150B Written Review: www.stevehuffp...
Denafrips Terminator + Review: www.stevehuffp...
In todays video I talk about and review an exciting new streamer and DAC all in one. This time it is the HiFi Rose 150B Streamer, Preamp and DAC. I compare it to some heavy hitter DACS such as the Denafrips Terminator +, Chord DAVE, Weiss 501 and more.
I compare the streamer to my Lumin U1 Mini.
For under $5k you will not be able to beat this all on one for style, build or performance. This 150B has a nearly 15" touchscreen and can display a variety of VU meters, cover art and more. It even has an FM tuner in it that resembles an old school radio tuner from the golden age of HiFi.
I do talk about the cons as well, and why this replaced my Lumin U1 Mini for streaming duties. It works with Spotify connect, ROON, Today, Qobuz and even 4K video. Yes you can watch VIDEO on this streamer!! Thank you for watching!
Enjoy!

I bought this streamer 10 months ago. Sounds fantastic for the price and the app works great. Well built and the screen is huge and reponsive. Love it!
I`m soo happy with my HifiRose 150 B and its performance. Highly recommend this little pearl.
Perfect device, I even switched to Rose from ML 5101.
I have had my HiFi Rose 150B for a while now and I simply love it. It sounds great and I cannot deny that I love those VU-meters. I had a Linn DS before and I definately prefer the HiFi Rose.
Candid and honest reviews of Hifi Rose 150B especially its refined and not too punchy sound. No brainer for easy and soft listening
Some of the best analysis of hi-fi gear anywhere. We share photography backgrounds! Keep up the great channel. Tbh, I think you should run your channel as a business.
I have rs150B and ra180 amplifier with dynaudio heritage special, a great sounding combination
Hi David, that's interesting...I also have the dyn's...how do you use your Rose amp...because it has so many possibilities..?
@@pault.9724 BTL mode
There is clearly a daylight savings bug there but until they fix it changing your time zone should do the trick.
Yes I agree the 150-B is a lot fun to use . There’s a mountain of live concerts to stream onto your tv watching some of these spectacular concerts is the added touch . I use a Merason Dac 1 with the 150-B which replaced a much more expensive server and dac combination I’ve used for the pass few years the Rockna WaveDream Net server and WaveDream dac are superb however I am enjoying the 150-B and Merason more .
So you are using a DAC external to the DAC?
Interesting. I just had the new Merason DAC1 in for an audition and am probably going to buy it. I had the 150B in earlier and really like as well. I hadn't really thought about it as a streamer only but it might make sense.
@@badgerdms I’ve had both the 150b and Merason Dac 1 about three months there is a synergy going on between them that I’m liking very much I like this pair equally compared to the Rockna WaveDream Net server and Rockna WaveDream dac the server alone is the price of both 150b and Merason dac . Ive used i2s for years and ordered the Merason with USB port , I had a demonstration of USB cables and the Audience FrontRow is utterly fantastic with the Rose and Merason .
@@marks.2909 Cool! Thanks for the insight.
Superb invention. Appears as iPad with hifi sound along with extra ordinary feature.
Full panel touchscreens ought to be standard on most $500+ receivers/integrateds/processors from this point forward.
Such screens are commodity items now, as well as Android and the CPU's that run it.
Hopefully this is a harbinger of what may trickle down to the $1K or less level for HT receivers and other 2ch gear
Totally agree!
Agreed. Long over due. I was actually surprised Martanz did not take this path when the revamped their AVRs this year.
That’s what u said to the denaprifs Pontus ll then u abandoned the Pontus ll
I would also have liked to know if PONTUS II is better as a DAC than the Rose 150B
And the La Scalas 🙄
Warm, Plumb, Groovy, Deep, Soft and Musical highly regarded technical terms used in audio engineering.
“Well I’m an electrical engineer and I can tell you that if a McIntosh amp, a Mark Levinson amp, a Cary amp, and a PS audio amp each measure the same, then they all sound exactly the same. Measurements aren’t the most important thing, they are THE ONLY THING!”
When did two different amps ever measure exactly the same?
FYI HiFi Rose is a division of Citech, a Korean software company that was originally founded during the 1960s.
Fantastic Review. The pictures of the new hifi rose integrated looks really cool. Can we get a 150b sound demo ?
Thank you. As for sound demos, I will see what I can do!
I am wondering if you are going to review the new U2 Mini?
The LeedH volume control has really sparked my curiosity and I have a PeachTree Gan1 so no DAC required.
