Welcome Aboard a Review of the Aura 51: A Nautical Revelation
ua-cam.com/video/z6YICuaYmv8/v-deo.html
Ahoy, sea enthusiasts! It's your captain speaking from Naval Gazing at Camp David, and today's voyage is a special one, by request of Kristen and her first mate of matrimony. We're charting a course to the prestigious yards of Fountaine Pajot to board the yacht that has been making waves since its debut-the magnificent Aura 51.
Journey Into Elegance: The Aura 51 Unveiled
Let's dive into the world of luxury catamarans as we explore the Aura 51. Marvel at its sleek design, cutting-edge technology, and luxurious comforts that set new standards at sea. We'll size it up against the latest vessels to hit the market, scrutinizing every detail from the helm to the hull. Pricing, layout, and those little touches that make a yacht feel like home-we're covering it all.
"What Would Sylvia Say?" - A Tour With a Twist
Ever pondered what it takes to impress Sylvia? Join us as we roam each deck and cabin, asking that very question. We're looking for the extraordinary, the innovative, and the simply sublime.
Innovation on the High Seas: The Bionic Propeller
Our nautical gaze shifts to the Bionic Propeller, a marvel of nature-inspired engineering. Imagine a propeller that mimics the finesse of bird wings and the might of whale fins. We'll delve into this groundbreaking design that promises a smoother, quieter journey across the seven seas.
Vintage Value: The Pre-owned Perspective
Not all treasures are buried-some sail the seas! We'll take a look at 3-5-year-old yachts, comparing them to our guest of honor. How does the Aura 51 stack up against these seasoned veterans of the sea? The "Dave Score" will reveal all!
A Toast to Tradition: Wine and Art Pairing
Our adventure wouldn't be complete without a salute to the rich culture of our yacht's birthplace. Savor the notes of E. Guigal Cotes-du-Rhone Rouge 2019, a wine that embodies the spirit and history of the Rhône Valley. As we indulge, let's admire the nocturnal beauty of Vincent van Gogh's "Starry Night Over the Rhône", a masterpiece as timeless and inspiring as the vessel we celebrate today.

I love your review on the Aventura MY50. It's helping my decision on what I want for my family. Have you seen Aventura's remake of the MY50 into the awesome MY54 ❤. That change and it's pricing drew me from the Fontaine Peugeot Power 67. We're focused on a 6 staterooms yacht, extended range tanks with twin 550's, Off grid setup for long distance cruising. (PS: Wine 🍷 lover as well, will look into the "Aventura" wine you chose. Stay blessed, MSH to you [Make Sylvia Happy😂]

Hi, another direct comparator is the Nautitech Open 40, which is more expensive (and looks it) with a bit less interior space than the Excess 11, with same sporty aspirations. Chartered the Nautitech 40 in Croatia and it has a great sailing feel, as well as lots of space out the back in the cockpit area - Our favourite place in warm weather. More classic, sporty look (personal taste) We then saw an Excess 11 and Nautitech 40 Open next to each other at Southampton (UK) Boat Show 2024. The Excess was obviously built to a lower price point (flimsy directors chair backrests in cockpit, less sturdy interior finishes) and the halyards in the front, outside are awkward. Steps to coachroof small and could use better grab rails and more non-slip finish on coachroof. Pluses: Main 2mx2m bed, interior space. Didn’t sail her, so cannot comment on that.

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid

Thanks so much for the direct feedback! Yes, I agree. Given the choice it would take the Nautitech all day. D

Balsa-core below the water line is fine as long as you intend to sell it within 5 years. Then itsomeone else's problem.

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid
      @navalgazingatcampdavid 6 днів тому

lol. Now that’s a little harsh. There are many balsa core boats lasting years, if not decades, longer than that. From a structural perspective, balsa has certain advantages. Also if you used Elium resin, a balsa core and basalt fibre, you would have a truly environmentally sensitive boat.

@@navalgazingatcampdavid in the UK. 20 feet is widely available. Anything more is tricky. There are a couple in the Solent that are bigger. Some of the multi hull yards get a crane in but that's a once a year job. You may need to have wash down more frequently to prevent the hull looking like a flower bed. On the continent I suspect France has wider hoists. But not necessarily where and when you need them! I would be interested in hearing from others on the topic.

Something things of note that seemed to be missed, though understandable as you need to dig for them on the site or watch tours of their boats. After the boat is made, the team goes and does a full run down for a month, which includes marking all the nuts and bolts (so you can see how far you need to tighten/if they're getting lose, where to put them if you have to remove them, etc). Also, when you buy, a captain will stay with you for two weeks to train you on ever facet on the boat, which is great for beginners and experienced hands so nothing gets missed. I also heard they're setting up a base of operations in the carribian, basically a mini-resort/garage. So you can take your boat down for tune up/repairs and enjoy the area in some style while the work gets done, but I don't know if they came to be yet or not. This is just stuff I've seen from other sources.

I accidentally stumbled upon this review of interesting comparisons You could buy a Dragonfly for yourself because it's fast and fun but your wife won't be happy on it because it's a camper on the water where there's a lot of limited space to upgrade say a water desalinizer extra water tanks extra batteries for electricity etc etc if would go on longer cruises with it BUT that's why Neel is every woman's dream, a huge space for all the nonsense they'll never need, the engine room on those trimarans is incredible, everything is accessible and separate to the living space with several doors, top quality boats for comfortable cruising You mentioned Windelo, the biggest advantage of those catamarans is the position of the wheelhouse in the middle of the boat, protected from all elements, I call it a cheap Gunboat

This is so incredibly awesome and innovative. My only hesitation (aside from the spare millions of dollars (I'll get there one day)) is the detachment from the act of sailing. I really wish more manufacturers would provide a clip of the vessels' handling characteristics in various wind conditions. I realize it's just sail porn at that point but I still think it would be better able to convince someone one way or the other.

