    Chris looks lovely in that top! She had to really play her way into this tournament, having lost early in Rome and Paris due to a heel spur injury, which also meant she couldn't play Eastbourne. She was very short of match practice. I didn't get to see this match at the time because I was at school, but I was able to watch the quarter final where Chris really turned it on against Sukova (winning in straight sets) and then of course that amazing semi-final match with Martina (their last great clash). Thanks so much for posting this!

    Love seeing this ! Evert was jittery and inhibited - as if she couldn’t relax enough to take a full swing. The last 2 and a half years were challenging for her . The shots were no longer there every day although she had days she played better than ever . Compare this match to the SF match against Martina in the same tournament . She almost beat Martina . I’m glad she played in these last years because she walked away from the game just shy of her 35 th bday winning all 5 of her Fed Cup matches and beating the daylights out of Seles in her last tournament win at 89 Open. Considering that Seles won her first Open just two years later that was a special 6-0, 6-2 win . One of the top 5 performances of her career.

      my comment about the 1989 Evert win against Seles was in no way a dig at Seles . Evert was 34 years old in that match and had lost a 6-4 in the third set on clay at Houston earlier in the year - a match Evert had in command , a match that Seles moon balled her and Evert just knew she had had enough trading moon balls with women half her age held no interest for her . Seles used these tactics because she was young and had not developed the strength to hit the ground shots like she did in 1991 and on . Seles was the real deal which is why I brought up her Open win in 1991. Evert had to play her best in that 89 Open , most had picked Seles to win and evert had a lot on the line . She came on the scene in 71 Open reaching the semis but BJK brought out her best so as to not lose to a 16 year old losing just 5 games . Seles lost to Evert prior to the Houston win but Seles got the chance to play Vintage Evert . Evert said herself during Seles win over Martina in Wimbledon semi when complimented by Bud Collins about her 89 Open win that Monica hits the ball much harder now and that Seles was no where near her peak when she beat her . Later when talking of Seles on Charlie Rose show in 1994 Evert states that Seles was best ever and was better than Graf before the stabbing stating that Seles had Grafs number winning at Australian . As far as her comments about Seles in her final against Graf at W , she was referring to grass court tennis which she jokingly said was a completely different game because of the surface , one she felt she never mastered saying “ I was the best runner up Wimbledon’s ever seen ( 7 times ) that Monica using two hands for both forehand and backhand limited reach on grass - speaking from experience since she had a two handed backhand along with Agassi was a hinderance on grass . She was not cutting Seles down at all . for Chris at 34 , announcing that the 89 Open was her last , after losing a first round match to Anne Minter at the Canadian Open just the week before the open , it took guts to come up with one last great performance against Seles . Seles was at that tome not the great player she was about to become in same was Evert was not at her peak at 15 when she beat Court in 1970 in North Carolina at age 15 just after court had won the grand slam . Great champions have great early wins when not at the peak yet because it’s a sign of their mental toughness , the kind that true champions have . I have nothing but awe and respect for Evert , king court , and Seles .when Evert commentates she is evaluating the player much in the same way she evaluated opponents in a match - where that player is in the present moment - she could give a cold reading about opponents and herself and did not boast or grandstand about herself or other opponents . It was a learning experience for Seles to lose to Evert in the way that she did because she did not experience another player in her career that could stay mentally in every point the way Evert did . evert may not have had the physical weapons but she had the most important weapon - her mind . It helped Seles mentally and I believe made Seles a better player in playing Chris ( Seles’s 7-6 win over Capriati in 91 Open semi was a mental victory ). I think leaving comments on videos like these are more interesting to read for those of us who want to better understand what was going on before and after these matches by those who really are fans of the game rather than criticizing some perceived bias then drawing conclusions rather than assuming that it’s being hateful . Seles did get the daylights beaten out of her just like Martina beat the day lights out of Chris in 83 & 84 ( 13 straight losses with only 3 close matches ). That’s a fact , because of these losses both Evert and Seles became better players . By pointing out my analysis then using it to add info in saying Evert was biased in her commentary in Wimbledon final of Graf vs Seles is a real stretch because Evert was not making comments based on being biased , she was making comments on what she saw happening on that court which was a lopsided match due to the surface which Seles was not used to with her grips and that she shared familiar problems because she had two handed backhand .

      That semi-final still sticks in my brain. That was a shoddy line call against Chris on that match point. I wish there was some way today's technology could be used to definitely prove Chris' shot was out. I maintain it was on the line.
      By the way, the chair umpire in this match is the same chair umpire for the Evert/Navratilova semi-final.

      I think the Wimbledon rule is that the shorts (men) and skirts (women) have to be all white, but something like no more than one third of the shirts and blouses can have color.

    She looks flat, but she is almost never flat enough to lose to someone she shouldn't. She played 18 consecutive Wimbledons on grass. She reached the semifinals 17 times. She played 4 consecutive US opens on grass. She reached the semifinals every time. She played five Australian Opens on grass. She reached the finals every time. That means Evert reached the penultimate round 26 0f 27 tries from 1971-1989, a 19 year span. In fact she was a finalist in half the grass slams she played in her career.

    • @keithsmith4780
      @keithsmith4780 Рік тому

      She made at least the semifinal in something like 40 straight grand slams, which is a record of consistency comparable to DiMaggio's hitting streak. I think it will be hard for a current player to equal because I believe the women's field is deeper now, meaning tougher opponents earlier in the draw.

    • @BTURNER1961

      @@keithsmith4780 What Evert did was reach the semis of the FIRST 34 consecutive majors she entered from 1971 US Open through the 1983 French Open, then after an early loss at the '83 Wimbledon due to an overdose of a vitamin supplement, she went on to reach the semis of another 14 consecutive majors so at that point she was 41-1 in reaching the penultimate round. She ended her career reaching 52 semifinals (54 QF's) out 56 entries. Nobody ever did that when the fields were less deep. Not Maureen Connolly, or Helen Wills Moody, or Suzanne Lenglen, or Marguarite Court, or anyone. Those are the learning years, the adolescent years, before- your- body- is- ready- to compete- with- adult- years. Each of these greats was a young girl once with at least one or two 'oops'. She did not have any until she was in her mid twenties.

      I never saw the reason for female athletes to what was clearly a purposeful attempt to act and look masculine. If they were such feminists, then why demean their sex by trying to take on the personas of men?

      Kijimuta was a dangerous player in that she was erratic. She had a tendency to blow comfortable leads (as in the Seles match), but she also came from behind to squeak out wins over both unseeded and seeded opponents. You just never knew about her on a given day.
