- If you’re unsure whether you need to compress your mix, you’re probably thinking about things the wrong way. Join Gregory Scott, Kush Audio’s resident plugin and hardware designer, as he screws your head on straight and helps you to understand why you might - and might NOT - want to slap a compressor on your mix buss.

Why do you think that anyone wants to look at your stupid face? What are you, a failed actor or something?
Cheese ball.
I love my face! And let's be honest, cheese balls are DELICIOUS!
What's up with you Nolan Cook? Need more java?
Who raised you?? lol
I love that Kush pinned this comment. That's 'balls' right there. I have been using Kush' plugins for years, never seen or heard the person. What a cool cat! Philosophical, deep, honest, artistic, and pendantic in all the right ways.
Stupid haters are so funny
Lots of good youtube channes tells us how to move faders, but this one helps you to think before we move a fader, thats why i love it
well said 👍👍 so easy to get lost in the flow of making changes without stopping to think about where you're going!
Exactly, and even prior to thinking: paying attention to how it feels.
It’s true. I think the toughest part of mixing is listening before acting.
Yes, this is what is missing nowadays. Feeling it, not calculating or mixing with eyes.
Yeah. This channel gets to the core of the matter. Really happy I came across it.
The like button alone is not enough to express how much I enjoy these videos and how valuable they are to me.
I appreciate that, truly 😊
@@TheHouseofKushTV Hey Gregory ! You should check the traduction proposed automatically for this video !! It is totally CRAZY !! A youtube problem, a hacker ?! What it is??
I love these videos so much too
Such a shame You were forced to watch it.
I fully agree Jacob. G. S. is a multilevel B A D A S S, and a simple 👍 is not enough.
That one dislike was Mix With The Masters because you're stealing all their customers
Rightfully so, i might add, as a mix with the masters regretful subscriber.
Ha ha ha! Noice
@@sheetknows its free
@@MrDudumassa The youtube chanel is free, their platform is not.
Why is everything competition with you kids.
Hey man, I wanted to point out, from a dancer and producer standpoint. You, ARE TEACHING PEOPLE HOW TO BE ARTIST, which is much more important in my opinion than being skilled at a particular art. bravo. dance education needs to bend to creating artist rather than dancers
Really great point here. As a painter, I can relate as academics / schooling taught me much skill but what and why to make art -not a thing that came out of it really.
Your comment reminds me of Black Swan and how the main character was technically perfect but held back in her career because she was too emotionless
@@cory99998 man its so true its almost sickening lol
The only channel that I actually get excited about new episodes. Kush After Hours.
Absolutely
Thanks fake comment guy.
@@prototype8137 fake? I guess you don’t see good comments often.
I, once, accidentally put a buss compressor on a drum bus for texturing. Hours of tweaking, bounced the file and it was magical. The catch here, however is the compressor was all in bypass mode when I was tweaking. I was an idiot for sure. But learnt that sometimes your sound doesn't need anything. Placebo effect? I do not know. But this was one eye-opening experience for sure.
Thanks for your video, btw. My only go-to YT channel when it comes to audio post-processing. Love from India.
Great idea for a Placebo Compressor, one dial to turn, does nothing 😂 Gregory saying, “can you hear it, can you feeeeeeeeel it?” ✌🏼
"A comp in need is a friend indeed, a comp with weed is better" ?
do you know the story of the magical button in almost all the vintages studios back in the days? when they had a guy who think he knows ( without really knowing anything) asking "can you push the 2K's a bit ? or something like that...they were used to turne the magical button ( which doesn't do nothing of course, that the trick) ask the guy" tell me when you think it's ok?" and then, the guy was very very happy... :D it's all that matter....be happy with what you do
Compression... just a little for glue. If i really need more volume i also use saturation... it's easier on the ear drums
@@glennbob9315 Ahah so true, this thing we all keep under radar "ye Im good you cant hear the difference but I do, oh wait it is bypassed" (generally we hide the fact that we noticed it is bypassed right ?), shame on us. Or "what the... I am on 20:1 and it does nothing this plugin sux" bypass off.
Aside bus compression, parallel compression on drums have been the gold key for me to achieve more pro mixing.
My main improvements actually came from working with good drummers, lol. And then yes, parallel compression!
as a firm believer in understanding the "whys" rather than the "whats", I really appreciate you treating your audience as critical thinking humans. thank you for what you do.
The best audio teacher on the internet. Captivating and easy to understand. Brilliant explanations.
“Odds are its probably there before you can hear it.” So true. Great advice 😎
