Hey all, it's great to see people are still finding this video all these years later. I figured as a bit of an update I'd address a few things. -Yes, I'm very much aware of the Tomba Special Edition releases that Limited Run Games are doing. Believe me, I've been watching updates involving it like a hawk since the day they announced it. I'm eyeing up the Whoopee Edition and will be getting it on Steam to hopefully do a smaller video covering how this new version compares to the original. -I know about the whole thing with the final boss having more attacks if you completed less events. I recalled years ago seeing passing mention about the final boss "having the attacks of all the other Evil Pigs only in the PAL version" on a wiki, but wasn't able to verify it by the time I was making this video. Figured it was something made from whole cloth since I couldn't find any other mention of it. Tomba Club did a great video actually going in-depth about how it works, but that also came out well after I was done making this so obviously it didn't get a mention. -The strange animation involving the Needlegators becoming elongated I have since figured out how to replicate. It wasn't my brain lying to me and I bring that and a few other ammendments up at the start of my Tombi 2 video. -While I haven't directly recieved any criticism for this video, I do want to preface that in the years since I made this there are a LOT of things I would do differently if I were to make it again. There are too many forced jokes, some remarks and asides are completely pointless or obvious that should've been cut, I wasn't able to fix a lot of my footage de-syncing when imported to Vegas, and audio balancing is the bane of my existence. I'm not gonna take it down or anything and I'm glad people are still enjoying it, but this is far from a standard I'm happy with nowadays. -If you're wondering if I plan on doing any more videos like this one, I very much want to. I have 3-4 projects in particular I want to get around to, but the reality is my creative drive is maddeningly fickle. I'm either flat out working on a project when inspiration strikes, or stuck in a rut unable to produce anything for years at a time. I don't want to go making promises on when/if things will be coming out and then flake on them. Never say never, but don't get your hopes too high. These videos are just a hobby for me and I make no money off of them by choice.
Honestly, this is still a great video! And I very much look forward to what you make next. (Secretly hoping for you to do Ape Escape, another childhood favourite of mine.) (Or Tail Concerto cause that was a demo I played to hell and back but never knew what the game was till a few years back cause the demo is all in japanese, still havent played it though.)

How are you not popular i mean I listened to this entire video and it sounded so professional like holy crap I would give you my subscribers if that was possible
The algorithm probably won't send more viewers my way until I do something more current. Though truth be told I like having a small audience, especially if we share an interest in something as niche as Tombi. If you liked this, be sure to check out the video I did on the second game. That one doesn't seem to get recommended as much as this one.
Traverse Town really is the musical equivalent of a warm hug. And this video is wonderful! I moved from Holland to Australia on the day this was uploaded, which means I'm several continents removed from my Playstation. This kind of felt like I was replaying the game, but with a really knowledgeable fan by my side. Thank you :D
This only has.. 72 views???? Are you joking?? This is such an in depth video. You are probably the most underrated UA-cam channel on the website. Keep pushing dude, one day the subs will come man. I appreciate you making such wonderful content for the few viewers you have. Such inspiring work,
I have a small audience and this game is far from well known so I don't expect it to explode. Still, it's a game I'm incredibly passionate about so I wanted to make the definitive video covering just about everything for a long time.
Jesus Christ, I can't believe I watched the whole thing! 😯 Especially considering I only played the demo as a kid haha. But I was always curious about the rest of the game, and damn what a wild game! 😮
Depending on how many event quests you have completed the last evil pig will have different attacks, and not just a time stopping move. He'll have attacks that the previous evil pigs have used, making the fight that much more difficult. The more events that you complete the easier the fight is. The less events that you complete the harder the fight is.
Yep, I saw the video Tomba Club made about it after both my videos came out. Shame I'm too much of a completionist to have ever known about it because it would have been a neat detail. Personally I think it would have been better if leaving the Last Evil Pig waiting while you finished every event made him MORE powerful.
Hey BlueKunai, I just wanted to say hello. I remember you being the very first person I interacted with on UA-cam back in 2007 when you used to upload Pokémon and KH music. I wish there was some way to see our old message history, but it's nice to see that you're still active here responding to comments. 😊 (I recently shortened my user name from Blahblahblah3210 to Blah3210 in case that might help jog your memory.)
Oh man, UA-cam actually having DMs takes me back. I think I talked to maybe 4 people during the time that channel was active. I definitely recognize the name, but I can't remember the contents of any of the messages from back then I'm afraid. Hope you're doing well!
