- Star Wars Legends and Canon have both given Coruscant a population of about a trillion. That's way too low. How many people could actually live on Coruscant? We'll find out today!
On today's Star Wars Legends Lore video, we look at the size of the planet, population density, skyscrapers, and much more in order to calculate a realistic planet for Star Wars' most famous ecumenopolis.

Oh man, this brings up so many questions regarding food, fuel, transport, pollution, crime etc.

Considering their tech level(Given this is star wars, so I understand their tech is all over the place) Pollution should not be a problem because they'll have large machinery for that sort of thing. food is provided by a number of other planets.
If most of the buildings were arcologies that devoted a significant portion of their space to hydroponics, recycling and synthesising fuel (e.g. if their fuel is anything our ours there are some fairly simple chemical reactions to crack CO2 from the air and H2O to come out with O2 and hydrocarbons, or they could have algae farms to produce oil or syngas fed off of unusable waste, etc. point is there are ways to synthesise fuels if you're willing to put more energy into it any you get out by using the fuel) with a sufficient energy source to keep it all going (maybe a satellite network of energy collectors around the local star directly beaming energy to the planet or something like that) and the planet would be a lot more self sufficient than you would probably assume immediately, although any raw materials would need to be imported.
What I'd be worried about is waste heat in the atmosphere, just the exhaust from vehicles travelling across the planet and to and from space would probably be enough to cook everyone in the planet's atmosphere. With that many people even body heat is a non negligible source of heat.

Jurassicjack3 gigantic light filters (essentially a really big sunglasses lens) could work in reducing heat from the sun, but at that scale Coruscant I don't think cutting out natural light would be enough.
Quadrillions (thousands of trillions) is a realistic figure for Coruscant's population, especially when you consider how built up the planet is. There are over five thousand planet-wide levels on Coruscant, and every level can contain a city layer complete with buildings and skyscrapers. These layers of urbanization extend almost all the way down to the planets core.

That 1313 levels from the surface. There is a defines point where you are counting levels "up from the ground" and "counting down into the ground". This is like counting sub-levels in an underground parking structure. And you do NOT build all the way down to the Core. The structure would evidently collapse under its own weight. Or the amount to support required would be some great there is no room for people to occupy.
And then you have the issue of why would you carve up a massive thermal reactor you can use to power the city for billions of years, provide heat as needed, as a source of natural, constant, no-fail gravity? It makes more sense that Coruscant will have vast sums of material brought in to build up the planet.

Hard to say - it would depend on how long - I think the long time ago thing is likely a left over from the earlier draft where Artoo was commenting on all this back to some future civilisation and his experience of it all (so for the love of Primus Disney Don't kill off Artoo) It may only be a referring to events a few centuries of maybe a couple of millennia at most.
It's a shame really as if you throw some of these ideas in a melting pot you can say that perhaps the long term story is for the Galaxy to find a way to have a stable system and end the cycle of light and dark dominance in alternative. That Artoo was a long term fitness to this very long process.
The depressing thing about that is that the cycle isn't going to be broken in the life time of any Star Wars fans and that the stories would need to be told for generations to eventually catch up to that mystical present day.
The Legacy era is the farthest in the future Star Wars goes.

Also on a side note there was also the idea of having the Star Wars Galaxies be just our galaxy in the past and humans time traveled to Star Wars times to escape some extinction level event. Which would mean present day Star Wars is just right now. Though that idea was scrapped
That's the problem with Star Wars at large - the universe seems empty. Most planets have populations of few billion people. That's really low. There is enough space in our own Solar system to host tryllions of people in it. Most of these would live on artificial habitats like rotating stations.
Remember, it's the same universe in which the Republican Clone Army numbered 3 million soldiers. Hah. That is just sooo low for Galaxy wide war. This would mean, that there is 1 clone per each system.
Basically, yeah. The galaxy is mostly unpopulated wasteland according to the Lore.

