I've spent hours, literally hours in this past week reading all about Shalimar and its various versions as this scent has recently intrigued me. I wish I had discovered this video sooner! You are so informative and articulate about this fragrance! This video is everything I needed 💙 Also, your enormous 😍 6 oz bottle reminds me of that scene in Belle de Jour where Catherine Deneuve knocks that Shalimar over on the powder room floor accidentally and it shatters. She looks so despondent afterward as anyone would be to lose that much Shalimar!

Same with Diorissimo from dior and obsession for men from calvin klein. There are so many vintage versions and formulations. Its crazy. My friend bought a bottle of musc ravageur because he smelled it once at a Perfumery in Vienna and was under the spell of this expensive Perfume for years. And now his Version is the tamed Tiger. No funkyness or magic smell to detect anymore. Only a not bad smelling perfume.

I first found Shalimar in 1977, when I was 24 college graduate, married, and a Real Estate Broker. Heavenly to me. It was my only scent other than gardening compost, lol.
When my third daughter was 5 years old in 1990, she got a chair and into my bottle. I was so afraid for her if she ingested it. Emergency care-the poison center told me how poisonous it is.
So I quit wearing perfumes-none in my home.
    Now I really miss it.
Studying with you to see if it is still the same or will I be disappointed.
Thank you! I found JOY to not be at all as I remembered.

I LOVE Shalimar and Guerlain. First tried Shalimar when I was 21, and it was the parfum. That began my obsession with amber and resinous perfumes. Since the parfum was too expensive for me, I purchased the Shalimar body oil for years, and I can't say enough about how wonderful it was and how much I miss it. Different from the EDP & cologne. It would last forever on my skin, I loved smelling it all day & got so many compliments - it was the closest I could get to the actual parfum, but like most bath & body oils, there was a softnes, but with richness & depth - heavenly. Unfortunately, I don't think you can get the parfum in the USA anymore, either.

Oh god, I love it too, and agree with your speculation as to why this is such a polarizing perfume on the, 'But do you actually _like_ it?' level. Also, about it coming off as very modern and unisex.
Ditto on this being a perfume more likely to appeal to mature or experienced palates. When I was first starting out in perfume explorations many years ago, I didn't care much for Shalimar. Now, I find it gorgeous and singularly, deeply satisfying.
I don't know how to get across how this weird impression I have of it is not a diss in the least, haha (far from it!), but something about the dense smoky richness of the EDP brings to my mind pepperoni. :-)

I have recently discovered Shalimar and it was love at first sniff! I currently own the modern EDP, vintage 80’s era EDC and 60’s era parfum. I love them all. My only complaint is that the modern EDP is sharp in the opening and doesn’t last. The parfum in contrast is a beast...you have to shower that one off. The vintage EDC is light, long lasting and has a smooth citrus opening - just beautiful!

I have recently become obsessed with Shalimar and have totally gone down the rabbit hole trying to find out everything I can about every iteration. I don't think I've ever fallen in love with a perfume faster!
I started off with the modern edp and then came across the perfum de toilette from the 80s for dirt cheap at a thrift shop and it's so so amazing! It's really hard to find anything out about this concentration though!
I don't know how accurate this is, but one of the few things I read said this is an edp and that's just how Guerlain referred to the edp at the time until the early 90s, if anyone knows any more about it I would love to know!
I think this version gets overlooked a lot partially due to the unclear naming of the concentration but also it comes in a rather unassuming and dated looking bottle, but she's really lovely. I got 3 mini bottles for $1.99. I love the thrift store!
I also have the watch bottle of the vintage edc and love that one too. It's really a bargain all things considered.
Someday I hope to have the extrait (modern and vintage) but I've already gone off the deep end with Shalimar and will probably wait and save my pennies a little before I go in on that one.

I read this like I was discovering Tut’s tomb! Thank you for this incredible post. You found multiple bottles of Shalimar at the thrift store!!! Isn’t it so interesting and fun to experience the differences between them? The older ones get so resinous and ridiculously gorgeous, but I also adore the newer formulations! The bottles are also stunning in different ways. Just curious, have you tried any of the newer flankers (Soufflé, etc) and if so, do you like them, or are they too much of a departure?
The original turns 100 in a few months and I want to throw it a party!

Hi there and thank you for the kind + interesting posts! I would say these two are only similar in that there is a smoky note. In Shalimar it is much smokier (to my nose). I noticed that you didn’t include the EDT/Eau De Toilette.
Is there any particular reason for that ?
I am trying to find a couple of Shalimar fragrances for my mother and am trying to learn all I can to choose from EDT, EDP, EDC, and Souffle The initial and Extrait are out of my budget for her birthday present, so it’s down to these.
I may get her 2 if I can pick from the EDT,EDP, and EDC and also dependent upon whether she likes the Soufflé.
Will appreciate your help, thank you!
EDIT: She had a bottle of Eau De Cologne, which I believe she loved, but she is also familiar with the EDT, due to it being in her family for generations. She likely wouldn’t know the difference between them unless she was aware of the categorical differences.
