Bedbugs are best treat by intense and prolonged HEAT! Cook the house or condo or apartment, for at least SIX HOURS at 140F or greater.
Roaches carry disease. They are the most uncleanly of insects. The only good thing about bedbugs is that they do not carry disease. Now, about roaches: Many people do not have the money to treat anything for roaches. Pest control can be expensive and if you are at the mercy of a landlord or you live in a condo, you have to rely on someone else's want, ability, and money to treat YOUR problem.
Bedbugs can migrate up to 165 feet from unit to unit. In any unit that is so infested, ONLY HEAT will treat the most severe infestations. And, heat must be used for HOURS up on HOURS. at 140 degrees F.
Feels like a lot of realtors tend to sugarcoat this topic and avoid getting specific about it. Props to y'all for taking a deep dive!
Aloha Brandon!! Thank you for the positive feedback. We never sugarcoat..sugar attracts roaches. 😎😁
They just don't want you in their island all their videos are so negative.
As a fellow ACE, tell Ian he did a great job representing our industry. For those who watched this video, I agree with this presentation on pest management. Ian knows his stuff. Aloha from New Mexico
This was a REALLY GOOD video. Was longer than the others but it flowed and it was full of great knowledge. Appreciate you guys touching on a topic that isn't one that people would want to discuss.
We keep it real!! Mahalo Omar. Let us know when you’re ready.
I hate to say it but I’m crossing Hawaii off my to-live list 😂😭😷
If roaches are a deal breaker - I understand
Yea I’d never wanna live there but you should at least visit. Yea Hawaii has a huge pest problem because it’s a tropical island. If you stay at a fancy hotel however, you won’t ever have to worry about bugs. I stayed at two hostels in Maui and never saw a single one. The first one was a private room and I was for sure I’d run into one given this huge ass tree that was outside. I was nervous the first night because of all the stories I had heard but I personally never had a problem. The food is amazing, the culture is rich, and the beaches … omg Heaven on earth.
Don’t let stuff like this stop you from experiencing a bit of paradise. When it comes to the bugs I think it’s a luck of the draw type thing. I don’t recall seeing a single roach yet I know someone that had one in their rental car..
I never comment but I just had to give you props for this video. Ian was awesome. Really appreciate the informative content. Mahalo!
Anytime! We want to give you more of the answers to the questions that you have, so please reach out with any requests and we will add it to the video concept list!
We lived in Oahu between 1963 and 1970. Had our house tented for termites. Lots more information in your video than I've see elsewhere. Spent week at Kiahuna Plantation on Kauai and fought roaches on the daily. German and the big guys.
One thing I always appreciate about living in a cold climate is that every fall, the cold weather comes and the bugs disappear. Sure they come back but generally we don't have the problems people have in warm climates.
I have a couple questions. First, I've been to Hawaii and when I went to Home Depot I saw that they don't sell pressure treated wood with toxic chemicals. I believe they treat the wood with borates and perhaps something else. Can you tell me what exactly they treat it with and does it work ?
Second. I understand that antifreeze works great to kill mold and insects in wood but if you put the wood outside unprotected , then the rain might wash the antifreeze out of the wood. Of course the problem with antifreeze is that it is toxic to humans and animals as well, so you don't want a dog or cat to eat it. Have you ever used antifreeze to treat wood ?
It seems to me that if I were building a wood house or even a concrete hollow block wall house, I would make sure that I treated inside all the walls, ceilings and floors before closing them up so that as pests came along, they would be killed . Is this a common practice in Hawaii and if not, why ? Or it so, what do they use ?
747’s and b-52’s 😂 👋 wid da slippahs and make sure you hit dem twice 😂
couldn't stop watching this. thanks for sharing real stories!
Our aim is always to bring real stories and experiences of Hawaii to you! Mahalo for the feedback
thanks guys, i really enjoyed this episode
This was fascinating!
Glad you liked it. Bugs and pears can vary location to location, but it’s important to know what you could be getting into. You just have to be diligent about cleaning here.
love this topic
I never thought I would vibe so hard to a few fellas talking about pests. Great, informative and entertaining video 🤙
Much appreciated! We've been talking about more collabs like this
Fantastic video! I really appreciate what you saying later about the local culture. If you got a problem and I say I'm going to help you with it I'm definitely going to help you with it. That is very much absent on the mainland. I have never experienced any place like that for myself personally. I grew up in Hawaii and live in Las Vegas now and people are way more cold and distant than that
So informative
Your best friend when you move to Hawaii is your pest control guy…..worth everything.
Omg what a great video. Now I’m gonna get rid of all boxes!!!!!
Those little german roaches LOVE cardboard!
This video is a great heads-up on pests! I remember visiting Hawaii as a kid and there being roaches in the rental car....
