Zodiac has such a phenomenal cast and is so well written and directed. Its very dark and legitimately creepy but extremely watchable. Every time I come across this movie I get sucked in and watch it again. Its absolutely fascinating.
Yeah, a real period piece showing the Bay Area in the early 1970's, with a sinister atmosphere. Far superior to the other films on this list.
Monster is my favorite serial killer movie of all time. Charlize Theron transforms into the killer and gives a career defining performance. Rebecca's narration is flawless as always. ❤

“The Deliberate Stranger” came out while I was in high school and so started my fascination with true crime…. Especially Ted Bundy! I could never look at Mark Harmon the same again! Hands down my favorite serial killer movie.

Made for tv movie, The stranger beside me, was terrifying. To think that your close friend comforts you, about your daughter being safe from the killer and turning up to be the killer.
"Citizen X" is worth a look with an excellent cast. Also shows how frustrating it must have been for an honest Russian police officer?
It kind pissed me off that she used the made for TV remark about it. It wasn't made for network TV. This was a HBO production so their hands weren't tied by the censors. They chose to focus on the investigator and allowed our imaginations to sicken us.

To Catch A Killer is by far my favorite on the list. Brian Dennehy did an outstanding job and the realism he brought to the role is what makes it truly disturbing and terrifying in the real world rather than horror movie sense. if you have never seen it and want about as real a depiction of the character/behavior of Gacy as you will ever see outside the real interviews with the actual killer, this movie is the one to watch.
Helter Skelter was amazing. I was young when i first saw it and it stuck with me. It is hard to find these days since it is a tv movie instead of a film release.

wolf creek was based off of the murders that ivan milat and bradley murdoch commited in australia for murdering backpackers... would've been nice to see wolf creek somewhere in the list
ending of henry portrait of serial killer is the most bone-chilling scene I've ever seen, director did great job not to show actual murder, once car stops and henry comes out, you just know what happened and those background screams gives you goosebumps

Ed Gein was a real monster. Robert Block wrote the novel Psycho about Gein’s terrible deeds. Hitchcock read the book and the rest is cinematic history. Gein turned human skin into clothing. “Buffalo Bill” in The Silence of the Lambs. A similar take is “Leatherface” in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
For me, it is about the performer who is portraying the killer in the events. What are very frightening are where "The Deliberate Stranger" Ted Bundy and "The Killer Clown" John Wayne Gacy are concerned mainly because every single actor who portrayed either of them really are both testaments to the actors range but also very frightening in how it becomes through their performances very clear how both of them got away with their crimes for as long as they did. Mark Harmon as Bundy and Brian Dennohey as Gacy, though, are the standards all others have to meet, as they have portrayed so many great and human (and even lovable) normal characters their range in their portrayals of two of the most loathsome excuses of "men" that every besmirched the face of humanity.
However, Steve Railsback in his portrayal as Charlie Manson in the 1976 *_Helter Skelter_* is something I find chilling even today. The fact that I have seen real footage of Manson from interviews and footage of his appeals, and have to really praise how effortlessly Railsback showed us all (and still shows us all) that it is a very good thing Charlie died in prison.
But, lastly, it cannot be left unsaid, however, that while Matt Smith's portrayal was fantastic, it needs to be said that *_Charlie Says_* tries too hard (and fails) to "vindicate" on any level Susan, Linda or Patricia. All three of them were more than willing, and the saying is true" *_People willing to be convinced of absurdities are more than willing to commit atrocities._* What always is forgotten in the story is that Susan Atkins, before falling in with Charlie, was an active participant in the occult, and was a member of Anton LaVey's Church of Satan. Susan especially was already more than willing to kill, and leaving out the details like that doesn't do the facts justice.

_Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile_ is one movie I remember and recommend.
Misha Collins was so good in Karla, but he HATED that movie.

The Vanishing (1988) is the most creepiest Serial Killer movie I have ever seen, that one freaks me out without shedding any drop of blood or a scene of violence, those who haven't seen it should watch it..

To me, this was 917 murders and 1 suicide. The movie, Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones. Great flick starring Powers Booth as Jones. Outstanding performance, won an Emmy.
Jim Jones wasn't a serial killer. He was responsible for the deaths of multiple people one time. Serial killers repeat a murder over and over more than one time.
I had been reading true crime since I was 14 but The Deliberate Stranger was in every home back in the day. It seemed like a sequel to what had been on the news after he was caught.
I think it's time to put a moratorium on movies about Ted Bundy. There is nothing else that needs to be said about that monster. Deliberate Stranger is probably the best of the movies because it's based on a book by Ann Rule who knew him.
I remember watching To Catch a Killer about Gacy. Brian Dennehy was scary. My younger brother was around 22 at the time, and it really bothered him. He found Brian Dennehy's portrayal as Gacy so disturbing that he couldn't watch anything else the actor was in.
Also, I'm from Southern Ontario and lived not far from where Bernardo and Homolka murdered her sister, Tammy, Leslie Mahaffey, and Kristen French. I don't believe Karla was a victim or an abused wife. She WAS absolutely her a$$hole husband's partner. All these years later, the deal she got infuriates people.
In case you're interested, she's now living near Montreal, Quebec. She's remarried, and God help them, she has kids.
That deal with Karla is infuriating! They should've made it with the provision that if she was found to have been involved in the killings on her own at all it was off. Those tapes should've made that deal null & void. The prosecutor dropped the ball big time!
The Stranger Beside Me was the Ann Rule book--The Deliberate Stranger was based off the book by columnist Richard Larson, who knew Bundy via social circles in WA State politics.

