WARNING!!! Read and follow the instructions that came with your fireplace, because if you do not follow the instructions exactly, a fire or explosion may result, your house could blow up and you could die. [I'm not being overdramatic by the way] Do not go by what I say. It is only to familiarise you with how residential gas fireplaces work.

A. This appliance has a pilot that must be lit manually. When lighting the pilot, follow these instructions exactly.
B. BEFORE LIGHTING, smell around the appliance area for gas. Be sure to smell next to the floor because some gas is heavier than air and will settle on the floor.
WHAT TO DO IF YOU SMELL GAS:
Do not try to light any appliance.
Do not touch any electric switch, do not use any phone in your building.
Immediately call your gas supplier from a neighbor's phone. Follow the gas supplier's instructions.
If you cannot reach your gas supplier, call the fire department.
C. Use only your hand to push in or turn the gas control knob. Never use tools. If the knob will not push in or turn by hand, don't try to repair it, call a qualified service technician. Force or attempted repair may result in a fire or explosion.

Thanks for the 4th year in a row.
Hilarious
Hahahahahaha that’s awesome!
Hahahha same here!!
Fender or Gibson?
Lmao
Please don't ever take this down. Since 2016 I have looked this up every spring and fall to turn on and off and would be lost without it. Thank you so much!
Same here!
agreed!
Indeed. Just to be sure, I watch this video twice a year.
God bless you! My husband always handled these things and tonight you helped an old widow out! In July 2023 when my husband was on hospice for cancer, we turned off the pilot light because it was making the living room too warm. I have kept it off until now, but we are expecting a storm and could lose power anytime. So at 3 a.m. I decided I better not freeze when I heard it was 15 degrees outside. You saved me! Thanks so much! Me and my new kitten are snuggly warm now! ❤ My husband would thank you too!😊
This is beautiful to stumble upon ❤❤❤
This is easily the most valuable video on UA-cam for me personally. Once a year I am asked to turn on the pilot light at my parents house and each year this saves me from looking incompetent
As a first-time homebuyer, I was a bit lost when it came to using my fireplace, and my realtor didn't have the details from the seller. Instead, I was given a chimney specialist's contact and told it could cost around $100 for assistance. Thankfully, I stumbled upon your video and, by following your instructions, managed to light the fireplace with ease! Thank you so much for sharing that video. Fireplaces indeed warm homes, but it’s your kindness that warms our hearts!
Thank you for showing me how to do this. My husband recently passed away unexpectedly and I’m left to do all the things he did. We’re having a blizzard right now so having the fireplace going gives me piece of mind. Thank you!
I'm so sorry for your loss. I was widowed once. The first two years were the toughest to get through. Learning how to take care of everything alone and in mourning is really tough. Thank goodness for the folks who take the time to create these tutorials. A little help goes a long way.
My dad died unexpectedly when I was 10. I remember my mom and I being baffled by lighting the pilot on our fire place. It is one of the standout moments in my mind of us healing. This was in the days before UA-cam so we just had to trial and error our way through it. Every fall when we would light the pilot, we would reflect on how far we'd come . Since I moved out of my mom's house it has been a few years since I've had to light a pilot. This year my wife and I have a house with a gas fireplace and I needed a refresher. Your comment reminded me of the silent ritual my mom and I would have together each fall lighting the pilot. I hope you find solace and healing. More than 17 years later my mom and I still think about my dad, but have been able to build new lives for ourselves. I sincerely hope you are able to do the same. Keep the memories alive, heal, and move on.
@@nooranik21 I love your comment so much. It tells a story of love, loss, healing, moving forward, memories & never forgetting those who have gone before us.

Year after year I always come to this video just to make sure I'm doing it right. Thank you very much for sharing this video with us.
This is the ONLY video needed to understand how to light that pilot light. Thanks so much and enjoying my ventless fireplace!
Thank you! I've called my husband for him to go over again on how to light the fireplace.(I've never used a gas fireplace he has shown me a few times but it scares me and it's made all that much worse when he starts yelling.. your video is the first one I came across and it worked just like u said ..I left it alone for 5 mins and then on 3 click came on perfect. Thank you for the step by step. Your my new UA-cam husband..
First time visitor. You saved me from FREEZING. I moved into a Rental that has this brand of Fireplace. It's Dark and Windy and the Electric Heater can't keep up with the chilly weather like I thought it might. Less than 4 MINUTES Later and I have a Safe, Toasty Fire. THANK YOU For The Demo and ALL THE BEST To You, Your Loved Ones. and Those Reading This! - Leilani
I have used your instructions at least three times over the years and it has been so helpful! I have the original instructions but after so long they have become partially obscured and unusable. Thank you so much for your video! It's so easy! Thanks to you.
I often watch my own videos over again as well. It's hard to remember all this stuff when you only do it once a year! Glad to be of help.

