I also have fine, wavy locks and find that I desperately need more hard-hold definition as my hair grows longer. I’ve been LOVING layering curls blueberry bliss leave-in and Harry’s gel before plopping and then the curl talk mousse before diffusing. *chef’s kiss*
I am NOT a single styler person, I love experimenting with different combos!! Most of my fav combos are with different brands!! I tend to use a cream, and then 2 gels or a gel & foam. Sometimes 2 gels and a foam on top of curl cream! I just use less of each for every extra product I use. You can really tailor to your curls' needs! A lot of times I'm deciding what to use as I go. I ESPECIALLY like to use gels & foams that utilize different holding ingredients. I get the best longevity that way
My hair is mostly like Courtneys, I think. Fine, wavy. So new to this and want my wavys/curls to be defined softer, not crunchy, bouncier, not flat and stringy. Any tips? I used prose shampoo and conditioner (not silicone free, but next order will be), then I used upright styling first using a wide mouth combed hair in shower and gently squeezed/squished water out hair in shower. I then applied Aussie gel and plopped until 75% dry. I then used a clip in the front to lift roots for bangs. Once dry, I used a light body oil to scrunch the crunch as I am awaiting Righteous Roots RX in the mail. Things looked great for an hour but quickly felt flat and started getting stringy and greasy looking. Maybe the oil was wrong. Any other thoughts? Worried putting on a leave in conditioner before gel will weight my hair too much.
Curls Blueberry Bliss leave-in conditioner followed by Boucleme curl defining gel is my most magical product combo. In addition to giving my fine 2c/3a hair lovely and long-lasting results, they smell even better together than either one does on its own. The sweet blueberry muffin scent of the Blueberry Bliss combines with the citrusy tang of the Boucleme gel to create an absolutely heavenly aroma.
I just discovered my curls, thanks to my new stylist. He used, leave in conditioner, Bed Head mousse and Bed Head Contour cream. My curls were still perfect a week later even after being in the rain 2 days and not knowing I should protect my hair at night. So I am sticking to what works, although will be trying new combinations once I take off the training wheels!
LOVE this topic! I’m still newish to styling my waves, but so far I’ve liked Innersense I Create Volume lotion, Camille Rose Curl Maker Defining Gel, and Innersense I Creat Lift foam in that order. They work great on my fine wavy hair. The gel doesn’t have any protein but the Innersense products do, so I’ve got a good balance. And honestly, just the two Innersense products together are great too.
don't remember in which video you talked about it but the styling snot was a game changer for me! I finally got the hard hold that I needed! Thank you!
I have the fine wavy hair too and I love the Aussie Instant Freeze Gel. It actually works well alone for me, but yea I notice how well it works with a Mousse on top. Lately it's been Aussie Instant Freeze with Cake Mousse on top.
Omg I just got the cake mousse to try I love the Aussie gel and always plop it and top it with a mouse the Aussie instant freeze mousse is great and I use the curl talk but now I’m excited to try it with the cake but for me that’s my fave hair combo for sureeeee
I just took your advice, and used mousse AFTER gel, and LOVED it!!!! 😍 Thanks for always showing me something new to try. Also, loved your colab with Manes by Mell !!!
Love your video's and how you speak from the heart. I'm only a few months in and I've watched so many of your vides that have been SO helpful! It truly does feel like such a good way to connect with and care for my self and my naturally wavy hair! Thank you! Thank you!
I have thicker and dry higher porosity waves. (Think of Hermione) I can honestly say I have never really had fantastic results but maybe will see if these combos can work I actually have many of them. I either have not enough hold and dry fluff or gross product feeling that I need to wash it all out. Thanks Courtney you are giving me a new strategy!
I've enjoyed the Curls blueberry leave-in, the Curls gel from the same line, and the Curlsmith style fixer on top. I'm still pretty new but I like it :).