Also, watching Derek's face during this video was a bonus #heebiejeebies
Outstanding! I just bought a house on not-Oahu and this was a great video to see. Thank you both.
Lol on Not Oahu?
Oh my goodness this is giving me the heebie jeebies! But Mahalo to you for providing us mainlanders with information to address bugs in Hawaii!
Guarantee! Glad to be of service to you. Anything else we can do to assist your move let us know
Haha didn’t even flinch with that fake roach running across the screen🪳 at 19:00 brah!
Informative video. The expert did not elaborate about those BIG black plastic boxes that you see everywhere in public places to trap rodents. Are the rats as big as those boxes? What is inside the box? How often do the boxes get checked and emptied? Are the boxes the best method to trap? What is the most efficient method to kill them? He probably had a good anecdote about that
oh! ack! ugh! the bed bug story!! 🤢. But I’m glad you introduced your entomologist friend!
News flash bugs are everywhere!
If you feel something crawling across your face at night, nothing to worry about. It's just one of those large, flying cockroaches trying to get to the other side of the bed.
🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
omg you covered bugs
There’s a lot of ‘em here
Omg… I need to stop watching this episode, I feel like bugs are crawling on me at the moment! I know its just in my head but jeeezzz!! Lol
Welcome to paradise :)
Loved Hawaii but the pests were unreal…you will shit yourself when a giant centipede surprises you lol
You haven't lived in Hawaii until you've felt a centipede crawl across your big toe.
What are the things that look like lanterns that I have seen hanging from trees in Hawaii? It looks like some type of pest prevention but I don't know for sure.
Yeah one night I was alone watching TV in the dark and a roach crossed my path. I FROZE and the thing just stood there dancing right in front of me cuz THEY SMELL FEAR!! My brother came in and smashed him with a slippah.
Bradda, dakine B52’s can mess up da hair wen fly by. 😂😂
I avoided watching this video for so long as I still have nightmares of those ginormous cock roaches at grandma’s house in Wahiawa. Nonetheless, another great video! Question: Would Ian advise to have regular monthly pest control treatments as a preventative measure vs pest control only when a problem arises? Can Ian recommend a good local pest control company on Maui?
I caught myself making a scrunched up discussed face during this whole video! Lol. I had to relax my face :) haha!
Just keeping it real! :) Cool music btw

The American giant flying cockroaches are called palmetto bugs or water bugs!!!
Water bugs?! Wow, didn’t know that. Where do you call em that?
@@movingtohawaii As a child I lived in Queens, NY. (New York City). We called them water bugs.
Big roaches would be the same size as cicadas and large beetles. I probably wouldn't be too creeped out by them as I would be with a bunch of the smaller ones.
Walked into the kitchen just now and saw 3 B-52 chillin out there
3?! They’re teaming up!
- I live in Vegas and I though that traveling to Hawaii, I was getting away from all of those very same bugs lol. I found out today!!!! 🤦🏾♀️ I almost had a heart attack when a huge ass centipede crawled on me while I was asleep, pinched and clung to me when I got up to turn off of the light. 🤢🤢
4 am, watching this I noticed a centipede on the floor….out with the vacuum. Geezus.
This was a very uncomfortable topic to listen to but thank you for making this. It was so helpful! I grew up in Mississippi so all the information about the American roaches was spot on from what I experienced as a kid. I noticed you didn't talk about spiders, though. Are spiders a problem in Hawaii?
Well, we do have cane spiders. They are big hairy ones that I believe can leave a nasty bite injury on people when and if they bite. Also, there have been many sightings and instances of black widows. Other than that, I’d say the most common spider you’re likely to encounter here are daddy long legs, garden spiders, and those little guys who jump around and don’t weave webs. (Please don’t judge my spider knowledge 😂 I’m going off names we grew up with lol)
@@movingtohawaii thanks for the info! I was hoping you'd say Hawaii doesn't have spiders, lol, but it won't stop me from coming!
The 747s & B52s tis season hea in Vegas too now.. it helps to keep our areas clean & slippas around da house
From Pacific Northwest... Stayed at Iroquois point in Ewa for a month before living on North Shore for about 7 years. Had B 52's there...only thing I don't like about Hawaii..Hawaii state bird.Seemed like different parts of island had bigger roaches like Waimanalo and Wahiawa...Ironically roaches seemed even bigger on the Big Island. Huge 4" roach in empty Snapple bottle in car on drive to work in morning...was freaking nasty..
