  • In this video, I decided it was time to experiment with waxing my chain to form a valid, honest opinion on chain waxing. The experiment is still ongoing, but well after 1000 miles, I'd say my opinion has definitely changed. This is a little list of some of the products I used that may make your our experience easier to navigate:
    Silva Secret chain wax: amzn.to/3RvO3mF
Crock Pot 1.5 quart slow cooker: amzn.to/3TejEdN
Strainer to boil chain in hot water similar to what I used in the video: amzn.to/487A5wF

What I do after waxing right out of the cooker when the chain is still hot is to wipe off the extra wax on the outside of the chain. Just by holding the chain from one end with a bent spoke and running it through the rag. Gets rid of the unnecessary wax on the outside of the chain. I find that the main benefit of waxing is to have a cleaner chain on the bike. Especially in mountainbiking where your chain is subject to all the elements 😀

Changed to waxed chains a year ago and can assure you it’s a good idea. Whole drivetrain stays so much cleaner, never looked back. Like you said: Cleaning the chain initially is the biggest job. Trick is to do at least two chains each time. Then you have one ready when it’s time to do the other one. Keep the great vids coming!

Thanks for sharing! I think it's definitely a good idea to have a chain ready to install at any given time...

I know this is late news, but there is a channel called zero friction cycling and his 20 mins tutorial will explain all, he has research data from running chains for thousands of miles on test benches with different lubes and different waxes etc, and drivetrain wear is greatly reduced when using wax, what happens with traditional lubricants is they become a grinding paste and mix with the dirt and start eating away at the chain cassette and chain rings, where's wax if you ride in normal conditions and wax every 250 to 300 km or so, you reset the contamination in the chain and basically get a brand new chain, this saves your drivetrain and makes it last much much longer, by orders of magnitude, it's not even comparable , especially if you have an expensive like an AXS, replacing that is not cheap.
Anyway the best waxes from his tests seem to be silca hot melt wax, and Molten Speed Wax, both of these brands have shown significant reduction in component wear.

Squirt chain lube is the best way to wax a chain 🤣

Good to see you well and experimenting new things! Since I’m lazy, I bought a waxed chain from Silca. Will follow your example if my next summer’s biking experience with a waxed chain is conclusive. Do you intend to pursue with waxing your chain?

I guess I'm still experimenting, but so for, I'll probably stick with it for a bit. We might start to offer the service at the shop as well!

Hello Joey. n Great video, I to, having been thinking about this, as a winter project. I will test on 1 bike first . The Rock n Roll Gold has been my go to lube for years. After watching the Silca videos, you only need to reapply the Silca liquid drip wax, not any petroleum based lude, otherwise, you must completely degrease the chain . I'm not about to do this to all 6 bikes, just my fav. Thanks KB

I'm with you! I was a little skeptical. Seemed like alot of work for a tiny reward! I did this a few times and it seemed OK. But I just started using the Muc Off Ceramic lubes for everyday and having great results. Then for race day I just throw a Cocaine Bear chain on!
