Never tried these apps before, never saw the point when I have Photoshop but questions about painting software make their way into every single comment sections of my videos so it's time I stop being a princess and give these a shot. Hope the perspective helps and don't forget to have a good weekend bruh. Free brushes right this way (photoshop only muhahaha) cbr.sh/befto
Your free brushes can also be imported in Krita
@@ten_0199 really?? Nice
Ctrl key is color picker in Krita, I'm sure people have told you already but I did literally yell at my screen when you said you did t find the tool. I had to comment.
I think they also can be imported to procreate
To increase and decrease brush size in medibang i press ctrl+alt and left click(pen) to the left or right, is faster than the hotkeys
Krita has a color picker tool, it is pressing Ctrl instead of Alt
I have been educated, thanks!
@@YTartschool You can also change it to Alt as well. Krita gives you so much control for a free program its unreal.
thank goodness i was gonna say that
KRITA IS UNDERRATED AF 🔥🔥🔥 i've been using it for years and i absolutely love it, it keeps improving crazy update after update and they recently released it on android.
its on android?
@@johnnielurker yes! But as I know, only in tablets
@@danielaacevedo1150 oh ok i see
I agree! Our studio has been donating to Krita's development for years & the new version released this year is really comparable to PS. We also did the beta test for Android & looks great on Samsung! For painting, Krita's brush engine + customization is actually superior to PS if you have a system that can handle it, e.g., smudge brushes with texture mask + color dynamics. It lets you apply paint & push it around on canvas in a way that feels like traditional art. It also offers full GMic integration so there's unlimited filters for the photo folks.
Please note, Krita is designed to work across platforms & for users all over the world, so it has a lot of customization options. If you find your brushes are lagging or pen pressure isn't working, it's either bc (1) you have Windows Ink & need to choose that option in the "Configure Krita" menu, or (2) you need to make other tweaks to settings like increasing the amount of memory the app can use or using the Tablet Tester under the Configure menu to set the pen sensitivity. I recommend everyone try the app, even if you have PS.
@@danielaacevedo1150 Hi Daniela, our studio uses Samsung Galaxy Note phones & we have the Krita for Android. I'm not sure if this is only on Samsung or it's all Android phones, but I suggest you to look in the app store, bc we are able to use it just fine on the phones
If you make a medibang account, you have tons of brushes at your disposal.
Exactly..
Marc, you havent explored the possibilities and resources of medibang fully to be able to give a valid conclusion.
I agree medibang does not have the full features that photoshop has however for manga artists, and stylized illustration as well as comics its more than perfect.. much more that Krita in my opinion
Right and there's a thing you can set up for the size of your brush too :D like it's super exact
i mean the brushes that are available aren't really that impressive tho
Facts
I make custom brushes in Medibang all the time. It's super easy, barely an inconvenience.
you can create custom brushes in medibang just for anyone wondering
medibang is so good there's a lot you can do once you take time to try the program, it's limited in some stuffs but in general, is really good, i just use krita or ps when i need to use rulers, work with some really exact things or create some patterns, the rest, all in medibang
Krita MasterRace

@@lyn7591 stop right there thief, I represent the faceless entity that is Adobe. you're under arrest! >:?(
@@sextuspestus7054 I'm joking I personally use clip(I paid for that :)
Lyn hahahaha
Krita would almost be great if it wasnt so unoptimized
I wanna say that in Krita, I definitely have the option to hotkey color picker. I'm not sure why it isn't working for you but I do know it's an option. Mine is bound to ctrl and I don't have to manually re-elect my brush after.
Besides that, Krita is definitely my preferred choice. Like you said, it's only a shame that gradient maps don't work so well but I do actually find the brushes to be in many ways better than PS. So it's a trade off I'm willing to make ( watercolor brushes are super good )
Interesting, cheers for letting me know! I thought I looked everywhere but I guess not :D
ya I was about to say color picker can be used with ctrl as long as your using some sort of painting tool
@@YTartschool you can also change it to alt. Go to Settings > Configure Krita > Canvas Input Settings > Alternate invocation drop down > Change the INput to Alt + Ctrl Left button for pick foreground color. Or you can just select photoshop profile from the input profile dropdown at the top. Same goes for Keyboard Shortcuts instead of changing manually you can just use the photoshop shortcut scheme listed in the dropdown.
