    I appreciate the straightforward, no-nonsense video. One question regarding the detents; How does a person determine the correct lengths? Thank you.

    • @GearBoxVideo
      @GearBoxVideo  Рік тому +2

      There are many types of rail combinations, so if you are working on 1 transmission you are going to have two interlocks and three detents. Some are actually the same length some are different. But simple math will simply show you that if you only have two interlocks and three detents then it shouldn't be hard to figure out which is which.

    One detail always do is double check that your detents are in correctly by shifting into a gear then check if the other shift lever is locked out into neutral position. Then vice-versa. If the opposite shift lever still moves its possible engage 3rd and 1st gear at same time. Locking out the whole transmission...only way to get the car moving is getting underneath with wrench (hammer sometimes) and put minimum one rail in neutral position. Easy just to double check when it's on the bench... just wished I had utube when I was a kid. Great job on explaining assembly

    Paul, great vid series. I have a 4sp Toploader from a 70 mustang. I’m dropping the tranny soon, so fully expecting to replace all components. Is that 12,000th play you created in what i was thinking was the 3rd gear assembly and taking the “hub” down by 10,000th going to need to be done on all rebuilds? Or is it all a matter of where you get your Taiwanese parts from ? Or was that a shaft issue? Sounded like from what you said it has been a long standing problem for that gear getting enough oil. Again, wondering if that is having to be done in most cases. Thanks!!

    Hi Paul thanks for these videos and taking the time to reply to my last question. I am rebuilding a couple of Mustang gearboxes for my son who is building a race car here in the UK. One of the gearboxes is original from a ‘64 mustang while the other has suffered a catastrophic blow up leaving the 3/4 slider, 3rd gear and second gear all welded to the main shaft which I am guessing may have been caused by insufficient end flat on the gear. My question is regarding 3rd gear. The original box which is all ok has a3rd gear which has no holes drilled in it to let oil through whereas the one in the blown up box has some as does the gear you have fitted in you video. Can you tell me if this is a modification you have done or are later 3rd gears manufactured this way. I have access to a milling machine and could make the holes I think using a solid carbide cutter. Thanks again for taking the trouble to produce these videos I have fond them most helpful

      The most important thing to due is add slots on the thrust surface, off-center. Then add a small valley in the mainshaft journal to allow oil to pool and circulate. The spirol grooves act more like wipers. Also use an oil like Royal Purple Max gear lube. This seems to have worked best for me . Where in the UK are you?
