    Chris won the first set in their final two days later, but lost the next two. They played three grand slam finals that year. Martina won the AO and WO. Chris won the FO. All three finals went three sets. Legendary competitors.

    It was exactly one year before in W SF where all of Chris’s gym work for previous year paid off by dismantling Mandlikova. Since that time Chris played excellent tennis in 84 W final, almost won 84 Open final, beat Martina after 13 losses in jan85 , won French open 85. No one could see it but Chris had a year left in contention for number one winning French again in 86 . After this match she played her final W final going 3 sets against Martina, what happened in a year was the advent of Graf, relegating Chris to number 3. She still reached her final slam in 88 austr. Beating Martina in SF.

      It’s 2024. Any comment about Evert is in the past. Another inane comment. You never give Evert credit for the improvement in her fitness in chasing Martina’s level , it was a goal of hers whether she caught up to Martina or not. Give Evertcredit. For once.

    At 7.00 we can see Chrissie playing an (almost) one-handed backhand passing shot😱😱😱😱😅
    It's even clearer in the slow motion replay!

    Given the fact that Navratilova had such a difficult time with Garrison in the other semifinal, I thought that Evert had a chance against her in the final. Then again, Garrison was so much better on grass than was Rinaldi.

    1985 is when I think Chris played some of her best tennis. Aggressive and much more confident. It's striking how much she (and Navratilova) lost in the next couple of years in terms of speed, strength and confidence due to injury and burn out. Their 1987 and 1988 Wimbledon semi finals were a pale shadow of their 1985 final.

    She meant to say that Martina’s competition was a class higher than her opponents leading up to final.kathy didn’t give her the type of preparation for final due to her style of play being a baseliner. It would’ve helped more if Chris had faced Shriver or Sukova to practice playing against a serve and volleyer. I noticed Chris’s comments after the final Di match were word for word what she said after losing to Martina with Bud . Whether she is number one or number two either will have their day. Chris had to push herself to th3 limit for 2 years to improve to be able to give Martina a match. People forget just how much Martina was above Chris and others .

      After Wimbledon, she continued to compete well, winning the Mahwah event (US Open warm up) over Graf, but played lousy to lose 1R of the US Open. She had a strong 1986, stayed ranked in the 7-12 range, and made the French Open QF. In 1987, she fell down some stairs, fractured her thumb, and was out for a year. When she came back, she was never the same. Spent most of the rest of her career ranked outside the Top 50, and all of her career wins vs Top Ten players came in 1985-86.
      Had some success in doubles, ranked in the Top 20, and was the US Fed Cup (now BJK Cup) captain for several years.

    I’ll bet if one included all exhibition encounters with sanctioned tour encounters, Evert would lead Navratilova in their career H2H as professional players, possibly by a significant margin. Would be quite interesting if there were a way to hunt down *all* of their exhibition singles match results. It isn’t as if any professional meeting between Evert and Navrat would have escaped public notice and/or documentation at even the local news level. LexisNexis, perhaps? 🤔 Why not include exhibition results? The players were PAID to do their jobs as pros and battle each other. Yeah, I think old Prissy Chrissy would have the edge, all told.
    In any case, this certainly looked like Evert’s Wimbledon to lose, especially after playing brilliant, forceful ball to take the first set from MN in the final.
    But she took her foot off the gas in the second set and Navratilova jumped into the opening like a rabid she-bat in search of a frazzled wig to assault. Sayonara, Chrissie. Even so, Evert remained No. 1 for much of the rest of 1985. Until she came up short again in Oz. Coulda woulda shoulda been her last No. 1 year. Still, it was a watershed accomplishment: she proved she could thump Martina again, reclaimed the No. 1 computer ranking (which had seemed impossible only a year earlier), and went on to spank Navrat’s power-glutes 5 more times before retiring.

    what the heck is russell talking about? 1) a volley in singles is different then a volley used in doubles? and 2) it's very hard for a player with a two handed baseline game to junk ball another player? HUH? IT'S CALLED such things as two handed backhand slices, two handed backhand moonballs and what rinaldi WAS doing here in this match with her ONE HANDED FOREHAND chopping/slicing/dinking it occassionally? geez, it's bad enough you have no knowing oh my enberg in the booth, but with russell too?!..

    • @lenwelch2195
      @lenwelch2195 6 років тому +1

      tom schmitz what she meant to say is that it’s not Chris style to mix it up with slices. Chris surely can ( a drop shot is a severe slice ) Chris hit more topspin on her forehand in 85 French - I attribute that single addition as to why she won because it kept Martina back, off that net . Chris really didn’t have a heavy topspin on her two handed backhand. She hit it flat , mild topspin, slice. You actually need more placement with overhead or volley in doubles because you have two people covering the court.

      @@lenwelch2195 but the way russell was speaking it was as if chris NEVER or COULDN"T "mix it up"... mixing it up is more then just slicing the ball of course...and yes, i agree evert using topspin more on her forehand on every surface helped her against martina, also she purposely hit her backhand occasionally not hard, but very deep to martina's backhand to keep her back.. sometimes it looks like evert literally "guided the ball" on her backhand to martina's backhand with the follow thru to do this... yes, of course you need to have more placement and/or more deception and guile when playing doubles and volleying and hitting overheads because of the 2 people on both sides of the net, however, the actual stroke production and intent isn't THAT much of a difference and you still have to have a strategy as well.. russell spoke as if if evert just hit a volley and overhead with no intent, strategy whatsover, which of course is ridiculous....

      Cush not fair to Chris there . Yes it was obvious for 1983, but Chris played Martina well in 84 and was up a set and a break down in the second. Chris played one lousy game early in the second set , outside of that she was close to an even score in second , only two games away from winning. The 84 Open final , 85 french, 85 Wimbledon final Chris won the first set in all 3 matches. So Chris played her tough.
