In this live-action film based on the favorite children's tale, the trouble-making Cat in the Hat (Mike Myers) arrives at the home of bored young Sally Walden (Dakota Fanning) and her brother, Conrad (Spencer Breslin), while their mother (Kelly Preston) is out. The family's pet fish (Sean Hayes) objects to the Cat's presence, but that doesn't stop the hat-wearing giant feline from trying to have fun, no matter how much destruction is left in his wake.

There two lessons I learn from this movie.
One, this movie sucks.
Two, never let anyone reeboot Dr. Suess books.
Out of context, this film is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. In fact, dare I say that I really enjoy this film no matter how dumb or bad it may be, and I’m not ashamed to admit it.

Fun fact: after this movie was unsurprisingly panned by critics, Dr Seuss’s widow forced movie studios to no longer make any more live action movies based on his work.

This is definitely one of those "so bad, it's good" movies. The whole thing is honestly just a mess, but the moments I do enjoy, (any scene with the fish, some of The Cat's more meme worthy lines, the "Fun, Fun, Fun" song, the cooking show scene, and the car chase,) make this mess a lot more watchable and, well, kind of fun actually.
I like it!
If I were to show this to a kid they probably wouldn’t be able to sleep for the rest of their life. Even I believe some of the characters look way too creepy.

I actually love this movie and it's humorous insanity. I watched it a lot as a kid, so you can imagine the overload of nostalgia that hit me while watching this reaction. I haven't seen the movie in over 5 years, but I still remember it almost to script.
The movie was awesome
This one of the first films I ever watched growing up. Others may hate it, but not me!
This movie is such a fever dream. I remember when it came out I was mad at my aunt for telling mom not to take me to go see it. Years later I finally got around to watching it and I spent the entirety of its runtime sitting in stunned silence. Thank you aunt Brenda for putting your foot down that day.
I remember having this movie on DVD, and me and brothers quotes a bunch of lines from this movie. When I was a kid, I loved how wacky it was. Mainly because Mike Myers played The Cat in the Hat.
Yeah! And he was sounding just like Shrek.
To this day, I still reference the “YOU’RE FIRRRRRRRRRREEEEEEEED” line
Fun fact: Dr. Seuss’s widow hated the live action version of this film so much, they stopped making live action versions of his books🙂

Sad fact: the widow you're talking about is actually his second wife. He married her after they had an affair for 13 years while his first wife was dying of cancer in the hospital 😞

People who grew up reading The Cat in the Hat book may hate this movie, but not me, I read the book and I love ❤️ this movie. This movie was part of my childhood.
Fun fact: The beam that fell in the background, Mike Myers didn’t know if the beam fell and his startled 😯 reaction when the beam in the background fell, his reaction was real.
The funny thing is, I felt the live action was a good representation of the book. What happens in the book? The Cat in the Hat barges into the house, causes mischief and mayhem, and all in the name of fun. To me the real lesson of Cat in the Hat is "Kids, don't let strangers into your house."
So the reason Mike Meyers did this movie was to avoid a lawsuit. He had agreed to do a film with Universal based on another one of his SNL characters: Dieter Sprocket. Meyers canceled the project, resulting in Universal and Imagine Entertainment suing him for a combined $33.8 million. As part of the settlement, Meyers agreed to star in any movie Universal wanted him to do, and they chose Cat in the Hat because Tim Allen dropped out due to Santa Clause 2.
This was a fun movie to watch as a kid, especially that commercial segment 🤣
Another fun fact: On the DVD commentary; Bo Welch, the director, is actually allergic to cats 🐈 because of the scene where The Cat scratches himself.
The Cat in the Hat had me rolling when I was a kid, and even if I watch it today, it’ll make me laugh. My favorite part was the “Dirty hoe!” scene. I just can’t help but laugh every time I think of that moment!
Fun fact: Mike Myers was going to be a part of a film bringing an SNL character of his into a movie. He backed out of it and Universal sued. They settled it out of court and details are rather weird but it was decided that The Cat In The Hat was the compromise.

This movie is really hilarious. It may not be a great movie, but it still has funny moments, great music, dark humor and good comedy. Kelly Preston, the actress of Joan Walden, passed away 3 years ago. She will be remembered by all fans

Even Dr. Seuss' widow wasn't satisfied with this. She announced after this movie's critical failure that there wouldn't be any more live-action movies based on her husband's work, hence the latest films being animated. The only other Dr. Seuss movies so far are "Horton Hears a Who" and another movie based on "The Grinch"; the 2018 version from Illumination.

The scene where the cat’s hat gets “hard” really put the final nail on the coffin for me
I watched this dozens of times when I was a little kid, and now that I think about it, this movie shouldn't work, so random, and I really like it. I don't know what it is. I've always liked this movie when I was really young and I still find it enjoyable. This, to me, is one of those so bad it's good movies.

This movie is the reason why there aren't any more live action adaptations
Though honestly, I think Dr. Seuss books are more adaptable to animation than to live action
then again, a live action adaptation based on an original story with great makeup from rick baker and steve johnson to gather another oscar would be worthy

This was the movie that made Dr. Suess's widow say "that's it. No more live action films." And honestly I can't blame her. I liked this movie as a dumb kid. But as I get older I start to realize why a lot of people hate it. Not to mention the Cat costume looks terrible. Reminds me of the Cats movie that came out a few years ago. Remember that?
I’m not gonna lie …I’m an adult and I found this movie hilarious. It’s a guilty pleasure to enjoy. It’s so random that it’s funny.

You wouldn't know from just his performance alone that Mike Myers was doing this movie essentially at gunpoint; after a "Sprockets" movie fell through, Universal did a bunch of contract chicanery, essentially sending him the ultimatum "be in this movie, or we'll sue you into oblivion."
And yeah, the art and production design for this movie is definitely bringing its "A"-game. I think the director was one of Tim Burton's regular design guys getting his shot in the big chair.
It should not surprise you that after this, he's stayed in the art department ever since.

There's still Horton Hears a Who. Arguably the best (least bad) theatrical adaptation of a Dr. Seuss book.
This movie is very bizarre but it has a certain charisma if one could say, no everything works some things yes and others don't but it's a guilty pleasure

I loved this movie as a kid but it still cracks me up all of these years later.
As someone who normally likes watching movies a lot more than reading books, "The Cat in the Hat" is probably the ONLY instance where I like the book way more than the movie. Lol
Actually, I might count The Grinch as well, but I'm still hesitant because I have fond memories of the grinch cartoon from the 60s.
Edit: Scratch that, I think EVERY Dr. Seuss book that was turned into a movie was better in some capacity, don't get me wrong, "Horton Hears a Who!" wasn't bad, but even then I thought the book was slightly better.
