Got replies to da kine. Here goes nothing! 1) I love haleiwa & the Kahuku Superette for poke, which #IMO is da best on Oahu. 2) Hawai'i has such beautiful turquoise waters on the North Shore. Rippin' currents, but ... 3) In my experience, Waimea Bay is the only place where a one foot wave will knock you down. Current's radical! 4) Ahhh, Foodland ... where if you drive in through the exit way, and you are a haole tourist AND ... you are driving a convertible, then ... well ... the car might get pissed on and pissed in! I have seen it happen. Shame, huh? Many tourists do not know any better. They really do not. No one means to do what they do, usually. 5) Pupukea is where da rich and poor kine live. Surfer Kelly Slater live up there in the hills. Barry Kanaiaupuni lives up that way, too. He is a sweet man! Good that you can live in da bushes up in Pupu, because if you lose one beef, then da mokes no can find you! 6) Obake will come find you, on the other hand, if you do any kapu kine anywhere, though ... 7) Too many Kooks surf Pipe. Only go out when it is glassy flat, if that! 8) You can't even mention Oahu's North Shore without talking about Eddie Rothman, who is a THUG if ever there were one. Guy is one haole from Philly, who thinks he is 100% Kanaka Maoli. Nope, not! He lives to beef, BIT TIME! His son Koa is nice. His other Son Makuakai's a chip of the old THUG DAD's block! The Rothman's are infamous for ruling through intimidation which of course gives the REAL Hawai'ians reallllly bad raps, reps, and names! Senator Fred Hemmings hated Eddie, with good reason. 9) Giovanni's shrimp truck is AWESOME! Garlic shrimp is KING! Cash is cool! 10) I love Kahuku's Superette for poke, fresh hot fluffy rice, and the best sauce to put over it all, on the island, in my opinion. 11) LAST ONE under this video, anyway: The written laws do not matter on the North Shore. The unwritten code is that you must give a TON of respect to get a little in return, and ... then, do not even expect to get a little respect in return. That is just the way it IS! I mean, sure you can act any way you want to anywhere but, hey ... if you anger a North Shore local especially a Hawai'ian Kane, then, you really are cruising for one bruisin'! Thank you for your content. It is so rad and fun to listen to. Makes me want to answer back to da MAX. Happy New Year! -- Abbie
Love this video man! I lived on the island '65 - '69. On weekdays my family would go to Ewa beach; on weekends we piled into the Datsun wagon and headed to the North Shore. Wonderful to take the drive with you, full of memories.
A couple years ago my fighter and I came to Hawaii for the first time. My Fighter fought at Blaisdell Arena For the X1 MMA World Championship . I love Hawaii so much! Derek, thank you for your Channel. Even though I can't afford the houses there. Your Content is awesome brother 🙏
When I first got to North Shore two weeks ago, I looked around and realized I had finally found my people. I could live ANYWHERE along that fabled coastline. Even a hand built shack as long as I could surf everyday.
The first time I went to Waikiki was 1982 and I was 18. It was so beautiful. Since then I’ve been to Kauai. Maui, and the Big Island several times and finally returned to Waikiki in 2017. I was sad to see how overbuilt is has become. It reminds me of California and how overcrowding has ruined our beautiful state. As a native Californian, I can understand how Native islanders might feel about their land being invaded and violated with pollution, commercial real estate, cars, dirty beaches, filthy water, and oil drilling off our shores- California is now a cesspool. When we go to a beautiful place like Tahiti or Hawaii we are very appreciative of the beauty and nature. We have looked at real estate on Kauai and Maui but as a nurse I realized that there is only one Level I Trauma center on Oahu (Queens) and I don’t feel comfortable living isolated in retirement without more access to health facilities. It’s too far to the mainland if something happens and one needs access to care that may not be available. As we get older, these kinds of considerations become extremely important and I think a lot of people don’t realize how much it matters until they’re in medical trouble. Especially since Covid. A community hospital can only do so much for a patient and a level one trauma center only has so many beds…
Health care is a priority when deciding where to retire, and you bring up a great point, B. In fact, just about everyone has a story of someone in their family who had to travel to California (or somewhere on the mainland) to receive treatment or care that is unavailable here in the islands. Another cost of living in paradise, I suppose.
As a37 year critical care nurse I can tell you hospitals and health care differs around the country. You can go to the top hospital in the country and end up with a less skilled doctor and a poor hospitalization along with a bad outcome. It sometimes comes to luck. Why stay in an area that is supposed to be the best if you live somewhere you are not happy. Take a chance and live where you want. But no matter where you go remember to respect where you live.