Kush. You should do a Live Stream Q&A one of these days! I would definitely tune in. Thanks for the insights.
Every time I hear the intro music I'm expecting Barry White's voice to come in at any minute.
Intro músic, sexiest... Love the vibe
“You sexy, SEXY freak..”
So True!!
Same ha ha
Hahahahaha, same here.
This channel is everything to me right now. The House of Kush is all I need in 2021.
minimalistic living, i must say
Another great lesson: "Compressor on mixbus to create movement (enhance or deeper or change the groove) " - Thanks Mr.Gregory Scott!!!!! Oh Captain, My Captain!!!!!
I don't know why exactly, but for mixing-related content, I find that I understand the most when it's just a chill talk and explanation of the subject without showing video of the DAW graphics doing its thing. This is exactly why this channel and SonicScoop with Justin Colletti are my favorite. In that order.
I love that you're not humming and rambling over an Ableton window. You are actually just explaining how to think about this stuff. Super helpful for a newbie like me.
Ermergherd, the way you put it each time gives me a new view and approach on something I've been doing half my life
thats not sarcastic btw, These are some of the best insights anyone has ever given me on this tooic
Awesome, glad to hear it!
I think you could do a video on how to make a cabbage and onion smoothie and Id still give it a thumbs up.
You’re giving every intern what they really wanted to learn while they were grinding out 16 hour shifts doing food runs and watching the cameras. 😂
"Is it necessary" - "This doesn't really make sense to me unless we contextualize it."
Thank you! I see this kind of question all the time and the first thing I want to ask is, "Necessary" - for what? It may be necessary for one thing but not another. It depends on what you are trying to accomplish and whether this is one potential solution.
UBK making the mysteries of audio production understandable for all, and all without having to demo it. "Mixing is SEXY baby!"
You know? .... What I find helpful is, as we listen to the teacher teach... A great form of follow up to all that IS being taught, can often lie in the teachers own material...
Sneaky little devil is a great format for you to say: " Ahhhhh... That's what Gregory means, when he was talking about 'X'"...
You'll be rewarded to actually 'hear' many of his topic's applications-
Thank you again Gregory for your work-
Super helpful*
👏🏻👑
I'm honoured that you took out time to explain more on that question. Obviously your perception is really advanced ( I mean what do you expect from someone who makes mixing tools). I've always looked at mixbus compression as a tool to control dynamics, but I will try and approach it differently next time to see how it affects the rythm and feel of the whole mix. Thanks 🙏
I wish there was like an ultra subscribe button or something... Gregory Scott is the man, every video has the perfect amount of wisdom and is very well delivered and the concepts are all crystal clearly explained, gets me thinking on the right brain path for success, all thumbs up to Kush After Hours
I gotta tell you, in 30 years in Boston, NY and DC, with about 500 sessions under my belt on 24 track analog, I never once heard anyone use the term "glue" when mixing. Not even once. The whole idea of "gluey compression" I think is to correct artifacts that result from mixing ITB with no console. The console itself is a bus and does some natural compression, coloration and dynamics just by passing audio though it. That being said, I totally agree with everything you said and if you need compression, use it. Just don't fall into the standard UA-cam mentality of "Do This On Every Mix" and stuff like "bus everything" because One Size Does Not Fit All.
Ha! I'll bet nobody said 'warmth' or 'saturation' either 😛
@@TheHouseofKushTV lol! You got that right! Sometimes we couldn't get away from the saturation. I was running Ampex 456 on a Studer A80 at +9. I never bothered looking at the meters. I just listened for the needles clicking on the pegs, lol.
Thank you so much Mr. Scott!! Woot!
So much knowledge condensed!!
love u man, the amount of knowledge dropped is pure gold!
Thank you for doing this 🙏

I can't get enough of this channel.
It truly is unbelievably helpful.
Thank you so much
The fine points of compression can be so geeky. I love it!
Discovered this channel this morning. These are not just lessons in audio production, this is also a masterclass in how to teach. As a music production teacher myself, I will benefit from both without a shadow of a doubt.
Your voice relaxes me
Thank you
I have never subscribed this fast on any channel! Amazing content! Already learned a lot by watching 2 videos 🔥🔥
Awesome as always Gregory. I love the way you always put ears and feeling before reaching and tweaking.

Boss explanation !
You have an amazing mind and a truly generous spirit Gregory. Rock on mate. PK.
Fantastic video! Very informative
I have Sneaky Little Devils in my playlist. And every time one of your songs come on, it immediately takes me to a whole other dimension from all the other mixes on the playlist. I think that's saying a lot for your artistry. Great work sir.