Courtney I must tell you something, so I've been trying this curly girl thing for a minute now several months naturally I have waves and some banana curls now and then and honestly when I started doing this they basically disappeared and it was just a head full of wonk I was so confused because my hair shouldn't be that damaged considering I've never bleached it and rarely used any hot tool. But I stuck out, took a break and recently tried again and tried doing my curl talk mousse after the gel and my goodness finally I had beautiful curls and waves still a bit wonk but I think I'm starting to get out of the transition stage and I just wanted to say thank you for all your help! ;-; all that work wasn't for nothing my scalp is also alot better
I know these are just about gels and mousse, but my best lineup so far has been curlsmith weightless air dry cream in the shower right after washing, NYM’s Kinky moves curl cream, then curlsmith hydro-Style Flexi jelly!! However, I totally agree that mousse then gel locks in the mousse too much and makes it more buildup-y-it also makes my hair seem more dry and stuck together/not voluminous? You really helped me out though! I think I will try the gel then mousse and maybe even step up to a thicker gel than the hydro flexi-I’ve had bad luck with harder hold in the past. Thank you for this video so much!
I wanted to like the instant freeze gel SO bad… nothing has made my hair flash dry worse 😬 OBSESSED with the curl talk mousse though. Maybe i ought to try the harrys gel next
I tend to layer them. As a general rule of thumb I tend to put the product with the less hold underneath the product with more hold. Of course the exception to this would be putting the gel underneath a mousse! 🤣🤷🏼♀️🤗
Thanks for these recs. I have those first two products. Want to try the combo of them now. I also have a couple of mousse products I seldom reach for, but now I have inspiration to consider how I can combine them with some of my other stylers.
I have a lot of fine, dry, hair that is much less curly when it’s short (which I’m fine with), and my go to product combo right now is Kinky Curly Knot today and Jessicurl spiralicious gel. Love that this combo is glycerin free, protein free, moisturizing, and very soft hold now that my hair is short and wavy instead of long and curly!
Which product combo would be good for cold weather that is high in humidity? It's foggy where I live. While the summers are bone dry with humidity as low as 10%, late fall and winter have around 70-80% humidity.
I feel the hormonal changes on hair. I was looking at pictures from after I had my oldest and it had gone from 3a/3b ringlets to waves like what you have in this video. I was shocked to see how much curl I lost at the time. After 3 more babies my hair is finally close to what it was before I had babies, still with more waves than before though. Now I’m feeling the postpartum hair loss. 😅
I just tried a new combo yesterday with incredible results. I used Curl Junkie's Curl Queen Smoothing gel, plopped, then gently scrunched in Flora and Curl's Sweet Hibiscus Volumizing foam on top. Diffused for a bit, then smasters technique with a small amount of the Treluxe Hi Definition gel. I have medium to fine hair, 2b -3a and high density and med-low porosity hair. My curls were very enhanced, shiny and springy, held up amazingly overnight, but not weighed down, wonky or greasy. My only complaint is how strong the fragrance of the Treluxe gel is. I can't stand heavy fragrance, which is a shame because I really loved it.
I love the Tre Luxe gel and I use it every day. Since watching you layer gels in a video, I tried layering it with the Curlsmith styling souffle and my hair lasted for 4 days. Since the Curlsmith styling souffle is too gloopy for me, I tried it yesterday with the Curlsmith Hydro Style Flex Jelly and judging from those results, I will be using this combo often because my hair loves it
How can you get your hair to last 4 days? I ask this because I sleep with it on a satin pillow and my hair pulled up into a pineapple. When I take it down it doesn’t lay right and I have to re-fresh the curls.
@@robynkwright my hair is too short now to pull up into a pineapple. I sleep on a silk pillow case and I don't move around a lot. My hair always lasts 4 days doing this.
Once in a while I will apply my gel then micro plop and add mousse or foam after that when most of the water has been removed. I get really good hair days from that. I have used several different combinations of products but the application method seems to work wonders. I have also used the DevaCurl B'Leave'In under gel b/c it is a great curl enhancer. Since DevaCurl changed all their formulas I don't know about it anymore so I want to try the Uncle Funky's Daughter Curly Magic and MopTop Curl Custard to see if they will sub for it. Thank you Courtney for another great video. You seem to be rolling right along and in the home stretch now. I hope you are feeling OK and everything is going well.
I noticed the same thing! I was in Ulta the other day checking out Deva curl and they seem to have changed almost everything. You are so kind! Baby girl and I are feeling pretty good!
As a guy with medium/long, fine wavy hair, I might have to look for that Harry's gel, if it has more of a men's smell. That is always the hard part for me, since I hate stuff with lots of fragrances, but most of the good products(at least that I have found) seem to be full of strong flower or fruit smells.