Thank you so much for this! We have had our home for three years now and just finally built up the courage to use the fireplace. I'm excited to now be part of the "check this video once a year" crew. ❤
This video worked! You helped me solve my problem! Husband was useless, he’s not handy. HVAC guy said, probably needed a new system. Handyman said $165, just to come out. Now, I know how to turn it off, and turn it on, and good to know about the gas valve. Maybe that’s why our bills were always so high, bleeding gas! A very big thank you, stay safe!
Surely your husband is useful in some ways... remember, it's a team effort!
@@Kybone Ya that was a savage comment 🤣 My husband isn't handy but he works his butt off and I am handy but stay home with the kids. Team effort is right!
Maybe not helpful to call your husband "useless".
Three months after the pilot light had gone out I had given up trying to get a tech to come to the house.. Then I found your video. Worked like a charm! Much obliged!
I've lived in my house for 3 years and have had to reference this video once a year, every year so far to remember how to start my fireplace.
8 years for me
is it expensive to run this type of fireplace?
I've always been TERRRIFIED of gas anything and lighting it (even when someone lights a bbq- I take cover JUST IN CASE) But now I'm on my own- and need to do it myself and found this video ages ago. Took the plunge (fully expecting to go up in flames/explosions) but he does it so easily and instructs perfectly. Thank you for I do believe what is the 4th time!
Adam, Thank you for posting a very clear (quality) video with easy to follow instructions. I like the fact that you left the WARNING notes up for the entire video. Great job !!

Thanks so much! Last Winter we had to have an expert come into our house and show us how to light the pilot. It went out again tonight and we couldn't remember what the guy showed us. Your video is great! Even though my fireplace is slightly different.
Thank you for the great video. Ever since we install the central air conditioner pilot light of the fireplace was off. I saw your video and follow the simple steps and my fireplace is working great. Thanks for saving me $150 for the simple diagnostic.
So I have asked my husband for about 2 years now to figure out how to do this. Well, after your 3 minute video and 1 minute following your directions, I did it!!! I feel so proud of myself. Thx!!!!
I have never lit a fireplace, before today. Thank you for your instructions. The only thing in the video it did not show was the switch on the wall. It took me about ten minutes to figure it out that when you said flip the switch that is what you meant. Now I know. Thanks again:)
Perfect. Was struggling to turn on the fireplace at our new place. Watched this video and Got it started. Thank you so much.
Thank you! We just moved into a house with a gas fireplace, and I couldn't figure out how to light it, but now, thanks to you, it's lit, and we're enjoying a lovely fire.
I recently purchased a home and was having difficulty lighting the fireplace in my basement until I ran across your awesome video. Thank you so much!!
I would like to say thank you for this video. My mother-in-law just recently became a widow. I was at her house when she asked me to help her turn her fire plcace on because of your video we were able to do it. Thank you so much for the visual step by step!! You truly helped 2 women in distress👭
I have used this video for the last 4 years since I bought my house and I am the only one that lights the fireplace up every year …Lol everyone else avoids it! Thanks for making it easy for me to understand❤
this is great. i have the same one. mine is from 2003 and its never been used once since the house was built. i had to get an LP converter kit since it was designed for natural gas, and a new gas line in my crawl space because the people that built the house never installed one. i just got the line installed today and waiting for the gas company to turn on the propane tomorrow. this video is helpful since i can be sure i always operate it correctly.
Just bought my first house and man did this help me. Looks like this was video was posted 7 years ago and it's still helping folks. Bravo!!! 👍👏👏👏
Well, we're all back, huh?
Thanks for the video and info. Just what I needed to light the fireplace pilot light this fall. Helps to kind of take a high level approach and provide simple specific info on what needs to happen. Much clearer than the instructions that come with the fireplace. Thanks ~
Thanks, first time in 20 yrs the pilot went out on our Gas Fire Place Stove....first thing I did was call the repairman, had to leave a message with their answering service, I thought the Fire Place had a larger issue. The Fire Place was over 20 yrs old, had to to be something big, right? Then while I was waiting for the call back from the technician, I went to UA-cam, found your video, in 6 mins, pilot was lit, I adjusted the flame a little bit and working fine.....very simple thing but if you don't do something for long while sometimes you forget. Thanks again!! Happy New Year!!
I just watched this because I could not light my pilot! Guess what? It worked using your direction!!!! YEAH THANK YOU!!
Awesome! Glad to hear that!
thanks for the help
calm yourself, anna
Anna Davis mine won’t stay lit when I let go of the pilot
This is the best video...I have been constantly refering to it every fall on how to safely light the gas fireplace!
THANK YOU! I DID IT! I have a gas fireplace with no instructions this was easy to follow and it helped to know what to look out for. 🖒✊
Thank you thank you thank you! Been living in my house for 2 years and this is the first Christmas I've had the courage to light the fireplace!
