Ive watched both during Covid and right now Wangan Midnight has more realism than Initial D. Akio (WM) had to work 2 part time jobs go to school and still worked in his car late at night and managed to still progress with help. Unlike Initial D, it has a lot of plot armor. Best example being Takumi vs God Hand. When Takumi straight up broke his car, somehow god hand had to throw up and lost. I think maybe that’s why i appreciate Wangan, We all strive for our desires with sacrifice.
The lack of plot Armor is one of my favourite parts of the show
every body hates takumi winning against the S2000. If it had lost there we could have seen charachter development of takumi, have more of his psychology behind the wheel ecc.
Fourth stage gave us quite a few warning lights and Shigeno fully dropped the ball with 5th/Final stage and MF Ghost.
The whole premise of WM was to showcase the danger of feeding into your addiction and the consequences that comes with it. In this everyday life, we are all constantly tempted by things that may seem harmless at first but will eventually destroy us in the long run. Watch That Automotive Blog's review on the anime as he makes some pretty good points about this series and why it's deeper than just a racing anime. Initial D is cool and all but it never really talks about consequences. The reason people favor ID over WM is because well children see flashy things and they go nuts lol while those who has been a victim of their addiction would learn to appreciate WM's storytelling more.
Big disagree. Initial D goes really deep on techniques and strategy, and also the differences between cars and how they handle technical courses.
This is how I’ve always seen it. Initial D is the “How?” With its charm and great soundtrack that make it easier to understand. You’ll still have to do outside research of Tsuchiya and his videos to get the whole picture tho, but the show alone still shows you the basics of driving technique and strategy.
Wangan Midnight, however is the “Why?” Why do we risk our lives on the road? Why do we tackle these hairpins as fast as we can? Why do we go for the fastest lap time? Why do we drive?

What i love about WM is the sadness around it, the atmosphere of obsession with cars that can lead to disasters of your personal life (from lossing your money, friends, family and even your life). And the weird thing is that you still love it. You still want to be deeper in this world, more time to spend speeding at night. Although at the end you are left with a feeling that from dangerous obsession turned into a sweet type of passion!
GTRs are so prevalent in the show due to the period it is taking place in. In the 90/00's GTRs, Supra, Evo, RX7 & 911's were the popular cars to race on the highways. GTRs especially because they were easy to control because of the AWD system it had.
Reina was "Nerfed" because her tuner did not want to be responsible for her death, by building her a monstrous machine to compete with the Z. In his own words " I want you to keep up, but never be in front".
This same tuner also informs us how dangerous racing was becoming before things shifted to the Wangan, many more drivers were crashing because the cars were too powerful/uncontrollable.
IMO Initial D is the Glorification of the Legends and "Heros" that made Touge racing/Drifting into what it is today, where as Wangan Midnight is a warning of what can happen when you let your speed addiction dominate you and its possible consequences.
I am 55 and still a car guy, what the show captures so well is the obsession with your ride, the need to work on it and drive it to the exclusion of all other things. Even the more important things like family and finances.
I see a lot of people comparing Initial D and Wangan Midnight here and there with all kind of arguments, but I will just say this.
Initial D author is a random guy that heard some myth about an Ae86 racer and decided to give it a shot as his next manga, and it somehow worked.
Wangan Midnight author, Michiharu Kusunoki, was an active street racer back in the day with a huge amount of knowledge and first hand experiences. I think that speaks about why Wangan Midnight is way better.
Also Michiharu started the GOD FATHER or all car mangas: Shakotan Boogie.
As for the Wangan Midnight series, the anime was rushed and barelly covers 1/5 of all the story. In the manga all characters have a deep development and shows how both the driver and the car evolves until they are ready for their race. The manga spends entire volumes just rebuilding the cars and trying to archive one extra horsepower and one extra km/h of top speed.
You feel there's too many GT-Rs? Well that's how it was back in the day. GT-R was the ultime car, every racer had one. The only reason Akio and Tetsuya didn't switch is because they like their cars, and thats it. Just watch any real Wangan video from the era and you will see a tsunami of all kind of GT-Rs racing. It was THE car to have.
Initial D HAS WORKED WITH THE DRIFT KING HIMSELF, Keichi Tsuchiya, and most of the Initial D manga is based of KEICHI’S TSUCHIYA ACTUAL LIFE of becoming the touge master and starting a racing career. It is not supernatural or sci-fi by any means and author did absolutely everything he could not only to bring the realistic drifting and cars’ aspect, but also the atmosphere of that time.

