The whole Silk Degrees album is fire! Truly one of the great works of popular art of the 20th century. Boz never really reached those heights again but what a monumental album. By the way, Harri, you're probably referring to Rita Coolidge's hit cover version of this.
I agree with others, this whole album is a masterpiece! You must listen to the long version of “Look what you’ve done to me” from him. It’s such an emotion stirring, beautiful song.
boz's vocal is so plaintive and yearning here, it's one of my favourites by him. the other is "harbour lights", another lament but a tone cooler, wistful but doesn't quite bring the tears, for me at least. boz is at his best with mournful ballads like these, i think. also: as others have said, there was another hit version of this song by rita coolidge in the late '70s that may be where you've heard this melody before. i loved her cover also.
I can't believe how many hits Boz Scaggs had in this album. I am familiar with them all but did not know who sang it. I was a little kid. The funky song you are referring to is "Low Down".
Been a fan since the 70’s. He is a great artist and his live music is insane. He also did some albums where he sings jazz standards which shows just how versatile he is. Beautiful music, beautiful song, beautiful artist.
Great request Di! I love this song. Boz has so much soul in his songs. Rita Coolidge did a fantastic cover. A little different but still great. Thanks Harry. 🔥👍🇨🇦🇺🇦🇺🇸🇬🇧🤴🙃
Boz is still touring this summer, he comes close to where I live, it's at an Ampitheater, so the sound should be good, I'll let everyone know if he still has the magic.
He is one best voice in music business and now how to being it home and singing for other people he takes the place of other singer great voice and other who did was flo and eddie
"Loan Me A Dime" w/ Duane Allman on guitar is a must-hear! Silk Degrees is a truly fine album, too. "Jo Jo," "Look What You've Done To Me." Fantastic stuff!
Sir, bet the song you were trying to remember was either "Lido Shuffle" or "Lowdown". Either one would be a great reaction for you. Isn't Mr. Boz Scaggs amazing? SO underrated! Thank you, sir, for reacting to this beauty!
That's why I love Boz Scaggs. His music is none like any other artist. He can be country, funky, beautiful, emotional. He's got it all! You really need to hear his library. Start with his 'Moments' album.
Masterpiece, classic melody that’s timeless and universal. I love the imagery with water, landscapes, seascapes,. Whatever the two have to face , better or worse, whatever they do they will do alone , and draw strength from each other through that journey.. The weather references seem symbolic of bad times they will endure but as long as they have each other they can survive it. It seems okay to live in a little stormy darkness with the right support.
I love Boz Scaggs. I’ve seen him solo 3 times in concert plus once WITH Michael McDonald and once with the Dukes of September. I STRONGLY suggest going back into his older library. Try Dinah Flo, We Were Always Sweethearts, Freedom for the Stallion, My Time and especially Loan Me A Dime. All so very special.
I was 9 yrs old when Rita Coolidge released this in 77’ always thought she was the original until recently . The original is Beautiful by Skaggs…. Rita Coolidge gets my feels on this one - so Melancholy 😢 just a beautiful voice.
I know Boz released his version in 1976 but it was on the b-side of his popular hit Lido Shuffle so I remember Rita Collidge's version more since it was a top ten hit in 1977..she did a great job! I do love Boz though my favorite songs being Lido Shuffle and Breakdown Dead Ahead.Keep On Rockin'
You did LOW Down by him. That's the funky one. This is my favorite Boz Scaggs song. It gets me everytime!! He's got a lot of romantic songs. Rita Coolidge does this song. But, Boz beats hers hands down!! I'm was hoping you would do this one. Try Downright Woman
The funky bass line had to be either "Lido Shuffle" or "Lowdown." This is one of my all time fav albums and this song in particular sends chills all over. A beautiful performance. "Harbor Lights" in another great one from this album. I think Anne Murray did "All Alone" back in the 70s.
Di, You chose a terrific request from a truly great singer and guitarist. I have followed Boz going way back to his Loan Me A Dime release featuring Duane Allman. I have a still available DVD entitled Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Live which I very highly recommend. It is a concert from The Great American Music Hall in San Francisco.
The whole "Silk Degrees" album is great. Remember when it came out in 1976. It has a bluesy sound to it. Two of his most famous songs from that album are "Lowdown" & "Lido Shuffle". Some other songs are "It's Over", "What Can I Say", "Look What You've Done To Me", "Harbor Lights" & "Jump Street".