@@YTartschool Something else is that you can import photoshop brushes to krita
I personally adore krita. Its a great piece of software and it lets you have so much control over your canvas
Personally I prefer Autodesk Sketchbook because I'm dumb and I can get used to the simplicity of Sketchbook easily
Finally someone recommended Krita. It's hotkey binding is super crazy. I like its brush size adjust shortcut most. You just need to press shift and drag.
I love using Medibang! I use to use Krita, but sadly it started to lag whenever I wanted to draw and kept crashing
lol yess!!
What? It was the opposite for krita and medibang for me
Same, I also started with Krita, but Medibang works better for me
As a Krita user, I somehow feel proud of my baby
The nice thing about Krita is it does get pretty frequent updates. So the software keeps getting better over time! ^^
*me already using Krita* Yeah go use this program!
What I like about it is that, while there arent many downloadable brushes available in the internet, the preset brushes the program already has is amazing, and very customizable. Hotkeys are simple and quick. Like, you can keep using the brush (B) but like hold CTRL for the eyedropper, or press E for the eraser while retaining the same brush you were already using.
Personally i added mirroring to z and hide layer to s for even more efficiency, my workflow has never been so smooth since
I use Autodesk sketchbook and I really like it I especially like how I can change my brush size and opacity by just dragging on the grey circle and how I can simple change the saturation and brightness by dragging the black circle
same
I'm using for a few weeks now and was wondering was the hell those circles were for. Guess i finally know now
@@blackcitadel37 how did you manage drawing on the app without knowing that XD
@@shadownight3030 maybe I’m just misunderstanding them but I’ve had Sketchbook for like three years now and have no idea what they’re talking about 😳

Photoshop alternative?
Krita or CLIP Studio Paint
Clip Studio hands down the closest clone and possibly better then PS, imho, but PS Is master with filters and finalizing your work.
@@frejazz2 isn't a bit limited with all the filter masks?
Nicola Corrà yes true. I would still say PS is king in filters and the finishing and finalizing of your work.
d .byn Hi! Photoshop is made for more things, Clip paint is specifically for illustration which is why you won’t have as many filters.
@@LOVESlCK Oh hey...Yep, you are right, I totally agree :)))
Krita's animation workflow is also GREAT. Could be a bit more polished, but it definitely gets the job done.
Photoshop can be free with the right knowledge :)
They have started to crack down on that recently
Photoshop can be free with CRACK HUAHUAHAUAHAUAHAU
@@frejazz2 good one man
Ya already kno we rockin that 2020 PS outta charge
i got it with crack but it wont register the pen pressure lmao
it was working last time but suddenly it stopped so yeah
I've been using Medibang for a while now. In Medibang there's a brush control tab, it was in the same section as the brush selector, the tabs were at the bottom so I don't think you noticed. Creating brushes in medibang is also different from photoshop. It's hard to explain without images, but I'll try to explain in a reply to this. It's easy to customise the workspace, in the windows tab at the top you can find things. Like photoshop, you just drag the tab to reorganise the workspace.
I'm not familiar with Kirta but I do know at the settings tab at the top there are options to customise your workspace with even more UI elements (Settings > Dockers). The themes are also nice, they're like dark and light mode, but more advanced (Settings > Themes). Under the window tab at the top there's premade workspaces (Window > Workspace), there's one for animation, a couple for vector and many for illustration making.
In Medibang, if I remember correctly, you can press Ctrl+Alt and then drag the pen across the canvas to increase and decrease the brush size effortlessly. I've found that a lot of softwares have it.