I don't think the background of the author should matter too much, I mean Shigeno is a pretty horny and quite frankly, wierd guy (like most manga authors lol) but most people won't give a shit if the show itself is good.
6:17 I’d argue the opposite. Wangan Midnight is far more character-driven than Initial D. When rivals are introduced, they become the protagonists of their own stories, with their cars reflecting their personal journeys. Initial D lacks this level of attention to rivals.
Michiharu Kusunoki, the author of Wangan Midnight, is well-researched as a former automotive journalist, crafting a technical narrative influenced by real-world experiences.
Also, Akio isn’t a true protagonist because Wangan Midnight is an anthology series. He, Reina, and Tatsuya more often are framed as rivals or targets. There's plenty of times they don't even appear in episodes because they're not the main focus.
I'm not sure about the manga but in the anime most characters seem very undercooked to me, like they're missing a part that completes them. Apart from the guy who left his wife and kids for speed and the guy who went to Tokyo to fulfill his dream of street racing the rest of the stories are all patchy I'd say. I don't think any of the stories are terrible but felt incomplete compared to initial D where the entire saga was told in the anime very well.

Wangan had a poor anime adaptation.
The manga is over 700 chapters. The anime was 26 episodes. If assuming each covers 5 chapters, not even 1/5 of the story was animated.
5 chapters is a lot. So you can only imagine how much they needed to trim.
@@Safan118I would say now that you've finished the anime, it's time to dive into WMMT's story mode playthroughs. They're able to cover more character with that adaptation, all the way to the beginning of Metro Highway SPL which takes place after the main series.

6:25 Akio's utter lack of personality I feel like was intentional, not as a "easy to self insert into this guy" type of deal, rather I feel it improves the implied supernatural aspect of this show - Akio is dead, killed by the Devil Z and what is remaining is nothing but a human-shaped servant of the Devil.
This show + Tokyo Xtreme Racer games + real life experience with driving a bunch of different vehicles from brand new to 20 years old gave me a huge appreciation for chassis rigidity of the cars, such an underrated bit, mostly because there is no unit of measuring it.
Initial D is for drivers first
Wangan Midnight is for engine builders/mechanic types first

I am one of the rare kids who actually likes Wangan Midnight over Initial D. Don't get me wrong, Eurobeat's awesome but Wangan Midnight is so much better.
I especially adore Reina. I get the idea of wanting her to be a driver that can fight against the Devil Z and Blackbird but that's what her tuner does not want her becoming. He doesn't want her R32 to become like those cars, even painting it white later on so that people can see her on the road easier. And when she got the chance to drive a much faster R33, while she showed she is a great driver with higher horsepower, something about the car did not sit with her. thus she became content being able to be fast enough to watch the battles between the Devil Z and Blackbird, the goddess who watches the battlefield

wm is why you drive the car, also the consequenses of racing one to the limit and succumbing to the addiction

She's definitely more likeable than most female characters in Initial D imo, with the exception of Mako but even then I think they’re both equally likeable for me
At least those two won't make my eyes roll, which the same can't be said with the other female characters in Initial D

I watched wangan midnight and while I initially did not find it pushing me to the edge of my seat like Initial D did, I appreciated the fictionalized depiction of the car culture. I agree that the characters were not built very well but I interpreted it as there are people who are that passionate about cars, tuning and speed that I just couldn't relate to them. The fact that most of the characters are consciously throwing their life away for a passion which brings them nothing but pain and loss is something a rational person would not do. But nothing about wanting to go 160mph while risking the public is rational. That part is a stark difference with Initial D which sets spotters and clears the touge or atleast tried to do it for a race. The only character I could relate to and his car has my whole heart is Eiji Kamiya in the Blue Mitsubishi Evo V. He is inspired by the idea and wants to join in like most of us, does dive into the madness of pushing his car to the limits to catch up with the speed demons of the show, and lifts the throttle to save his car when he's close to the limit. Is that not realistic? Is that not human? Is that not the love for cars we share? If I could not understand Akio or Tatsuya's actions and determination, I can relate to Eiji who could've given himself to the Wangan, but realised the price and stopped for the love of his car.

