The intention behind companies like LRG is there (physical releases for eclectic indie titles) but their very business model is almost always scummy and fails to deliver (late or just printing shovelware). Special Reserve Games are gone for a reason.
So I ended up getting the Switch version, had many more gripes and then took a bullet and got the Steam version to compare (as well as comparing to the original game). The reason the cutscenes in-game (outside the credits) look shoddy is because the game itself is running them through the emulator. The Carbon Engine does not seem adept to handle that level of fidelity yet, which makes the cutscenes fairly pixelated. In the Steam version, the emulator hits a trigger when a cutscene plays, stops the emulator, and then loads the movie file (found within the game's files) that plays the cutscene as uncompressed as they have it, making it look pretty nice! I'm hoping they can adjust this in the Switch version since that's the one getting a physical release. I'm also curious if you noticed any issues with the music. Playing the game with the original soundtrack it sounds pretty bad with peaks constantly. It's in both versions I played sadly. Both versions when using the remastered tracks also lack proper looping. It's not as noticeable for the Village of All Beginnings track, but it's VERY noticeable at Mermaid's Singing Rock where the song abruptly cuts back to the beginning of the song. It's like this for many songs as many have intro sections that are not meant to be part of the loop. I also found that the Switch version has at least a few instances where it plays the wrong song. After purifying the Haunted Mansion for example, the old "cursed" version of the song still plays and never fixes itself. This is true of 100 Flower Forest (Dwarf Forest) as well. It's a huge bummer as the new songs are meant to be a reward for clearing the area, so not hearing them (and they're clearly in the game if you go look at the sound test) is disappointing. The opening cutscene being stretched to 16:9 is so silly though! I don't understand why we can't change that (or the music for that matter, as at least the US audio for the opening is available in the sound test if you select the original OST), it doesn't leave a great first impression, IMO. You were definitely a lot nicer to this edition of the game than I have been, XD. So I'm glad you brought up some issues to the forefront, as I hope they do get fixed! I'd love for this to be the spark that reignites the franchise, but I want it to be the best it can be as well. So I hope all the issues get fixed before the physical release.
I can see the case for Tomba! being a Metroidvania. More than anything though, I consider it the ancestor to what's now known as trophy achievement systems; except done in a way that incorporates it into the game rather than just something tacked on afterwards.
I don’t know about every game but any game where you have a map you can explore and need to retread over and over after getting no abilities to traverse and progress pretty much qualifies as the heart of a metroidvania
Im disappointed they took away the PS4 physical release to try to boost the PS5 version. That's bull. A LOT of people still play PS4. Oh well, I guess they don't mind ruining more of their sales.
4:00 Tomba is a 'Puzzle-Platformer'. That is what it was categorized by magazines and sites back then. It is NOT a "Metroidvania"... that's just Gen Zers who see a bit of it and assume labeling it online and videos. Puzzle-Platformer is a established genre that's been around since the 1980's and was especially popular in the UK. Tomba has more in common with Dizzy's Adventure than Symphony of the Night or Super Metroid.
never thought owning this game 26 years later on a current system. love the game and instantly ordered a hard copy, should ship in december for anyone curious
This is my first run in with LRGs so I’m unsure what the gripe is about but the one thing they sure did mess up is the loading screens. It was a 660MB(max) game! It should NOT have any loading screens on the Switch at all.
I like to stay positive and I'm not a UA-camr expressing an opinion as a job, but yeah, not a lot of positive things to say and none of it is the original release of Tomba to blame
I wouldn't say ruin it's definitely nice to have it on modern platforms but for 20$ I hoped for a bit more than just literally emulating the PS1, not kidding this special edition contains the original ROM that you can boot up in any PS1 emulator.
The transition of scenery at 4:08 took quite a bit of time. Now, it's probably like that or worse in real hardware but if the game is being emulated anyway (with a custom engine to boot), they could've at least made an effort to speed up the loading.
It's actually a bit faster in the original version. Carbon Engine was made (from what I'm aware of) for 8-bit and 16-bit games, this is its first foray into Playstation games. It shows. It's one of those odd things of, "if you're gonna make a modern release, why not improve it?" of which there are quite a few areas they fell flat on.
The quest completion music is the best thing ever, i still remember it after not playing this game for over a decade, and i still own a copy on my playstation, such a great game! I also thought whoopee camp went bust, after releasing Tomba 2, so i wonder who has owns the rights nowadays, as i thought Sony was the sole publisher, of these games?
I hate any media that does the whole cropping of 4:3 and zooms it in just to fill a 16:9 screen. At least if you’re going to do that give us the option to play it in its proper aspect ratio. Does anybody think this is a good idea? I have DVDs of shows from the early 2000s that weren’t filmed in 16:9 so they do this cropping nonsense, without an option to revert to 4:3. It looks terrible.
