I used to teach Tractor trailer driving.... you are doing much better than you started Ryan.... Glad to see you enjoying what your doing... Nice Alley dock backing
Your first 40 loads has made you much more confident and it shows. Looks like you will finish in time to do field and planting work. Good luck with dry weather and fields to get the crops in. I hope the trade deals kick up all farm prices for a great year. Thanks for bringing us along. Sure is beautiful back home.
Ryan, it still breaks my heart seeing those precious folks in the Missouri and Mississippi River valleys still under water in some areas! So proud of you guys for being a touching heart to those great folks with the money/donations you received! May God reward you 10 fold for lending a helping hand! Keep practicing on the shifting! You'll get it down pat sooner or later! Another amazing video! God bless you and your family!
Hi Ryan I used to live in Cuba City and watching you driving down the road and I see familiar stuff the brings back a lot of memories doing a good job thanks
If you want a better reading on the gauges only set the tractor or trailer brakes. If they are both set you are compressing the bags and won't get a spot on reading on them.
great video Ryan. You are pretty smooth now on the shifting. You can't beat the fuller transmission. I drove for a lot of years with that transmission.
Thx for sharing this with us. 1 Advice: put some big iron pieces around your fueltanks and unloading place of the bins. There will be come a moment you'll hit them...
Here in CT, we have had 8 days of rain and the forecast is rain thru the rest of the week.....grrrr outside work is backing up like a plugged drain. Feel for ya since you have to soon start planting but you field are probably straight mud.
I did the cross country driving thing for a year, the most valuable trick I learned was to not let the RPM's get to high before changing gears. Hope this helps.
It's crazy to see how your confidence has changed driving the truck from the beginning till now. How much has this helped not having to wait on other drivers and to do things on their times?
Ryan set you're trailer brakes only when loading the front hopper. I'm going off memory but my old Freightliner was 58 on front hopper an than when loaded it was 68 at 80,000. You're trailer beings it's Wilson should be 66-67 for 80,000= 34,000 on trailer axles... Take this for what it's worth when shifting I noticed you are hitting the fuel peddle hard on the shifts cause I could hear it hit hard in the transmission ease into so you don't have such a hard shock load on the drive line things will last longer even though you have the M11 in the truck them super 10's aren't a very tuff trany
Did I hear that right?! “I love this transmission” for a guy who hadn’t touched a manual transmission vehicle ever just last fall when you picked this truck up you sure have come a long way. Awesome job Ryan! Really happy to see the truck up and running and of course watching your videos. You definitely do add horsepower to the truck when you know how to shift lool. Keep up the great work.
Very nice feature-length video, Ryan. Thanks for taking us with you through the whole process. Think back a year or two ago and how your grain was handled at that time. Look how much it has changed! Six short (well, *winter* ) months, and now Big Red is fully operational and serving your needs. One silly question: if the tractor lacks a Jake brake, what do you do in an emergency stopping situation? Nice job, man.
Most of the time the response will be, STAB the brakes, downshift, STAB the brakes again. Repeat until stopped. If it's more of a "I have to stop or run over a bus load of kids", Take it off the road toward a ditch/guide rail/barrier or similar and pop the emergency brake. These would be the same with a Jake, the Jake just gives you a way to control rolling speed without needing to ride the brakes.
Looks like those hopper doors are giving you a tough time! I had the same problem and replaced the bearings the door slides on. Might be worth giving a shot!
Looking good! I use to train new drivers and you're shifting better than half of my students did after going through school and spending 4 weeks on the truck with me.
Re driving Big Red: When did you get your CDL? Was it hard? What did you have to do? Was there a test on air brake systems? Was it just a written test or did you have a road test too?
I drive an old Ford bucket truck with air brakes for a friend because he can't find anyone willing to even be a grunt for $250 a day much less try and learn anything. I love driving this top heavy worn out synchros hit my head on the ceiling bare bones machine especially for $175 for an hour of my time. So sad that I can't even give away tools to young people today, at least not where I currently live. Great job BTW and I'm glad your channel found me.
Hi Ryan. Your truck and trailer combo is a good looking outfit. Some one commented that you need to let up a little on the gas pedal when shifting so it doesn't bang so much but I would definitely be checking to see if the jaws on the fifth wheel are tight. Its common for older trucks to have slop in the fifth wheel but the jaws are adjustable. Just something to check.
New to the channel. Great video. So satisfying watching it dump out of the bottom. It goes really quick considering you work what 7 months to get it to that point maybe more. God bless.
Your doing a great job driving and shift, good job loading to,,if you can get an axle weight it will help give you a better idea of much more you can load. Great video !