I have the LUMIN U1 and LEEDH has serious problems with my DAC (SMSL SU-9 ESS SABRE9038). I think LEEDH works fine with R2R. When it doesn't cut (which is the fault), it sounds very transparent, but generally better with the Pre Schitt Freya+ before the power amp. U1 has been by far the best purchase ever made!
@@luisrodrigonunezolguin7038 Thanks for the information. The Freya+ is a great pre.
I imagine the screen should hold up surprisingly well, considering it would not be “handled” with the frequency and haphazard neglect of an android smartphone. When settings are set, most you’ll need would be via remote. The rest would be updates and support, and company longevity being of concern. Really cool unit…Of course, most audiophile (that I know and myself included) probably wouldn’t use the same streamer for more than five years anyway. Wondering what used/resale would look like down the road :-)
Daylight Saving Time toggle?
How would the Rise compare to the newly announced NAD M66? Same price
If you didn’t need a DAC would you choose a an Aurander product over this at the same price point
I just want the display
Set the daylight savings time button. mine did the same thing until i set it for daylight savings.
How's the sound if u use the digital input for CD player/ transport? Hw many bits & khz when using the digital input? Thank you for the great review.
In a word - Fantastic. I use a PS Audio SACD transport via digital AES/ABU Van Den Hul digital cable. You can upsample, but there is nothing lacking in Redbook CD.
Использую rose rs 150b как ЦАП с плеером oppo udp203, переиграл мой meridian g08.
for PCM signals the DAC can run at 8…768kHz (8/16/24/32 bit) but for a CD player it will obviously ran at native 16/44 or user-choice upsampled up to 24/192 with 7 user-choice digital filter profiles
13:04 Welcome to Skynet
Did you try the rose 250? How is the Dac implementation in it compared to $1500 - $2k stand alone dacs ?
This looks amazing. Have you tried it with a CD player or Transport ?
Hmm, now you have me thinking about replacing my Gen1 PS Audio Perfectwave DAC and Wyred 4 Sound ST preamp. Only downside I can see, one analog input to the Rose where I would prefer two, one being balanced for a phono pre-amp.
She’s a beaut.
It's like a Timex watch - it does everything and most of which aren't important.
"The impression of sound with eyes and ears" is the sacred utterance from Rose. I suspect however, it's the emphasis on the visuals that takes precedence.
With eyes and ears, but no nose 🤣🤣🤣..... where is the "headphone" socket?......
Maybe you had to wait for the RS 520. Best of 2 Worlds?
Hello , nice review of course : what about apple music ?
You can set the clock in the option using summer time. Or what ever its called. Hit save and it will stay correct.
The one thing it doesn't do is allow you to use it as a upnp client. I have most of my local music stored on my PC served using monkeyserver. I really miss using it. Rose say that have no intention of adding it.
You can connect to external SMB share, if that helps anyone. Plus you can connect internal and external drives.
Rose's server is better that's why they disallow upnp
Still waiting for Tidal connect
This is one of the reasons I didn't buy this. Tidal Connect was actually a promised feature but now they are reversing themselves.
Are these cool looking "analog" meters working when these is no preamp and 150b is connected directly to the power amp?
Roon Ready, Tidal, check.... but does it rip CDs?
Sure, if you add the rose CD ripper: www.crutchfield.com/p_358RSA780E/HiFi-Rose-RSA780E.html
You can rip via a standard usb cd drive too.
what's a CD? oh right, i have all my CDs loaded on my wagon where I keep the fax machine.
Fax machine ???? Filofax lol
I'd take the NAD M33...You should mention this product as a very similar competitor. The M33 also has BluOS and Dirac.
The NAD M33 is an amplifier, the Hifi Rose RS150B isn't.
They are 2 different products.
@@Like_Whut Point taken :-)
In your reviews, which Dac + streamer combo delivers superior detail and slightly on the bright side. I keep running into warm and boring sound that destroys Whitney Houston, Ed Sheeran, Air Supply on Martin Logan F200 ribbon tweeter. What are your suggestions. Thanks
Does this have Home Theater bypass?
appreciate Steve’s review based on use case :)
you gotta try a linn streamer
Anyone else wanting WinAmp skins on this streamer ?
How do the VU meters work if the power amp is downstream?
Where would the Naim Uniti Atom rate against this as as an older streamer?
which audio filter did you use on rs150B
I want this!!!’
Still waiting for Amazon Music connect.😢
why do so few streamers offer amazon music??
Screen in my living hifi rack or in my car .. it’s not for me. I already have enough
Did the Bartok have the 2.0 software update?
