    I'm starting to think that the Russell family is going to end my chasing career. WT offers pretty much everything I love about American whiskey.

    Rare Breed is so good especially for the price point... I could see that winning over others that go for double the price... a real gem, and it’s relatively easy to find.

    I’m really impressed by Rare Breed, the nose and palate is amazing, the higher proof is spot on, looking forward to trying the Single Barrel next.🥃

    I know most of these are older videos but I'm coming late to the party as usual lol. I've been binge watching your channel and I wish I would have found it sooner. Great information and knowledge. You're gonna get me to try some borbouns that I definitely would've passed up before. I only have a small collection but with reviews like this the collection is surely going to grow. 💯😎

    For about the last two years now my wife and I have been exploring bourbons. Whiskey has always been our go to liquor for cocktails. But now we are exploring bourbon and whiskey on its own. This particular video finally got me to pull the trigger on a bottle of Russell’s Reserve 10 year. We were both blown away by how delicious it was. The creaminess, the way it lingered on our pallet we loved it! When it comes to Bourbon videos yours are always my favorite. You seem to be very knowledgeable and I love the information I get. I do watch other peoples videos but I do like yours the best. Your videos have introduced me to wild Turkey 101, and Four Roses single barrel and small batch. I very much enjoyed all three of these. I have also found on my own Woodinville finished in Port casks and Three Chord finished in Pinot Noir casks. I loved both of those. My wife and I are very much enjoying our bourbon journey and want to take a trip from our home in West Michigan down to Kentucky to enjoy the bourbon trail. Thank you for helping us along on our journey. Cheers 🥃🥃

      Appreciate that Steve. Glad I can help you and your wife explore some more bourbons. There are so many out there it can be intimidating. But there are also so many to explore that are available as well that you don't have to chase. If you have any questions please let me know. Cheers!

    I have been fooled by Russel's products many times when blind tasting or just having a pour from a friend/family member and not yet knowing what it is. it drinks like something so much more expensive and has the, complexity, delicate nose, mouth coating delectable palate, along with a good warm and long finish every time no matter what product. They really are turning out to be my favorite distiller when it comes to bourbon! great video buddy, cheers!

      Then consider Bookers is £75 to rarebreed £50 my way. This batch isn’t much behind Bookers considering price it’s a no brainer.

    • @williambedard4375
      @williambedard4375 5 років тому +3

      Really sad bookers has gone to 6 years from 12 but price has increased I love beam but bookers has gone down substantially and legent was hugh disappointment. Sip awhile and Kathleen's were outstanding but still not what the 12 was and some like shiny barrel are flat out awful in my opinion. Distillers cut was outstanding non chill filter 5 to 6 years old and 21.99, bakers small batch has been discontinued and is better than most bookers releases as well.

    After watching this episode back in October, it got the wheels turning in my head. I didn't believe that i agreed with you. I always thought i liked rare breed better than RR single barrel. So i bought a bottle of RR and did a blind shootout last night with 2 friends. We all picked the RR over the RB. They are both awesome pours but the RR had just a little bit extra. Thanks for this review and eye opening experience.

    • @TheMashandDrum
      @TheMashandDrum  6 років тому +4

      Yes Carl. It's the same reason why I did this side by side. Someone told that to me and I swore by RB. But RR does have a bit extra layer of flavor that puts it over the edge. Glad you and your buddies did this. Love hearing about others experiences. Cheers!

    Love Jason's reviews, who got me started on the OF 1910 and 1920 ,which are fantastic, and was on that bandwagon for ~ two years. Then he got me to try the Rare Breed, and I was blown away, as it ticked so many boxes of what I like. Just got a bottle of Russel's Reserve for Christmas, and haven't uncorked it, as I'm waiting for a friend, who is in love with the RR 10 by the way, to do a blind with me.

    I’ve been a rare breed lover for a couple years but recently I’ve been preferring the Russell’s Single barrel. The rare breed is more vanilla but has a little tobacco type flavor that sometimes I’m not in the mood for. The Russell’s has less vanilla but more of a rich candied fruit vibe that I have been really into lately. I’m leaning towards russels but both are some of the best alcohol on the planet hands down. When you sip either of these (I can see it on your face for both of them lol). It’s a satisfying sip that takes you to a special place 😍😍😍

    Nice video, thanks. I have to admit, I felt a bit different. I love Rare Breed, especially the current version, and I had two or three bottles of it over the past years (and a couple more in stock luckily). Today I received my first bottle of Russel's SB, and of course, I coudn't wait to compare it to the Rare Breed. So I poured both, gave them a quarter of an hour, and ..., I get only minor differences in the nose and taste. The Russel is a different bottle than the one you show (quite clean bottle with just a small vertical label 3x10 cm), maybe the follow up, as the video is more than one year old.
    The Russels SB is a fantastic Bourbon, but in Germany, it is double the price of the Rare Breed (shy 30 to 50+). So I think the latter stays my value for money MVP by far.
    Cheers!