A lot of people covered this song, but Boz wrote it. Silk Degrees is a great album, but if you want to hear Boz Skaggs' masterpiece you have to listen to him and Duane Allman perform "Loan Me a Dime."
HIGH Harri..... I have seen "The BOZ" Live 4 times. Always a great show with exceptional songs. The women go crazy when he does this song throwing their underwear on stage. Have a Incredibly Successful Day
I bought the silk degrees album with my first pay cheque in 1976. Loved it to bits then, and, still do to this day. A timeless classic which I never tire of playing
There were so many great songs on the "Silk Degrees" album, which was a smash hit. I didn't know anyone who didn't buy that album and this was one of the songs on that album, but they could release ALL of the songs as singles so this one fell thru the cracks, then Rita Collage released it as a single and her version was a #1 hit. It stood at the top of the charts for quite some time, as I recall?
This is one of those rare times where an artist writes a song but doesn’t release it as a single and right at the same time another artist asks if they can record it and then they make it a big hit. They’re not really covers in the sense that it’s done much later but almost at the same time or year. Another example is Pat Benatar singing John Cougar’s “I Need A Lover”.
By the comments you would think this is Boz Scaggs only album. He was outstanding right from his early days and probably had 4 or 5 successful albums before this one.. He went to England (Europe) for a while and was a big hit their as well. This album is one of his greats, but he has done some really good ones of late as well. How about his early works "Moments" and his "Slow Dancer" albums.
I had this album back in the day. It had some great songs on it (including this one). You might want to check out "Lido Shuffle", "Look What You've Done to Me", "Lowdown" -- pretty much all of the songs on this album, were great.
Funny how I have this album and having worked in a record shop for almost 10 years, I have sold many copies of ‘Silk Degrees’, but never noticed this song was on there. We are pretty much all more familiar with the Rita Coolidge version and I just found out that apparently, Michael Jackson also recorded this song, but it was never released. 😱
Thank you for your insightful analysis of one of the most moving songs I've experienced. It expresses trust, faith and gentle surrender like no other song i know
Hi Harri, the song you were thinking of was Lowdown, co-written by Boz Scaggs and David Paich. David Paich, an excellent arranger, keyboard player and songwriter, along with bassist David Hungate and drummer Jeff Porcaro, went on to be founder members of Toto. Paich's father was Marty Paich, who was, like his son, an arranger, composer, leader, pianist and producer, who worked with a lot of big names in Jazz and Swing music. Perhaps his most notable collaboration, was with Mel Torme, The Velvet Fog, whose M.D., he was and many of Torme's hits were recorded with The Marty Paich Dectet. Boz Scaggs, is from Texas and one of his early gigs was with The Steve Miller Band, he left and went solo and played many styles of music during his long career. Silk Degrees, the album that this track and Lowdown, were from, was recorded in February 1976 and was his breakthrough album. Some people will try and tell you it was the only worthwhile thing he did, nothing could be further from the truth, anything with his name on is worth a listen. To come a little more up to date, he still gigs and records with a band called The Dukes Of September, which includes Steely Dan's Donald Fagen, The Doobie Brothers' Michael Mc Donald along with The Steely Dan Touring Band, who I think you would love. Keep up with the great work, stay safe. Best wishes from London, England.
Beautiful song! In 1976, Frankie Valli reached No. 27 on the U.S. adult contemporary singles chart with his cover of "We're All Alone," and like others have said, Rita Coolidge scored a Top 10 hit (No. 7) with her version in 1977.
Hey Harri..... One day you will listen to Bob Dylan - "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding"..... With Lyrics/live. You and your subscribers will be so glad you did.
Also watch the rendition from(Offical music video) Rita Coolidge a Native American Cherokee Indian. Different & absolutely fabulous. I love both versions equally. Tc
One thing about the baby boomers their voice has some gentle quality in them. Not all out forcefulness like Celine Dione or Whitney Houston, the Generation Xes. I compare him like the Bee Gees - able to take on funky songs as well as emotional songs but oh so gentle. Bee Gees are also baby boomers.
If you write a song. And the likes of Rita Coolidge, and Reba Mcentire cover it. You have to know that's a damn fine song. If you get the chance give those others a listen. Also. the whole Silk Degrees album is a really good listen if you get the chance.
If you love this, you’d love Look What You’ve Done To Me. You may have reacted to it already, since I’m a couple of months past you posting this, so I’ll head out to check!
"Silk Degrees" may just be one of the top three albums of all time.
