- How to Repair a Vacuum Cleaner Roller Brush that Won't Spin and a Belt That is Smoking.
In this video you will learn how to disassemble and repair a vacuum cleaner that has the common problem of needing a belt changed and/or a roller brush that is not spinning. I highly recommend that you order a new roller brush if yours is froze up...but in the video you will learn how you can repair that roller brush and oil the bearings for further use.
You will learn how to change your drive belt and how to change or repair the roller brush on your vacuum.
This is all quite simple and most anyone can do this and you will save time and money by not having to take it to a repair shop.

Woo hoo! My Bissell 2846 brush was not turning. I took it apart and the belt was broken. I bought a new belt but realized that the brush was not spinning at ALL. By watching how you removed the ends I pried mine apart noting that the plastic was clearly melted. I carefully used a utility knife to chip away what was melted, reassembled everything and VOILA! Working once again! Replacing the entire vacuum with an equivalent model would be close to $300 and this repair was only $6.50 for a pack of two new belts. Thanks!!!
Thank you so much!!
....u saved me from thinking about getting another right now lol
THANK YOU!!! I've been trying to fix my vacuum for 2 hours. Watched this video, fixed it in 2 minutes. Thank You!!!!!
Glad it helped!
Hoover tips: The plastic ends unscrew, so don't try to pry them off. Just hold both ends and twist them in opposite directions.
Also check that the carpet height adjuster hasn't accidentally gotten set to a low carpet height when you're running on a medium or high pile. Running the carpet height adjuster too low will put too much strain on the brush and will cause the belt to slip (and overheat).
Thanks for the Info I popped those caps off the brush & hair was everywhere!! Now I’m in “Full Rotation” 😂👍
Way to go
Just tried your method and it worked perfectly! Thank you so much!
Glad it helped!
This was very helpful. I had a feeling my brush had bearings and were seized, luckily my vacuum is just like this and I was able to fix it using this method. Thanks!
In under two minutes I learned how to use the attachments only, without the brush bar 👍
lol
LOL, Before I even finish the video, HAIR. That stuff can stop a Traine (A/C unit).
***After video update*** Grease or oil will collect dust and gunk in the bearing area. WD40 has no lubrication value once it dries. If you can get some Teflon (or Cerflon) dry lube spray, that would help and not collect dust. Or even better, a drop of a dry bicycle chain lube (White Lightening at Walmart or similar) is easier to control. Works well on lawn mower cables, too, and a small bottle can last several years. I've gotten to where I don't put anything on these brush bars, just let 'er ride.
My wife has started repairing these vacuums (with a little help and training from me). People just throw them out. She joked last week that she made more money doing this than with her Mary Kay thing.
Good video, thanks for posting!
Thank you! The roller brush for my Eureka is no longer available, so this was a real rescue!
I can't get my belt compartment to open and I cannot remove my brush there are no screws holds or screws. I have a euraka model4471
That worked like a charm! Many thanks!
Nice job on this video good help
Good to hear
Thankk yooouuuu
Thank you so very much. This also helped with my shampooer as well.
Great informative video! DYI video helps save money and TIME during these challenging economic times.😊
Thank you, thank you! I was so discouraged but my vacuum cleaner is working again because of your video!
Wonderful!
So i was cleaning my room and my vacuum was smoking and i was so scared my parents were gonna yell at me then i found this video and it really helped🤩

God bless you and encourage you along life’s way!…
@@helpinguonline thank you i hope your channel grows to greatness!
Thank you for showing this video.
Thanks a million!
Beware! Removing the ends may break the ABS/plastic part that cap/cover the metal shaft on some models. It happened to me and ruined my roller brush. In Niagara Falls, CA, the roller now cost more than the whole vacuum cleaner I paid almost a decade ago.
Please be more gentle and patient when remove the plastic ends. They tend to build hairs and may ruin the belt and even stop rolling. Good luck all!
Thank you very much.😊 I just fixed the roller brush on my Bissell 1797 because tons of string was wrapped around the right end. I accidentally broke off a piece of it trying to pry it apart but I got it back together. Any easier way to get the ends off? I couldn't pull it apart to see the rod inside. Help...