    It was a progression for me, went from 101 to Rare Breed & my go to now is Russell’s Reserve SB, the flavours are just so much more rounded off & definitely doesn’t drink like 110 Proof. But if I want a good Kentucky hug, I still go back to my Rare Breed.

    • @TheMashandDrum

    Getting good bourbon in Canada (Ontario, specifically) is a challenge, but the good news is that Rare Breed is available here. Sadly, there is no RR in Ontario, though some other provinces get the 90-proof 10-year and some single-barrel store picks on occasion. I had one of those single-barrel picks and it was brilliant. Did a blind head-to-head vs. the Rare Breed and had a very hard time picking a winner. Went with the RR, but considering the availability of the Rare Breed, I'm thrilled to have it on my shelf.

    • @TheMashandDrum

      Took about 2 years for me of trying alot of different bourbon. Flavors start becoming fairly consistent in bourbons.. vanilla, oak, caramel...once you start training your brain you can start picking up more unique flavors and even pick out mash bills to some extent. But I couldn't start this channel until I felt I was ready. Cheers.

      You are talking my language. B519 got me hooked on ECBP and 1920 a favorite as well. Just tried Old Forester single barrel (Total Wine) barrel pick and love it too. Agree with the reviews that it is along the line of the 1920 profile. Coincidentally having a pour of a Russell's Reserve private barrel pick (Total Wine) and very much enjoying it too while watching this. I tried the regular Russell's Reserve and could take or leave it, but this is different story... I think may need a backup bottle :)

    I really enjoy your channel. I learn a lot about flavor profile listening to you, as I find my palate is very similar. These are definitely two of my favorite bottles and always have a place next to WT101, which is a daily sipper for me. The 2019 Rare Breed is crazy good and very smooth. I actually like it better than 2017 and 2018. The price points for both RB a RR SiB is more than fair, while pricing of Kentucky Spirit is a head scratcher - it’is the big reason I never buy it.

    The Russell is honestly one if the best bourbons I have ever had. For they price it is the best IMO.

    Great video! I have both and I like one more than the other and it's not even close. Very interested to hear your opinion. Thank you.

    The RR needs a few days to breathe, and THEN becomes a very good bourbon. The WT rare is good from cork pop to finish. Rare breed for me any day.

    Wild turkey they have such solid bourbon, to me they are the most consistent brand, I never had a bad pour, my go to is the 101 but if you want something little bit more complex the rare breed and Russell reserve are so nice.

    Great review! We just picked up our first bottle of Russell’s Reserve, and was a private barrel select from Total Wine... Holy moly is it delicious! My wife and I instantly loved it.
    Is it just me, or does the Russell’s Reserve have some Buffalo Trace characteristics?? Seemed like a mix between Eagle Rare and Four Roses. Amazing stuff. Thanks for the great video! 🥃

    I love these both, but if I HAD to choose, I would pick the Russel's. That said, I have really been enjoying my bottle of rare breed that I just kicked tonight with the last bit going into my infinity bottle.

    I have what some may consider a stupid question to ask. I am also an Ohio native, I know that russels reserve 13 is coming out or came out maybe, do you have any idea where we could begin looking to acquire one?

    Russell's Reserve is definitely my pick between the two, but after your review i might have to go back and check the Rare Breed again. I think I will have to do a blind tasting between the two now.

      I think the latest Rarebreed is closer to the turkey profile. It’s still got spice and big kick but sooo goood.

    Rare Breed by a nose! Sweet, complex, with a long, viscous finish.

    Thanks for the review Jason! I’m drinking Kentucky Spirit as I watched this vid! I have an open store pick of Russell’s Reserve single barrel and an unopened bottle of Rare Breed. Love Wild Turkey whiskey, sounds like I gotta crack the Rare Breed very soon! I opened the KS and RR at the same time, at first the KS had better balance but now the RR has opened up for the win! Cheers! 🥃👍