This is incredible and wonderfully balanced information. Nice that you are on Oahu. The other islands need to replicate your expertise. Perhaps you cannot comment, but can you recommend a well versed pest control expert on Maui? I feel that, as I look to purchase a home on this island, I need someone to take a professional overview of the property. So many line items to consider and seriously doubt many will take the time nor have the expertise to assist. Thanks for any information you may have. Thanks again for your expertise. I already saved this for future reference. Rick

The monthly maintenance fee on my NY co-op is $865.00. and worth every penny. The landscaped grounds are kept immaculate and exterminators are onsite. I see one waterbug every year or so and we have no German cockroaches!😱 I freak out whenever I spot one.
Keeping it real! Thank you for the great info!
Always!
🥴🤢…. Thanks for the information.
So informative...thanks! I guess my question is: If there are all those icky bugs, can it be paradise? 🤔
Good question! It’s paradise for them, I’m sure 😆

Good vid, do you have a link to this guys pest control web site?

poison can go into the water supply
This does concern me. Especially fertilizers!
I have a roach phobia and roaches drove me out of Hawaii. I worked all over the world (not much in warm tropical countries) and Hawaii Is the worse place when it comes to roaches. We had a walk in pigeon coop, when I was a kid, and I saw a black wall composed of back to back roaches clinging to the wall. I must have been frighten by those gigantic quick moving roaches, when I was a toddler.
Same here! Im a grown man but i always freak out whenever I see one. I kill it as fast as I can. Hate those things so much. I saw the infamous “black wall” too when me and some friends explored an abandoned theater a long time ago. I remember being so disgusted I rolled up my Jeans so nothing accidentally crawled on me 😖
I may have a solution to other pests on the island
What about Sharks?
Moving to Hawaii is living in a high rise help mitigate some pest control issues?
we had a huge rat living under our sink in the pipe and it started chewing its way in and it was horrified, we have to bring in workers to close the wall with metal sheets
Do you have to worry about this if you’re just vacationing at a resort for a week? Like in my hotel, restaurants, rental car etc?
Aloha, Ro. Unfortunately, I’d say yes. Some of these bugs and pest thrive in areas that have a high number of transient visitors (hotels, resorts, AirBnB, etc) and some you’re just more likely to encounter in less populated areas. Either way, our tropical climate hosts them all! For the most part, hotels tend to place a high priority on cleanliness and sanitation (especially now). It all comes down to being diligent about where you store and dispose of your food items/food packaging.
California roaches are nothing compared to Hawaii roaches! The ones in CA just freeze up when they see you, the ones in HI turn into Barry Sanders meets Superman on crack when they see you.
🤣🤣🤣 so true!
We bought an older house and discovered a colony infested one wall and under one floor area. The wall was detected because we were looking for a leak and their bodies had enough fluid content on the leak detector used a fluid detector for leaks that found them.
😱
There's giant cockroaches all over every island in Hawaii!!!
Don't forget about the Big Centipedes that hurt like a mo fo!
Just heard on the radio news 2 days ago about clumps of fire ants falling from trees on peoples heads on Maui
And the flies...
Don't eat your plate lunches outdoors or you will meet a bunch of flies buzzing around uninvited crash diving your lunch plates!
Irritating but True story!!!
We live on Kauai and have monthly treatment for roaches #necessity
Dry baits? Traps? I need to know!
I can only watch 10 min of this at a time !!! Then I need a break !! 😳🤮
🤣🤣🤣
i don't really see cockaroaches in Kailua
That, my friend, is a miracle.
@@movingtohawaii they're all over kaneohe though...you know what i noticed too..i don't hear the mynah birds taht much over there anymore neither.
I got a cockroach story! We lived in Mililani at the time and I was wearing white pants and we're going back through The Gulch and I was eating beef jerky. So look down on my white pants I think it's a piece of beef jerky and I thought I dropped some but apparently it was an American cockroach. The big ones. Yes and I've bit into that thing and they taste worse than you can imagine! It was a horrible experience. It was such a disturbing experience. It tasted so funky and it started wiggling and flicking around in my mouth so unexpected and so disturbing.
S T F U !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I’m cringing 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
I don’t believe this.
Kid or not, as soon as you pick up something you’re immediately able to tell what that object feels like. If you really were fast enough to pick up a roach it would began crawling and struggling to get out of your hand(s). Last time I checked beef jerky doesn’t squirm around..
I call BS on this story…
@@SoulReaperSlayer19 I can accept that you dont believe this.
There are many reasons it could have happened if you really think about. Maybe the cockroach was old/sick/dying so it didnt move very fast. Also big roaches fly there. Maybe it just landed through the window and was disoriented. I was super distracted listening to music and relaxing and having a conversation with my brother(we was driving and is was on the passengers seat). Maybe that's completely out of the realm of possibility to you that a person could pick up something that they weren't expecting to pick up or eat something they weren't anticipating because they were distracted. Cuz that never happens right LOL.
