Actually, they designed a software for that, called ALICE to make an isolated animation to interact its surroundings, To control the falling and landing zombies realistically, the crowd team used PAPI, MPC’s physic API, which is well-integrated in the pipeline so that PAPI and ALICE are bridged together. This allows them to create behaviours and animations in the crowd engine which could then also be used to drive the physics simulations at the same time.
Some zombies are real, and soon put into CGI, like the prequel flips, the real actors are made into CGI art, soon their models are colored the same way, and then BAM! A model that can do a lot of things.

There are no zombies in I Am Legend, instead there are vampires called Darkseekers, which, unlike zombies, fear the sun, are very strong, can build or copy traps, can easily climb walls without taking safety precautions, and, of course, can love each other, as in the Director's Cut edition of I Am Legend, the female Darkseeker reunited with her father.
