Across from that, where Cafe Haleiwa is, used to be Nakai's Saimin, kupuna to Shige's Saimin Stand in Wahiawa....
Mahe is so beautiful! She reminds me of Apryl Jones! I love how to the point she is and you can hear the passion she exudes with anything relating to Havaii! You are appreciated Mahe !
Just got back from Oahu. I left my heart at the North Shore. Love watching your videos and learning more. Hoping to visit again soon. Would love to retire there but probably not possible for us. The nicest people in the world live in Hawaii. God bless you all.
I like how y’all share and discuss the history as well as current conditions. You give the real stuff. When you went past what was, when I lived there, was country surfboards I cried. We used to play “ Goin’ up the country “ by canned heat as we crossed rainbow
The other half of selling is buying. People buying in the country tend to want to preserve/foster that country feeling. That’s why they choose to live in the country. We find this is the case in most of our residential real estate transactions here. Now if you’re talking about commercial real estate, that’s a different story.
Thank you for your reply to my commentary. You will notice that I deleted the commentary only because of the mistake I made. SORRY Mahe! Not sure why I mistook (then misspelled) your name. I'll check out your video on private schools in HI.
Lived in Hawaii back in the 80s for 4 years. First experience with reverse discrimination. I enjoyed my time there and didn’t let it bother me. I pretty much did what I wanted and liked the foods I was introduced to. I was 37 years old at the time. Left in 1990 and never looked back.
Love the shirt Derek. We’re you prior CG? Semper Paratus!. I’m a first time visitor last month. My family and I rented a place on sunset beach for two week and we absolutely fell in love with the place. I served in the CG and have a few shipmates that retired there as they fell in love with the islands. I definitely see why. Ever since our vacation, I have been obsessed with watching videos about the north shore, from surfing to real estate videos. Glad I found your channel. We can not wait to return, maybe a move is in our future.
Grew up surfing in San Clemente, CA and came to Oahu through the US Coast Guard way back in 1979. It immediately became my home (and still is, love Hawaii) and within six months moved to Haleiwa and then moved to a beach house inbetween Rocky Rights and Gas Chambers Lefts. I wasn’t in the Coast Guard the whole time as I got out in 1981 and surfed the North Shore until 1987. Watching this video showed me how much more commercialized the North has become! The North Shore back then was very country. Now, it is starting to look like town, sad. Keep the country, country! Please!

I really enjoy you two working together and I have learned a lot about Hawaii and the Hawaiian people.....sadly having been stationed at mcb kaneohe for three years i never got to know any Hawaiin people. After listening to you guys I wished things would have worked out differently, you are both very likeable.
Brah, it’s a long bike ride from Waialua to Haleiwa. When the last Eddie went, I was staying out at my buddy Kepa Lyman’s house, last house out at Kaena Pt, and we rode bikes from there to Waimea. Had to have his sister Aala come pick us up afterwards, cause we weren’t about to peddle back. But we rode bikes because the traffic was too insane from the Eddie being a go.
Y'all are awesome !! I have been following your channel for almost a year now, and it is so informative and well-made. You guys really have so much good knowledge to share. I will be moving to Hawaii in November and would love to meet ? These videos have really helped prepare me. Also, I definitely wanna watch the movie North Shore now, LOL. Stay safe.
If you can find it, 5 Summer Stories/Endless Summer are better representations of Hawaiian Surf culture...IMO. ESPN/30 for 30 has story of Eddie Aikau=Eddie Would Go. Movies based on James Michner's novels... Hawaii/The Hawaiians gives short history of Hawaii. IMO...North Shore is white-washed, bastardized version of Hawaii representation. But..."Nobody listens to Turtle!"

This is why there are more 'California' license plates down North Shore and why people who lived in Hawaii since small kid time is moving to the mainland... kinda sad. Locals are slowly getting pushed off the islands cause they can't afford to live here anymore... SAD BUT TRUE FACTS!

There are a lot of mopeds on the North Shore and throughout the island. Same with motorcycles and dirtbikes. Generally, mopeds aren't allowed on the H1, H2 and H3 (the 3 main highways on Oahu) but are allowed on most of the other streets.
Not too many people can tell you where Haleiwa begins or where Waialua starts.....Never used to have any Haleiwa till the business man came and decided to "cerate" Haleiwa...house of the iwa. The Iwa used to circle the harbor area fishing. Hardly see any of them fishing in the area now.....
@@movingtohawaii Thank You for your insights about the area. The harbor used be a really nice place to go and relax and fish. Uncle used to catch ika and mullet and the water was a lot cleaner then.