If this sail rig actually works it would have a great advantage in that since the masts get shorter when you reef you can fit under fixed bridges that other sailboats can't. You could have good sailing performance at sea being 100 feet tall, and then slip into small anchorages or canals behind low bridges at 15 or 20 feet tall. You could do the intracoastal waterways and the great loop and still be a sailboat on the lakes. That would be great, if it actually works. It seems like it would take about 3 days to charge the batteries to motor 100 miles. That could be an issue.

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid

You are right. Energy density is the key issue with electric drive, making it really just a gimmick at the moment (an expensive one). There is no such thing as an “electric“ cruising boat right now. All of them must have a diesel generator set on board, which makes the whole electric boat thing a bit of a joke.

@@navalgazingatcampdavid In boats , every thing is a compromise. As a blue water boat you want balanced ends so caring the beam further aft, while increases the usable living space,(sells at boat show) it impacts sea kindliness of the vessel. Also the biggest difference in a Passport is the integral keel ! This alone in my books makes this a far better choice then any of the other boats in this comparison for blue water sailing. Also the Passport has no interior hull liners . it is a stick built boat . Hull liners eventually de-laminate , this boat will be around in 30 years and still be sailing the oceans . There are a few things I don't like about this boat but I am sure if I had one built they could rectify them .

We have been living on our Catamaran (not an Antares) for 3 years. The Antares has such better quality and workmanship than those production Cats. Not even comparable. Watch SV Utopia or Travelsketch if you want a production Cat.

I think the Neel has one problem: too many sharp edges to bump your head on, in particular when you are about 6ft tall.. What is happening with your sound?

Hey Paul. I think the new gen of NEEL (52) is looking much better in these areas…and hopefully quality as well. Thanks for watching. D

I liked your video again. I’ve made remarks before about hundred percent for triangle needed for apples to apples comparison. In this one use Genoa area versus the Chip area for the Xquisite. I’m not sure why you didn’t use their Genoa so it would be an even comparison between everybody if you did, I think it would blow even the wave away on performance. I’ve asked Thomas about getting polar diagrams and things and he says he doesn’t have them though he does have them for his 60 footer.

Fascinating design. Does anyone have any experience at sea with these collapsible foils, though? Also, if you have the resources to be in this market, shouldn't you be considering renting instead of owning? Hire a boat with captain and crew and let somebody else worry about broken gear and dealing with harbormasters.

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid
      @navalgazingatcampdavid Місяць тому

lol! You and Sylvia are on the same page as far as captain and crew. No one has any production product experience with these collapsible foils. Benneteau has done experimental work, as have a few others, but this will be the first “production boat” to hit the market with them. Thanks for watching!

Would be great if you could make this sheet accessible online (as Google Sheets) and keep it frequently updated with new models for comparison. You can add your affiliate links there, so it may actually make you some money. Some saw other people doing similar thing with e.g. computer motherboards or computer PSUs, listing all models and their specs for comparison and Amazon affiliate links. They eventually become the go-to reference in their respective communities. I would also add some safety indicators, e.g. BSpd Jib, SSpd Jib, and KSI Jib, considering there's been much performance vs safety talk recently. PS. I wonder how HH44/HH50 would stack against these!

Gawd - you talk some rubbish. Obviously you are receiving some benefit for promoting the Rapido. $400k premium over the Neel 43 & you reckon it’s better? c’mon get real.

Hey Chris. Thanks for watching. Nope. No one pays me a cent. My thoughts on the two boats are based on the materials use, engineering, and performance numbers. Having said that, boats are VERY personal things and their value is based on your application and their ability to do what you find important. Thanks again for watching. D

Why on earth would you not be comparing the HH50 or HH52 to this boat? Or the Kinetic 54? Or the Cure 55? To include the trimarans seems a very odd choice indeed!

Why don’t they give accurate 100% fore sail area? And should they not use half loaded not dry weight? And a lot of them do not offer polar diagrams, and if they do, they are suspect. Balance does seem to be more honest though.

    • @navalgazingatcampdavid

Love your questions, and voice the same complaints in the specs section of almost every video. I defy you to find the 100% forward triangle figure with almost anyone other than Balance. And don’t even get me started on useable area, storage volume, fridge and freezer volume or black water capacity. Re lightship displacement…well the standard for that is a tad fluid too lol. So there is my rant. D

@@navalgazingatcampdavid thank you. You’re very conscientious. You think about the important things? It’s a shame boats cannot be like cars or iPhones or other products in the 21st century and have a higher degree of reliability. Never buy a new boat. You’ll be doing for the next six months is fixing everything they didn’t do properly from the factory. I don’t know electronic plumbing HVAC boats is just cheap for them trying to save pennies. Or perhaps it is because no better product is out there. On my IKEA 47 I’ve had trouble with everything. The generator the water maker, the air conditioner, constantly have to prime the water pump on and on. I have horror stories with my dealer. PERFORMANCE YACHT SALES in Miami. Never worked with them. Anyways, I didn’t mean to rant. Love your show keep it up.
