"Toyota to Bentley" On-spot comparison! A great thing to look at with any new boat (heck even used) is the build time. There is a reason one boat takes a year to build and another 4 months. Looking at those reason tells you so much more then the layout of the boat. Keep up the good work! Be happy, be safe
Hey Mark. Thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, the SR 50 & 60 are on my list to get aboard. The challenge is that they are just soooo heavy and the D/SA sooo low that even I would not consider them for this project. Comfy…yes. But not my cuppa. Regardless, I will get on them. Thanks again.
I understand its a process and you try to rationalize it, as did we. We ended up at Sunreef 70 eco as our " best choice" so far. As a live Aboard cruising, comfort oriented, boat choice.. With not too many compromises left to tackle, we have 150 pages of wishes and changes.... Privilege is a great quality boat although it has a few things we do noy agree, for instance no boom protection at the sitting area on the roof. We live between middle east and Asia hence no cover is also a huge sun issue. How any one can say I do not like a forward looking nav station? We dismiss any boat including priveleg if they do not have that. its essential when on watch alone to have protection, navigation instruments and chart at hand...obviously you do look forward...and around to avoid problems. A backward or sidewards facing nav station seem highly unlogic to us.. btw the sunreef is heavy, but the privilege even more so.
Hi Walter. Thanks so much for the comment! I have yet to hear from anyone on the topic of Sunreef, so I’m excited to have a fan of the brand on board. The Eco70 is a spectacular yacht for many reasons, but. Has never come up on my radar simply due to its size. My focus is on owner/operator yachts that can be short-handed by Sylvia and I. I’m assuming that you would have some type of crew for a vessel that size. If not, I would be FASCINATED to hear all about your plans. Thanks again for watching and taking the time to comment. D
We're not planning on having crew, except for looking after our children. A large boat is only large when in restricted quarters of a marina. At sea all boats are small, and there's not much difference in how things work, although we will have everything either hydraulic or electric the set up will just be very central, which they always do. A 65 Would have been the ideal in between size, as 60 salon is just too small to get our ideas, about the perfect live-aboard. in. An 80 is very high and after being on one I decided it's just a bit too much. Hence 70, It's a work in progress, we have hundreds of pages of details and haven't ordered yet. We had ideas about the propulsion and many other details. These things do take time, and sometimes technical installations are in the way of what one wants. At the same time technical developments progress. As soon as things are confirmed, we consider to start a YT channel to record our findings. The boat needs to be built in Poland and we currently live in Indonesia, hence we have a bit of sailing ahead of us. @navalgazingatcampdavid
Hi Walter. That sounds AMAZING!! If you decide not to do a UA-cam channel yourself, I would LOVE to collaborate with you and document your journey on my channel! We can pull in the factory and do Zoom interviews as well as gathered video from your location and the factory. I'll also likely be in La Grande Motte in April, if you and/or SunReef are there. Let me know. It would be a ton of fun! D
I was kinda thinking of suggesting a naval gazing for the new 510 but seems like there's no available vessels for any boat shows this year according to Rob Poirier.
The 510 also has a connecting passage from one hull to the other through the master cabin in the 3-cabin layout, which is something I never seen on any other yacht before.
Hi Sally. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. Although a factor in sailing performance, weight is not the only component and may not be indicative of the actual performance realized by the vessel. Privilege is designed by a team of record-holding performance sailors who wanted a balance of speed, comfort and safety. It’s not an HH, but it is a good sailing yacht that is rock solid, safe, reliable, and comfortable for long passages. It all depends what your priorities are. Thanks again for your thoughts.
The price is very high compared to the competition in this video. I understand the 580's luxury, quality and unique features come with the cost but so does the weight. Nearly 30 tons is a lot to move. How does it fare in light airs? I'd like to see a polar chart of this yacht's performance profile. The sail area is quite generous and I do like the rig. The 580 has a lot going for it however lovers of the 585 are justified that something has been lost when that model was replaced with this one. The 585 interior along with the interiors of its siblings from the same era, in regards to layout, style and materials were on a completely other level. Not to take away anything from this yacht but the previous models were absolutely breathtaking. Maybe I'm just a sucker for the older more organic interior designs of past decades. Sigh.
