I went on a 2-week trip to Sicily on a Rick Steves tour. We were only allowed to bring a carry-on bag, which initially seemed impossible. I brought 2 pairs of shoes in addition to the ones on my feet. It was very liberating to travel so minimally. I'll never travel with multiple suitcases again. No one ever says I wished I packed more.

Good choice to prioritise shoes over clothes. It's easy to wash a T shirt or buy an extra but if your sandals break or start to rub its hard to replace them.

I hate being made to do anything. I would have hated that. Let ME choose what I want to bring. What about room to bring home things you buy there? If you are in a small bag already, you can't do that. Two bottoms, three shirts is about all you can put into carry on luggage

Just came back yesterday from Charleston, SC . I am a very experienced traveler. Over 78 countries , 300 cities in 6 continents . Yet I still made a novice mistake . Charleston is a very sophisticated and affluent city, so I wanted to look classy , elegant like those Southern belles . Long story short , I had to ditch my classy sandals and buy RUBBER BIRKENSTOCKS on King St. I couldn’t stop laughing at myself . This time lesson learned . 😅

Due to knowing my style, having a wardrobe of classic pieces, and careful planning I was able to travel to the Antipodes for 32 days in an underseat bag and a LePliage large tote. 17 pieces, including 3 pairs of footwear (boots, sleek loafers, tennis trainers). Added 2 hats, assorted undergarments, and a swim suit. Your channel is a lovely counterpoint to consumption and demonstrates the usefulness of having an elevated sense of presentation - from making a good first impression to cultivating confidence to making travel packing easier. Classic style, for the win.

Thank you for this and in an ideal world one could pack a few pieces, but clothing is not just there to keep you warm, let alone appropriately dressed for every occasion, clothing is there to make you happy and to express your mood😊 and on my last trip I brought 10 pairs of shoes and all had an outing…choose a limited colour palette (good advice) save all the dry cleaning plastic and cover each item individually, nothing will crease and therefore don’t worry about packing synthetics. Unless you are on a backpacking trip, fill that case (or two) and don’t feel guilty. 😅

I’ve been travelling light (carry-on baggage) for over 25 years now. I always start with the climate/weather, the activities I’ll be doing and the formality of the destination(s). I take between 2 and 4 pairs of shoes which can include sneakers, hiking shoes, casual sandals and a dressy sandal/boot. A jacket or cardigan, a compact raincoat and bathers plus sarong/cover-up if warm weather. Always a hat or cap. Around 4-6 bottoms, 4-8 tops all as lightweight as possible and maybe a dress. I include something comfortable for travel/exercise/sleep. Colours are mainly dark (black, navy, charcoal, denim) with patterns/bolder colours on either my tops or bottoms only so everything mixes and matches but isn’t boring. I may take a thermal top, opaque tights, gloves, scarf if needed. White and cream never work for me, they get too dirty and stained - patterns or dark neutrals are more forgiving. I also have a tiny travel towel if needed. I have a small bag of cosmetics (small sizes of moisturiser, foundation, concealer stick, eye shadow, mascara, eye liner, 2-3 lipsticks) and two small bags of toiletries and medical items. Jewellery is my rings, gold bangle, gold chain necklace, 2 -3 pairs of earrings, but leave most at home if a high theft risk destination. A small bag of chargers/cables/plugs plus my e-reader, phone and ipad. One handbag which is my personal item. My makeup purse is super cute and could double as an evening purse. I take a bar of laundry soap in a ziplock bag so I can wash clothes in the sink if needed or spot-clean any marks. If travelling for a long time I buy some toiletries at my destination. I use two small packing cubes for my clothes which keeps my luggage perfectly organised. This system works really well for me, but of course it’s a personal thing.