Yes! Loved this album and wore it out back in the day. Met Boz Scaggs once in SF. He had his own cafe on Lombard St.
Yes I wore this album out as well. Still have it though. Sounds very scratchy. I'm a 66 year old drummer & appreciate your song choices. God bless.
@@ryden7114 God bless you too!! 66 as well...lol!!
The whole Silk Degrees album is fire! Truly one of the great works of popular art of the 20th century. Boz never really reached those heights again but what a monumental album. By the way, Harri, you're probably referring to Rita Coolidge's hit cover version of this.
A fave of mine. It just never gets old.
Agree with you both! 💖
I agree with others, this whole album is a masterpiece! You must listen to the long version of “Look what you’ve done to me” from him. It’s such an emotion stirring, beautiful song.
Yes it is!!
Boz Skaggs went to school with Steve Miller and they were writing songs together when they were about twelve years old.
Great song. Rita Coolage does a cover that is absolutely beautiful!
Rita's version was so pretty and awesome. Boz is a great sonwriter, great lyrics !
Don't forget Franki Valli's version!
Versions are good. The originals is great
@@kaipokine97 Anne Murray covered this song also, but I agree the original is still a notch above the covers.
I have tickets to see 78 year old Boz Skaggs next month. This will be my second time seeing him live.
boz's vocal is so plaintive and yearning here, it's one of my favourites by him. the other is "harbour lights", another lament but a tone cooler, wistful but doesn't quite bring the tears, for me at least.
boz is at his best with mournful ballads like these, i think.
also: as others have said, there was another hit version of this song by rita coolidge in the late '70s that may be where you've heard this melody before. i loved her cover also.
When I went to see him in concert I expected more of a zz top type. But he is the smoothest human I've ever seen. Thanks for the heartfelt reaction
There's a reason so many artists have chosen to sing this beautiful song....
My most treasured Album from the 70's love every track and love his unique voice, my favourite tracks are '' Lowdown '' and '' Harbour lights '' ❤❤❤
I can't believe how many hits Boz Scaggs had in this album. I am familiar with them all but did not know who sang it. I was a little kid. The funky song you are referring to is "Low Down".
Rita's version was a huge hit. My favorite Boz song is "You Can Have Me Anytime" from 1980. His ballads are very powerful.
You're missing out if you haven't listened to Some Things Happen. Came out in the mid-90s I believe. Beautiful song.
If you look into more Boz Scaggs, consider "Love, Look What You've Done To Me". (I close my eyes when I hear it... it's one of those.) 😊
Rita Collidge did this song beautifully.I like both versions .
I once made a Boz Scaggs Greatest Hits Compilation..... it ended up with 66 songs. I have all his music in my massive collection.
Been a fan since the 70’s. He is a great artist and his live music is insane. He also did some albums where he sings jazz standards which shows just how versatile he is. Beautiful music, beautiful song, beautiful artist.
This album is a masterpiece in every respect.
Amazing soulful love song masterpiece.
He definitely still has the magic. Saw him last year in San Antonio. Love his latest album Out of the Blues.❤
I agree,he definitely does still have the magic
He is one best voice in music business and now how to being it home and singing for other people he takes the place of other singer great voice and other who did was flo and eddie
"Loan Me A Dime" w/ Duane Allman on guitar is a must-hear! Silk Degrees is a truly fine album, too. "Jo Jo," "Look What You've Done To Me." Fantastic stuff!

Love your channel and thank you for checking out Boz Scaggs. You must check out "Lowdown" and "Look What You've Done to Me". You won't be sorry.
Sad to think, the new generation have lost the ability to write emotional, heart felt songs like this.
I feel like i wanna listen to this music 20x a day when i hit my 60s,, lol im only 34 and i really like this song
Masterpiece, classic melody that’s timeless and universal. I love the imagery with water, landscapes, seascapes,. Somebody Loan Me a Dime is a bluesy masterpiece. It is long but a must listen Harri.
YES! With the late, great Duane Allman on guitar!
A lot of people covered this song, but Boz wrote it. Silk Degrees is a great album, but if you want to hear Boz Skaggs' masterpiece you have to listen to him and Duane Allman perform "Loan Me a Dime."
Ya gotta listen to “Harbor Lights” by Boz. One of my favs!
Great selection, Di Shields! Simply beautiful and just another classic from Scaggs' "Silk Degrees" album.
