I have used mine twice for self defense in 8.5 years of security and corrections, both times I never had to use it, but it got their attention that I wasn't screwing around.
Back scratcher, and very useful for when I park slightly too far away from the automatic car wash in my patrol car and can’t quite reach the button to select the wash I want
As a security guard certified to carry expandable batons (I'm not American & you must be certified to carry batons in my country) as well as someone with a background in Filipino Martial Arts (FMA)/Kali/Arnis/Escrima I think the main reason why the batons are almost useless in a "combative" situation is because of how police & security are taught to use them. The methods taught are designed for the old solid batons such as the wooden one you showed in the video or even an old truncheon where the weight is at the striking end and not in the handle like it is with modern expandable batons. Expandable batons being hollow & tapering down to the striking end are extremely light weight at the point of impact so you require speed, accuracy and multiple impacts in quick succession like is seen/taught in Kali and not a single hard strike like we are taught to do with the baton. Batons are not the issue, they are extremely effective when combined with Kali....the problem is the techniques taught. You wouldn't teach someone to drive an automatic car and then give them a manual truck license but that's effectively what is happening with expandable batons....they are teaching us to use one thing but giving us something with completely different characteristics without teaching us how to recognize weapon characteristics and how to adapt to the weapon. This is also why I think Kali is a better system to teach in relation to batons because we don't learn from the point of view of "This is this X weapon and it's used like this" of "This is Y weapon and it's used like this", we learn that the angles of attack remain the same regardless of the weapon and we allow the weapon to tell us how to us it, i.e.: - Anything with an edge will cut/lacerate - Any flat or round surface (such as a baton, 2x4 or a wall) uses impact - Anything with a point will stab We also allow the weight of the weapon and the center of gravity/balance point to tell us how it wants to move, i.e.: - Light weight like a baton is good for speed - Heavy is good for power strikes - Higher center of gravity/balance point is good for hacking - Lower center of gravity/balance point is good for slashing The problem is the techniques not the weapon.
You absolutely nailed it! Though, I wouldn't say they teach the wrong techniques out of ignorance. We are taught the wrong techniques out of fear of liability. The proper, most effective batons are "scary and barbaric." But, those light weight pieces of crap just seem friendlier. Nevermind the fact that there are videos of cops the globe over needing to smack the hell out of people with those batons lile its a Saturday morning cartoon. Indeed, the Kali techniques focus on speed, accuracy, and repitition. All three things have terrible public optics in law enforcement... just like hitting someone one time with a real baton amd watching them crumple to the floor has bad optics. By switching to these batons, it completely discourages any officer from using that force option (politically and optically this is a good thing). Instead, officers are left with hand-to-hand techniques, and Taser (another ineffective piece of multi-million dollar garbage). Hell, look back on the lies surrounding "Hands-up, Don't Shoot." The manufacturers came in droves with new less lethals designed to practically replqce firearms. My favorite was one that looked like a clown nose being launched out of your pistol. A real gem. Pretty soon all law enforcement and security will be issued "Safe Space" blankets as an intermediate device. If things escalate, officers can then transition to their pillows for a rough and tumble pillow fight. At least the political and public optics are bearable.
Triton AT-4, used it once, the drunk wandered off... "That's not fair man" was his complaint. Saved us both from a potential bad situation. Security/Sweden
In the UK some forces are actually swapping the Arnold public order baton for a 26 Inch Bonowi Camlock expandable baton, or in favour of a 26 inch Monadnock autolock!
There’s something to be said for the old flat sap! Where used properly and not against the head! Good for close quarters and gaining compliance with “subtlety”! I’ve seen your previous video and agree about misuse, but some use them properly (where allowed)
Thanks for the free field training. I've been carrying and using short batons (around one foot long, often field expedient) since 1973--and once I disarmed a nunchuck-wielding kid. I was lucky--nunchucks are usually more dangerous for the user than the victim. I began using telescoping batons in the 1990s. But there's always something more to learn even with training and experience under my belt. Ever try to wake a combat vet from a deep sleep? Nudging a foot or even a shoulder with a long stick works--be respectful, be gentle, and be ready for your stick to go flying. How many homeless men are combat vets with substance abuse issues and PTSD? When you have to wake them from their nap in an alley, the stick gives you safety.
It's an emergency tool, I learned that from you Tommy. I do get the urge to scratch my back with it. Probably the best emergency tool to use for that purpose.
"Wrestling is great until you try to wrestle more than one guy" is very true. Unless you can do some crazy ninja stuff and invert everyone's joints in as many seconds as there are people trying to get you, you're probably just going to have one guy in a hold while the other kicks you in the face.
I have a question Sir. When those in a Special Operations Team rescue a hostage from a building, when they get him out of the building alive, do they hand the hostage over to the normal cops or do they themselves go all the way to the station with him? If they hand him over, what rank does the police officer who takes charge of the hostage have? I'm trying to write a short-story about cops, therefore I would want to get the details right.
Tommy. Can we get another duty flashlight uses video?? And maybe where you think flashlight technology will go in 5 10 years.. what duty like are you rocking now? I have a fenix tk 20r 2.0
Sir, I am into armed security and executive Protection. In my opinion using a very minimalistic gear vest lvl3a, duty gun 3 magazines flash light. I personally believe that carrying handcuffs or baton should not be helpful just because I don’t work in a law enforcement capacity. I believe that if it gets to use a baton I just go hand to hand or just use my firearm. What are your thoughts? Maybe I may might need to get idk 🤷🏻♂️
great attention getter & for us short people, to get things off high shelves...Or unscrew it and ask if they wanna see you put a 9" nail in each one of their eyelids...
They do, I prefer old friction lock ASP batons with the Raptor rubber grip another brand that wabbles and has an awkward grip is the similar impact weapon by Manadnock
Batons are good as they are always there when i taser loses battery or OC runs out. They are good for Aggressive loose dogs or breaking windows. Or propping door open 😂
Baton is useless if you don't know how to use it. The striking technique has to be in perfect shape, which unfortunately is not the case for the majority of police officers.

