Thank you so much!! I learned Illustrator last year but I've been messing with Photoshop a lot more so my Illustrator skills diminished a lot. This just help refreshed my skills in Illustrator.
Thank you, so simplistic, i never even knew about the pathfinder uses and the effects. I was supermanning things from scratch and wasting time haha. But always great to respect the learning process. -Cheers
Hey Jason, great tutorial! I have a problem - when I try to use the "Minus-Front" option (in this case we were trying it with the mouth) I get a terrible shape. It seems to not be working properly. Any ideas what could be wrong?
When you paste new cutting shape in front- right click- arrange- bring to front. Once it is "in front" of the mouth shape the "minus front" will go way more smoothly. If you are having trouble with pathfinder a really easy one to understand is divide (bottom left). It will break up all of the shapes - all you have to do is ungroup- and then delete the shapes you don't want. I have started using divide for my beginners since it is very straight forward. Hope that helps.
I have a few options for you to to try. The first is the updated Pathfinder Monkey ua-cam.com/video/hHl7J2nz_4o/v-deo.html The second is the Pathfinder for our Popsicle, but the mouth and face is the same as the monkey: ua-cam.com/video/QR3BofGBZRM/v-deo.html
Hi, I am brand new to adobe illustrator. I think this tutorial is wonderful but I have been stuck at the same point all afternoon.. When I am trying to intersect the little tonsil thing, I am getting this prompt: The filter produced no results. Please select 2 overlapping paths. Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong? Thanks so much!
The #1 thing I see that people get frustrated with is the copying-paste in front of the background shape. Usually this step is skipped over. The first thing I would try is copying the mouth-paste in front. Then try pathfinder. If it is saying no overlapping shapes- make sure the top is hanging off or overlapping. Then intersect.
Hi, as Teresa said, great tutorial. I'm also new to Illustrator and I'm having the same problem. Is there any possibility that a feature has changed with the current version of Illustrator (I'm using CS6) throwing up this problem? I've tried every variation of copying and pasting to front with all sorts of layer combinations and I still can't get it to work.
Think 3 shapes. Mouth - Mouth Copy- New Shape that will be used to intersect away. You are using pathfinder on the Mouth Copy and new shape. New version will work the same as the old version in terms of pathfinder.
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm trying to follow along and I can't find "option" to copy the "ear".. I'm using a Windows 10 laptop. Am I missing something?
Option is Alt on a Windows. Have ear selected (hold alt and a little white arrow icon will appear) you can also select the ear - edit (copy) edit (paste) for the long hand version of the alt/option shortcut

I am watching this tutorial and doing the same thing as u. But the command c and f and then intersect for the mouth. But is won't work in my illustrator..... It is so frustrating, do you have any tips?
An easy pathfinder option is the Divide Pathfinder. Select 2 Mouth Shapes- Divide - Ungroup Shapes- Then Delete the unwanted or overlapped shapes. The thing to remember is the Ungrouping after you click on the divide so you can individually select your shapes.
1. When using pathfinder double check that the object you minus front is arranged in front of the object you are cutting from. (bring to front) 2. Make sure you have copied/pasted in front the back shape. If your back objects are disappearing this is the step that was missed. A little different image, but at the bottom of the tutorial is a longer video on pathfinder: www.jasonsecrest.com/learn-adobe-illustrator-monkey-challenge/
Are you looking for anything specific? My first recommendation is to scale your .ai file to the size you are exporting to. If you are having any quality issues, start there first.
Are you on the mouth? The trick is to copy the shape you want to keep before trying to minus front. Otherwise the mouth shape will keep disappearing on you. Also - on the shape that is in front - it is easier to tell what you are subtracting (minus front) if you bring the object to the front (right click - arrange- bring to front) then select the 2 shapes and click minus front.
It's not working! I've selected the 2 shapes, but when I want to use minus front, it removes more than one shape, even the eyes and mouth. And I am sure that I brought that shape in fronf of. Sorry for my mistakes.
There are actually very few tutorials on this channel that are mac (mostly 5 year old videos)- here is the updated version (Beginner Guide) using PC ua-cam.com/video/s8EMdr9-P_U/v-deo.html

I dont have pathfinder how do i do this?!!!
Under Window- Select the Pathfinder Window. It might not be in your default settings. Alt/Option is the same key on your keyboard.
okay thank you :D
GOD bless you
I really like it but with the app it is kinda hard
It's not working! I've selected the 2 shapes, but when I want to use minus front, it removes more than one shape, even the eyes and mouth. And I am sure that I brought that shape in fronf of. Sorry for my mistakes.
+Kappa double check things aren't grouped together if multiple random shapes are being removed.
Silly me! I did it! I have copied/pasted in front the back shape and now it's ok. :)
Thank you!