I traveled through Italy for over two weeks, and shared one medium (read: small) sized suitcase with my husband (all true) and hanging bag. Two pairs of good neutral comfortable shoes (nice loafers), navy, beige, black and white clothes that could mix and match. Of course the jacket and dress for any occasion. It was wonderful, easy, and we made smooth transitions to our destinations, hassle free. I would never wear a sloppy outfit to the airport, let alone anywhere else. Comfort can be stylish as well. And full disclosure, I was a flight attendant for 20 years, so a little experience goes a long way . :)

Gemma, another great one. I’m a 3-4 shoe person. Flip flops (thongs),slides (mules), loafer, espadrille. One in each corner of luggage. Most difficult is travelling from very cold to hot climate as you have major temperature shift. Yes!! Dress in layers or get one of those coats that folds and rolls down to size of an umbrella. They’re genius.

Very helpful video! My down fall is my toiletries…my fine thin hair needs several styling products and appliances to look nice. I try to wear hats as much as possible, but for some occasions a hat isn’t a good choice.

I have had fine thin hair for most of my life until it became very thin and made me uncomfortable. So I started wearing wigs. Not the wig for the whole head, but a thing called "toppers" that just cover the top 1/3 of the head with a mesh that the hair is attached to and flows down. I wear one with bangs, it's very cute and realistic, with chin-length hair, and I wear it back often. All I'm saying is that it has made my life so much easier, the hair looks great, and I feel more confident.

One caution about strappy sandals. I once wore a pair of strappy sandals on a trip to New York City. I thought they’d be perfect because they were nearly flat and quite comfortable. I didn’t take into account two things. First, I walked so much the first few days that one of the straps snapped from the sole due to repeated flexing making them unwearable. Second, the street were so dirty and filled with trash that I was constantly trying to avoid trash touching my bare feet not to mention dangerous items like needles. I went to a nearby department store and purchased a pair of trainers with hard rubber toe caps. Suddenly sightseeing became fun again. After the trip, I threw them away because they were so dirty.

I always take at least one pair of clogs - Dansko or Sanita - they are heavy shoes, so I wear them on the plane. Sometimes I take a second pair in the suitcase. I wear those shoes at work as I am on my feet all day. Now I am so used to the support they provide with their special sole that I can't wear regular flats. This winter I got a pair of Dansko Chelsea boots - they are handy as walking shoes and are fashionable, apparently. So, closed-toe clogs in the winter and sandals in the summer, plus sneakers for the gym. I like to walk around for hours when I am on vacation. I had to buy a pair of low heels last time because I wore a dress that evening, they were not expensive.

I travel a lot for work so I have a pair of smart flats for lots of airport walking, but smart enough under trousers for work. Some days, I travel in a pair of smart trainers, especially if a non-work day, and can use those in the gym as well. When travelling personally, I have either very comfortable loafers/boat shoes or smart trainers for lots of walking, a pair of sandals, and possibly another pair of shoes that can dress up/down. I also agree with carrying a scarf, and making jewellery work to change an outfit.

My personal tip is to use travel containers for shampoo/cleaser/lotions etc. I stick to only three nail colors - red/nude/transparent so normally I can take red + one of the rest. I try to have miniatures of spf and other products if possible. I pack only prescribed or those medications that Im sure cannot be bought where Im travelling to. As for the hairdryer its normally in a hotel (not the best one, but its there). When I plan my outfits I also choose which jewellery to pack with it, I opt for classic options like perls or statement earing that will go well with many of my outfits