My favorite combo is uncle funkys curly magic with Innersense I create hold on top! My next favorite if I need a quick set that dries fast is the doux mousse def with Ouidad strong hold gel over it 🤌🏽
My fave combo for fall time: not your mothers leave in conditioner spray,Aussie volume spray,& Jessicurl Gelabration spray. Diffuse for a abt 5 minutes on low. Fine wavy hair is what I also have. My hair is so fine that I don’t put my hair up @ all overnight but I do use a satin pillowcase.
I like using the Ouidad coil infusion good shape definer gel with biolage styling gelee (the styling gelee works with like everything I've ever paired it with, and I've paired it with a LOT!) - on top of the twist by Ouidad weather up styling lotion. I also like the cake beauty curl cream (also lotion like, which I prefer) plus the rizos gel plus innersense I create lift volumizing foam. The innersense foam works great on top of everything, I swear! I have fine to medium textured curls, high porosity. (The front half is fine to baby fine around my face, the back half is closer to medium strands, with fine hairs sprinkled throughout)
I use the combination of Noughty Wave Hello shampoo(2 teaspoons), Curlsmith Hydro Crème Mask, as a conditioner (2 teaspoons), and then add 2 pumps of Noughty To The Rescue serum after it's dry. I don't use gels or leave ins, as my hair is so low porosity that they just sit on top making it feel producty. The serum gives just enough smooth & shine, without feeling like there's anything in my hair. I play with my hair alot & my man has his fingers my hair loads too. My hair is waist length, thick, corse, low porosity 2b wavy hair that is going through peri-menopause. It used to like more protein, but since the change I have to keep it much lower protein. I've found this combination works great. I used to use the Curlsmith Multi-Tasking Protein conditioner before I changed it to the Hydro Crème one. I find these products are so consentraited but gentle on my hair, that I don't need to use much at all. So even though they cost more than typical drugstore brands, they last me far longer, so it balences out. When I was much younger and using conditioners like garneir, pantene or trememme etc, I would have to use handfuls of the stuff, at least 2 tablespoons worth, so I'd plow through bottles of conditioner super fast.
I love using the Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner with the TréLuxe high definition gel and then finish with Aunt Jackie's Flaxseed Don't Shrink gel......my tailbone length curls have never looked better and my wash days last 6-7 days!
I tried Harry's gel and it made my hair flash dry 😢 I had never seen it do that before but it was wild. I wish it'd work for me because I hear good things! I like to use Aussie Instant Freeze and mousse since I have hair like your sister's! But recently I've been doing Kinky Curly Custard for moisture with Aussie Instant Freeze on top for hold. It's been working pretty well! I just ordered my first Curlsmith products and I'm so excited to try them! I wanted to get Treluxe while they were on sale too but I'm trying to have a little restraint 😂
The NYM curl talk made my hair gummy and didn't give enough hold and then Aussie gel made my scalp beyond itchy and the front patch of my hair fall out. I love the HE mousse the level 3 or 4 hold not much different. The HE mousse over UFD gel will be the greatest thing ever to me for my price range if my hair ever decides to curl again (hormones are everywhere)
Ditto on how impacts mental health ! Fine/wavy/low porosity-ditching dye and shining the silver and pepper. Hair is so much healthier and i agree its a transformation and acceptance of who i am. So what if im greying? I feel better in my skin(hair 🤗)!
Have you tried the Not Your Mother's Hard Hold Gel with the Not Your Mother's Mousse? I usually use the mousse first but may try the gel first next time. I find I get great curl definition and hold with these two products. The mousse is also my favorite mousse.
Thanks Courtney but I can't go curly in the winter, second day hair and product build up is too hard to deal with. My scalp cries out for brushing and too cold to wash every 2 days. Taking out the hot iron for 5 day hair! However you look great!
For combo 1&2 are you putting them in at the same time or doing first product at the end of your shower, plopping and then the 2nd before diffusing? Also, curious about the Curlsmith custard. I tried a different brand custard on my super fine, very dense, 2A hair but it just weighed itself straight and looked real greasy. Is the curlsmith more gel like/less likely to be heavy or greasy? Most leave-ins are too much for my hair. Thinking combo 2 & 3 might be more compatible but combo 1 sounds like such a widespread winner in the community!
I am a wavey hair lady as well, I am always fighting for moisture and combating frizz , my latest find is Maui Moisture coconut milk gel with the foam from that line .
What would you use for coarse, thick, healthy, wavy hair? Heavy products seem to weigh my hair down. I do use Olaplex 3 once a month. I also have to wash every three days.