Was blessed to call the North Shore home for a year, haven't been back in 14 years. Lived right on Kam Hwy not far from Pipeline worked at Turtle Bay, shopped daily at Foodland and had front row seats to the best surfers in the world. It was amazing, but the best part about Hawaii will always be it's people. Aloha!
12:15 there used to be a huge ROCK hanging over the road there when I was a kid in the 70s. The Foodland there at Pupukea used to be an abandoned building, then a feed store, now it's a foodland lol.
Yep! You're not off by much. B4 the Pupukea Feed Store, it was local Mom n Pop General Merchandise store. If you headed toward Haleiwa, there was IGA Store, at the present-day Ace Hardware, & Kit's Supermarket, currently at Malama Market. When IGA moved buildings, they occupied current Long's Drugs Store, circa 1977 or so. From Pupukea, if you headed E, toward Kahuku, there was Kammie's Market/Sunset Beach Chevron, just b4 surf spots Kammie's/Rocky Point/Velzyland/Sunset Beach....OooooHhhhh, the memory floodgates are just Overflowing!
I am an obsessive kind of guy who loves working in the real estate industry here at home. Mahalo for your comment and hope to serve your real estate needs.
hey! I just wanted to say I love your videos and it’s amazing that you are educating people about the culture in history of Hawaii. The aloha spirit needs to be kept alive and we need to make a change in the way that we function so that we don’t push the wonderful locals out. Prices getting higher, and jobs aren’t paying as much anymore. Thanks for respecting our Aina 💕
My family lived on Oahu while dad was in the Navy and it was the best time of my life...I hope to return someday and enjoy the fresh air and the ocean breeze...Hawaii No Ka Oi...
Finally stayed in North Shore, Haliewa, after having a couple pryer vacays on the Westside and the Eastside, and Still, The Shrimp Shack in Punaluu is the BEST shrimp truck. PERIOD! Nothing else compares. Tried other “famous shrimp trucks in North Shore and such, & have yet to find a better garlic shrimp than that yellow little truck on the side of the road. Look for it. It’s the yellow truck. And you’re welcomed! 🤙🏾
I know Ted’s is known for their pies, but their take on the garlic shrimp, oh man , no joke. They are soooo addicting that I will pass by Giovanni to get Ted’s garlic shrimp, that magical sauce they use, I will literally dunk the leftover rice along with anything leftover in that stuff!
Congratulations!! Wish we would’ve caught each other before then. Maybe next time if there ever is one, we can link up 🤙🏽🤙🏽 Thank you for your comment.
Funny I saw you say Oakland too, a big portion of my time living on mainland was spent living in emeryville/Berkeley shooting trap videos in Oakland before moving down to LA for bigger stuff.
I went to Kipapa Elementary 40 years ago. Lived in Hawaii for 4 years. Would love to go back to see how things have changed. Now I live the great state of New Mexico. Where we do have all the seasons. Great videos by the way.
I really enjoy your video's. I've traveled to so many of the places that you're showing and respect so much the attitude and gratitude that you have in showing them.
Pupukea, huh? Always wanted to know more about that place from people who actually live there. Please send us updates with your move and let us know how it is living there 🙏🏽
Just some background on Laniakea/Lani Moo dairy farm. Up until late-1990s, Meadow Gold Dairy had a small milk processing plant at Laniakea, where cows were raised/cultivated for milk. Then milk tankers trucked that raw milk to the processing plant in McCully(?) Maybe some of your other viewers out there can clarify location. Foremost Dairy also had a processing plant at current Gaspro/Airgas location. There were, at least, 3-4 dairy camps, similar to sugar mill camps, on the N Shore from Waialua to Kahuku/Laie, whose main residents were dairy farm workers. Keep It Up W/these videos....MAHALO
Growing up around Banzai/Shark's Cove area in 1970's, turning onto O'opuola will take you to Sunset/Rocky Pt/Velzyland(V-land)named for Dale Velzy. Also, Ted's used to be Sunset Market place. Kammieland, next door to Sunset, was named for Kammie's Market & Laundromat(remember those?!)-lol. Vacant adjacent property was Sunset Beach Chevron. Just thought would re-view this video. Pu'uO Mahuka Heiau is first R/Pupukea Rd
Another great video. Like everyone else, I keep my eye on the North Shore and dream, so to get a nice on-the-street look at the area is appreciated. It’s funny, it feels like the price of real estate keeps on tip-toeing just out of my reach in that area as I’m still a few yrs away from setting my feet on Oahu. Thx again for the video…
Chickens don’t crow brah 😂 Roosters Roosters! And you’re right about the surf! Surfed the North Shore and lived in front of Rocky Rights and Gas Chambers Lefts for 7-8 years. My first timeout we went out at Left Overs. The waves were about 2-4 ft. clean. Easy. Within a half hour the waves were 6-8 ft. and getting bigger. It was getting dark and never surfed waves that fast and powerful. I finally took off and it was so steep I hesitated and went over the falls. Got worked! Instant respect and got smarter about checking the surf report and knowing my limits!