I feel this video missed. The side characters were definitely not forgettable, and were definitely designed to be make more impact than our main characters. The technical aspect of Wangan Midnight definitely makes it unique, but to me it's not the defining aspect of the show. As you mentioned, the side character drivers are what star on the show more in terms of character, and to me, they are the actual stars of the show, hence why I usually start me rewatches from Episode 7.
From that first arc highlighting the side characters they highlighted the fact that this racing was never about winners and losers, just those who stay and those who don't. The side characters or 'contenders' each show a unique aspect of the different types of street racers out there, and in the end, there was more to life than racing, while Akio and Shima continue to drive. Each one of those contenders had the potential to win their battle with the Z and the Blackbird, their car not being the one to hold back but in the end it was the driver. Notice how in the end, they were all never enemies, just people who faded out of the top level cause they realized the danger of that level was not something they wanted to sustain.
Its also important to note that unlike Initial D where towards the end, even if racing was good, the outcome always meant Project D won officially, in Wangan Midnight, our main characters trade blows with the purpose of them coming back stronger or different each time. Not that it matters cause again, the main theme is that driving at that level is a journey, like an endless marathon, not a race to be won.
Also not mentioned in the video and unfortunately seemingly ignored in the final opinion is that the show ended abruptly to the 'finale' was basically just another arc, and not a true send off. They just couldn't keep producing the anime so it was a lackluster ending given they needed to just close it. The manga continues and we constantly get new challengers.
Meanwhiel in Initial D, by the time of Project D, the charcater development really starts to be non-existent. Dont get me wrong, as someone who loves the action, Stage 4 and 5 are what i rewatch the most, but in the end what defined the drivers was only their driving and how that developed. It was only really Keisuke that got to develop, and in the end, people still dont think he was the ace of Project D despite Takumi expressing how he thinks Keisuke could totally beat him in the downhill and was his own motivation to get better.
Yea. I mean.... If you already watched Wangan Midnight, you'll never forget the guy that leave his wife and his unborn child only to build a R32 GT-R and race for the last time, or my boi Eiji that get a shot to race in wangan only to realise that he got more important things in his hometown than achieving his dream to become a pro racer (he's too old to do that already)
this series aways allured me as a kid, Having only been exposed to the series via the Maximum Tune series in the arcade based on the IP. And my god after spending the last 4-5 years absorbing myself into the story of wangan midnight through maximum tune and the anime I can see how it has such a big cult following. The maximum tune series in particular portrays the story of wangan midnight so well with its heavy use of trance music
5:41 today? It started in 1999 with Tokyo Xtreme Racer.
While the anime only has some good tracks for some of us (Feedback Landing and all Devil Z songs), ALL Maximum Tune games excel in that department and for me that Trance style is better than eurobeat. (WMMT OST is so great that you can listen to it while doing anything really)
The Wangan has that unique charm to it for me that makes it fun to drive and never gets old,
and I just like driving cars be it in a realistic way or not.

Initial D is the only racing anime that got a faithful adaptation. As others have said, Wangan midnight's adaptation cut out LOTS of character development and an entire arc if I'm not mistaken. Your feeling of the characters being undercooked is mostly because of that, since Initial D is NOT that character focused. Especially in later stages.
Every new character introduced in WM becomes the main character for their arc. They get most of the focus as to why they drive, what car they're driving and why it's important. Barely anyone in Initial D has a reason they drive what they do. Off the top of my head, only Nakazato, Kyoichi, and Hoshino(God Foot) actually have confirmed reasons. And, especially starting in 4th stage, they barely get any time to themselves to be developed. It's like 2 chapters/half an episode and then they're racing project d. And after the race they go straight to the next opponent.
Capeta's animation once he made the switch from karts to cars nosedived, and they made an anime-only ending with because the real one would've been too much of a cliffhanger I guess. There was no unrealistic Formula car drifting, and he actually gets to race Minamoto straight up. Also, it stopped before they could get to the best arc in the manga (All-Japan F3).
Initial D just got the best treatment out of all the racing anime out there. Which is fair, it was probably the most popular of the three, so they had the budget to do so. But that also means that comparing the adaptations isn't a great representation of the actual stories. If you can, you should read the manga versions of all three and compare them that way.

