Glass tile installed on a kitchen backsplash using a high polymer content thinset suitable for glass tile. The glass tile in this video is a mosaic tile and is not transparent, even though full coverage of the thinset on the back of the tile is desirable, it is not critical. This glass tile is mosaic tile and has an opaque baking so the color of the tile is not dependent on the complete coverage of thinset on the tile back, it is still necessary to use a white thinset that is suitable for this purpose. Mastic should never be used for any kind of glass tile, nor should a lower or inferior grade of thinset be used. . I usually use "Tec Superflex". It is also important that the thinset used is one that has the same color across multiple units, to insure color consistency when installing large projects that require more than one bag of thinset. Using a lower quality thinset can cause variation in color and shading of the glass tile, and also result in tiles not adhering to the mortar. This particular size tile required the use of a 3/16" v-notched trowel. This glass tile has some exposed edges of the glass tile at the end of the counter top. The tiles that had not been cut could be set in place "as is", but the tile that were cut at those edges had to be polished to approximate the factory edge to achieve a pleasant consistent finished edge. If polishing the edges of the tile is not possible, then a schluter metal trim of the right color and size could be used, or some other type of transition glass tile is also a possibility. The tile should be allowed to set at the very least over night before grouting. An unsanded grout was used mixed with "Boost" grout additive to achieve a highly stain resistant grout. Some glass tiles will be scratched if a sanded grout is used, in which case an unsanded grout should used. The proceeding is intended as a guide line and not complete instructions on how to install mosaic glass tile, complete installation instructions are usually supplied with the tile at the time of purchase, or may be included in the tile packaging.

to save time on the corners you can cut a full sheet in half. use each half as the srarter for the same corner. the you dont have to work with small detatched tiles.
Ohhhh... Great Idea!!!
Thank you.
Very great idea. Then just work from the corner out which is the way I think it should be done anyhow.
OMG what a great tip!
Sal, thanks for all of your videos. I've watched most of your tile installs before I do my own. Tons of tips and tricks your expertise provides. Now I'm not so nervous about doing this myself. I hope when I'm done it looks like a pro like you did it!
I myself am a tiler in the Uk and you sir, tiled that kitchen like a boss.
Your videos have been extremely helpful during my DIY bathroom remodel. I am about to layout some glass tiles on the wall for about the sink. Thank you for all the tips and how to's! It's a life saver!
The only video where the installer is using shims to straighten out his job. Excellent guy to hire
OMG, the fast motion is so funny when you run into the other room & come back. Imagine if you could really move that fast, or can you, hmmm...
Thanks for making this video, I am going to try to tackle a glass tile project tomorrow.
gorgeous job buddy. quick and efficient. loved the beater board sound effects and the ledger is clever...
Wow Mr. Sal.
Your vids are a pure pleasure to watch.
Your professionalism during installation shows that you want the best possible
outcome for your customers.
Once again, my hats off to you Sir.
Absolutely beautiful work.
Thank you, my first priority is always that my customers are happy.
Nice job! Amazing how the grout changes the entire look of the tile and gives it that "finished" feel. Thanks for a great video! My only suggestion is to replace those old yellowed light switches, plugs and plates with nice clean white ones. :)
Thanks Sal. I needed some pointers for my backsplash. Well done!!!
Fantastic tip with the matching corner tile
I just started laying tile and starting mosaics I'm an apprentice and I love it awesome video
Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to share this with us. I particularly liked your method of the inside 90 degree turn in the corner. I agree, it looks better with the small pieces re-installed after the cut. I viewed another video where they merely butted the up together. Not good looking at all.
Hello from Saturday August 21, 2021. 148k subscribers!!! the best tile guy right here folks. Thanks Sal!
Beautiful work. I do not even like back splashes but love this one.

Great video! Looking forward to doing a back splash thanks to your video! Nice work- looks fantastic.
Best how to video I've seen! I loved the fast motion and how detailed it was. I think I will now hire it done, but I know more about the process. You are amazing, and this was NOT boring. Thank you!
That is why I do the videos, some will "say I can do that", others will say "better get a pro". In each case you will have more knowledge of the process that can only help you make a better decision.
This was a great help. It felt like you were there as I did it lol! Thank you for sharing.
Amazing. I need a man in my life that likes to do this kind of stuff