GeneralErlend I remember that Karen Travis stated that whole number of the army was either 3 or 6 million troops. Sure, that's enough to wage war on planetary scale, but nowhere near the number needed to control (not to mention conquer) whole galaxy.
Actually no to the clone Army being only three million it was explicitly stated that there where “1 million units well on the way” but no one has clarified how big a unit is. It could mean an individual clone or an entire legion of tens of thousands.

To really answer this question, you have to start thinking of Coruscant as a space ship. Its capacity isn't necessarily limited by how many people can fit in its volume, its limited by how many people it can support in terms of the material resources they need. A Trillion+ people is a lot for a planet to maintain. Those people need air. Those people need food. Those people need water. Those people are going to need power. None of those needs are going to come from the planets natural resources, since it no longer has any. I think its safe to assume that a very significant portion of Coruscant's volume would need to be devoted to these processes. Coruscant would need massive vertical farms, water filtering and reclamation, CO2 scrubbers, and fusion power generators. I think you can safely say that 50% of the planet would need to be devoted to this kind of infrastructure, and that's before you even start doing things like manufacturing goods or considering exports.
Here's how I rationalize the 1 trillion figure. Firstly, according to the wiki, this only includes permanent citizens, so there's gonna be quite a lot of unregistered/illegal residents on the planet. Secondly, if we assume that this is a figure from the Imperial era of galactic history, then perhaps it's only the HUMAN population. After all, as far as the Empire is concerned, humans are the only ones worth counting as real citizens, right?
Perhaps the Empire also only thinks of those who have done serve to the Empire as true 'Permanent Citizens', like Starship Troopers. Even then probably just the humans, so further brings down the figure. Even then though, if we assume 1/10th of the population is human, and then only 1% of them is in the military (A horribly low figure for the Empire), it would still give a total of 1 Quadrillion people, which would likely still be incredibly low for such a massive metropolis.
It was said about 60% of the planet’s population were humans.
Its implied that its the human homeworld, so its reasonable to assume that there will be more humans than one would expect. Plus... I'm pretty sure humans are the most populous species in the SW Galaxy anyway

Even for non-imperials, droids are not counted as equal to biological life forms so they would likely not be counted (okay there are noted exceptions but they are few and far between). While droids do not require the same amount of living space or amenities (parks, grocery stores, schools, etc) as a Human or Wookie they still take up space and resources. A lot of the planet's bulky sprawl could be dedicated to droids. This, combined with the Imperials not counting non-humans would account for Coruscant being much higher in real population but the official figures remaining far too low for what is seen. The droids are where we get to a planet with quadrillions of inhabitants, there's just trillions of intelligent biological beings by comparison so it seems like there's a lot of wasted space.

Yeah exactly like in episode 2 when Dooku meets Palpatine that area looks old, and abandoned. Maybe some light industrial activity. A place I wish they wouold show because its mysterious looking, but they'd rather show skyscrapers over and over. I do think they just threw a number up not thinking someone like this guy would give a shit.
While this absolutely accounts for the number being much lower than 1.75 Quadrillion, it won't get us anywhere near a mere trillion. Additionally, in almost every zoomed out space-entry shot we've seen of Coruscant, the city structure clearly spans the entire planet. Yes there are slightly lower density areas, but it's not going to be to a drastic degree. If it were they never would've expanded so desperately in the first place unless there's since been a massive population collapse, which would've been mentioned at some point.
The 1.75 here is already conservative in a number of ways as Eck points out. The population density has been lowered to accommodate for that *and* only half the area has been used to generously account for industrial areas as well as lower density areas bringing down the effective area. Even if we further tone it down to really generously account for lower density areas, lower levels being very sparsely populated, etc, it's still a stretch to reduce it by more than a few times over, which still leaves us in the hundreds of trillions.
It's easy to argue over what the exact number is, but the Manhattan calculation quickly and clearly shows that whatever the "actual" number might be, estimates of a few trillion or less are patently ridiculous. Understandable for the original writers, but with the evolution of the fandom over the decades and all the rewrites and retcons I'm surprised it hasn't been more clearly addressed; they've only recently even "amended" it to "trillions" rather than 1 trillion, but I guess ambiguity will have to do.