I’m planning a trip to France ( French River cruise for 2 week) and Northern Italy (2 was ) Mid march to mid April 2024, and am determined to travel light and stylishly co ordinated, with a capsule wardrobe, hence watching your video. We live in Australia so our clothing options seem to less choices and we are going into summer here so spring essentials are hard to find now. I’m only taking 3 pair of shoes and went Shopping for some good walking shoes. I settled on a very expensive pair of Ecco trainers that are also waterproof in black with white sole. But I didn’t realise they also come in white ( wasn’t told and weren’t on the shelf at purchase) until too late and now think white would have been much better, and worried that the black won’t look as stylish, ( although they are quite stylish for trainers and have already had comments on them, so I’m trying to decide on what works with them as I will be wearing these the most. I’d like a pair of loafers or moccasin type shoe with sketcher comfort that aren’t sketchers so more stylish, and a pair of nude sling back flats but both of these seem hard to find down here. I’m also looking for a waterproof trench coat - the only options there are through Amazon and most of them don’t even have size guides to work out your size which is very frustrating.. I do have a good navy rain jacket that I had intented to take but felt with the black shoes, and black pants (part of the capsule) it just wouldn’t look stylish so thought a camel trench coat. Also intend only taking my cross body travel handbag, a carryall/backpack and maybe a small clutch. I’ve been researching for weeks and finding it’s not as easy as it seems.
I’m planning on 3 pants - black, jeans (so far only comfy ones I can find are mid wash) and can’t decide on colour of the 3rd pair (tending to a lighter grey or beige or camel but that’s not as durable for constant wear/washing.
White linen shirt, mid blue and grey silk shirt, red, white and black fine print silk shirt and feel am beginning to think although lovely and light those silk shirts might be gendering other choices.
A very light weight puffer (packs down into pocket) a black Dress and possibly a mid blue denim Jacket .That’s about as far as I’ve got so far.
    Any suggestions??

Great tips, Gemma, especially about wearing comfortable shoes. I wear blazers a lot, but for travel, I’ll wear one of my knit ones, they’re so much more comfortable and spring back better from folding, etc. They’re also washable, so I don’t have to worry about getting dry cleaning done on my trip if one gets a spot or grimy. I have a 40-year old pair of low-wedge leather sandals that are more comfortable than sneakers, so I reserve them for my summer travel shoes. They still look ok for daytime walking and touring, but won’t take many more rebuildings by the cobbler, so I save them for when I really need them. I like to wear sneakers for the flight, and pack my day sandals and a pair of comfy mid-heeled gold sandals for evenings. I have folding silk travel slippers for inside hotel rooms, but they have a thin rubber sole that allows me to wear them on a quick ice or lobby run, too. I take two solid-color, very simple, silk dresses for fancy evenings and a variety of fashion jewelry and silk scarves/wraps to change up the looks, these accessories don’t weigh much or take up much space. Silk, especially in knits, is a great fabric for travel, it doesn’t need frequent washing, dries fast and doesn’t wrinkle much. I’ve always regretted the woven cotton and linen items I’ve taken because I have to spend so much time ironing them, or send them out, which takes at least 3 to 4 days to receive back, often a week.

I'm finding 3-4 pairs of shoes is the right amount for myself -- I always wear a "travel shoe" (comfy yet polished, good tread, easy to get on and off at the airport,) and bring the following:
    1. Something that can double up as a slipper/poolside shoe
    2. A shoe for the weather -- if it's going to rain, it may be an ankle boot. If it's a warmer climate, it's usually a sandal
    3. A running-around shoe, like loafers, sneakers, or boat shoes

We always travel carry-on only so 3 pairs of shoes is all I bring. I wear my heaviest/bulkiest shoes on the plane. I have problem feet so I bring sturdy walking shoes, comfortable yet supportive sneakers, and a pair of sandals to give my feet a much needed break after all of the sightseeing. As for non-wrinkly clothing I don't like polyester so I bring all natural breathable fabrics. I may look wrinkled but I'm cool and comfy.

I only take 2 pairs of shoes on holiday, I wear one; flat ballerina or loafer while travelling and pack the other eg. Sandals for summer, boot for winter etc. I ALWAYS wear long sleeves and bottoms when travelling because you don’t know what has been on the seats before you and it can get cool. I also now pack a pashmina for travel even in the summer after an experience on an overcrowded night train with children in a FREEZING air conditioned compartment, I had to, in the dark pull out random t. Shirts from our luggage to cover my children that were trying to sleep, a pashmina is super lightweight, warm and stylish not to mention makes a great temporary blanket.

