Perfect example of how history remembers you. No one remembers the man who sucked up to the kings, and now the church of England and the catholic church both recognize sir Thomas more. That's true history

@@stonem0013wosley waa just a yes man and he even tried going over the pope to get what he wanted. That's just power drunk. No one goes over a pope or a king.and no the court mostly despised wosley because he waa not originally of noble blood and un did alot pf court ways to ease Henry and then got himself in trouble for abusing that very same problem.

Sir Thomas More (7 February 1478 - 6 July 1535), venerated in the Catholic Church as Saint Thomas More, was an English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman, and noted Renaissance humanist.
He was also a councillor to Henry VIII, and Lord High Chancellor of England from October 1529 to 16 May 1532.
He wrote Utopia, published in 1516, about the political system of an imaginary, ideal island nation.
More opposed the Protestant Reformation, in particular the theology of Martin Luther and William Tyndale.
More also opposed the king's separation from the Catholic Church, refusing to acknowledge Henry as Supreme Head of the Church of England and the annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
After refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy, he was convicted of treason and beheaded.
Of his execution, he was reported to have said: "I die the King's good servant, but God's first."
Pope Pius XI canonised More in 1935 as a martyr.
Pope John Paul II in 2000 declared him the "heavenly Patron of Statesmen and Politicians".
Since 1980, the Church of England has remembered More liturgically as a Reformation martyr.
The Soviet Union honoured him for the purportedly communist attitude toward property rights expressed in Utopia.

I dunno… I’m inclined to agree with Hilary Mantel on this. The whole cause of the problem was Katherine of Aragon. She knew what the stakes were and could have had a dignified retirement. I think Henry would have treated her well like he did with Anne of Cleves. But Katherine’s pride could not be reasoned with. It ruined the lives of many: Her daughter, Anne Boleyn who waited too long to start having children, Wolsey and Thomas More. I get the principle. But this great matter was not the hill I would have died on. You didn’t have to have the cynicism of Wolsey to understand that fending off another civil war for lack of a male heir was in everyone’s best interests. Plus, Royal divorces were not uncommon. Eleanor of Acquitaine comes to mind. Not only did she divorce the king of France but she didn’t go to a convent either. Katherine could have issued whatever demand she wanted and gotten it. Did More even reason with Henry that Mary could have been a legitimate successor? I’m guessing no.
Well, he did himself in then.

Katherine of Aragon is very likely a saint in heaven though she has never been formally canonized. She was a true Pious heroine, a champion for the sanctity of marriage. None of this had to do with pride. Do your research and read a book. Just as St Thomas More Expresses in this scene, she was dealing in a higher element, a spiritual element. She had to answer to God alone. They all did. We all will. Henry the 8th annulment has led to countless heretical sex called Protestant churches, where people regularly get divorced, where same-sex marriages are permitted and celebrated, where so much evil resides. That is not God's church. Katherine stood up for God and his church and the Covenant of holy matrimony. What do you stand for?

    • @delirous8
      @delirous8 Рік тому +2

There was more at stake cause of Katherine's status, she was a child of Spain and it was very powerful country during that time period. Marriages was not just about a spiritual conscious, piety or lust, it was also about economics and avoiding wars.

But it wasn’t just about Catherine…any divorce would negatively affect her daughter, Mary.
Had Catherine accepted either divorce or annulment, Mary’s position would be precarious. She would no longer be a princess, just Lady Mary, and her prospects in life would be diminished.
Accepting the divorce may also have put Mary at risk, as Mary was still in the line of succession, and any plots against the current king/queen often rallies around an alternate claimant, even if they had no knowledge or part in the plot (Elizabeth was imprisoned for exactly this, by Mary). Royals have been known to do away with alternate claimants for this reason.
And I am not sure about this, but any divorce may have made Mary illegitimate, or close to it - a large stigma at the time.
And WE know that Henry was generous to Anne of Cleeves (sort of), but that hadn’t happened yet…Catherine didn’t know that.
For all she would know, Henry could have double-crossed any divorced wives, and she knew Henry was fine with disregarding vows if he felt he needed to or if they stood in his way.

First, sorry my bad english. I'm not a native speaker ^^'
To be fair, for most people today it is hard to understand how strongly religious people back in that time were. He believed he would not only damn his own soul, but also the souls of his family if he hadn't made those decisions. Yes, they had to endure poverty because of his decisions. But I think many people would rather live in poverty and find salvation in the afterlife than otherwise. I really think he tought his decisions were the right ones. Not only for him, but for his family too. As far as I know, they also believed that letting heretics follow their "false ways", they would also not only damn the heretics, but their own souls as well. It could also lead to your own excommunication, which was horrible for most people back than. I don't want to say that his actions where right and burning people is absolutly cruel. But maybe, with that in mind, his actions were a little bit more understandable.

That is why in the series Thomas More idolized Queen Catherine of Aragon...because her devotion to the laws of the Catholic Church were likewise unyielding and her piety was as profuse as his own