Thanks
Thank you
Hi, did you have a chance to compare the RS150B to the original RS150 with the different dac chips used and also the Mcintosh MS500. Thank you.
I have been researching the ms500… I am a huge mcintosh fan and I don’t mind paying a little extra for items to have the “brand name” but really the ms500 seems overpriced.. 6K USD?
"People gotta eat"......
How do you think this compares to the Naim NDX2?
Same with rpi and a touchscreen for 200$
Nice, but the price is insanity.
Honestly any diff between this and like a Mac mini? Sound wise
COMPLETELY different types of products!
But Can It Run Crysis?
and can it run doom?
What happened to your Denafrips Terminator Plus? Has the Rose dethroned it?
The terminator was sent for review, was never mine. I almost bought it but didn’t. One of the better DACs I have heard and better than the DAC in the rose, yes.
@@HiFiHuff Well wishes, if you had to choose would it be the DAC in the HiFi Rose 150B or the the Denafrips Pontus II? Thanks!
Can it connect to michi x5 intergrated amp?
It can connect to any integrated app the fire or preamp
$ 2500 overpriced?
How? You have the iFi streaming DAC, Matrix Audio X-Sabre and Element all going off at between $3,500-$4,400 and this beats the pants of any of them.
Surprised it didn’t cost more
Why don't you sell your spiritboxes?
More disposable hifi. I've owned android consumer products since the start, they have always had a usable shelf life of about 5 years before the update spiral is no longer compatible with internal hardware. This thing is really cool but expect for it to become lodged in a whales blowhole within a decade.
What DAC is future-proof?
@@user-ex9zm7bg3x none of them. Spending big on great amps, speakers, turn tables, preamps makes a lot of sense as they will last generations. Spending big on a DAC has to be the most questionable decision in all of HiFi !
@@user-ex9zm7bg3x Here’s a clue: buy a $7 Apple DAC
I'm still very happy with my Musical Fidelity Digilog
But the Nagra style UI 0:02 is not holographic
Nagra and Berkeley would be badass dacs to own
That screen is bad to the bone.
Nice but for 4 grand I would rather buy an Oppo 205 or a similar rival.
The old and outdated Oppo has NOTHING on this!
5 grand. (They raised the price 30 days after announcing the product.)
and . . .
The Oppo is a completely different piece of equipment (disc player), and imho not comparable to something like this Streamer/DAC/Pre-Amp/Server.
$5,000. Ahh no
My small DAC audio gd DAC19 does better job than internal dac of my rose 150B...
This is a 3.5k mobile phone basically..... did you find the "headphone" socket on yours?.... i couldn't find one on mine ☹️
Did I miss your comments about how it sounds?
@3:30 to 8:20
Essentially, he is saying it performs as you would expect for a streamer in the $5,000 price range.
In my opinion, based on his description, i'm sure it sounds amazing.
5k for something that outputs MP3s?.
??????
It outputs a lot of formats, including lossless of course
What are you talking about!
What happens when that screen goes out. How do u use it. ?
Why should it go out? What do you mean? Instead of touchscreen you can control the player via its IR-remote or mobile app. It's like your phone: it keeps working with display off
when is the last time a screen went out on something? doesn't every device have a screen? ive never seen a screen faiilure. what happens when a meteor hits the earth? how will you will you use your stereo?
Display technology is so reliable now it shouldn't be an issue.
I bet someone could dig this up out of a desert 300 years from now and the screen would still work. That said, you could always just use the app on your smartphone, tablet, laptop, or desktop PC.
I have "burn in marks" on my Note 1 from the keyboard....... if i display anything white on the screen, i can see the inprint of my keyboard.....
In 5 years time, the same will be said for this, as its just a "mobile phone" on steroids anyway...... ☹️
Korean design!
Thankfully not CCP.
VU Meters were supercool in the olden days. Now they're either pretentious (take this, McIntosh!) or as cool as an old phone ringtone on a chinese smartphone.
You can turn this off. It's a display image, not a real VU
Sorry but I think they are still just as Cool as ever ! That thing is Beautiful !
Nice……….
Eversolo much better at this range. Aurelic the next level up.
Made in CHINA right? A free one to every UA-cam spruker?
These folks will sell their souls to the Chinese for a few bucks....
Made on Korea
Another Gatekeeping youtuber.....
what does that mean? what is he gate keeping?
Very little...... ☹️
$5000. pass
Agree...$7K CDN, pass without a doubt!