The game is so expensive that I think a modern release is warranted. I still think they should've put both Tomba 1 and 2 on one card. It'd only be a 2GB card 🤷♂️
You know, it's been going up and down for the past 5 years. It was in at a downward trend, and I think now it's slowly crawling back up in price. It under $100 around $80 again for the longest. I think it's hovering around $100 now, basically if u want the original phys PS1 release, now would be the time.
@Septer_Sever that's so cool, I love to hear ppl finding expensive games for cheap and actually playing/enjoying them. Sometimes when that happened to me and I loved the game, I'd sell the loose cart/disc only copy and get a CIB. Though the PS1 case is one of my favorite artworks for that generation, the disc is so nice with the Tomba logo in the colors. Tomba! 2 is still a very good game and I'd recommend getting it if interested, gliding around in the squirrel suit is a ton of fun. It's just those dang 3D polygons on a 2D plane, they needed more 2D/pseudo 3D assets like in the first game. The map is even more confusing, but again it's a must play for fans. I know I've seen #2 as low as $60 or less in the past year, but ppl are trying to charge more right now cuz of the new release. I'm almost certain it will be much cheaper by Christmas.
I'm not familiar with this PS1 game. I don't have a Switch but I'm interested in playing the game. I'll add it to my list of games to look for on eBay and at retro video game stores.

unpopular opinion : Limited run sucks the magic out of anything they do, i swear i gave them so many chances, but everything, everything they do, is pure garbage grade, look at other companies, like Tengo for example, look at the remakes of poki and roki, ninja saviors, the upcoming ninja game end of this month, they all have the magic left in the them, limited run just shits out games to sell , not to make us happy......last one i got was that sunset riders knock off, it was without a soul, such a horrible game...never again, the only reason i got it was because it cost me $5, even those $5 were wasted on it.
Im already waiting for my collector edition. bad it takes time to get. Fun Fact, the game is on the store, but I found on ebay already slling for literally double of the price
There's no Japanese language selection for the game, period. The remastered intro song was made by the game's original composer. You can change the audio to be the original US PS1 release, but that doesn't change the music for the intro. Strangely, the US PS1 intro (which is an instrumental of the JPN song, Paradise, with SE) can be heard in the game's sound test. Why you can't switch it for the opening cutscene is fairly silly, IMO.
@@KirbyVolt Because it's licensed music. Both the opening & the ending of the game, both feature licensed music, so of course they can't use it in the remasters, without a ton of headaches. They're already working on a Japanese version for the game, but they said that JPN users have to wait until the fall, to get their hands on it, because they're using the international version, for this remaster.
Nope, that was one of my criticisms prior to release, but then they announced it was going to get a separate release. But at the price point of $20 for the digital, meh whatever. $35 for the physical eh... It is almost to the point where id wanna be annoyed about it, but Im not really.. for these titles I kind of like to have separate releases... But I get value wise especially when realistically its just an emulated game both titles could have been put together.
Anyone run into a glitch for the Let’s Make Candy event? I lost all of my ingredients when I put them in out of order from what the witch says. Digital version.
Yes, a "metroidvania" is any game where you have to backtrack though environments you've already traversed to get an item that unlocks more areas. That's all it has to be. "Every game" isn't like that, but Tomba is. Yes, it has an obnoxious Nickelodeon art style that clashes with Metroid or Castlevania to appeal to, well, you know...
I'd say Tomba! is as much a Metroidvania as Wonderboy III The Dragon's Trap or Monster World IV. It's much more of an "action/adventure platformer" than Metroidvania. But I see why ppl call it that now, it describes the gameplay well enough for newcomers. But it definitely has it's own thing going on. And Tomba! 1 is better than Tomba! 2, both are good, one is great.
While limited run games may suck I couldn’t help but buy 2 copies of the physical one for with one for ps5 I still own the original psx disc more than with it for actual preservation of a game I love 😊
metroidvania is generally thought of as “search action” as coined by yahtzee so yea if you search for things to unlock more of areas its a metroidvania
My biggest complaint with this re-release is the music is a tad off pitch and I feel like the difficulty is a little higher. I don't remember the pigs constantly bombarding you in the leaf forest
I'm a huge fan. Have both copies of yomba 1 and 2 complete in original case for the PS1. Won't be buying this remaster though. There's just no point honestly. Now if they had both games in 1 then that's a whole different story.
@shaneobrien5214 Well for one, this is an official release, and the original devs are involved with it. And there's never before seen design documents and artwork included. Sounds like a deal to me.
Was never interested in this game growing up. The cover art was the reason why since Pink was usually synonymous with anything feminine. Even though it’s clearly a male character it still felt weird at the time. These days I don’t care about that anymore. If it’s a good game. Thats all that matters.
