A long time ago I survived fighting Plantera on Master difficulty with 2 health. I stacked up all my buffs and my luck, with gnomes and potions and stuff. Even Exquisitely Stuffed. And yeah: came out of it with 2 health.
I remember when people where fighting the devs to remove torch luck. It used to be that having torches that did not match the current biome placed down would reduce your luck, and it would be so harsh almost everyone was on negative luck all the time. Now torches cannot give negative bonuses, only positive ones
@@TheCoolBacon I actually made it before finishing it. I left it because he didn't quite mention that there where some heated arguments (by the forum's standards at least) about it with the devs Also didn't make that clear how bad it was, bad luck overrides good luck, that means a SINGLE badly placed torch would negate all your luck, and if you had a couple placed you would be essentially permanently on max negative luck

The torch luck is why the Torch God was added, so you would not have to worry about carrying the right torches For anyone that may not know, placing 100 torches in the same area (in a way that they are all visible in your screen at the same time) will make them start attacking you 1 by 1, if you survive the 100 attacks you get the ability to convert any torch you place into the torch appropriate to the biome you're in
Small tidbit of info: You cannot get ladybug luck when petting a ladybug that was spawned by statues or released by players. You can still, however, get bad luck when slaying them even if they were spawned by players or from statues with the exception of them dying to lava/traps or to hostile mobs. In hindsight, just try not to kill 'em and get the book from the furry!
I think luck is generally a cool mechanic in games. I kinda wish there were more ways to increase and decrease it though. The labor of love update did add a few ways, which is cool, like throwing coins in shimmer and wearing a Lucky Horseshoe (I'm not sure about this one, but judging from the new tooltip of the Lucky Horseshoe and the fact that the wizard gave a higher luck dialogue while wearing it, this seems to be the case.)
Wow, I learned something new today! I didn't know how luck worked in the first place, and the wiki was kinda confusing to me tbh, but this made it easy to understand. Thank you, Terrasteel!!
Just wondering about the zapinator, do it's projectiles get affected by luck for example with higher luck you'd get a stronger shot or with lower luck a worse shot?
I have been playing terraria since 1.2, and I was just so confused when luck came out I didn't bother with it, but now it can help me out a lot, thanks!
i tried this and actually got the full mining set from undead miners! torch god event is the first thing I'm going to do in a new world if i have enough torches
I still dont understand how much luck actually helps with monster drops. For example if I want a gladious item with a 5% drop chance and I use a garden gnome in my mob farm would it be around a 6% drop chance. I dont understand the N slider in the graph ether...
torches of different biomes will cancel each other if too close to one another, this makes getting torch luck on the borders of biomes (like snow and corruption next to each other) difficult. Bone torches don't have this issue being a lower luck value but universal for which biomes they can be in. So if you are placing torches everywhere for luck, bone torches should be used on the biome borders. Additionally bone torches are good for areas without a dedicated torch, like the standard caverns. As confirmed by the video and the previous response, there is no stacking buffs.
can we just get a stat sheet already rather than trying to guess or add up our stats? this stuff shouldn't be hidden or even vague for how important it is.

so wait, what if i placed down a normal torch down in lets say the ice biome, but also placed a ice torch close by. Would this over ride the normal torch ? I ask because i would really not like to go around and replace all the normal torches .
Man luck is very poorly implemented in the game especially at the beginning, since nobody would know it especially to casuals who just regularly play Terraria, why learn this thing when the game barely gives you an indication on your luck unless you talk to the NPC and that's also on top of RNG, I just wished there was an item what's your current luck is, or just removed it. Like for me I played Terraria a lot and I didn't know Ladybug luck exist, I only know "luck" existing but not this specific creature giving me bad luck if I killed it, wish there was an audio cue or text cue on type your luck is.
So, Killing The Guide gives you luck, The Guide summons a flesh demon in hell, And The Guide refuses to give helpful information in hardmode. Pretty sure he's not a cool dude.
After the wall of flesh has been killed the guide can sometimes say "I wonder why my predecessor spontaneously burst into flames. Hopefully it doesn't happen to me...", which means when a guide respawns they're different people
Although this luck thing looks complicated, at least i got a lava charm inside my first obsidian crate because i applied the mechanism on my playthrough
Couldnt you argue the higher drop rates with expert mode and master mode are affected by the luck system differently. Just a thought of something you could cover in another video.
I don't think it is any different, at most the luck change when it activates may be larger. But a 10% drop with -0.4 luck is still lower than a 15% drop with -0.4 luck
I think torch luck still sucks, for a very simple reason: biome borders. Let's say that you placed jungle torches in the border of an Underground Jungle, then there's regular Caverns just some blocks away. By just walking a few blocks, you can be in the Underground Jungle or the regular Caverns. This creates a problem when placing torches: while out of the Underground Jungle you'll not want to place jungle torches, you'll use regular ones instead. But once you walk a few blocks back, you're on the Underground Jungle again, and because the regular torches are visible on the screen, the luck given by jungle torches gets negated. This is absolutely awful. To counter this problem, they should change that so torch luck depends on the amount of biome-specific torches that are placed on a certain radius of the player. Something like: if X% of the torches around you fit the biome you're currently in, you get torch luck; if less than Y% of the torches around you don't fit the biome you're in, you don't get torch luck. While this might not solve the problem completely, I think that atleast it would be alleviated.
You reckon the devs do some complex study to fine tune this mechanics? Or they just start throwing random numbers and ideas and then make a couple formulas that match that? lol
“There was a section here about the touching distance math but c’mon that’s so boring so yeah gl seeing this” - the secret comment for whoever can’t get it.
They can decrease your positive torch luck back down ex: in the jungle you place a jungle torch, you now have luck when near it. If you place a snow torch next to it though it will lower the luck back down, but never below 0.