Hey James. I’m right there with you on the older models and their interior but I’m afraid that our taste has been replaced with May finish and open pore wood in a more stark modern feel. Having said that, the quality and inclusions on the 580 are second to none. This is the “Oyster” of the catamaran world. The performance numbers are actually quite good for the target of this yacht. Honestly it really is the PERFECT Sylvia yacht…but Dave has to find the cash and that is problematic LOL!
Fantastic catamaran, but I don't understand something - why so small solar array and battery bank? For that size, they should be able to fit double if not more, w/o the boat looking as a Christmas tree... ?
Hi David, greetings from Spain, I love your video series, its like the ultimate guide to buy a catamaran. Btw when are you guys making the final decision? I found the Windelo very interesting, looks like the perfect combination of sustainability, performance, and price.
Javi, many thanks for watching and your kind words. I have about 4-5 years to convince Mrs. O and then it’s about 6 till I hope to “cast off”. My Father-in-law is from Barcelona, so maybe we will see you in our travels. Lol. I LOVE the Windelo, as much for their innovations as for their wonderful staff team. I understand, from another viewer who has one on order, that they have an interior designer who is ready and willing to work on the aesthetic hopes that I had… so who knows. Thanks again!!

The Privilege 580 is a beautiful boat.... it's one boat we compared to the L55....I admit the build, finishes and sail ability are higher end on the Privilege but we like the layout and home feel of the L55 better except we would want a owners cabin on the whole starboard side of the Lagoon and so far we have not gotten an answer to if they will do it.....also the uncovered top lounge area on the Privilege just doesn't make any sense to us....sitting uncovered in the sun in the tropics all day while sailing is not an option for us....the covered L55 top lounge is way better to me and my Sylvia aka Karen there is great seating plus rear facing lounges not under the hard top for getting sun or for sundowners if the sun is setting behind the boat plus there are layout lounges just forward of the helm if you want to be in the sun.....plus the front cockpit area of the L55 is a way better layout with 2 different coverings one for sit down daytime sun protection and one for stand up dew protection when entertaining at night......there is a recessed handrail around the saloon roof that can be used for rain water collection.....we also like the cabins on the L55 much better....a guest having to walk through the kitchen to use the restroom on the Privilege is just not right..... The privilege is a beautiful boat the finishes are spectacular....straight shaft engines are the way to go and the generators are a definite big plus....my perfect boat would be if I could have the whole L55 layout and the Privilege build and engine setup and instead of generators on the engines actual electric motors/generators mounted on the straight shafts which would accomplish everything the generators would but even better as they could augment the diesel engines to even better fuel economy in lower sun light or offer the ability to motor sail on just the electric motors with the right solar capacity and enough sunshine and also could augment the charging of the battery banks when actually sailing....ALL boats are a give and take....and everybody has their own taste.....I know this was long but there is a whole lot more we could talk about when it comes to the perfect home on the water.......great episode.....
Hey Soly. Yes, I have been watching that one with great interest. I didn’t realize it was from Barcelona. That’s my father in law’s home town. Thanks for watching and commenting!
The Zen 50 is an electric yacht that has a small optional wing sail to help it along. Very interesting concept but I wouldn't call it a sailing vessel if that's what a prospective owner is primarily looking for. Perhaps, if it had a more substantial rig with the addition of a self-tacking jib to harness additional wind power it would be a more balanced design. The renderings of this yacht are also not very complimentary aesthetically speaking, and I'm being kind. JMHO
I’d immediately remove that square mainsail. That Genoa is just impractically large. What’s wrong with the hull shape? Besides that the boat misses a decent cover for the fly bridge. Firstly because in asia you’d burn rapidly and secondly It’s rather dangerous to stand up whilst sailing. The boom can scalp a taller person like me. I miss the comparison with sunreef. We’re comparing boats, for me this is at least 10 ft too small.. matter of taste I guess. Perfection? I see a handrail stopping too early, a galley corner in the wrong colour. And other details.. it’s a great boat I believe that, but you have fallen in love with it. Personal taste. Price is never the argument.
Hey Walter. Thanks so much for your note. It’s always great to get the view from another person’s eyes. Comments like this have taught me a great deal over the last 10 months.

yeah...I don't know how to tell you this but monohulls this size have similar weight, and no one has said they "sail like a rock".
