How to install a glass mosaic tile backsplash Parts 1,2 and 3

    Glass tile installed on a kitchen backsplash using a high polymer content thinset suitable for glass tile. The glass tile in this video is a mosaic tile and is not transparent, even though full coverage of the thinset on the back of the tile is desirable, it is not critical. This glass tile is mosaic tile and has an opaque baking so the color of the tile is not dependent on the complete coverage of thinset on the tile back, it is still necessary to use a white thinset that is suitable for this purpose. Mastic should never be used for any kind of glass tile, nor should a lower or inferior grade of thinset be used. . I usually use "Tec Superflex". It is also important that the thinset used is one that has the same color across multiple units, to insure color consistency when installing large projects that require more than one bag of thinset. Using a lower quality thinset can cause variation in color and shading of the glass tile, and also result in tiles not adhering to the mortar. This particular size tile required the use of a 3/16" v-notched trowel. This glass tile has some exposed edges of the glass tile at the end of the counter top. The tiles that had not been cut could be set in place "as is", but the tile that were cut at those edges had to be polished to approximate the factory edge to achieve a pleasant consistent finished edge. If polishing the edges of the tile is not possible, then a schluter metal trim of the right color and size could be used, or some other type of transition glass tile is also a possibility. The tile should be allowed to set at the very least over night before grouting. An unsanded grout was used mixed with "Boost" grout additive to achieve a highly stain resistant grout. Some glass tiles will be scratched if a sanded grout is used, in which case an unsanded grout should used. The proceeding is intended as a guide line and not complete instructions on how to install mosaic glass tile, complete installation instructions are usually supplied with the tile at the time of purchase, or may be included in the tile packaging.

    to save time on the corners you can cut a full sheet in half. use each half as the srarter for the same corner. the you dont have to work with small detatched tiles.

    Nice job! Amazing how the grout changes the entire look of the tile and gives it that "finished" feel. Thanks for a great video! My only suggestion is to replace those old yellowed light switches, plugs and plates with nice clean white ones. :)

    Thanks so much for taking the time and effort to share this with us. I particularly liked your method of the inside 90 degree turn in the corner. I agree, it looks better with the small pieces re-installed after the cut. I viewed another video where they merely butted the up together. Not good looking at all.

    Very Good Job Sal! You gave me confidence as a woman to do this on my own!! Great step by step instructions!! I have one question though. When doing the corners, do you leave a space between the ending tiles and the new tiles being placed on the adjacent wall? Or do you place them as close together as possible? Do you I use spacers at that point like you video showed? Thanks!!

    It looks so pretty when your done! I just attended a workshop and learned to install a back splash, but I have a few questions they didn't address. Would you mind answering then, and thank you in advance. :) 1) What did you use to patch the wall (I think you said @ 2:00, but I couldn't hear it)? 2 (3 questions in 1) What was the process of removing the outlet covers and taping them? Was it that simple or more complicated? When you screw the outlet covers back on, do they just fit? 3) Did you caulk the space between the tile and where it meets the counter top by the sink? if so, do you have a video on caulking? Again, thanks in advance for your answers.

    Love this video Sal...I didn't see an answer to several people asking about leaving a gap between the tile and counter top (apologies if I missed it) but I don't think you actually need a gap in this case. You just need to seal the bottom edge of the tile with caulk for water proofing like you did in the video. The gap people are referring to is actually known as an "expansion gap" which I don't think applies for this sheet style tile. Correct me if I'm wrong however.

    Thanks Sal! We removed a backsplash of 4" tiles last week that removed a lot of paper and had to piece in a small patch of drywall to repair a hole. Removed all the old mastic and was advised to put a coating of Gardz on everything since we accidentally did the patch with regular joint compound and mesh tape. Should we be good to set glass tile mosaics at this point. Everything is flat.

    • @SalDiBlasi
      @SalDiBlasi  10 років тому

      My guess it that you should probably seal the tile before you grout it, if the stone part of you tile has a lot of voids in it, they will be filled by the grout and will have an entirely different look when grouted.
