    Million thanks for the guide! I've looked into quite a few compression tuts. This one shows quite clearly how powerful this tool is. Awesome!! 👍

    This is the best explanation/reason for drum bus compression I’ve ever heard....and I’ve been watching tutorials and producing for 4 years.
    I was always confused about what they meant about “glueing” and how they accomplish it. What was the point in other words. Bc everyone seems to slam a fast attack on the buss and I’ve always wondered how that was any different than light limiting. Why not just put a limiter on the bus and then just have it barely tame the transients since that was all they were doing according to my limited knowledge.
    Limiting vs compression
    but this makes sense...I get what is trying to be accomplished now with drum bus compression.
    PS. I agree absolutely about the “auto makeup gain” setting. Their are very few plugins that do it OK. None are great. The only plugin I use it on from time to time is Fabfilter Pro Q2....and usually only to hear a unbiased representation of what I’m doing to the sound when I’m boosting frequencies. I turn it off afterward. Waves API 2500 is not even close with its auto makeup gain....and I really only use the Ableton compressor for sidechaining. The Glue compressor I use all the time...but I don’t even know if it has auto gain. If it does I deactivated it a long time ago and never even notice it

    Awesome Explanation!!I don't know if it was just me but The (Show Activity View) on the compressor was a big help for me to visualize how to set the attack & release time in order to leave the transient intact and let the compressor release just before the next signal, love your videos thanks for sharing your knowledge with us :)

    thank you, you explained it very clearly. Although the part where you used eq to even out the kick and the snare before the compressor is not clear to me. Wouldnt that affect the initial relationship between the kick an the snare that was mixed and sent to the bus?

  • @nickdijcj1
    @nickdijcj1 5 років тому

  • @gavmurph94

    thanks so much for that vid Will, really good explanation of actually creating groove or "pumping"....maybe a silly question for you or someone else here but just out of curiosity, for certain tracks like drums/perc did you only use bus compression, and leave the individual channels uncompressed, or did you compress each and then use a bus to gel them together? i have been doing the latter, but cant hear myself if it is "over" compressing.

    Does anyone else feel like they lose tansients/depth when grouping tracks in ableton? I find routing the outputs to a bus track and compressing it sounds better

    Hello there. Nice tutorial! Do you think in electronic bass music that it's good to use drum bus compression assuming that there is going to be a lot of limiting on the Master or is it counterproductive in some cases?

    is the make up gain trash quality on the glue compressor too? i tend to mix as i go with glue compression but with a very light touch and typically on that 50/50 grind #robdyrdek
    i'm not making any music that is submission worthy as of yet but if i ever do it would be nice to know if i should just skip the proprietary compression and just hit it with some quality bus compression once the arrangements are, more or less, done.
    if anyone has any feedback that would be appreciated! my ears aren't sensitive enough to notice subtle nuances when the compression is used very lightly.

    • @ncshuriken
      @ncshuriken 8 років тому +1

      I think the comps built into Ableton are easily enough to build & mix a track good enough to send out. So long as you can get a proper mix and nice levels going (101% a practice thing), thats pretty much all that matters, and both the comps in Ableton sound fine to me (even compared to Fabfilters Pro-C). If something doesn't hit you (or any of your music mates) as sounding "off", then I wouldn't stress much. Tiny nuances like that CAN be important, but save them until you've atleast done all your structure. Its easy to fall into that trap where you get distracted chasing a tiny little detail, then you end up completely losing your production flow and maybe changing something for the worse.
      Anyway Fabfilters Pro-C is probably a lot better in a lot of ways, but I still use Glue and/or the standard Comp in almost every track I've made since moving to Ableton (since V8) because I can still get em sounding sweet. For EQ I always stick to Fabfilter Pro-Q though, its a beauty! The only one for me LOL.

    • @digital_cratez9116
      @digital_cratez9116 8 років тому

      ncshuriken yeah i get great results from the stock Glue Compressor; the MB Compressor is dope too. I've concluded that if you can't get good results with these two you probably don't really know what you are doing. I do find the regular compressor to be pretty garbage tho.

    what's wrong with makeup gain? :/

    • @gabriel_moulin
      @gabriel_moulin 7 років тому

      beefdlo would like to know this as well

    • @Steelzuk
      @Steelzuk 7 років тому +1

      beefdlo its doesn't work very well in ableton, it increases makeup gain well above the desired level.

    • @VicDemise
      @VicDemise 7 років тому +1

      Well that's just silly.
      It only increases as much as YOU increase it, and since compression can reduce volume that's why it's there. Note that he added another plug-in to increase the gain- so it must be more a matter of the QUALITY of the make-up gain in Ableton's compressor plug-ins.
      I've realized that Ableton's audio isn't (always) pristine- particularly now that I'm using Harrison Mixbus 4
      (a very different tool- and in no way an alternative to Live, but just try running a finished stereo track, even an mp3 through Mixbus and you'll see how much better the underlying sound engine is- warmer fatter REALER even. I was shocked. (You can download the full demo version of it and see for yourself. It makes a hiss every ten or so seconds til you buy it- but it sounds GOOD!)
      It's now where ALL my mastering will be taking place.

    • @Steelzuk
      @Steelzuk 7 років тому +1

      Vic Demise the problem with it is it starts to increase gain before the audio has passed the threshold therefore increase gain too much

    Brilliant tutorials mate. Massive thank you from the musical paupers of the world. Has Ed Sheeran stolen all the music money? How are Little Mix more famous than Nine Inch Nails? Please someone tell me. And it's nice to see a tutorial from (I'm guessing here) a real musician rather than an IT expert...the same ones who are killing the art of songwriting beneath the Loop scandal. You can't build a palace with pre-made Lego. And you can't write songs using Loops. The Loops write the song. And the IT expert claims genius! Morons.