Thanks! My Hoover FH51000 dual brushes cost $120+. Which means you just save me $$$!
Thank you so much!! This worked! Now we don’t have to buy a new vacuum 😂
Way to go!
Awesome vacuum! I love it!
Thanks. Amazing
Yes! You are the man!
Thank you! So helpful
Glad it was helpful!
I have a Kenmore intuition with the swiveling head and the roller stops so I removed everything to access the brush roller and found two wires that were almost cut in half because of how they routed it underneath the motor. I don't have a problem with a belt it's definitely a sensor or the wires. I'm going to fix the damage wires to the switch but I'm trying to figure out how the sensor works to know when to stop the roller like it's designed to. I will start by replacing the two wires to the switch and I'm going to just connect them together to try and bypass the sensor. This vacuum was a horrible design and I can't believe they routed wires in a spot that takes constant force.
Thank you so much!
Thank you much. This helps .
👍👍👍you at a jukebox hero in my book.
Thanks!
Welcome!
Just what the doctor ordered, thanks
Another great informative video. Thanks👍
On a different topic, what do you think of a Stihl 026 survival that sat for 24 hrs in a basement flood. Local shop blew it off as trashed. Your thoughts please?
I would take it apart and clean it up (make sure everything is dry) put 2 cycle oil on the parts as I reassemble and fire it up. Drain the fuel tank... take the plug out and remove the air filter and pull the rope till all drained out... maybe spray WD-40 in the cylinder and carb (WD-40 absorbs water)... pull the starter with the plug out... may need to clean up the coil and flywheel (WD-40 may take care of that too) then put fresh fuel with proper 2 cycle mix in it and it will probably fire up. At least worth a try.
I went to a beach house that was flooded with salt water in a hurricane. Helped the owners out with their mower, pressure washer, etc and did what I described above and everything is running fine even 3 years later.
Lot of overheating going on with that roller, I don't think you found the problem. Maybe that bearing was froze?
One end of my roller is out of kilter. Wasn't sure if the end cap could be removed, but clearly it can. May end up being an epoxy fix, but will keep using the same roller until one of us dies.
I clean my cap ends every six months. Several pets and girls with long hair. The pet hair isn't as bad as the girls.
You did great...I have a Bissell POWER force helix turbo can I do that same way
Thanks. The reason I did that was because a new roller brush was not available for that vacuum. The best option is to buy a new roller brush but if they are too expensive or not available it is worth a try.
I can't seem to pry off the ends of my roller. Any advice?
Depending on the design the end may be glued?. I could not get a replacement for the vacuum in the video but you may be able to get a replacement brush for yours.
@@helpinguonline Thanks. I actually figured it out! You just need to use a screwdriver head and hit that with a hammer in order to get the middle metal piece out. It took a while because it was rusted, but it came out eventually.
I was able to use a thin blade to clean and lift up end to free up roller. Thks
Way to go!
My belt keeps slipping off the motor
Do the ends come off any my goblin pet vacuum snapped the belt although the roller isn't really stuck
Thank you
I own a Powerlifter rewind pet. I did exactly what was done in the video but unfortunately during the process I dropped the vacuum onto the carpet from about two feet high and when I did a small rectangular piece of metal called a "vacuum rib shoe" came off. I do not know where it came off the vacuum at and can not find anywhere online to tell me where it goes.
I had a new brush & belt & it still wouldn't spin.
When you have the belt off you should be able to see if the motor shaft is spinning. If it is… Something probably simple is keeping the brush from turning. If the motor shaft does not turn you may have a burned out motor
@@helpinguonline i realized the part the belt hooks onto isn't spinning. Time for a new one? I never knew I could remove the belt & use just the attachment which is good enough for right now so thanks for the tip! And thanks for responding.
Mine too is smoking and making noise loud it’s Hoover steam vac. I it’s not Bissel
Is this the same problem
That can be fix sir
My daughter put the hose into where the extension wand goes and I can't get it out
Sorry but WD40 will not last because its a solvent not a lubricant. Another poo poo, non properly prepared youtube video
Yeah, he said in the video it would be best not to use WD40 but a silicone lubricant instead. He just didn't have any and said it was a short-term solution based on what he had.