Enjoyed the tips and stories. Im glad you mentioned the importance of slowing down in neighborhood streets. I wish i knew that before visiting for my first time. I turned into a neighborhood near Waialua and pissed off the locals because i was driving 10 above speed limit. It was embarrassing.
Love your videos..Missing North Shore everyday. When I hit the lottery here in Pacific Northwest will talk to you about buying some land in Pupakea..Lived North Shore 23 to 30 yrs old during the time the cliff collapsed at Wiamea.
Thank you for the video, bringing back memories when I lived there in the 70s and early 80s. I like grind miss the plate lunches places like Dots. Message is clear, no building keep Hawaii- Hawaii. My question is are more people leaving the island 🏝 these days. Must go back for 50th high school reunion lol.
my stomping grounds ,, the original Giovanni's used to be country side Haleiwa bridge on the right had the meanest cheeseburgers in town was long on a french bread $2.50 ,, Laniakea Farms was famous for it Texas longhorn steers used to be right there in the pasture huge ,, i remember the rock slide they ended up putting road across the beach at the bay for a couple months was kinda nutz ,,Pupukea is were u lived if u no more money and just wanted to surf had choke backyard shapers up there trying to make a name guys like Jeff Bushman some others did pretty well for themselves , the Heiau was a good place for surf check when it got big or drink a cold one just make sure u share say mahalo and just no go night ,, the Wallace estate is a monster english garden with original greek statues and one of the largest pools in the state with plans of a 14000 sqft home he also has a amazing property on Kam Hwy ,, log cabins and rock piles was always my fav spots actually lived in the log cabin the spot was named after right on the beach for about 4 yrs $1600 a month 3 bedroom was big bucks back then ,, left over 25 yrs ago to da big island but still come back plenty to see family and friends and work out that side plenty ,, true storie back in the day all the Aussi and Brazil guys slept with bats u never new when the brudahoods would show up in the middle of the night take u to the airport cause acted stupid in the lineup ,, some great daze
Long ago i think it was in 80 or 81 I took a woman out to dinner at the Pearl city tavern with the monkey bar. After that she asked me to drive around the island so we drove through Waikiki then got on kapahulu ave to kamehameha highway through kaimuki all the way through aina haina and around makapuu beach to Waimanalu and kahuku. It was winter so the waves on the north shore were very high. About a mile past what used to be kuilima resort and country club, it’s now turtle bay resort, there was water on the highway about knee high. Not thinking I decided to try to drive through and get on the other side of Waimea bay. When we got about a quarter of a mile the water was about waist high. The waves were actually breaking next to the highway. The car was actually almost floating and was not drivable. I was driving a triumph sports car. We couldn’t get to the lighthouse at Waimea bay unless we pushed it. So the woman and I in nice dress clothes got out in waist high water and pushed the car until we could drive the car again just before Waimea bay. It was amazingly fortunate that the water did not get into my ignition coil, distributor, and carburetor. I was able to get the woman home. Her nice dress was ruined though. Because the inside of the car was flooded I decided to let it dry out and then had it detailed and traded it in. I took a loss on the car and learned my lesson. Never drive through the north shore in winter when storms cause ocean waves to break over the highway.😂
Basically, yes. Parking along Kamehameha highway and in the available areas that branch off Kamehameha highway are your best options for parking. During surf competitions the parking market gets red hot! Getting there early in the morning, getting dropped off/picked up, moped, scooter, bicycle… these are just a few ways to hack the parking situation.
OK after hearing your dad on the phone you need to interview him. Please!!!🙏🙏 you can make it about real estate he sounds like a character he needs to be heard and seen
Great, great video, you really made me think that one day I would like to live on the North Shore. What would be the average price for a home back in the neighborhoods that are back from the beach ?
why don't you tell them how much parking costs are down town, rents and that you have to make mega bucks to own a condo or home on Oahu anywhere. I lived there for 10 years total back in the day when things were somewhat calm, not like today.
This guy is next level crazy.. might as well start giving away free homes. As if Hawai’i isn’t inundated enough. Mainlanders bursting at the seems to scoop up property and change Hawai’i as we know it. 🤦🏽♀️ You must think this is going to help you’re sales pitch? Oh braddah #stopvlogginghawaii
Mahalo for your comment. There are choke Hawaii bloggers and vloggers. We also get people moving back home to Hawaii who are from here. I understand your sentiment and hope to help more local people increase their financial IQ in my journey. Mahalos