This is great thanks
great job!
Amazing !
Good neat job well done
Very Good Job Sal! You gave me confidence as a woman to do this on my own!! Great step by step instructions!! I have one question though. When doing the corners, do you leave a space between the ending tiles and the new tiles being placed on the adjacent wall? Or do you place them as close together as possible? Do you I use spacers at that point like you video showed? Thanks!!
Leave a small space for caulk.
great fast motion wow nice
It looks so pretty when your done! I just attended a workshop and learned to install a back splash, but I have a few questions they didn't address. Would you mind answering then, and thank you in advance. :) 1) What did you use to patch the wall (I think you said @ 2:00, but I couldn't hear it)? 2 (3 questions in 1) What was the process of removing the outlet covers and taping them? Was it that simple or more complicated? When you screw the outlet covers back on, do they just fit? 3) Did you caulk the space between the tile and where it meets the counter top by the sink? if so, do you have a video on caulking? Again, thanks in advance for your answers.
Hey Sal, thank you for another great video. I'm getting ready to install the same tile. What size V-Notch trowel were you using? Thanks
Showed everything I need to know after just being given exactly the same glass tiles. Many, many thanks for this video.
tanks for the video. ....
Me gusta cuando el vídeo va rápido y sólo se detiene a explicar.. Así no pierde mucho tiempo😜
That is why I do it.
Thank you, very helpful. How do you polish the tile ends?
Perfecto job 🇵🇷💪👍PR
😊👍
Very Nice ♡
nice work
Love this video Sal...I didn't see an answer to several people asking about leaving a gap between the tile and counter top (apologies if I missed it) but I don't think you actually need a gap in this case. You just need to seal the bottom edge of the tile with caulk for water proofing like you did in the video. The gap people are referring to is actually known as an "expansion gap" which I don't think applies for this sheet style tile. Correct me if I'm wrong however.
+K Brown In some cases it is absolutely critical, but with this type of tile i usually don't bother.
Can you put the tile directly on top of the countertop back or do you need to leave a space for caulking. Thanks. Great Video.
How did you polish the little pieces??
Love the video. Loved the sounds the fas motion troweling and tamping made
exelent video
OH MY Gosh... I am so glad I watched this video before I decided to tackle my (bad) project.
I too have ugly GLUE on a (very thin) wall on my 1972 Vintage Travel Trailer...
I can not get the glue off without hurting the thin board behind it, (that is why I wanted to
know the name of the tool you use at the beginning of this video... GREAT IDEA... but what
I would have skipped would have been putting on the "Skim Coat" .... You have saved me a
lot of work and worry...
Thank you so much for this great video...
NOTE: I hand paint custom tiles and I would have hated putting up the hand painted tiles only to have done a
bad job... .... I'm not used to installing them... just painting them... LOL.
Thank you again... I really enjoyed watching this video...
Judi Christopher that tools is called a multi-tool, pretty much a dremel with vibrating saw attachments
@@Ricky-xv4yc
Thank you so much for your reply.
Judi Christopher no problem at all. Been installing tile for years but I have to say it’s not hard and I’ve had several homeowners that love to watch and learn a few things. It’s a fun career but also a fun hobby if you’re a homeowner
@@Ricky-xv4yc
I agree...
I have a question for you... If I put up a backsplash in a RV... can I use a flexible grout so it does not crack? Is there such a thing LOL
really nice job sal..
Cool i liked
awesome
good one
good job! tedious work
Looks great, but wondering why you left the wall plug plates on when you were grouting?
Hey Sal, great video, very useful! Tks a lot!
However, I'd like to know how did you cut the glass tile?
Thks again!
Wet saw with a Diamond blade for cutting glass.
Thanks Sal! We removed a backsplash of 4" tiles last week that removed a lot of paper and had to piece in a small patch of drywall to repair a hole. Removed all the old mastic and was advised to put a coating of Gardz on everything since we accidentally did the patch with regular joint compound and mesh tape. Should we be good to set glass tile mosaics at this point. Everything is flat.
can't really say because i have no way of seeing it in person, but it sounds like you are good to go.
Sal: Loved the video, it's not as easy as everyone thinks to do it right. I'm about to install glass tile with textured stone in it. What happens to the textured stone when I grout? Thanks again.
My guess it that you should probably seal the tile before you grout it, if the stone part of you tile has a lot of voids in it, they will be filled by the grout and will have an entirely different look when grouted.
Sal very nice job….did you space the tile off the counter to allow for caulk ?
Beautiful job!
Do you use thinset mortor for patching holes and adhesive for the glass tiles? Also why the blue tape in between the tiles?
I did and the blue tape is covering the outlets.
Did you use a spacer offset for the outlet plugs? How did you acheive a flush mount?