not all the space is livable however. how much is dedicated to planetary defenses, power, food, CO2 recycling? And its Star Wars so we know for a fact that its comprised of vast empty rooms with no clear purpose and no hand rails.
That would require imagining that 99% of the city was dedicated to those purposes.
It would explain why storm troopers and tie pilots are so expendable if you had that many people on just one planet, it also explains why the clones were phased out, they weren't needed once palpatine had full control, they were a waste of resources when you have so much cannon fodder at your disposal.

Maybe, and this is only has a devil’s advocate, Coruscant’s population density is affected by
1. Necessity of storage. Most of the planet is utilized for storing goods, artifacts, ships, and other massive objects required for the core world of a huge Space Civilization. Just looking at the quantity of ships flying around makes me wonder about the hangars, maintenance, etc. Without consideration to food and warehouses for space trades.
2. Large population footprint. Coruscant is filled with wealthy citizens, senators and other representatives which probably live in extremely large complexes. A single building might only house a few members of a wealthy family, and I bet there are billions of quadrillionaires living on the planet.
3. Many non residents. There might be a lot of people on Coruscant only of passage. Senators, diplomats, businessmen, living in fancy hotels and not being counted as a citizen.
4. Planetary support. Energy, oxygen, water, transport, waste management and the infrastructure used for these systems must be very space consuming.
5. Poor space management. It would be of little surprise that a city of more then 1000 years old would have a lot of unused, contaminated or archaic infrastructure, which are simply too expensive or inconvenient to upgrade. Outside of the very busy and fancy government regions, there are probably tons regions in advance state of decay that Coruscant authorities just don’t care about.
6. Massive building complex. Just look at the Senate building, probably the size of a large city used for assembling Senators. There are also definitely entertainment, Sports, industrial, religious, intellectual, corporate complexes in the thousands all over the planet using large amounts of space for very little residents.
about point 5: london (as well as many other capital cities in europe) is way more than 1000 years old but they seem to have way better management of space than modern cities (especially a lot of the car centric american ones) lol
probably too conservative. with that many levels, its should probably be like 4000 times the density of manila (lets assume a part of the levels are always used for something else, but to be honest, same probably also goes for manila), so even with the conservative 50% actual living space, it ends up 70.000.000.000.000.000 (70 quadrillion) people.

If I recall correctly, most of the levels were uninhabited or very sparsely inhabited, and lots of space was reserved for industry, storage etc, so 50% is way too much, maybe 10% of all the levels inhabited by people. Of course that would still be a lot more than a trillion people, in the hundreds of trillions or quadrillions, but maybe not tens of quadrillions

Fantastic video! I was intrigued with Coruscant when I saw Obi-Wan dangling from the probe in "Attack of The Clones" and flying through the night sky. The lighting, architecture, and sheer scale of the different structures was absolutely fascinating. I would venture to say that Coruscant was one of the few highlights of the Prequals. Thanks for the effort!
Timothy Zahn said in an interview that he estimated the population of Coruscant was 500 trillion and that much of the planet was industrial works, goods production, and utility centers to support the system. Then you have government facilities as well, for administration, military, and correction. Which would mean that far less than 1/2, closer to 1/4, of the planet is inhabited by its citizens and undocumented residents.

This is what I'd imagine. Doing a census of ~5000 levels of inhabitants seems like it'd take so long you'd be off by a billion due to new births before you got close to finishing.

I've done a calculation for it's possible population in the past and think I got something like 4 quadrillion. I took in consideration the density of the Kowloon Walled City which was even denser than Manilla. I had the same reasoning as you, not the entire surface is populated etc.
I mean... with such a huge population pool why didn't they just conscript part of their population during the clone war to serve as soldiers? We see in an episode that they are discussing very seriously to add 4 millions clone to the army but by conscripting 1% of a 1 trillion population they would get 10 billions men wich is literally 2000 times more than those 4 millions clones.

