  • The Miata might be the perfect project car. With endless aftermarket and engine swap options - it provides a platform where the only thing stopping you is your imagination. However what happens when you take the engine out of the Honda Odyssey and place it in such a small platform? The J32 engine sits very odd inside the bay of the Miata, but somehow it works. So what's it like driving a V6 swapped Miata? Let's for a drive and find out! Thanks for watching and new uploads every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday!

The '99 Odyssey weighs about 4,200 lbs and the 2.3L FA23A7 I4 in the '98 simply didn't have enough power, so they used the J35A1 V6, which displaces 3.5L because of a longer stroke than the 3.0L J30A3 in the Accord V6 at the time. The longer stroke lowered the redline to 6300RPM, but provided the much needed low end torque required for a heavy vehicle designed to carry up to 8 people and/or heavy cargo. The J35 has been the only engine option in the Odyssey ever since and it currently makes 280HP and 262 lb-ft in the current Odyssey.

Why would u use 32 heads on a 37 lol there's no way the chambers are bigger or the valves or the cams. The 3.7 is 300 hp out of the box with full VTEC intake and exhaust. J35 does not. Glad I found this video because I've fantasized for a very long time about how a J35 would feel in a NA Miata. My first car out of college was a '90 Miata, the most enjoyable car I've ever had, but it did lack a bit on the power and aural department. My brother in law had a MX-3 with the sweet -sounding K8 1.8 V-6, even though that had 135hp I thought it would go great in the Miata, or the KL from the MX-6, but Mazda never bought that idea. Fast forward to present day, my garage queen is a BMW F32, but my daily driver is a 2013 Odyssey and my wife has an Acura MDX, both with the J35. I've imagined what that V6 growl would sound and feel like in a Miata. Makes me want to buy a sort-of-decent Miata right now and source a J35. (The one in this video sound kind of subdued, the exhaust is not making it justice.)

NB Miata. All-aluminum LH8, LH9, or L33 5.3L LS. Stock engine, rebuilt with forged stuff if it’s a high-mileage engine (no need at all for more than the 320-340 hp and 330-360 ft.-lbs those engines make on a 93 octane tune, or moving the powerband up to like 5-6K rpm with a hot cam). Fully built factory Miata trans, custom rear with Ford 8.8” center section and Detroit Truetrac. Subtle, but stout roll bar. Some kind of street-friendly aftermarket brake kit, relatively forgiving spring rates and wheel and tire package (I don’t race, it would just be for fun out on country roads). I’ve built it a thousand times in my head, and I hope to build it for real soon once I build my shop.

I know this is an older video.. but I've grown pretty fond of the J series engines. I put a supercharger from a Grand Prix on my old ladies' 06 Honda Pilot.. it definitely has some pick up and go.. after a tune, of course.. we have it pushing 5 lbs of boost, nothing crazy.., running on 89 pump gas, with some cooler plugs, K&N, Cat delete, stright 2 and a half inch exhaust, with a cherry bomb and resonator tip... oil catch can etc etc. sounds NASCARish hahaha... it runs great.. it's pulling from the front wheels on the dyno 331 HP with 352 lbs of TRQ... not the fastest but good enough for her.. she's like the supercharger whine and the blow off.. whaaaaaa psssshhhh... whaaaaa psssshhh.. hood shuts perfectly.. thing flies in 4WD

Not a hugh fan of the NA or B but my favorite swap would be a balance of power, drivability, reliability, access to parts/tuning, cost, vehicle dynamics and overall integration of the finished project. Blowers and turbos are fine for some but I was never one for simply chasing HP or red line numbers, same with the LS and Coyote, more than I need or want to spend to have fun.
the Ford/Mazda 2.5 swap is at the top of the list with the Odyssey V6 close behind, both fit the character I'd want from the build.

I've been looking into Miata for a project, and I like the idea of a V-6. American V-8 in a tiny roadster has been a winning formula ever since the Sunbeam Tiger, but I think it's a raw idea that usually ends up being a bit vulgar. Everybody who owns one wants everybody else to know they've got a V-8 under the hood. The V-6 brings a bucket or two of power and torque to the party with a bit more finesse IMHO. I've owned a few Duratec 25 cars and swapped in the Duratec 30 and LOVE the sound those produce.
My first choice would be the Rocketeer swap. Having worked with those engines I have a few ideas about how to make it uniquely mine. Perhaps not as refined as choice 2, but it has timing chains rather than a timing belt so it'll run forever with little worry.
Second choice the Honda JV-6 swap. Maybe a 3.5 from a minivan just for the quirky-ness of that option, not to mention it might squeeze out a few extra beans. Timing belt setup makes it a smoother, more comfortable choice.

I truly believe JV6 will the future swap of choice for miatas. It's cheap, plentiful, Honda reliability, gobs of torque, and a growing aftermarket. Most people also don't know this is a SOHC with VTEC. SOHC!!! You can mix-and-match parts of the engine much like the K-series. The ones from Odysseys and Accords can run on 86 gas, or put in factory pistons from later models for higher compression. It is lighter than the LS and doesn't burn tires every time you step it on (unless that's your thing) while providing tons of usable power. You can even choose to build it NA or boost, which it has been proven to be capable of big power.

It's aluminum so, it shouldn't weigh much more than the BP. And at least double the HP with triple easily obtainable in reliable tune. I'm sold.

I really do love a J series engine and loved the one in my Saturn Vue, but if I had a Miata with a blown motor, I'm doing a GM LFX V6 swap. They make great power, they were available in a ton of different cars so they're cheap, reasonably reliable, and they scream. My dad had a 2016 CTS with one of those motors and it revved quickly to nearly 7k all day making about 330hp. More than enough power, and not to much down low torque kind a LS that's just going to spin the tires all day.

Because the stock BP 1.8 engine had a heavy iron block and was fairly wide with the intake and exhaust manifolds, almost any aluminum engine I4 to V8 can be put in without causing much change in the car's weight distribution. Some people are doing LFX GM V-6 swaps, and a common NC swap is to go from the stock 2.0L to the 2.5L I4 Ecotec used in a bunch of Ford cars, since those engine are pretty cheap.