Great video. In my hair, neither the Harry's nor the Innersense are anywhere close to hard hold, though. The Innersense gives me zero hold. I like the Harry's, but it's only medium hold for me.
My 2 favourite product cocktails are Camille Rose Coconut leave in with Curl Maker and Inahsi Rock Your Ringlets curl cream layered under the Coconut Avocado custard
I recently discovered and tried treluxe from both your channel and real life curly girl’s and although I love the treluxe curly wavy line I was so disappointed by the gel. It triggers my migraines. So for sensitive hair people, the mop top curly hair custard is my favorite substitute. FYI my profile pick is of me straightening my hair several years ago 😬probably should change the picture 😂
Here are some successful combos I’ve had: On days when I did a protein rich deep conditioner and I needed to avoid protein in my stylers so I wouldn’t flash dry- Bounce Curl Avocado and Rose Oil Curl Cream and Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel Topped with just a few sprays of Bounce Curl hair spray * when I use Bounce Curl Avocado and Rose Oil Curl Cream, I don’t usually use a leave in conditioner bc it’s SO MOISTURIZING Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel has good hold and it applies easily, smells nice, and it mixes well with every product I have used it well. Biolage Styling Gelee is very similar and Spiralicious. I love them both. They’re protein free. So if I want protein, then I will add my Curlsmith Multi-Tasking Conditioner (it works nicely as a leave in for me). My favorite curl Creams are the Bounce Curl one I mentioned before. I like the Living Proof Curl Definer (cream); it clumps my curls. My favorite leave in is TreLuxe Untie the Knot.
Experimented last night with the idea of wash now style later: inahsi leave in and curl Smith protein foam, but then threw on innersense whipped creme texturizer as a gel, which I’ve been struggling with how to use. Holy smokes. My low density, fine 2a-3a hair was so hydrated, with plump soft curls. The longevity for sleeping on it wasn’t horrible but not as good as I would get with a harder hold gel, but I was expecting that. Just excitied to find a use for the innersense cuz that stuff is $$$!
Helllllp! I already had the Not Your Mother's mousse so I decided to try layering that on top of my curlsmith styling soufflé (also, mind blown. Never even thought of putting a mousse on LAST! LOL!) It worked SO well for helping my waves/curls (my hair is pretty close to yours; it's baby fine, LP, wavy/curly. I'm about 8mo into curly hair land!) Last until day 2, but it made my hair FRIZZY. I tried layering the mousse under the soufflé just to see...same result and not as good of hold at all. I've been using the soufflé for awhile so I know that's not it. Any other recommendations on other mousses to try?! I'm still a learning on reading ingredient labels 😬
Oh, I also use the curls blueberry bliss leave in conditioner before my stylers. I'm trying to see if a little protein will help with hold too bc the rest of my wash day/styling is protein free (I over-proteinized my hair in the beginning and it freakedddd me out. Lol)
Have you tried… Aunt Jackie's Don't Shrink Flaxseed Elongating Curling Gel? For winter weather? I haven’t tried it but is has protein and no glycerin… I think 😂. If you’ve tried it, would love hear your thoughts. And amen, fearfully and wonderfully made 🙌🏽
Question off-topic of this video. It is popular for teen boys right now to perm their bangs> My son has wavy hair but can not find videos that are very good atm. I know your cousin dose videos is this soothing you could build him in providing. I do not think my son needs a perm but does not want to listen to "mom". Some of the videos I am finding are not so good for wavy hair and do not show the process well.
I'm still unclear of your application process. Are you layering these products (If so which product goes first) or are you emulsifying them together? The only one that was clear was the Aussie/NYM Mousse one.
So as a general rule I tend to put one on, and then the other on top. I usually start with a product that has less hold, and then put the harder hole product on top. I do not emulsify them together. Of course the exception to this is that I put the gel on first, then the mousse.
My combo is Uncle Funkys Curl Magic applied to wet hair (with a leave in to get the curl clumps forming) in shower. Carefully wrap my hair in a Perfect Haircare Towel so it's not dripping on me while I get dressed. Gently remove the access water from my hair with the towel while I Scrunch in the Not Your Mothers Curl Enhancing mousse. Plop while I do my makeup. Diffuse. So I guess for me it's really a 3 product combo of Leave-in, Curl Enhancer/Gel & Mousse for hold. I've recently added hairspray from Jessicurl & that has really extended the time I get from a wash day. I've tried hard hold gels & they don't work for me. I get less longevity not more & my hair feels dirty faster when I use it compared to mousse.