Lot of those books had some wonky statistics. There was one stating the mass of a ship over a kilometer long in thousands of tons. Which would mean the damn thing would float like a cork.

And, if I remember correctly, that top bit of area is only one layer. There are thousands of layers of city above the ground level, the lowest of which is solid ground, but that is not even habitable anymore due to lack of sunlight and air.

Yeah...this has crossed my mind more than once! thanks for making this. Mathematics are not my strong point, so I'm glad you did all that work and compared it to some real-world examples that I'm mildly familiar with, even though as of yet I've not been to New York, Toronto, or Manila...

I actually like to think of them using the european trillion here (in case you didn't know, here we have
1.000 = a thousand | 1.000.000 = a million | 1.000.000.000 = a milliard | 1.000.000.000.000 = a Billion and so forth
because, like, a billion is equal to a million squared and a trillion is equal to a million to the power of 3, so it kinda makes more sense if you ask me) meaning a population of Coruscant of a european trillion would be equal to an american quintillion (1.000.000.000.000.000.000) which is a much more realistic approach. :)
Edit: We also swapped the decimal dot with the comma, so instead of writing 1,000 as a thousand, we write 1.000, in case you were confused about the numbers. ;)

Ally Milne actually it is American in origin in its current use in the English speaking world. nor is it metric. the popular use of trillion is objectively incorrect linguistically, the tri- prefix is meaningless in the now common short scale use of the word. whereas as in the European long scale the tri- mean to the power of three, or a million, million, million or if you like a million billion or one trillion.
In fact short scale names are meaningless beyond a billion.
ps the UK does still long scale as well as short. just to further confuse everyone.

...i think we will keep using the american way as 5,362,000,000 can be read as five billion and three hundred and sixty two million instead of five thousand and three hundred and sixty two millions (i presume that is how you would say that) which can easily be misunderstood. Also, determining levels by the , or . makes more sense than remembering it goes by the power of a million. While the bi- and tri- prefix favors the European system, the American system is more practical. For the rest of the measurements stuff I will give the usual American answer of we just don't care.

@@marrqi7wini54 OK, I agree it may be a high number... they were probably just (yet again) not bothering to actually check if their numbers made even the faintest bit of sense. After all, we shouldn't trust the scaling judgment of people who tell us an 19km long Executor is "ten times the size of an ISD", when it is actually more like a thousand times bigger...
...but a number approaching 10^17-10^18 people/sentient creatures it's not entirely outside the realm of possibility given certain interpretations what we are told about the planet.
There are supposedly 5127 "levels". It is of course possible that a "level" is just meant to be "floor", in which case you get a much smaller number. However, it could also be that the levels are intended to be as expansive as the famous "level 1313" (it's a manner of interpretation whether the cityscape shown in the Clone Wars is _all_ inside "level 1313", or if the area just takes its name from, say, the level at which the pavement is). If each of those levels are as dense as Manila, you get 70000*5127*4.71e+8 = 1.69e+17.
There are even more extreme examples than Manila though. Kowloon Walled City had a peak density equivalent to 1.93 million/sq.km before they tore it down, and that was in an area limited to buildings at a height of ~45m. If we go for this most extreme interpretation, the cityscape is 230km high, facilitating a population of 1.93e+6*5127*4.71e+8 = 4.66e+18 (mostly living in squalor). If it is that high, they would need some planet-scale engineering to keep air pressures at both the top and the bottom livable. In fact, even they are just floors with ~4.5m per level, this becomes a problem - so they probably have such systems regardless of your interpretation. They must also employ extensive engineering to shed excess heat.
(ofc, none of the numbers one would choose meshes at all with what the rest of the shows are showing us about scale. Why is it worth bothering with years to build an army of 10 million clones? If they wanted to; within a day, they could probably fill their ranks a myriad times over by just going downstairs and asking for volunteers.)

