plays out or when there’s a color change use the dark outside color then when you go back to white I would go back to the lighter center color. What do you think about my idea??? Thank you for sharing this wonderful tutorial with us. Take care 💜

Beautiful! I imagine that shell stitch worked in a blouse top down style. Also, I followed your last mystery crochet video and joined rounds replacing the chains like you showed here and it worked out really great (a double if there were three chains and a half double if there were two) maybe consider that for the next time

That is such a beautiful shawl. Blue was definitely the right color to go with. It may not be in style but it would definitely be a conversation piece. I'd totally wear it.

I just finished mine and it turned out absolutely beautiful. Glam Mauve by Big Twist is what I used. I'd suggest making this shawl with it, but make sure you do it loosely.

Actually, I can also see making a cocoon jacket or shawligan (is that a word) by joining the sides with cuffs. You could make it in nice neutrals like maybe a natural with navy stripes or vice versa. Thank you for this tutorial!

I made 2 of these shawls. One from baby alpaca in dark peacock colors, and the second from brown sheep’s 20% wool and 80% cotton in the colors cotton ball and salmon berry. Both came out beautifully. I did extend the length of each group of rows so that it would work for what I want to use them for.

I have a technical question. You switched to the blue and then read directions. I got the first round, but you said the other rounds were chain five and then single crochet in every other space. You single crocheted in each space. Which was the right way?
