Looks like the Mazda slipped to the side of the rollers when it pulled it self of the ramps during that last test, so I would be so sure that it passed the three wheel slip test.
I think their AWD mechanism is quite similar. The reason why CX-5 got passed for the last test is based on the more powerful torque engine. Thank you for this great test!
Negative. The Mazda’s AWD system is programmed to lock the wheels that are spinning so that power can be sent to the wheels with traction when you put it in the off road mode.
My guess is that, for overall driveability and performance in most conditions, the traction control system must not grab the brakes too hard when slipping. Otherwise, you may lose some forward momentum when accellerating on a slippery surface. Therefore, it makes sense for a car not to make it out of a 3-wheel slip test, without engaging som kind of "mode".
You should turn off traction control if your trying to get a vehicle unstuck. I remember a video you did a while back with a Subaru where you couldn’t make it up a snow covered road with traction control on, but it made it up no problem with traction control off.

@@twillias4714 on manual transmission and older models with a real limited slip differential and a traditional automatic - absolutely agree. On the new models with cvt transmissions -not so much. 6'5" here. Get the Kia Soul Turbo. Kind of quick with ample headroom. Avoid the sunroof as you loose headroom. FWD only is a bit of a letdown, just get some good winter tyres.
@@talltomtube in the RGV part of Texas no need for snow or winter tires, often daytime temps are 70-80F and snow is a 100 year event where everything shuts down. On the plus side, I grew my first pineapple last year (takes 4 years)
Good test.... thanks. It seems you were favoring the mazda. Should have given the nissan a chance on the 3 wheel roller test.
great job as always Tommy.....love this segment....Mazda might have worked hard but it made it off compared to Nissan. I think you should create a list of results of this slip test. If I was shopping for a AWD SUV, I would LOVE to consult that list!!!
Mazda + clutch LSD at the rear and helical in the front for me. ;)
my nissan rogue does way better with its AWD when the traction control is turned off, and not in eco mode. I think most SUVs and crossovers have that button/feature, you should include that on the roller tests Tommy!🤔
I really really like these slip test videos you and your dad have been doing. Really great stuff. You can see how the car is thinking to get itself “unstuck” great job. Maybe do some 4x4 test with this if possible. Would be cool to see like a Jeep Wrangler vs a FJ cruiser for example
At least with the Mazda it didn’t get stuck! If you want to get stuck get the Rogue!
Hope you can do a slip test on 21’ Toyota Sienna AWD soon? Because i am want to see how good is that AWD system work before i make my decision on FWD or AWD thanks in advance
Did the Mazda slip of the roller at the end?
Looked like it did
I was about 2 say the same thing. The mazda went sideways and got traction from the side
Here it slipped off but CX-5 can do that in offroad mode. It is struggling a little though.
Tommy, a Rogue and an AWD test all in one video? I think I'm in heaven 😍
Tommy, Mazda actually failed the 3wheel stuck test. Run the video in 1/2 speed and you will see the vehicle drifted until catching traction on the roller frame.
It catched the frame but in offroad mode it can pass it anyway.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers , I would rather see the test done properly. Do you have a UA-cam chnl showing what you claim?
@@awesomexistence Yes I have, you can CX-5 test there 🙂
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers I viewed your test which is pretty well done. Mazda struggled (3:00 mark) but made it. Style for testing is done well with the only difference with TFL being TFL has a deeper-wider set of rollers which may give a slight bit more difficulty to the test. I’ll check out some of your other tests. Thanks

Mazda makes the best AWD system in the world. As of 2016, even better than Subaru.
This videos are my fav.good job Tommy 👍🏼👍🏼
I take the Mazda all the time. When you get stuck and need a push, the look of the car will get people to you. I’m serious
Hey Tommy, do you have any documentation where you keep track of how the vehicles do? Maybe even a Rogue split test 3 seconds to move... or failed etc. that type of documentation, i'd love to look at it!
I love the new Rogue interior and exterior.
Too bad that they are too fragile.
If the engineer says the offroad mode makes a big difference, and if the vehicle can detect which wheels are slipping....why not just engineer that mode to kick in automatically?
I own a 2014 cx5 gt and so far so good! Love the car!!
Great Video! and smart comparison. The Canadians have long praised mazda for doing well in snow and ice and arguably second only to subaru up there (and they would know) so I suspected the mazda would do well here. the new rogue is certainly a contender and have vastly improved.
Subaru’s are definitely not the best anymore. The cvt transmission limits capability. Mazda could easily outperform a Subaru.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 but as far as full-time AWD capability Subaru has that down to a science.