I appreciate that! At the end of the day, it's all about respect for the land and the people.
Used to pick choke shrooms at Lani moo farms back in the 80-90's. Lots of good fields on Punalu'u side too. Ka'awa'a.
My sister lived in Haleiwa for 5 years. Sweet town ❤
I’m moving up to Pupukea in August. Hawaiian by blood but grew up in Alaska. Very informative video!

Love the north shore, still proper heaven on earth..
Such a great video thank you. I'm moving to the North Shore for the summer and am so excited to experience this place.
When I think of North Shore I think from Haleiwa to Sunset.

It all comes down to respect 🤙
Chickens don’t crow brah 😂 Roosters Roosters! And you’re right about the surf! Surfed the North Shore and lived in front of Rocky Rights and Gas Chambers Lefts for 7-8 years. Foodland in Laie is much nicer than the Pupukea one. But no alcohol though. But we do our main groceries in Mililani, much cheaper.
I really enjoyed this video… very informative. 🤙🏽

Because the inside of the car was flooded I decided to let it dry out and then had it detailed and traded it in. I took a loss on the car and learned my lesson. Never drive through the north shore in winter when storms cause ocean waves to break over the highway.😂
Crazy good story! Well …what happened with the relationship?

Great video thanks.
For the Pipeline Masters, where are the places you can park? Is it just parallel parking off that main road?
Basically, yes. Parking along Kamehameha highway and in the available areas that branch off Kamehameha highway are your best options for parking. During surf competitions the parking market gets red hot! Getting there early in the morning, getting dropped off/picked up, moped, scooter, bicycle… these are just a few ways to hack the parking situation.
Correction there is no city mill in the northshore. But we have an Ace hardware.

I lived on the North Shore for 11 years. Contrary to what he said, nobody needs a 4X4!

Great, great video, you really made me think that one day I would like to live on the North Shore. What would be the average price for a home back in the neighborhoods that are back from the beach ?
Teds bakery spicy garlic shrimp blow Giovanni’s out the water.
North shore is from kaena point to kahuku side🤙🏾
You didn't really cover KAHUKU.
"They didn't smell too good." hahahaha
Santorini in Greece
why don't you tell them how much parking costs are down town, rents and that you have to make mega bucks to own a condo or home on Oahu anywhere. I lived there for 10 years total
back in the day when things were somewhat calm, not like today.
Where's Kahuku? I feel you could have shown more or talk more about our history. Disappointed when our name is in the title.
Noted. We appreciate your feedback 🙏
He did Kahuku a favor by skipping it.

This guy is next level crazy.. might as well start giving away free homes. As if Hawai’i isn’t inundated enough. Mainlanders bursting at the seems to scoop up property and change Hawai’i as we know it. 🤦🏽♀️
You must think this is going to help you’re sales pitch? Oh braddah

Mahalo for your comment. There are choke Hawaii bloggers and vloggers. We also get people moving back home to Hawaii who are from here. I understand your sentiment and hope to help more local people increase their financial IQ in my journey. Mahalos
We are a Hawaiian and Samoan ohana trying to move back home and I appreciate him and his videos. Dont assume all mainlanders dont belong in Hawai’i.
