Always love this era of TBS, idk the name of the guy who did the voiceover for the promos but he was good. Surprised there was no WCW wrestling promos mixed in this block as they would always be heavy in rotation during prime time.

The voiceover was John Young; he also was the voiceover artist for a number of television and radio stations all over the United States (around the Raleigh-Durham area, he did some work for WRAL-TV 5 and WNCN-TV 17)…

It isn't a marathon without some holiday ads every year from TBS, these always hit differently than other networks did during this time! Plus the TBYES promo! Too bad it's nothing like that anymore. As Mr. Wayne said, "That'll be the day!"

Was a crazy yet wonderful time. The Wall had come down a month earlier, there were revolutions taking place all over Eastern Europe, and the US invaded Panama. I was 18 and a senior in high school.

11:30 I don't know what it was able the Fry Daddy, but fries that came out of that were always perfection. I remember my babysitter had one, and I wished I could have one

1:05 - Didn’t one of The Hangover movies remake this gag, only with a real giraffe?

Michelin- I can see that the movie, “Look Who’s Talking” had a good amount of influence on this commercial. Also, I always thought that the Michelin mascot looked like a relative of the Stay Puff marshmallow man from “Ghostbusters “.
Presto FryDaddy Deep Fryer- The fryer featured in this commercial looks so cheap, that, it looks like it could be a toy, like an Easy-Bake Oven.
Butter- Personally, whenever I eat English Muffins, I eat the topping (butter, jelly, etc.) first, and the English muffin last, the opposite of what the man does in this commercial.

16:18 Funny how Wilt Chamberlain is more notorious today for the things he did while *not* wearing his BVDs.

He was pretty well known for being a womanizer back then too. That was further cemented after his 1992 book "A View from Above" where he claimed he had slept with 20,000 women.

Most colorized movies look wrong, but Casablanca just looks like a crime against humanity.

Colorizing Casablanca is like using a sharpie marker to “touch up” the Mona Lisa.

I'm sure that colorization tech will improve exponentially with current machine learning/AI processes, but movies like Casablanca are just supposed to be seen in black and white.
Ted Turner has been an important force in film preservation, but his obsession with colorization in the 80's will always be a black mark on that legacy.

Yeah, colorizing old black and white movies was a big craze around that time. I hated it. Perfect way to ruin a classic.

Always was a remake of A Guy Named Joe, which Spielberg had wanted to do for years. The movie would end up being a disappointment both critically and financially, and the last time Spielberg and Dreyfuss worked together. John Goodman was in it, and apparently this led to him being cast as Fred Flintstone in the live action film that Spielberg was developing at the time.

Reminds me of Quentin Tarantino and Jackie Brown. It was a passion project he wanted to do that didn't really do well but was a fine film, just something the audience didn't want to see from them I guess 🤷‍♂️

For some DIPSH*T reason, I could’ve sworn that the woman in that IRON cologne commercial at 4:27 was Shannon Doherty! I guess I was a kid at the time, and I have viewed things so differently than other people. One thing is certain though, that is not Shannon Doherty!

That’s ok. When I was a kid I thought I saw Nancy Kerrigan in a cascade commercial. 😹