@@twillias4714 on manual transmission and older models with a real limited slip differential and a traditional automatic - absolutely agree. On the new models with cvt transmissions -not so much. The initial torque limitations on the cvt transmissions severely impact off road ability in certain situations. Example? A dirt and gravel road with an uneven surface at a steep grade. In fact, TFL has a video that proves this.
Did you do this test on Bronco Sport?
Thank you for these videos! Would love to have seen the traction control/ VDC turned off for the Nissan to see how much it made a difference. When I know I'm going to be in a slippery situation like getting over a snowbank, I turn off VDC so the car doesn't cut back as much power. Then I reengage for normal driving. You did turn it off once on the Mazda but not the Nissan.
What are the rollers? Are "car wheel rollers" something you can just buy? Would like to test my GT-R. lol
As a major Nissan fan, I REALLY wish they'd quit putting damn CVTs in everything...
which in this class do you believe is the best on this test?
Review the Nissan against the new outlander with their s-awc. Both share power trains so it’s be great to see how the awd system is tuned
I hope you can make slip test with 2021 nissan rogue and toyota rav4. Thanks.
Ii have Michelin m&s rated tires on my 2013 CX5 and they can crawl out of anything .saves me a lot of shoveling in the winter.
Maybe this is a dumb question, but are you steadily letting onto the accelerator during these tests? Or are you modulating the accelerator?
Amazing to see that in 2021 manufacturers still can't put their AWD systems to work as good as diff lockers....check the FCA Toro, for sale in south america, can't handle a bit of sand.
I went from a 2010 Rogue to a 2021 Rogue and man they really did something different this time, mine is also AWD since I live in Illinois and need it for the snow. My 2010 was decent in the snow and I can't wait to see how the 2021 does.
I had to listen to it again. That Nissan rogue is $38k, as equipped!?! That Mazda is waaaaaaay better.
Except the nissan is likely going to have 5k off the msrp right off the bat. Both of these cars are ridiculously overpriced. Mazda doesn’t do incentives so naturally they’ll move less product.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 You are correct about Nissan incentives, but for $35-40k, I'll choose a luxurious, quick, and fun to drive compact CUV with a reliable transmission every day.
@@FoYo1005 I don’t disagree. Both are fantastic offerings for both manufacturers. I do agree the traditional automatic will be more reliable in the long run as well. Cheers
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 I want to agree that both vehicles are good. I once rented a low spec Nissan Rogue and came away impressed at its utility and feel. I like it way better than comparable Subarus at the time.
@@haroldbeauchamp3770 The mazda will maintain its resale value. The Nissan will be half hte price in a year.
So, the Toyota Camry is the best AWD then?
its more down to power. the camry has more thus it can put down more in that wheel that is on the ground even with more going to the front. The above two dont put down as much power in the rear to be able to push themselves out. If the engine were producing more power it would be a different story.
I’m wanting to get that Mazda
I agree! Great test and a good demo of what AWD can and can't do. Might as well call those cars 3WD.
I want to see if locking the awd mode helps
Really liking the Rogue, how much is the "Alex" option?
Mazda for me because it doesn't have the crappy cut, come on Nissan get clue.
Please do the nissan armada on the slip test!!
I did research on the Mazda AWD system it uses cameras to detect when it will need AWD it’s not constantly on that’s why it did less of a better job but that’s how you get better gas mileage that way and The off-road button is tuned for exactly this and offering
Where did you read that? Don’t get that impression at all when my rear and front camera have a good amount of mud on them while on some very muddy back roads. To be far I always turn off traction control.
Hey guys.. Why you dont do a slip test for the 2021 Toyota Venza. You did a review on that but no slip test! Did toyota paid you not to film a slip test?
TFL and your old man had been synonymous with off road testing for a long time but this new generational tester is ridiculous. Take it to your old man's off road testing grounds already! Nothing can replace the real rubber meets the dirt mud and snow testing on offroading performance in the field. That's where the dirt, mud and snow actually fill the threads. You can't possibly reliably simulate the conditions with dry clean tires on shiny metals.
how is your Slo-Mo camera battery always full?
When are you getting your new upgraded rollers?
Did you ever try this test with the Nissan Frontier Pro 4x?
No. Tommy is very fickle with his roller tests. For example they had a Bronco Sport the other day and didn’t test it on the rollers. If they had, it’d had been a UA-cam first and exclusive. I have no idea why he’s not more consistent.
We have both exact vehicles in the family the Mazda is superior.
Hey guys y’all should do a mdx sh-awd test
Congrats on reaching 1 million subs.... the mazda cx5 performed better than the nissan rogue...Nice video