....I take certain footwear, depending on where I'll be traveling to, and how long I'll be there. The last trip I took I took my Cowgirl Boots , trainers, an extra pair of heels ,and an extra pair of heeled boots. and the shoes. I was wearing for my trip, but I drove... I do not fly, I do not like Air Travel. It was at the end of February, still quite chilly most places . The trip was 3 weeks or so in duration, and I took what I needed.
Definitely nice leggings, 1 pair of black jeans, a nice dress ( if needed) ; a few lightweight tunic sweaters, and actually had to take a down ski jacket, it was quite cold in Kansas and a few other places.

Haven't done a lot of flying in recent years and I find that it's quite tempting to bring too much when not having to go through the airport. As a general rule, I pack no more than two pairs of shoes, plus a pair of slides for lounge and beach/pool. I can always make do with those. I thoughtfully select the shoes I wear for travel, so that they can also work with other outfits I pack. That gives me three pairs of shoes, as you recommend. For travel to colder places, there’s always at least one pair of boots, and slipper socks instead of slides. Thanks for the great video!

Hi! The best light-weight layers are with cashmere and silk! On 7-15 day trips I have a roll-aboard and smaller bag, plus a neck or waist document holder. Silk-knit tops and bottoms can be used for sleep and layers under light-weight knit pants. Cashmere sweaters , scarf,
add to layers! Coordinated layers, as you said, made fall days in France, Italy, Ireland etc. comfortable.

My packing depends on whether we’re doing a road trip or traveling by plane. For a road trip I’ll take as many pairs of shoes as I want. We’re going on a road trip this weekend and I already have about 6 pairs of shoes planned. I have a special, convenient travel bag just for shoes. I usually even take multiple pairs of shoes when not traveling, just when I leave the house in the mornings since I often don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing for the next several hours. A simple coffee run can turn into a hike, a trip to the movies, a walk in the park, etc.

On the flip side, I wear clogs all the time. That's right, those shoes with the heavy soles that nurses and chefs wear. Why? I'm on my feet all day at work like they are. But guess what! Clogs come in many varieties - there's the Mary Janes, so cute! And many sandals, and some boots, as well as the standard "professional" style. Presently I have about 8 pairs, plus I recently bought a pair of wooden Swedish clogs for work! I'm addicted to them.

So you would not take linen on holidays? 🙂A summer holiday in Australia needs linen. A holiday in the UK needs careful thought about warm but not bulky weatherproof outerwear to survive that unpredictable rain and wind that will cut through you🙂

Shoes on trips: 2 pair. On rare occasions 3. I enjoyed this topic. I know packing cubes are popular. I don't understand how packing in these are helpful. You are adding more to your suitcase. You have to open multiple cubes to get your clothes for the day. Is there a good source that explains why these are a good idea?

    • @abic67
      @abic67 Рік тому +2

I love packing cubes. I’m not sure about saving space, but for me I find that you can pack multiple cubes on top of each other and then can be squished down when zipping up the suitcase. Also, for me, I use it more for the organizational aspect. I really like that I can put tops in one cube and pants in other. So for example, some days I know I really want to wear a pair of pants but unsure about the top due to weather, etc. so I just simply open up the cube with the tops and browse easily to find the top I want, compared to trying to browse through all my clothes to find a top.

Always, always wear my trainers at the airport. They take up too much space but are always necessary to have. I always take 1 pair of pumps for dressy occasions plus my wedge heel espadrilles if I am going someplace warmer. Finally, 2 pairs of flats that are capable of being dressed up/down. and thong sandals that I use primarily as "bedroom slippers" but in the event of blisters can save the day. Everything in my suitcase is preplanned to mix and match; I never have any sort of "one-of" that doesn't go with anything else. Normally, it follows black-white-red or navy-white-emerald and most of it in solid colors. The real key is the scarves I take that can completely alter anything to dress up/down.