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney I was wrong! I read somewhere that it was being discontinued (can’t remember where) and after looking everywhere for it and not finding it I emailed Aussie to make sure and apparently it’s still being made, just not in my area- boo lol!

Literally the video I needed! Thank you 💖
I love using the Kinky Curly Knot Today leave-in conditioner with the TréLuxe high definition gel and then finish with Aunt Jackie's Flaxseed Don't Shrink gel......my tailbone length curls have never looked better and my wash days last 6-7 days!
Please continue to experiment. I love trying them.
Awe, thank you!
Thanks for sharing what works for you! I really love using Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Extra Hold Gel followed by Not Your Mother's Curl Talk Mouse.
Did you use the original curl talk or the hard hold?
Going to try the gel then mouse tip rn! Thank you for the tip.
Hope you like it! Let me know if it works. 😄
I've been loving the AG Recoil with the Curlsmith Hydro Flexi Jelly (sometimes I'll top it off with Ecoslay Orange Marmalade after micro-plopping)
Here are some successful combos I’ve had:
On days when I did a protein rich deep conditioner and I needed to avoid protein in my stylers so I wouldn’t flash dry-
Bounce Curl Avocado and Rose Oil Curl Cream and Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel
Topped with just a few sprays of Bounce Curl hair spray
* when I use Bounce Curl Avocado and Rose Oil Curl Cream, I don’t usually use a leave in conditioner bc it’s SO MOISTURIZING
Jessicurl Spiralicious Gel has good hold and it applies easily, smells nice, and it mixes well with every product I have used it well.
These sound like fantastic combo's! A lot of thought has gone into these! Love it!
Wonder results. Do you still use a leave in conditioner before applying your products combinations?
I find TIGI on the rebound plus After party works well. I really want to try blueberry bliss gel.
I love your channel!
I’ll use the innersence cream as a scrunch out the crunch. It adds extra hold BC of the honey in it and it smells nice! Little goes a long way though.
Would love a combo with kinky curly curling custard any recs?
Do you start diffusing right after putting the mousse on top of the gel?
I like using kinky curly knot today with LA Looks blue styling gel.
I find using mouse over gel to work amazing!
And amen, fearfully and wonderfully made 🙌🏽
I love Aussie Instant Freeze Gel-- Always gives me a great cast
Question off-topic of this video. It is popular for teen boys right now to perm their bangs> My son has wavy hair but can not find videos that are very good atm. I know your cousin dose videos is this soothing you could build him in providing. I do not think my son needs a perm but does not want to listen to "mom". Some of the videos I am finding are not so good for wavy hair and do not show the process well.
Last time I was in a salon I saw a young guy getting a perm
Kinky curly curling custard with almost anything else
Also Dove gel with almost anything else
I have the same issue when I put a mousse under the gel.
I’m so glad I’m not alone!
One day I will be able to master the Courtney hair flip. 😂
Buahaha!
I'm still unclear of your application process. Are you layering these products (If so which product goes first) or are you emulsifying them together? The only one that was clear was the Aussie/NYM Mousse one.
I think she layers all of them
So as a general rule I tend to put one on, and then the other on top. I usually start with a product that has less hold, and then put the harder hole product on top. I do not emulsify them together. Of course the exception to this is that I put the gel on first, then the mousse.
Xmas list check
I’m so upset that the Aussie instant freeze is being discontinued and Ill never get to try it 😩, it’s so hyped.
Oh my! Where did you see this at?
@@SwavyCurlyCourtney I was wrong! I read somewhere that it was being discontinued (can’t remember where) and after looking everywhere for it and not finding it I emailed Aussie to make sure and apparently it’s still being made, just not in my area- boo lol!
Does anybody suffer from their hair drying slower in the fall/winter? My hair has been taking forever to dry.
Would love to try these but many of the products contain glycerin and glycerin is not my friend, especially this time of year.
👍👏👏👏
Instant Freeze has been making a lot of people's hair fall out, I wouldn't recommend it
I'm first!
Yes!!
On the thumbnail you showed herbal essence mousse but then in your video you have not your mothers mousse. I just want to confirm. Have a great day.