@@BlueKunai I am. I’m not really a content creator but I suppose I sort of followed in your footsteps by uploading a handful of music videos haha. 😅 Yeah, it’s a shame that UA-cam has taken away so many of its features over the years. They actually made a point of burying the DM system behind a bunch of menus before eventually removing it due to lack of use (since nobody could find it anymore). If my memory serves me I messaged you for something innocuous like asking where you found the artwork used in one of your videos, then after your friendly reply wound up keeping a short correspondence. Anyways, I wish you the best. Cheers!
Rick turpentine says hi from kiwi village 😄 yup years later you got another tomba enthusiast that appreciate this vid just got an hour in and loving it!!
I wish this game was more popular, then this great video might be too. It took me ages to go from the demo of this game (included with spyro for some reason) to getting the game itself, but it didn't take me nearly as long as it took you! Glad I'm not the only one driven mad by the motocross
One of my favourite games. Got it back in 1999 after playing the heck out of the demo and again in 2006 when our first copy went missing when it was like in 150 AUD. Nothing has ever been made like it and I adore it. Great video!
Wait, pump rocks change color when you step on them? I never noticed that before and remember having to look up a walkthrough to work out what pump rocks were
Actually, had to figure this out myself but the Golden Flower grows after a certain amount of AP is collected once the mission is started. I once had a 99% complete file and eventually followed an obscure tip and started grinding enemies and it worked! Didn't know you could do it before saving the forest tho. Didn't know about the other two mighty fish locations either, very cool. Really awesome to see some of the cut content. This is why we need a remake/remaster that would add that stuff back in. Or just a Tomba 3 in this style would be nice. Thanks for doing such a great, in depth look at this game. It's a childhood fav of mine and undoubtedly my fav game of all time. I really liked how this was a playthrough, review, and analysis all at once. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on the second game. Only ever made it through that one once.
It wasn't until the playthrough I did for this video that it occured to me that that Golden Flower Event was tied to AP, for the longest time I thought it was entirely to do with the Evil Pig Curse. Tombi 2 will be an interesting video to make, because my opinions on many aspects of that game have shifted wildly over the many times I've replayed it since it came out.
@@BlueKunai Yeah for sure. I always loved the original. The second game was pretty good but really different. I subbed so I'm here for when you get around to making the next vid. I really need to do reviews of both games for myself sometime.

Oh my ! Tombi ! So much memories ! And I'm finding this vid only now ? XD I remember playing the demo again and again, waiting to get it for my birthday. I got it, played it, and then... the disc got broken. I still don't know who did this. Took me literaly 10 years of search to find it again in a shop, but there was no way I'd let that one go :3 One of the weirdest in the best sense games I've ever played, both creative and very generous with what it offers :3 Edit : I think the guy at the pond described the game best : "See you later, much later !" XD
Absolutely, I intend on giving it the Digital Foundry treatment to see how it holds up. I'm curious to see how it works through the Carbon Engine since it seems to be like emulation but with a bit more malleability.
Awesome In-depth look! I only played the demo of this but it made me a fan of the franchise none the less, I bought Tombi 2 when I was 10 and its my absolute favorite childhood game
Great Vid 😍 Very Helpful Im starting the game anew cuz I realized bout 7 hours in that I busted the barrel on the bridge and after watching this I realized Ive missed way more than just that so thanks for an interesting guide Cant wait to see Tombi 2 decomposition video (cuz review is just a too general of a word for a two-and-a-half-hour breakdown of a video game) And dont give up on this. It is clearly something that ur so passionate for. Dont let the low view count discourage u. Were here for u. Sending luv.
Very nice video! This was my first game on PS1 and I also play through it every once in a while. All the unused stuff makes me kinda sad, because i really want to see what the game could have been. Maybe there’s a script lying around in a developers basement somewhere that we’ll never know of.
Great video, I was happy to watch it. Looking forward to your video on Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return. Also I think the reason for the game came to be called Tombi in the pal region, tomba is Italian for grave or tomb.
This is such a ludicrously detailed video but if any game deserves this amount of love and depth, its Tomba. Thank you so much for this labor of love. It also makes me feel great hearing your taste in video game music which is an absolute home run. This kicks ass. Please keep up the good work when you feel inspired to make videos!
Im glad to see this video getting the love it deserves, i cant tell you how many times ive watched it the last few years. Cant wait until Tomba comes out on ps4 and i can play it again. Thanks for helping me relive it while i havent been able to play the game myself!