Although the show's soundtrack is good, the arcade game wangan midnight maximum tune's trance soundtrack is unbeatable imo

Not saying I indulge in illegal activities but Wangan is a little bit more relatable compared to initial d to me. Living next to the highway I get to hear the roaring sounds of people race at night. I even crashed on said highway and fixed my car up to be better. Still love initial d and drifting but 500hp cars brings a different kind of excitement.

To answer your question about whether the details of Wangan Midnight's "car tuning lingo", are accurate or not, they are.
Fun fact: The real Mid Night Club had their cars and car builds featured in a British car enthusiast magazine back in the 1990's. I assume that the writer of Wangan Midnight derived a lot of car part and car performance information that he featured in his manga and anime from those magazines.

Bro the final race could be the best race in anime history but it was so much wasted potential, but it was so cool nontheless even better than Initial D final race, for one moment I thought Akio is going to lose this one until the FC guy lift the throttle
Also I really liked Akio, sometimes he is very cartoonish, but I think it was on purpose to shine the bond Driver & Car, also the damn effort he puts rebuilding the engine, welding the chasis and puting 800 km after RGO tuned it was something special

Seriously though both are amazing and I particularly like how in Wangan there doesn't seem to be a "villain" of the series; everyone who actually meets the main cast has a deep respect for each other

We take the perspective of Akio but he isnt the main character. There are two main characters. The 30Z and the Wangan itself.
I'd like to argue that Wangan Midnight has a lot stronger characters compared to Initial D. You have to remember that everyone involved needs to be a little bit crazy to be betting their lives racing at those speeds on 90s tires. A lot of the mysticism around the Z comes from it being such an old chassis with archaic suspension, making it very unpredictable as the chassis flex would be terrible. Akio and Shima are just the upper limit of crazy, but they both reflect the same obsession with their cars but from different incomes.
I like the way you put about their different income level. Akio's working on many part time jobs and sleepless nights tirelessly and likely skipped eat and sleep a lot, then we got Tatsuya who were already born rich from the start.

Mid night really isn’t mysterious its just there not alot of information because its a street racing group started in 1982 they’ve been in a few speedhunters articles featuring there cars at meets and places like tsukuba and dino from speedhunters went to auto garage tbk owned by a member named takashi who has a light blue 930 turbo a few months ago

In the first season of initial D’s production, they had keiichi tsuchiya on board to help with realism and editing. Not sure about the rest of the seasons tho.
Also one reason initial D dropped almost all story past season 3 is because the anime and manga were only really used to advertise arcade games at that point, they didn’t really care about the anime/manga, just more so money.

The whole Wangan series is really great. The anime had so many pitfalls and issues, especially considering that they reduced down 90% of the content from the original manga (including the giant race with Ishida). I think another big turnoff for it is the shitty mid 2000's animation and artstyle, looks very dated now.
I will say, although it is a different feeling, the Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune (arcade series) soundtrack is very good, but in a different way compared to Initial D's eurobeat. I recommend checking it out

I stucked twice on episode 11 of Wangan because it was so boring I didn't have steength to go past it. This third time I managed and yes, it's entartaining nontheless but dialouges really suck.