I'm don't think Coruscant's population was necessarily distributed evenly. You have the dense under city. The upper levels populated by the wealthy and so on.

With 5,000 levels, you assume each level is populated on average at 1/50th the density of Manila. That leaves a lot of space available.
Let's say 100 trillion to 10 quadrillion to give a huge range of error (given the variety of the assumptions). Even then, that is at minimum 100 times the stated population.

Probably very little affect. All that mass on the surface probably isn't even comparable to the mass below the surface.

If Coruscant was in reality as densely populated and built up as you stated, it would be insanely dependent on intergalactic imports on pretty much every basic consumable. Almost no unbuilt landmass means next to no farmland, and even if they were using some kind of artificial farming system, I doubt it would be enough for Coruscant to ever be self-suficient in anything. I mean, look at the percentage of land to farmland on Earth and then remember that a lot of people still go to bed hungry each day. I dread to wonder what kind of famine a complete orbital blockade of a planet like this would cause.
A planet that size in the Star Wars universe literally has dozens of other entire planets, moons, etc. from nearby systems dedicated just to providing it with supplies and raw materials. Probably employees trillions just in logistics support.
Cannibalism would unfold for sure. And it would most likely start with people of one race eating that of another.

They would still need to import a lot of the stuff to keep those gardens running. Fertilizer, seeds and whatever advanged biologicals they need to upkeep them. I still doubt that they'd have enough of them to feed a proportion of the population that would be in any way significant.
Exactly the point I ended up making. It's silly how people do these number games about total sardine-packing population density without taking into account how you actually support all those biological beings, and inert materials for building and electronics; and that's without even taking into account super sci-fi air scrubber and biological synthesis technologies.
Both the Sith invasion of Coruscant and the Yuuzhan Vong Invasion would have killed most of the population simply because of the blockade.

Issac Arthur has a great video on Ecumenopolis. I highly recommend his series on future civilizations. BTW, we're talking about quadrillions of people for a realistic estimate.
That is true though around 10 trillion is the limit if you don't have a good way to deal with heat.
Those 10 trillion if spread evenly would need 2 billion buildings which holds 5,000 people each.
I would bet some parts of the city aren't as overbuilt as the Senate district. But that's just me.

I would say spartans take the floor as they are much more powerful and their armor is better, but the UNSC marines vs System Alliance Marines would be a fair fight because Systems alliance appears to have better armor but UNSC has better guns and equal huds.
N7 are NOT super soldiers. They are more like ODSTs, but less hardcore. Spartans win, especially the Mk2 and Mk4 Spartans .
Weapons disparity aside, I would say the UNSC marines match the SA Marines. SA Marines have decidedly better weapons.
+DocWolph Considering how hard it is to become an N1, N7s must be pretty fucking hardcore. After all, most actual, real-life operators will tell you that it's harder to stay in special operations than it is to get into special operations.
Also, what kind of weapons technology do the humans of Halo have? Gunpowder? Railgun? Something else? I know it's ballistic and not energy, -because energy weapons are stupid as fuck and that's probably something Halo and Mass Effect fans will agree on- but do you know the exact science of them?
In Mass Effect, the weapons are handheld railguns that fire metal shavings the size of a grain of sand. A UA-cam Channel called Nerdist with a show called "Because Science" did a video on Mass Effect weapons, and determined that a shot from this would travel at about 86km/s (For comparsion, an M16 rifle, which has a very high muzzle velocity by today's standards, has a muzzle velocity of .96km/s using mid-2000s ammunition.) This kind of weapon would, in reality, be optimal for penetrating hard objects because of the projectile's extremely small surface area (less resistance) and very high speeds.
Oh, and some N7s can literally manipulate gravity with their minds. There are biotics scattered throughout the alliance military, though I would guess that most of them are recommended for special forces qualification course rather than left in the infantry.