@@BlueKunaii agree. I watched you recap video of the new game, the movement in it has me pretty concerned. It looked really fast and abrupt, the originals movement is so smooth and manageable. Heres to hoping 🤞
So, I never actually played Tombi (Australian here, so I got the PAL release) to completion. My only exposure for the longest time was the free demo, which I think was either owned by a relative or I bought for said relative (who was the one who had the PS1, whilst I only had a Nintendo at home) as part of a demo compilation, I really don't recall - but anyway, I had no idea what the hell I was looking at when I played it. All I knew was that I had a blast playing it, and it was one of the highlights of my once every few years visit (they lived over a thousand kilometers away, so access was... limited). I've considered tracking down an emulator for it, but so many things just eat up my gaming... Anyway, thank you so much for making this video; it's really awesome to see the whole story of Tombi explored in such detail! Maybe I'll check out your other Tombi videos next...
@@MrNetWraith People playing the demo for Tombi but not the full game is absolutely the majority experience, so you're not alone there. I would certainly recommend checking out the full game at some point if you liked the demo, whether you go the emulator route or pick up the recent Special Edition release.
Great video, dude. I had this game back in the day, and used to play it in Swedish (I'm Norwegian, so it was easier to understand than English when I was young). So cool with this interconnected world, and the music is memorable as well. :)
This video made me so happy! it’s not easy being a Tomba!/Tombi! fan nowadays… Really appreciate the dedication. I had a very similar experience playing the demo disc to exhaustion and then playing the full game after a while. Oh and about the blue alligator extending its legs, that was real!😂 can’t remember exactly when it triggers though
Thanks for watching. I addressed the Needlegator thing in my Tombi 2 video complete with footage when I figured out how to consistently get it to trigger.
man, seeing this under 10k views and 3 years ago, 517 subs. criminal. thank you for doing this thorough of a retrospective on a cornerstone of my childhood. crossing my fingers you also played Dark Cloud for ps2. great video.
Thanks for watching! The numbers don't bother me, personally. I'm just happy people are still finding these. I haven't played Dark Cloud yet, but I do own it.
@@BlueKunai I find it has a similar obscure charm to it, though less quirky and more mysterious. great soundtrack too. highly recommended, when you get the chance.
God I wish they do a Tomba remake adding in all the cut content and expanding on what they originally wanted to make. Crazy how much was cut and yet the game is still fantastic
On a good note it got re-released so now maybe everyone can experience it that couldn't play more than the demo. It's still a good platformer even though it's nearly 30 yrs old. And great walkthrough 👍
Rick Turpentine says Hi from Kiwi Village! Don't know what that means but every association you mixed together for that one moment is so funny that I think context would make the injokes less funny. Anyways I beat this game on PS3 a long while back, some time around 2018, and seeing this video now makes me want to go back and try to complete it. Properly this time!
Thank you for your hard work and reminding me of my Childhood i got this game from my parents for my birthday back in the day. Sorry for my bad english :D Greetings from germany
Man, Tombi is my childhood, such a magical game with a huge world that feels alive, I really miss these kinda games, you don't really see them much anymore. Uh, I was aware that the game had a lot of unused content, but had no idea about the differences between the original Japanese release compared to the others! 😮 And I'm usually the kinda guy that loves snooping around in games and check out all the differences and such, lol, guess I just never thought of doing it for Tombi xD Interesting to see how the Evil Pigs were more of a challenge, uh, I still remember when I first finished the game, like, how disappointed I was with the final boss, literally beat it in like two seconds, lol. Since Tombi's like coming back now with a sort or remasterport or what, it'd be amazing if it was a combination of the best parts of both versions, like, japanese bosses with the improvements of the European/American releases, and perhaps maybe even restoring whatever cut content they can, with any of the original game's documents or the stuff that has been datamined over the years. But yeah, Tombi is an amazing game I think I'll never forget, this wild pink haired boi is gonna remain in my heart for the rest of my life, heh. Now to watch your video about the second game ^^
I only ever played the demo, but I love this game. I have really, really blurry memories of the fuller game and I have no clue if I ended up playing the rest or if that was some weird fever dream. Anyway, thank you. Also, hi from the Kiwi village?
