  • Highlights from an old Schwinn Stingray repair. The bicycle was totally disassembled, degreased, cleaned up, front wheel rebuilt, new 5 speed drum brake rear wheel built, new rear tire, all new cables, reassembled and test ridden.

    This was an especially fun video; that bike looks nifty. I hope it goes to an appreciative kid!
    (That was a great edit when you flipped over the packaging to reveal the Twitter and Facebook logos... I chuckled audibly.)

      Thanks! I worked for a Schwinn dealer in the 80's, and it seemed like I worked on old Schwinn's all the time back then. It's kind of a treat when one comes around!

    My pops bought me one in 1970. I almost fainted when I got home from school, opened the garage and saw that bad boy sitting there.
    I absolutely loved my Pea Picker and have the fondest memories 51 years later!

    What a blast down memory lane. I had one of those when I was a kid. It was the Orange Crate edition with the 5 speed stick shift and a slick tire on the back. I was in love with it. It didn't last too long though before it was stolen. It was so much fun to ride. You could pop wheelies all day long with it and it left awesome skid marks with that fat slick tire! I of course had playing cards in the spokes so it sounded like a motorcycle. 😁

    Pea Picker (green), Orange Crate (orange), Lemon Peeler (yellow) - hopefully I'm remembering that right. I had a green Sting Ray with the two-speed hub - I'd pretend I was Evil Knievel jumping over cars when I was a kid. Thanks for sharing.

      Yeah every time I mess with one of these it brings back all those memories. I think every kid that was around in the early 70's wanted to be Evel Knievel! In fact, I'd have to give him most of the credit for starting BMX!! Thanks for watching and commenting!

    Dude! Are used to have one of these! In the late 70s I had one. It was orange and looked exactly like this. That was my favorite bike in the whole world. Kicking myself in the ass for not hanging onto it

    Wondering about the front drum brake assembly, needing to take mine apart on exact same bike.. you said on this video it had a locknut that holds it together? Mine must be froze up, can I rubber mallet it off?

    Nice demonstration and great job on the build, I'm getting ready to restore a '72 Pea Picker with rear Disc brake, have you ever overhauled one of those before?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  6 років тому +1

      Thanks! I worked on one of those older disc brake set ups around 20 years or so ago. From what I remember, it was a pretty simple system. Probably the most difficult part would be finding brake pads if it needs them! I enjoy working on old Schwinn's when I get a chance. They seem to last forever! 50 years from now, most of the current bikes will be dust in the wind, but I'm pretty sure there will be some Schwinn's still going strong!
      Have fun with your overhaul project and thanks for commenting!

      Thanks Joey, I agree I have restored several early 70's lightweight road bikes and they always look like new after restoration, now I'm working on collecting and restoring the Krate line up...thanks for sharing!

    5 year old video so idk if ill get a response but what type of grease did you use?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  9 місяців тому

      It looks like Park Tool grease. That's what most all shops I've worked at typically use.

    It's a 69, the one year only shifter told me that.