If it was the best PS1 game why didn’t it get released again on PS2 PS3 best games go on every console you can buy this game on the PS3 PSN store digital I own this game physical bought it for $9.99 used at GameStop haven’t played it for years I might buy it for the PS4 but not for Nintendo switch that gives no achievements cause this game isn’t classic enough like marvel Vs capcom collection a game you can’t get sick of playing

I bought the digital on switch. Game is fun and hard as I remember. I didn’t buy for limited runs sake I bought it for nostalgia(that’s the only reason I ever buy from them). Never gonna buy anything physical from LRG.
may i ask why? whats wrong with lrg?
@@JaneTheDoe-id2vx so a few months back they were caught printing on cheap discs that you could just burn yourself. That made me kinda not trust them after that.
Limited Run Ruines Everything. They are the reason I make my own collector's editions now.
unpopular opinion : Limited run sucks the magic out of anything they do, i swear i gave them so many chances, but everything, everything they do, is pure garbage grade, look at other companies, like Tengo for example, look at the remakes of poki and roki, ninja saviors, the upcoming ninja game end of this month, they all have the magic left in the them, limited run just shits out games to sell , not to make us happy......last one i got was that sunset riders knock off, it was without a soul, such a horrible game...never again, the only reason i got it was because it cost me $5, even those $5 were wasted on it.
Im already waiting for my collector edition. bad it takes time to get.
Fun Fact, the game is on the store, but I found on ebay already slling for literally double of the price
eBay is known to do that for any preorder
@@Benjamillion scalpers being scalpers 😅
i would call this game "action platforming adventure."
So just say what it is a Platform-vania, which is basically what metriod was 🧐 and vania because it respects castlevania , so ya😏
I didn't know Crash Bandicoot 3 was called Tomba over your country.
Too bad no japanese intro even if you put the game on japanese.
There is no Japanese version yet, LRG posted the other day the Japanese version wont be ready until maybe another month or so.
Does this include Tomba 2?
Nope, that was one of my criticisms prior to release, but then they announced it was going to get a separate release. But at the price point of $20 for the digital, meh whatever. $35 for the physical eh... It is almost to the point where id wanna be annoyed about it, but Im not really.. for these titles I kind of like to have separate releases... But I get value wise especially when realistically its just an emulated game both titles could have been put together.
@@Madlittlepixel it's cool,I just thought it was a combo deal.
Anyone run into a glitch for the Let’s Make Candy event? I lost all of my ingredients when I put them in out of order from what the witch says. Digital version.
I hate that tomba went with this shitware, its a emulator and they lost there website.
Why the hell doesnt this contain both games??
Yes, a "metroidvania" is any game where you have to backtrack though environments you've already traversed to get an item that unlocks more areas. That's all it has to be. "Every game" isn't like that, but Tomba is. Yes, it has an obnoxious Nickelodeon art style that clashes with Metroid or Castlevania to appeal to, well, you know...
This is the best ps1 game?
of course not. The best ps1 game ♥is Tomba 2!
The best PS1 game is Brave Fencer Musashi 😎
So DuckTales ist also a MetroidVania...
Stop shilling for LRG. They arent worth it.
metroidvania is generally thought of as “search action” as coined by yahtzee
so yea if you search for things to unlock more of areas its a metroidvania
Yeah, in my review (ps1 version) I called it a mix between metroidvania style and Oddworld
I liked part 2 more.
Werd!
My biggest complaint with this re-release is the music is a tad off pitch and I feel like the difficulty is a little higher. I don't remember the pigs constantly bombarding you in the leaf forest
You don't remember, therefore you haven't played it in a long time to remember
I hate when shaders look like booty. It's a pet peeve of mine😅
It crashes everytime on my switch hope they patch it
Tomba time
Meh I could play it on retro arch on my pc for free, waste of money to buy that
I'm a huge fan. Have both copies of yomba 1 and 2 complete in original case for the PS1. Won't be buying this remaster though. There's just no point honestly. Now if they had both games in 1 then that's a whole different story.
Why people support limited run games is beyond me
The same reason you let it bother you enough to comment on it. Because they can. Live and let live.
@@theladleinvr1445 shouldnt you be taking your own advice here then?😂
@shaneobrien5214 Well for one, this is an official release, and the original devs are involved with it. And there's never before seen design documents and artwork included. Sounds like a deal to me.
@@Benjamillionoriginal Devs are not hands on involved at all here
@shaneobrien5214 They are if we have never before seen artwork and interviews from the staff
Was never interested in this game growing up. The cover art was the reason why since Pink was usually synonymous with anything feminine.
Even though it’s clearly a male character it still felt weird at the time.
These days I don’t care about that anymore. If it’s a good game.
Thats all that matters.
Limited run charge to much for the physical copy of this game in my opinion
Get a job.

I'm kinda done physical games.
Lovely colors, boring game play action and lame level design. oof.
Sounds like the words of someone who grew up past the PS1 generation.
Quality of life in gaming lexicon is the gayest thing I’ve ever heard.