54:35 yeah you're right, they do that if you wait long enough! It's a great way to farm green exp because, if you bite them when they're extended, they give a lot of points 2:09:03 lol Crash Bandicoot 3 racing levels music Great video! I subscribed
I swear me and you were playing the same games in the 90's, I instantly recognised the Klonoa music, PSX still has some of the best most playable games up till today. Also if you haven't seen it yet, it looks like another Kiwi made a video on tombi this year called Hidden, clearly us Kiwi's loved Tombi. I still ove it and I even made fan art of it back in 2012 or 13? I can't remember. Also I spotted your Pokemon stuff in the background, you don't collect the cards do you?
@@BlueKunai Nice, I'm the same I've been collecting since Intermediate, WOTC has the best card designs personally, I like the E Reader series too Expedition, Aquapolis and Skyridge. Are you on Instagram?
The barrel actually stops a whirlpool. If you don't push it into the water, said whirlpool will prevent you from entering that pipe taking you to the Mansion
You are NOT locked out of Silver/Bronze if you get Gold first. Read the scoreboard, and shoot for a time between two ranks to get the lower medal. The time difference is pretty small though so it's definitely tedious. Consider pushing back on the d pad towards the end for bronze.
Seeing how you max out the exps as soon as possible, I hope you still explain you can collect 3 different fish to alternatively max em out instead too. (Only about halfway in at the time of this comment. Great vid btw.)
29:08 it's a slot machine! There were/are multiple things related to slot machines in the game's data but none get used, though you can see that one still ingame.
@BlueKunai Actually with Baron you can return to the world to do everything when you are in battle. You can do with all pigs, even in Tomba 2, except the very last one :)
Watching years later excited for the remake- 55:00 - I have seen what you speak of. It’s an idle animation you can “walk in” on them doing it, it’s a stretch of their belly to stand on hind legs really tall and is very disturbing. Only done by those without shells. I think it’s meant to block a long jump from Tomba?
@@Emily-uq7dv Yep! I had one of the Tomba Club lads alert me to it after I finished this video and I was able to replicate it for a segment at the start of my video on the second game.

I had a demo of Tomba! I loved playing that demo and I played it so many times trying to finish it 😂 (not the entire game obviously) I always wanted to play it though.
That seemed to be a lot of people's experiences with how few copies of the full game were actually out there. And they'll finally get to play the whole thing when that new port they announced finally comes out.
What a great way to spend 2+ hours! My only complaint is how some of the added sound effects were way, way too loud. I kept having to mute during transitions.
Yeah, I dunno what happened with those. They seemed fine when I was editing with headphones on but were way too boosted when I checked back on the upload.

Im starting the game anew cuz I realized bout 7 hours in that I busted the barrel on the bridge and after watching this I realized Ive missed way more than just that so thanks for an interesting guide
Cant wait to see Tombi 2 decomposition video (cuz review is just a too general of a word for a two-and-a-half-hour breakdown of a video game)
And dont give up on this.
Yeah, that's usually the conclusion people seem to come to.
@@j1mmy69_ Hopefully by the time the PS4 version drops they'll have fixed the issues currently still present in the other releases.
Lovely video, looking forward to Tombi 2!
This was really well done.
Tomba series is my favourite. Great video. Would love to see you do a similar video for tomba 2 in future.
An absolute delight to watch from start to finish. Thank you so much for making this funny and informative documentary on this underrated game!🙏
Thank you for using the Toy Story ps1 game music in your video.
as an aussie I love you have the Tombi varient. such an underrated classic imo
same, so nice to hear it called the name i remember
Great video, dude.
I had this game back in the day, and used to play it in Swedish (I'm Norwegian, so it was easier to understand than English when I was young). So cool with this interconnected world, and the music is memorable as well. :)
absolutely incredible video and also helped assist my latest playthrough :)
This is a fantastic video
Such a great game. I have to complement this video and the format in which you put it together. Excellent job. I had to subscribe.
Great video! You should make more videos like this ☺️
The entire video is amazing can’t wait to watch the second :) btw the long neck needlegator thing you was talking about, I saw that too
Thank you for playing
I love this game and the sequel
I loved this video and watched the entire video. Just beat tomba few hours and loved it. Nice in depth retrospective on this gem.
This is an incredible review! I could cry with the nostalgia! 💕💕💕💕💕
God I wish they do a Tomba remake adding in all the cut content and expanding on what they originally wanted to make. Crazy how much was cut and yet the game is still fantastic
Loved the vid. The Forbidden Memories soundtrack is utterly godly.
Tomba in Italian litteraly means grave, that's the reason of the name change.