You are entitled to your opinion and dont have any reason to believe me. The trauma is definitely real 🤪
I love ❤️ this guy! Come take my money 💰 worth every penny.
Omg so gross. Gives me chills yuck 🤢
Haha sorry Jess. We can’t help but to keep it real and real thorough 😂
Will having a cat help?
Not really. Cats and geckos can help, but roaches will still get in. I had everything: roach poison spray, sticky traps boric acid, and I kept my shelves empty. And roaches still came in week after week. One of the reasons why I left Hawaii.
@@spektred woow how long were you there? It’s crazy you had to leave because of the pest😩
@@blisslove3758 I didn't leave because of the pests, but it was one reason why I decided not to stay there longer. And I lived there for 2.5 years.
@@spektred thanks for responding, have you found a place comparable? I’m looking into moving there, the pest are definitely a turn off but if it’s manageable Id still consider.
@@blisslove3758 You will find large insects in all tropical climates, plants and insects thrive in places where its warm and wet. There are other tropical places but I'm not that well traveled. I think Hawaii probably has the most mild weather though because of the trade winds. It's about 70°f/23°c and sunny almost every day with a soft breeze. But living there is not cheap, it's expensive, and houses are small unless you are a millionaire.
Best remedy for a rat is to have a cat & it will chase & kill it. Roaches fly there Hawaii? here in the southeast US we call them Palmetto bugs but they do not fly but they large & ugly.
I’ve def seen flying roaches in Pensacola FL 🤮🤮 haha
@@movingtohawaii Wow never seen them fly before. Mahalo!
OMG YA MAKEN MY DREADS ITCHEY BRA SMH.....
Bed bugs yuck!!!
What's worse: bed bugs or roaches?
why can we just eradicate them all LOL In my CAR wtf!!! omg, real fear is setting in. I only get the B52s American style thank god I have a real phobia of roaches. Luckily my cat is a straight-up killer he kills them and anything that craws even centipedes which I never had until last week. My termite guy always comes and asks me where he needs to spray I thought they looked around tested things I didn't know I needed to point out where they are how do I know. I mean sure I can see some of the damage where they are but I see that as where they have been maybe they moved on. I rent a house so I don't get to make the decision on who comes.
The spiders in my house take care of da roaches. Hot Shot liquid roach bait and Roach Motel are other solutions. Pest exterminators are overpriced and overrated.
Just takes $25 worth of HoyHoy and we good
Rats gross 🤮
It happens 🤣 Are there rats where you’re located?
I made it to 16:36 then no. Can't do it. Sorry guys I would really like to hear about the other bugs but no. F@$k that. Maybe a video WITHOUT the horror stories?
You're almost halfway there! But... I get it. We knew this would be a touchy topic but we decided to keep it as real as it gets. Better to share the worst and let experience rise above expectation. Ian is a professional in the pest control industry so we knew he'd have some horror stories up his sleeve. And he delivered. Maybe next time we do a pest video we'll turn up the facts and tips, and turn down the horror. (No promises though 😎)
Maybe you could put in a time stamp so people can skip over the bloody bed bug buffett?
@@christinamclaughlin8784 Time stamps are something we've been considering. Thanks for your feedback, Christina!
@@christinamclaughlin8784 This is Derek actually replying. Haha I love it/you! "F*&^ that..." Haha. The main take away is that there are bugs such as roaches and centipedes here, so we don't want you to go uninformed. On that note though, you just have to be more diligent than colder dryer places. If you're from Florida or something though, we aren't really showing you anything that you don't already deal with. Sorry for the grossness, but we hope you enjoy the videos on our channel overall and thank you for commenting and watching.
Been living here two months ... bugs are exasperated by inattentive/dirty/hoarding people, tenants, landlords, homeowners ... rotten wood, dirty drains, poor maintenance, trash, standing water, junk ... never have I seen such a filthy society, gathering of people. Absolutely disgusting bunch of folks! Throw in multiple peoples in one home, renters, generations, simply trying to live, Oahu is an infestation nightmare! Moving here? If you don't like insects? Think twice!?
Trips, with such a positive outlook and respect for Hawaii and our people “…filthy society, gathering of people.” You must be fitting in and acclimating amazingly. People talk about having a hard time here, but with respect and humility, it’s such an amazing place, right?
Poverty exists everywhere, at least the places I have lived. In Hawaii poverty is exacerbated by non-Hawaii residents bringing foreign money to the market and making it difficult for the basic working man and woman to compete without multiple jobs. It can be discouraging for some.
I love my people, my land, and those seeking to come here and add positively to Hawaii with respect and Aloha. Filthy society? Although I can imagine how one would make such harsh observations and I can imagine the areas you must be referring to, I just choose not to live in the negative. There’s plenty of positive to focus on out there and especially here in Hawai`i nei.
Much aloha.