Thank you so much!
My fireplace always works over 10 years, but just lately it has been suddenly off few times. I don't know why, what could cost the happen? I have learned from you on youtube and turn it on every time.
I just moved into a rental. I struggled with igniting the pilot light for several minutes, then watched this video. There is now a fire in the fireplace. Thank you so much!
Rather important error: the shutoff valve should be parallel to the pipe to turn the gas Oon, NOT perpendicular to it. Perpendicular is OFF.
Glad someone clarified that!
He actually switched it to parallel but said perpendicularl may be it's just slip of tongue 👅😛
He literally says he meant parallel on the upper left corner of the screen lol
Thank you!!!
I just commented this earlier, didn’t see you had. Thanks. Had to make sure I wasn’t trippin
I JUST lit my own pilot light 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉😁 Thank you so much for taking the time to empower others and save money. I appreciate you!
Video is money, thank you. I’m a total neophyte when it comes to this stuff, it worked and my wife was like, “you’re the man, Babe.” Popin my collar
Lol you're the man
Lmao... Just make sure u clear your UA-cam search history. Or you'll be BUSTEDDDDD and that collar of yours will droop! Lol
Every year I feel like “i must be doing something wrong!!!” I come on, find this same video and then I hear you say “if it’s been off for a long time you may have to hit the striker a few more times” and I’m like ohhhhhh that’s right!!
Thanks again!
Thank you, the video was simple, and easy to understand. Was able to light my pilot light with no problems.
Great video, thank you. Have the exact same fireplace. Read the instructions, wasn’t exactly sure if I understood correctly. Video was clear and help to fill in the holes.
I'M TO SCARED CUZ OF THAT INTRO
SAME
I wasn't, We are on the market for a new house anyways 😆
Like damn I’ll just be cold 😂😂
@@FirstUPdaGREAT 😂😂😂😂
For 7 years running I've watched this video twice a year. Be safe not sorry. Thanks Adam.
Thank you so much! We read the instructions, but had no clue where to see the pilot light. So watching your video helped to know where to look. i think there's more logs in ours, because it was really hard to see! but, there it was! So thanks a lot.
5 years in a row for me! Thank you for posting this video! 🙏🏼
Every year around late October or early November, I'm here to figure out how to get the pilot lit.
I'm here right nowwww freezing and gathering my courage. 😂😅
9 years later and your video still helps, i had an idea on how to start one since growing up, at my parents house was a wood burning fireplace, now im dealing with a gas one and your video help me get pass on getting the actual flames lol getting the pilot lit was easy, then i was stomped after that lol..
I've lived in my house for almost 3 years and I thought it was broken 😤😰. It works 😉 Thanks to this video
2 years and I think mine is broken. But I am gonna try it. Wish me luck
UA-cam humanity at its worst and best. This is us at our best. Thanks brother!
I really appreciate your making this video. You've given me courage to do it myself by breaking it down into simple steps. Fingers crossed! :-)
Thank you Adam for the video!) Tricky was to keep pushing ignition about 30 times before pilot was on. But trickiest was "flip the switch" on 2:45! WHAT SWITCH? Finally I figured it out - it was in line with other two standard light switches close to the fireplace.
Just bought my first house. I'm afraid to start the fireplace because of the intro lol. We have no manual btw
Same and we don't have a shut off
@@blahblahblah1230 You sure? Its probably in the basement. The shut off.
Thank you so much! I was taught how to do this once when i first moved in months ago so naturally ive forgotten and the instructions have completely faded away and arent legible. This helped me finally get it on! I got nervous about carbon monoxide posioning so i only had it on for 10 minutes but once i can confirm the flue is open i cant wait!
Here I am for my yearly December watch of this video 😂
Simple to the point, no annoying music.
You save my life everyyyyy year 😂🥂
I’ve got a playlist called “pilot fireplace tutorial” and this is the only video I have in it. Watch it every October… thank you again.
After I turn it on and want to keep it on for the winter, do I turn it to pilot or on and off every time I use it?
tony jozepovic leave it in the on position. Once cold weather is here, leave the pilot light on, and then just use the hi lo knob
Thanks for this video, I come back to it every time I need to do the pilot light on mine cause by the time I need to light it I've forgotten how. Ur a true gem.
Thank god I watched this first before I went messing with all the knobs 😂
bruh, thank you. I was about to cry since I didn’t know how to turn it on 😭
at 2:45, you just" flipped this switch"...what switch is it, and what does that switch do???
It's the on and off light switch for the fireplace
@@Brwnsug84 how do I connect a switch? I have to take the front off and light the pilot everytime I want heat .. can I attach a thermostat and/or a switch?