Why have I never thought of this? I always struggle at the auto wash lol.
My baton is mostly used as a door knocker and back scratcher lol.
I can't think of a time where I've used mine for something other than a door knocker.
I work in a hospital, I've found it's good for reaching overhead switches to reset automatic doors lol
Same. I've carried my Triton for six years and only ever used it for scratching my back and pushing water out of our quayside marquees.
@@charlesig7098practice with it much?
I like how you mentioned mostly. I actually swing mine too.

Just yell Reveille Reveille really loud you might be amazed.
@@Laugh1ngboy Tried that and when it failed, I had to stick to a long stick!

My baton is used mainly for swinging and pretending I’m hitting a home run when I’m bored talking with other officers
I Recently got a ASP Agent A50 AirWeight baton for another self defense situation I also carry pepper gel.
A beautiful tool and piece of upholding the rule of law.
I carry dad's old pr24 he gave me 😂
He now has a 26in peacekeeper baton highly recommended

Very true. Can't wait for your next shield box review like seeing the new gear , stay safe out there brother, may God bless
Still pref. the 24" Bonowi thou

I carry a Peacekeepers International 29 inch baton
Nah. Mine rides in my bag, right where it belongs. Can be grabbed for clearing spiderwebs if needed.
I have that exact same baton
Do you have any thoughts on Bryna? High-powered pepperball guns seem most intended as a less lethal civilian defense weapon.
Tommy. Can we get another duty flashlight uses video?? And maybe where you think flashlight technology will go in 5 10 years.. what duty like are you rocking now? I have a fenix tk 20r 2.0
I carry mine everywhere when I walk. Here in Hawaii shit be crazy
You are hilarious and inspirational.
Filipino Martial Arts can help maximize its use. I know Jared wihongi teaches a course to help maximize its use and applications.
I'm confused. If you hit someone across the side of the head with this baton, will it hurt them?
is 21in more practical than 16in baton?

My Lieutenant may as well have had a light Saber, the results looked the same. Expandable baton he could use it!
Everything goes better with cocobolo😎

Yeah, but back to your title you’re right cop shouldn’t be used like that at all
Good for breaking out panes of windows on wellness checks…
If a policeman/woman has to break out the baton, I think the situation is kind of serious.
I have two of them, and I don’t trust them.
I practice with mine everyday, dont sneek up on me at night when im walkin my dog.
used it to break a window
What a minute. Is that a spike stored in the back of it?
The spike is part of the internal release mechanism
Its all good till it gets took away from you and used on you instead of them
Try and get it from me 😊

I would feel more confident swinging my stick rather than my fist. I practice just enough probably not enough.
