No, she oversang it. Look, Miss Patti has a very powerful voice, nobody can deny that, but a song like It's My Turn needs subtlety of delivery to bring out the poignancy in the lyric and the meaning. Sadly, Patti didn't deliver on this number.
I agree,,,,both women have such distinctive styles that are miles apart and I could barely recognize Diana's songs with Patti singing. Both women have been singing since the 1960's and are icons of music history. Diana's voice is soft and pure and Patti is in your face! I love them both, and addressing your comment.....Diana wears her emotions on her sleeve and when she heard "cal me" her smile was so heartfelt.
So many comments about Miss Patti...but not enough about her Class her great humor, her humility, her energy, her Great Intelligence...i love everything about her ❤
Pattis range is crazy. And there are only two singers who can play around on 'a breath' with high and low notes in a breath and that is Patti, and the late great Prince. Not many artist can do such.
For those of you who have not seen this tribute in it's entirety, Diana hugs Patti with a genuine and sincere embrace, and she joyfully thanks her for the musical tribute in her speech. They have since mended their feud and pay each other mutual respect for their talent and contributions to music. Patti calls Diana one of the best who's ever done it.
At that time, they weren't having the feud. That happened sometime later. But Oprah had them sit together and they found it was others pitting them against each other.
@goodboy3313 That's correct! And for those that didn't know, they were NOT FUEDING at that time. That started later and they just weren't speaking. Not quite a fued.
@OfficialHeyRico They didn't get along in the 60's. But as time went past, they did speak. This was not some long, drawn out animosity towards each other.
I remember Diana on The Oprah Show when she was asked to sing while sitting on the couch " It's my Turn" in acapella. When she got to the part "cause the rain aint gonna hurt me", she choked up and couldn't continue. Her tears began to flow and that's when a realised that those words certainly meant something very special, personal and heartbreaking to her.
I'm sorry that you believe people expressing honest opinions and preferences for a singers work is an attack on them---it is not. People have the right to express their views without being made into villains by you. Its not that deep. Singing is emotion, communication, style & tone count for a lot. Its not just about holding long notes, and being loud. Patti is a brilliant singer as is Diana. Patti shines on You are My Friend etc something nobody else could do justice. But this isn't her style. I note. Aretha as a great choice to tribute because ,she was very versatile & could sing anything & that is why she too was great to me.
Patti has an insane vocal ability. You can't help but marvel at her power and range. That said, her version of My Turn robs the song of every ounce of vulnerability. In Diana's hands, the song feels like it is being sung by someone who has never had the courage to step out on their own, but is determined to do so, and wants others to understand her need to step out. It's as if she doesn't want to hurt the person she is leaving because she still loves them, but she has to go and she wants to explain why. In Patti's version, this woman is defiant. She seems to not care at all what the person she is leaving thinks. She's had enough of having her life controlled. It's as if she has had the power all along and just got tired of not exercising it. With Diana, you get the sense that she is just discovering her strength and is taking a risk. Both versions have merit. I'm not choosing one as better than the other, just saying that Patti interprets the lyrics from a different perspective. As forceful behind the scenes as Diana is reported to be, her belief in herself seemed to evolve from the 60s to the late 70s until she finally felt comfortable leaving the protection of Motown. So, her version feels reflective of her life experience. With Patti, I get the sense she was always confident in her abilities. She never had to learn to be believe in herself. So, her rendition is basically about blowing past external obstacle more than internal ones. This is why we need all types of artists. Even when Diana sings songs of strength (Ain't No Mountain, I Ain't Been Licked), there's a hard fought sense of power she is had to develop. That's something I can connect to, as I suspect many people can. For those who are more naturally empowered, we need versions like Patti's.
Well said bro, it’s so refreshing to hear sensible authentic music lovers like yourself give an in-depth & fair analysis of two icons singing the same song w/o trying to put one against the other. I share your sentiment You rock, man 👊🏿👊🏿

Patti did her job. Her notes were in key and even though she was obviously hoarse, she was able to get a message across through the music and the audience enjoyed it.
She simply killed it patti and Diana are good friends let the past go patti is one of the greatest singers of this lifetime still doing her thing at almost 80 years old and sounds like that she truly blessed w ith the gift from God and the Heavens
It has been great to see other performers and industry figures honoring Diana Ross in recent years, acknowledging the tremendous achievements she has registered, talking of the doors she opened for others, and the style and class she has shown throughout her entire career. Some who once diminished her talents and accomplishments have reached a point beyond which envy or rivalry affected them and now can just honor the woman for her life, her art, her integrity and her generosity. All the honors are well-deserved, and there should be more to come, because at 77, she is about to drop a sensational new album!
I have to believe that Diana was just paid the highest compliment of them all....Patti....singing some of Diana's hits! Patti has the most powerful voice and soul. That is the Spirit that evoked tears of joy falling from another angels eyes!

Miss Diana Ross had to cry over Miss Patti Labelle voice in her tribute. That voice is so powerful and full of emotion and octives just beautiful and she sung it her way without taking away from Diana at all. Which Diana Ross is a diva within her self and a great role model to her children and grandchildren at 75. Just something about Patti Labelle voice.
the smile that Diana gives when Patti says "Diana, if you need me, call me" in 0:45 made my heart full of joy! She was very touched! 2:10 when Patti starts singing "it's my turn", Diana seems very happy, this is a very personal song to her! 2:50 "i ll let it rain" line, Diana gives a WOW!