Maybe Akio isn't a really *deeeep* character, but I like how he goes from a high school student with a stock Z31, a shit-eating grin on his face and an overblown ego to a guy who eventually tamed a seemingly cursed car that could be his coffin several times throughout the series.
I usually think of it as a deliberate writing choice. as it make us see the Z more than the driver himself, as the focus is not Akio, but the Devil Z and people who were mezmerized and want to chase it. But It's also because the anime cut huge ton of stuff of the anime, like the creation of RGO Demo car
because Akio isn't the main character, the Z is.
He's the Z's driver, and he gets his little time at the start of WM, but the true main character is the Wangan itself, and the Z, which charms everyone that sees it.
Roulette-Zoku prefers platforms with a long wheelbase and high displacement engine for high speed stability due the lower polar moment compared to other pure sports or lightweight entry level enthusiast cars. Needless to say flagship tier JDM GT cars and foreign sports cars, supercars even, were the common contenders on the Stutokou loop because the bar were just that high over there. Anything occuring under 265km/h were considered not valid by them.
These guys earn 6 figures paychecks and pour big money into their cars, they're on an entirely different league compared to "country-bums who just throw their old rust buckets off cliffs". according to the bigotry they displayed on numerous bbs discussion board.

Yeah I am also much happier with Wangan than Initial D... Initial D is a lot ~bullshitier... It does however have one or good "tricks" of it`s own :P. Like how Takumi`s dad made him have this cup of water near the hand break and he were suppose to not spill it while going back from the Sushi (or whatever the ~whatever, that was) delivery courses... Assumingly to make him "become one with the hesitations of the center of gravity of the car caused by inertia or centrifuge force or G Force or whatever... And like how practically became obsessed with "downhill" speed because of bored, due to multiple repetition of one and the same route ~over and over and over... again... So he A) had a ton of XP on that route... B) was practically merged with that car C) was gradually picking his pace till it became competitive pace... Now I have to state a few things... I like ~mountain bike downhill... on asphalt :P. Not even rear shock absorber... hard frame and front fork on fat~ish tires... but no actual obstacle course with like rocks and logs and dirt on a very steep narrow course... (not that I can`t do that it`s just neither fun nor pleasure or let alone fast. I like Downwards pointing asphalt with the described bike :P... At least I used to... On cars however... Upwards feels a lot more safe... however it is very weary on the car... I could be a bad mechanical handler of vehicles... but I actually have 2 disconnected clutches due to friction disks wear out ~on "the way up"... and since it`s all coming out of my own pocket ~I simply stopped going elevated places o_0... I also have plenty of highway experience... It truly is just a matter of horse powers and it`s very pleasant, but everywhere outside of Germany... also illegal ~also of course... it`s your car and your life... and honestly Vehicles that cannot do 300 in 2024 are embarrassment and should not be ~forced to begin with... the result is not a result at all and you are severely wearing and tearing your wheels for ... most middle aged combi Mercedes can do above 230... my car can do 200 and I haven`t recently reach it so It can be just memory talk... and I neither have the pocket nor the technical know how or time (because ultimately I won`t actually be doing it myself)... to enable it to go faster... and why... will most likely burn more fuel (it burns plenty as it is) and it will wear and tear itself even more... and I don`t have any actual "job" on the highway either...
Which leads me to my final "topic"... I actually worked as delivery driver for car parts warehouse for a while... obviously the vehicle they were providing wasn`t much ~but I drove the *uck out of it ~ :P I mean come on... A car which get to be fueled and maintained by not my own money with repeatable ~pleasing routes... Some had a few good very ~secluded and long straights... which gradually I went to nearly as fast as that garbage can could go ~and probably faster... some good mountain turns which offered some fun on both "clear" and with ~overtake of other drivers which haven`t droved the amount of kilometers I had (because I drove plenty in before I worked as a driver as well) and nearly not at all on that exact same route... Actually I do prefer "clean" just the road and the car... other drivers are just an annoying stall or if they aren`t they contribute with nothing (I won`t explain that). Like I also had ~highway on that firm car and I went in there with ~plenty of highway "time" because of previous endeavors. Once I get a hang of the limits of the car I were driving em ~fairly close to their upper limits... but it is as I've said... Mostly nothing is really unrealistic in initial D I'll say but exaggerated for drama, maybe the biggest one is how the show says drifting is faster especially on tarmac when irl gripping is always going to be faster