This album crossed all charts and every gondras in 1976/77 I was witness! I got the "Album" first day, and I sreem the same in my car, forever!!!
HIGH Harri..... I have seen "The BOZ" Live 4 times. Always a great show with exceptional songs. The women go crazy when he does this song throwing their underwear on stage. Have a Incredibly Successful Day

Don't think Karen covered this one but there's a great cover by Rita Coolidge, well worth the listen.
Yes Rita Coolidge had to big hits with Your Love is Lifting Me Higher and this one also!🙏🏻
A huge hit and even better version than this .

Afternoon Mr B the violins 🎻
lift one up and away, regards M Mangawhero
The orchestration sounds like the work he did with "hitman" David Foster who did lot of movie stuff in the 80s.
I had this album back in the day. It had some great songs on it (including this one). You might want to check out "Lido Shuffle", "Look What You've Done to Me", "Lowdown" -- pretty much all of the songs on this album, were great.
His Lido Shuffle is funky
Great, great track. Harbor Lights is even better.
Saw him 3 years ago still fantastic!!
Rita Coolidge brought his to another level.......that being said he wrote it.
standing ovation x2
my favorite album in high school. He was phenomenal live, I saw him in NYC at the Beacon I believe.
Great song from a great album. Much better than the more commonly known cover.
Love the very grandeur interlude with colosal strings orchestra.
Rita Coolidge did a fantastic cover of this a year later that was a world wide hit.
Thank you for your insightful analysis of one of the most moving songs I've experienced. It expresses trust, faith and gentle surrender like no other song i know

I heard it first by Rita Coolude who had sung backup for Boz. and yeah, "Lowdown" is very funky vs this sentimental ballad!
Boz stands tall beside Michael McDonald, Phoebe Snow, Donald Fagen et al in the New York Rock & Soul Revue.
I like Rita Coolidge's version but IMO, Boz edges her out! This is amazing!!
Damn I wore this album out! Thanks for the memories ❤️
Love the Boz. Love the Silk Degrees Alblumn.
Melissa Manchester sang it , it's a beautiful song
Love this song. I first heard Rita Coolidge do it. I'm pretty sure she was a background singer for Boz Scaggs. Rod Stewart had a cover hit.
I got my tickets for Aug 2 in Ridgefield Ct. Rock on all.
I totally agree
The funky song that you reacted to was “Lowdown “ from the same album, “Silk Degrees “, a fantastic album. Check out “Georgia “ from the same album.
Beautiful song! In 1976, Frankie Valli reached No. 27 on the U.S. adult contemporary singles chart with his cover of "We're All Alone," and like others have said, Rita Coolidge scored a Top 10 hit (No. 7) with her version in 1977.
This album, Silk Degrees, 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"Harbor Lights" from the same album is fantastic....as some mentioned, Silk Degrees IS fire - not a bad song on it.
Exactly. The rest of his songs are completely different than his 2 top songs. Low Down and Lido Shuffel
Paul anka Times of our life
Rita Coolidge recorded also.
Rita Coolidge has a hit with this too
Hey Harri..... One day you will listen to Bob Dylan - "It's Alright Ma, I'm Only Bleeding"..... With Lyrics/live. You and your subscribers will be so glad you did.
Love Boz and this song. But you need to check out Rita Coolidge's version. She's got a beautiful voice.
Also watch the rendition from(Offical music video) Rita Coolidge a Native American Cherokee Indian. Different & absolutely fabulous. I love both versions equally. Tc
If you like this song there's another one Harbor Lights on the same lp you must hear. This album is one of the greatest ever recorded.
Listen to Miss Sun by the boz....
If you write a song. And the likes of Rita Coolidge, and Reba Mcentire cover it. You have to know that's a damn fine song. If you get the chance give those others a listen. Also. the whole Silk Degrees album is a really good listen if you get the chance.
IMO Boz Scaggs best song is Heart of Mine.
If you love this, you’d love Look What You’ve Done To Me. You may have reacted to it already, since I’m a couple of months past you posting this, so I’ll head out to check!
Rita Coolidge’s version is phenomenal!
Hi Mr. Harri, R, are,, Carpenter , not cap.. ♠W.G.
Please react to Jojo, Some Things Happen and Ask me About Nothing but the Blues. My favorite Boz Scaggs songs.
Oh ya..this 1..oiV
👍
Do you ever share your favorites with friends?
Rita Coolidge did a very popular cover I still love the original better🤷🏻♂️
@5:-00, probably Lido