The Deliberate Stranger was the best Bundy account. I know mojo is more keen on newer versions tho. It was big to me along with Fatal Vision. Both were great true crime depictions.
Rosemary West was just as cruel and reprehensible as her evil husband.
I know that this is off subject, but I’ve seen horror films and mysteries where the body is hidden for some time and the narrative ignores the fact that bodies smell after a while. I would like to see a top ten on that. Sisters with Margot Kidder, where the killer hid the body in a sofa bed, is an example of such films
I guess not about a real-life killer....but Sean Penn's " The Pledge" starring Nicholson was chilling and remarkable.
Add a couple more, James Woods as Carl Panzram in Journal of Murder and The Young Poisoner's Handbook about mass killer Graham Young.

My Friend Dahmer and Ted Bundy should have been a bit higher in my opinion. Ross Lynch’s performance as Dahmer was brilliant and so was Michael Reilly Burke’s performance was too, the execution scene terrified me, it looked like he was really being electrocuted

Love these movies to see through the eyes of these people are really interesting. Shows everyone around the world what monsters they were. All these innocent victims dying for their pleasure is unthinkable.
The frozen ground - with John Cusack… phenomenal film, although heartbreaking 💔 because seeing Cusack play a villain absolutely threw me off… but he absolutely nailed the part!!!

I feel the same about Henry. I have been disturbed by that movie for 30+ years... didn't think that it was remembered until I saw it at #3. The video camera scene and the broken down car scene are haunting to this day

I watched Helter Skelter at a slumber party. Out of all the horror movies we watched that night, that's the one that really got to me. When I got home, I made sure all the doors and windows were locked.
I was 14 in 1976 when Helter Skelter movie came out. He was the best Charles Manson ever made. They had great movies almost each night.

Zodiac is definitely the best one. Helter Skelter was realistic and one of the books I read, I think after the movie. The Frozen Ground I feel sadly inspired other killers, I think like the suspected Gilgo Beach Killer. It said it was inspired by a movie I haven't seen yet, The Most Dangerous Game. I think that premise has shown up in several other movies. It was mentioned in Zodiac too.
I can only hope, if not anything else, it is so important to learn and practice self-defense practices. I don't like relying on guns because they require loading and distance to be safe. Too many young people are buying prison sentences using them the wrong way. Not that one shouldn't have one. Just in a surprise attack, you need to be able to outsmart someone who often plans their crimes.
One thing about these kinds of criminals, like the wonderful Thomas Harris taught us, first they covet their victims. Or create a narrative to follow and obsess over. Why when attacked, you need to be able to make good use of resources. Fear of the unknown is a victims most common enemy. Be careful. Understand the mindset of a huge portion of our world. Teach children because they have become many fiends preferred victims.
Bullying has been an age old problem. Schools run by cowards and the uninterested do not deal with it and get fired. Usually not until children die. Ignoring it? When so many own guns and can aquire them quite easily? Has brought us to this.
Zodiac is amazing but Memories Of Murder is one of the best movies period

Renner was so creepy in Dahmer, but I couldn’t get past how attractive he also was. I still call him sexy Dahmer to this day.

A few of these movies I hated. The greatest movie on this list to me is Citizen X. I think of what it must have felt like to be that officer and to be so frustrated. If only people like Chikatilo were done like that at the end of the movie.

You neglected to add what should have been *at least* a top ten entry on this list - M, reputedly based on Peter Kurten (though Peter Lorre claimed to have used several serial killers as inspiration) in Lorre's first starring role, directed and written by German master Fritz Lang. It was an early example of serial killer horror that required no blood to convey it's tense story and dialog.

Looking for a crime thriller from the 90's / early 2000s. Can't remember the title nor the actor's names. There were like two serial killers who, by the end, kidnap the main (male) detective/private investigator and take him hostage in a big house or sth. The detective manages to subdue one of the kidnappers (was a bid older than the other, younger one), and finally free himself.
Would be nice if anyone has a clue what flick it could be ?
Perhaps it was a made-for-tv production but my guess is kinda on a blockbuster.