1:34 preliminary match theme from yugioh forbidden memories
I will watch this whole thing tomba is that awesome 👍
On a good note it got re-released so now maybe everyone can experience it that couldn't play more than the demo. It's still a good platformer even though it's nearly 30 yrs old. And great walkthrough 👍
@@amyhoard1222 Definitely. It's been great seeing demo folks getting psyched about playing the full game.
Kiwi Rick says “high” from Village Turpentine
Thank you for your hard work and reminding me of my Childhood i got this game from my parents for my birthday back in the day. Sorry for my bad english :D
Greetings from germany
Man, Tombi is my childhood, such a magical game with a huge world that feels alive, I really miss these kinda games, you don't really see them much anymore.
Uh, I was aware that the game had a lot of unused content, but had no idea about the differences between the original Japanese release compared to the others! 😮
And I'm usually the kinda guy that loves snooping around in games and check out all the differences and such, lol, guess I just never thought of doing it for Tombi xD
Interesting to see how the Evil Pigs were more of a challenge, uh, I still remember when I first finished the game, like, how disappointed I was with the final boss, literally beat it in like two seconds, lol.
No sweat!!! 🤣🤣 forgot about that.
54:35 yeah you're right, they do that if you wait long enough! It's a great way to farm green exp because, if you bite them when they're extended, they give a lot of points
2:09:03 lol Crash Bandicoot 3 racing levels music
Great video!
I do! I've been collecting a lot of the old Wizards of the Coast sets on-off for a few years now.
@@BlueKunai Nice, I'm the same I've been collecting since Intermediate, WOTC has the best card designs personally, I like the E Reader series too Expedition, Aquapolis and Skyridge.
Are you on Instagram?
so.. tomba bites his enemies? That means he bites.. the chicks too..
I was laying down, something about a guy in a village or something when you were in mouse town like an hour ago in the video
Close enough 😅

Great job on the video!
The barrel actually stops a whirlpool. If you don't push it into the water, said whirlpool will prevent you from entering that pipe taking you to the Mansion
@@Lunaraia Ooh neat. I never actually knew that on account of always pushing in the barrel ahead of time every playthrough.
You are NOT locked out of Silver/Bronze if you get Gold first. Read the scoreboard, and shoot for a time between two ranks to get the lower medal. The time difference is pretty small though so it's definitely tedious. Consider pushing back on the d pad towards the end for bronze.
You're correct. I confirmed this for myself in a recent playthrough and I'll make an addendum in the next video.
Tombi 2 please! Great vid.
Check my channel, my dude. I finished my Tombi 2 video a few weeks ago 😉
Amazing video!!
Rick Turpentine says hi from Kiwi Village 🎉 excellent watch 😊
Seeing how you max out the exps as soon as possible, I hope you still explain you can collect 3 different fish to alternatively max em out instead too.
(Only about halfway in at the time of this comment. Great vid btw.)
29:08 it's a slot machine! There were/are multiple things related to slot machines in the game's data but none get used, though you can see that one still ingame.
this game is so cool i love it! this and klonoa are my favorite jump and run games

@BlueKunai Actually with Baron you can return to the world to do everything when you are in battle. You can do with all pigs, even in Tomba 2, except the very last one :)
Yes, the needle gators can extend there bodies up, ive seen it as well
this is amazing. you should do one of these on the second game
Then you'll be pleased to know it's currently being worked on. Probably still a ways off, but the footage and most of the script is done.
Woohoo another fellow Kiwi who grew up with Winter Releases 98 as well how good were the games Tombi,Medievil,Ghost in the Shell,
Watching years later excited for the remake- 55:00 - I have seen what you speak of.
Rick whatever says hi or something. Bring kiwis? Anyways great vid man, it's a shame you don't upload more often. I'd def watch any old game retrospec. you upload. Thanks for the vid. Off to tomba 2s
I had a demo of Tomba! I loved playing that demo and I played it so many times trying to finish it 😂 (not the entire game obviously)
I always wanted to play it though.
That seemed to be a lot of people's experiences with how few copies of the full game were actually out there. And they'll finally get to play the whole thing when that new port they announced finally comes out.
Love the video. Did you ever play Ty the Tasmanian tiger?
It was on my radar but I never actually played any of them. I have them on my Steam wishlist to check out someday
What a great way to spend 2+ hours! My only complaint is how some of the added sound effects were way, way too loud. I kept having to mute during transitions.
Yeah, I dunno what happened with those. They seemed fine when I was editing with headphones on but were way too boosted when I checked back on the upload.
@@BlueKunai YT has chaotic compression. Regardless, you've got a new subscriber in me! Love these long form videos!