Great video Ryan and look forward to your next installment of how farms work. Hope Jamie is ok don’t see much of her on your channel. Anyhow love you guys . Thanks again farm safe be safe
So, was the $4000-odd raised for charity from the sale of the remnant of the previous year's corn? It's a very generous offering from an individual operation.
Back breaking door slides or dollies they are the only thing that I probably greased to much - well done it's great to watch someone who loves what they do! Still wondering who does the drone footage and what kind are you using?
When loading when you burn fuel off your tractor gauge will be a lil lighter to so you will have to load it a lil heavier. I been hauling grain now a yr an a half an my gauge reading is still hit an miss for the tractor
I know I am going to catch all sort of HE double toothpicks for saying this but I love the Super 10 in our Volvo. I know I know but I am old and I love it. And Ryan you will never stop learning, you have come as many have said a long way!!! And please stop sending your rain down to us at least for a little while tell it to stop at Illinois no further east!!! Saw the animals paired off in twos heading south on I 65. LOL
Hey Ryan, would it be worth putting a permanent marker line at the corn level when loaded, going to then unload and then have a rough idea that that line is x weight? Might help you reach your 77 goal and you’ll know if your putting more in. Just a thought. You’re doing great and I love watching your videos 👍
That wouldn’t necessarily work because depending on the moisture the corn will have a different weight but it is a good idea. It might help just so he has a general idea though
Jeff Gixer yes but as Jasper Staats said it may give Ryan a bit more of an idea when he’s trying to gauge whether he’s putting more in or not. I never meant for it to be an absolute but more of a reference point
If you haul to the Gavilon in warren IL they will dump your trailer for you. After working on the Dubuque location i never noticed they don't do the same. Wonder why?
You are doing a GREAT JOB trucking man, if you can back that trailer in there without pulling forward and then back a couple of time, you can DRIVE TRUCK
With all the work you put in the truck and trailer, treat yourself, put on an electric tarp!! You have a very nice first semi 👍 Also, lubricate those traps!! I got a hernia watching you!
I know it’s not a huge thing but if you went out and got one of the cordless m18 Milwaukee 1/2” impact with over 1000 ft lbs or torque it would save you on your unloading time and it’s just nice to have around the farm anyways!
Thats not too bad actually considering it will save on brake wear and the safety factor of having that extra stopping power. Obviously thats a later down the road thing though. Have a good one!
Ryan, maybe you could add a bit of grease or something to those grain doors on the bottom of the trailer? It looks like they are very hard to open and close.
It was my mother’s job to climb up into the silo and break the clog up. I’m not sure if grandma knew grandpa was sending her in there, but farm life in 1940’s rural America was about getting the job done. I think grandpa’s heart was bad and this was when their hired farm hands were off fighting WW2. Mom said it was scary to feel the grain move under her feet while simultaneously struggling to keep from being buried. It’s no place for a person to be.
Great video, Ryan! It's relieving to know that we're not the only ones who have to actually get out of the truck to unroll the tarp! How close would you guess that you guys are to planting?
@@HowFarmsWork Absolutely. We're from Central IL and were fortunate enough to get about a fourth of our acres planted. It's rained about every day this week.
Ryan, there is something about the dynamics of 'flowable solids' (- corn, rice, avalanche, lahar, etc), that I love to watch. You could put up the whole video of the power-sweep and I'd watch it all. Also, the top-down video of the truck emptying was cool - I don't think I've ever seen that before. Cheers.
how many truck loads did you get once you stated the sweep .how much more are you making since you are doing the trucking per bushel ,and what does the ticket mean that you were reading
You are lucky in a way Ryan to start out with the "super 10" as your first transmission. Having started on the standard 9, 10 and 13 speed patterns i absolutely hated the super 10 when i had to drive the one we had in the fleet. It was tough to make the change. Your getting pretty good!
After truck and try is paid off ,next thing to buy is a used dump trailer( aka coal bucket). So you can run between field and bin with big red, used coal buckets are about the cost of 2 gravity wagon
Are you seeing the results of the benefits of trucking your goods yourself yet Ryan. Have you given Jamie a ride in the truck yet? Hope all is well. Great video Ryan thanks again my friend take care be safe.
It takes a lot of torque to move those doors, most of the cordless tools won't do it. I use them a lot and they are nice tools but not for this use. Plus you really don't want the open brushes and sparks around the dust from a grain bin. Bad things happen fast.
I was thinking the same thing I don't think them cordless impact wrenches will have enough torque to open them doors but I would definitely check in to put motors on them that would do it and then all you do is flick a switch
That is the instant torque rating, when the hammer first hits and not constant torque. Great to break loose bolts and tighten them but a constant strain kills them real quick.