@@barryfinnegan5718 I don't know how to connect a switch. My fireplace came with one on the side of it
Thanks, watching this save me a bunch of time. I didn’t know about pressing and holding the pilot button!
Lots of people overlook that the first time they do this. Youre not alone.
We leave ours on anyway, only relight it once in a blue moon if it goes out.
My fireplace is LITTTTTTTT 🔥🔥🔥.... thank you
😂😂😂
Love your simple and direct directions. Wife and I are nice and warm. Good Job!!
Back again! Years in a row I think 4 or 5 now! Thank you ❤
lol I'm back here every year around this time
Instinctual Beasts LMAO me too
Gas scares the sh*t outta me
Loll same
Lol I thought it was just me. I feel less dumb now xD
Me too! LOL
Preach
Very useful. I watch this every year around Christmas time when I need to turn on my fireplace.
This is my 4th year coming here! I'm not trying to be a gas or fireplace tech, just wanting to safely light my logs. KISS (Keep IS Simple Silly) aways gets my vote! Thank you so much for simple yet safe and effective instructions!!😊
I want to see a screenshot of the statistics on this video. to see how many views it gets in the fall/winter lol.
Thanks! Worked perfect. Southeast Missouri and power just went out. Glad to have this option.
I was missing the part of the switch :v, thank you
What switch? Can you explain a bit? Thanks!
Yeah where’s the switch?!
Same here...I did everything per the instructions, but forgot about the switch on the wall LOL
@@huckrocca1996 On the wall
Thank you SO MUCH!!! My strata chooses to shut the gas off to our building during the spring/summer and early fall. I have been freezing (b/c I refuse to turn on the electric heat) Today, I JUST found out that the gas was restored a week ago (no one told me) but thank goodness! Then...I didn't know how to light my pilot light but I REALLY wanted to get it up and running as we have 'storms' coming through tonight and again on Saturday. I wanted to be sure that I was going to have some heat and light in the case of a power outage! Thank you SO VERY MUCH for a simple, easy to understand and see - how to light my fireplace. The inside is almost exactly the same as mine (with the exception of the valve lever). I will save this tutorial as I know for certain that I will be referring to it again (the instruction sheet was not very clear or easy to understand) Thank you again and take care!
This video had seen me at my worst
Thanks! I struggled with lighting my fireplace for 30 min until I saw this video. Took me five seconds to figure out what I did wrong. My mistake was having the gas on "on" before I started the electric igniter. The key is to start the electric igniter before turning on the gas.
You said "perpendicular" but I think you meant "parallel"
Yes he meant to say parallel.
I check your video every year when I turn my fireplace on or off. Thanks!
I’m back again, I really like how I was able to find this video again by simply searching through my videos I’m liked
Thank you! The gas company was just here to turn the gas to my unit on and they lit the pilot in my fireplace and left. I noticed later it was off and was a little unsure of what to do since the instructions are missing. Got it!
This video was extremely helpful! My pilot light went out during a big snow storm and you helped me get my fireplace running again !!
This video helped me through another Minnesota snow storm !
thank you so much. This was so helpful today. Mine has no instruction page, and I would not have known or had the patience, to wait and click the pilot button as much as I had to to get this going. 🙏
Thank you for doing this video. I was finally able to get the fireplace to work safely. The wife and I really appreciate it.
I have to watch this video every year to light my gas stove...thank you for posting. So easy! My electricity is flickering off and on and this Texas power grid is always iffy so needed to light it in case the electricity went out.
I can't believe I've had to come here twice in one season. I was just here a few months ago. Thanks again!!
This is a life saver, now i am warm🥳 thank you!
Saved me a service call! Thanks for taking the time to post
First year owning my home. Wasnt sure if it was working. Watched your vid and got it to turn on in 5 minutes. Thanks again!
Annual viewing of this video...helps me EVERY year!
Thank you so much Ita -6 here and I didn't want to call a friend out in this weather you are so helpful.
Thank you for your very clear presentation. I tried starting it on my own without success. I will follow your instructions and it should work just fine.
I don’t know how to thank you. My fireplace stopped working and I was really worried. The glass was why I always assumed that was the color of the glass like it was frosted. I was able to get it working perfectly and clean the glass. It looks better than when I bought the place. Thanks again
I said it the last couple years and I'm going to say it again, Thank you very much for making this video, always a great help 🍻
I'm so grateful for this video! I had zero clue how to turn on my gas fireplace and this video helped so much!
thanks so much for this. We just bought a house that has a fireplace like this and we could not figure it out how to turn it on. lucky I found this video.
My go to video every year for 3 years! Thank you!
Thank you again (3 years running) 😂. I'm always so proud when I get it going every fall.
So helpful. I watch every time I need to put my fireplace on. Thank you!
Thanks for the 2nd year. First time home owner and perfect for the winter time