However I would address the fact we've seen so far very large empty spaces between the buildings on the surface and within the underground as well.
Given the unconceivable size of the infrastructures needed to ensure energy and water distribution, we might assume as well that each underground level is separated by giant distribution hubs with no homes whatsoever.
Furthermore, we have to look at the power plants, atmospheric control centers and facilities. And so on. That being said, we can assume that the upper levels are also the ones with the more wealth, and the more space for each person too.
It is almost like each layer of Coruscant represents a social class self contained in its own level, besides its working place.

Isaac Arthur's channel covered planet cities. Earth could fit quadrillions of people before heat became a serious problem, for example. And heat is the real limiting factor if you have cheap abundant power and droid labor.
He actually said you could fit 10 trillion people on a planet before heat was a major concern. If you're going into the quadrillion number. you would have to find away to deal with heat, biological/mechanical waste (solid, liquid, and gaseous), air pressure, and building/people weight. If you find a way to deal with those factors, you could build all the way to/past an earth-like planet's atmosphere which could hold a population of 383 quadrillion+ souls in Isaac Arthur's words. Almost 4x the number of the sentient population in Star Wars, which is 100 quadrillion.
And that number doesn't factor building down down or orbital living spaces.
Ooo logistics, statistics, economics and fluff in fictional settings get me all hot and bothered.

I love this topic and your video! I've calculated a bit my self on a realistic coruscant population and found that it all comes down to what a level is. A coruscant level is never defined anywhere to my knowledge (and coruscant has a bit over 5000 of them, dont remember the exact number). Is a level one floor or is one level maybe ten meters or perhaps an entire city (aproximately 500-1000 meters). A few sources seem to point to the latter, star wars the clone wars and the star wars 1313 game trailer. If so it would mean that the city reaches more then half way to the planets core, putting the population at ludicrous numbers, atleast a thousand times more than what you calculated!

Were the layers taken into account here? Because if my understanding is correct, those layers would increase the surface area as they expand outward and provide a whole extra surface on top of that.
I'm not sure, but I think they were. But even with those layers, people live 'below' layers. What I mean by that, is that let's say, layer 5127 only has one surface that people live on, but layer 5126 has the 'ground' layer with all the upright buildings, and then the 'ceiling' layer with upside down buildings hanging from the roof of layer 5126, or the underside of layer 5127. So instead of 5127 surface areas, you could say that there are 10,253 surface areas. Instead of 10,254 surface areas since layer 5127 doesn't have a roof and is the last layer.

I would recommend checking him out, he talks about sci-fi concepts while putting them into reality in a very technical and in-depth way. He said in his video about ecumenopolises that the limiting factor for population wouldn't be living space, food, water, or energy, as in a society like star wars those things would be easy enough to produce. Rather, the issue you would be heat generated. People create heat, both by their bodies and by the things they use to generate food, electricity, etc. Heat can only be radiated into space so quickly, so your upper limit for the population of an ecumenopolis that's similar to earth and everyone generates the same amount of heat as an American and there aren't any special heatsinks (we don't see any so we assume there aren't) is around 3 x 10^14 people. Which, really, is less than one order of magnitude smaller than what you suggest Coruscant would be at.

thatasianguy99 is that when the Kaminoan mentioned they have x amount of "units" ready to go in AOTC? I think it was explained somewhere and confirmed by Pablo that a unit isn't a single trooper but rather a military unit, or a large group of troopers. So the actual number of Clones produced would still be small to protect the Galaxy but much much larger than what we perceive.
+Tyler Klein, it's confirmed through the movie that a single clone is a unit as they only refer to individual clones as units and they don't even talk about a battalion as a unit just individual clones, and the canon number for pop. of coruscant is about 1-10 trillion and it's actually pretty fair as most of the space is shops or rich people stuff, and their are 5000 levels but most people are said to only live on the top 100 as the bottom 100 are completely uninhabitable and below 100 their are monsters mutants, really bad people, and they use it as their dumping grounds.