Yeah
I've been working in sketchbook for a year, it felt simple and easy to learn and navigate, while photoshop just scared me away, too much stuff going on there, maybe it's just me. Instinctively though I understand that photoshop is better, but I'm too noob to just roll with it. You got me interested in krita, I'll try it, maybe It will help get used to photoshop. Thanks for the video :D
Krita is as difficult as Photoshop. Sketchbook is easy for beginners but severely lacking.
Well, I have been wanting to switch to medibang for a long time, (Had AutoDesk Sketchbook) but when I tried krita, it was just too overwhelming. I didnt understand anything and I always had it glitch and lag then shut off. So, maybe in the future I'll try krita again!
I felt that way too, the first time I tried Krita. I bounced off of it hard. I recently came back to it, especially after using Medibang, Clip Studio, and Photoshop for a few years and learned a lot more about digital painting. Now it's no trouble. I am comfortable with it, and even collaborated with a friend on some channel art using only Krita.
Take your time, take it slow. Start with basic functions, then expand.
I suggest giving Krita another try. The version that was released this year is highly superior to past versions. Also do yourself a favor & download a few good brush sets such as "Hushcoil" (google it) & David Revoy's sets. He's an illustrator who helps design Krita brushes & he offers additional downloads for free on his website. If you find Krita lags, you may need to tweak the settings to allow the program to use more memory, but if you're on a PC that's able to stream YT vids, you've prob got enough memory. Krita even works on Android now
Think of it as leveling up my first art app was Autodesk it's great for beginners then after about 4-5 years I out grew it I tried using MediBang but it was over whelming and I didn't know where anything was so I instead started using ibis paint pro it opened me up to a lot more and wasn't overwhelming at the same time it was a good switch then I out grew that too and I'm using MediBang again and now I feel at home with the program maybe for you, you could find two art programs to use to learn and grow from so it can make you feel more comfortable with Krita because Krita seems like a level up from MediBang
Is Krista unavailable for mobile phones? I searched on playstore but couldn't find it
@@anonymouspotato Well, when I got it on my laptop (I use my laptop and phone to draw on) and it wasnt in a store, it was a website with a free download. So, you would have to look it up on google to see if its available or not. Hope that helps!
Frankly, the brush engines in Krita are also years and light-years ahead of the one in Photoshop. Not even a question.
Woah there let’s not get carried away 😆
Right? "Pretty damn close" to Photoshop, man, I bet it's Photoshop "pretty damn close" to Krita, not the other way around! Especially with those new RGBA additions. (I don't think there are any public brushes for that so I think it's not that easy to take advantage of that but it was just recently implemented, so I hope to see more in the future).
@@tymondabrowski12 Yeah the RGBA brushes are nice, even better when you find out you can use any color with them by going to Brush Tip - Predefined - and check lightness instead of color.
And blending modes inside masked pixel brushes are also so much fun. 'Been playing around with Ramon's watercolor brushes for months and still coming up with new variations with different effects!
@@YTartschool Krita has many brush engines. The pixel brush engine is what closest to photoshop. There are other brush engines which help in mimicking real world media better and as the comment said it really has so many options to tweak.
Krita and medibang are my favorite programs to use. I've always preferred medibang more mostly because its a simpler program than krita and kritas default layout feels odd to me and its hard to find what I want. but other than that id say krita is a lot more professional feeling.
You can use Photoshop brushes in krita. But only the brush tip. You can manually adjust the settings like opacity and flow and whatever.
i love Krita! Been using it proffesionally now for awhile :)
Krita is by FAAAAAR my favorite. I have been using it for around 1.5 years and I still love it
Lol 1.5 😆 but I guess I'll give it a try to comment's have been talking about Krista alot, guess I'll try something new
As others have already mentioned, Ctrl + Left key is the default shortcut for color picker in Krita. You can change that to Alt + Left key by going to Settings->Configure krita->Canvas input settings->Alternative Invocation.
Didnt know you can change it o.o
But damn, I already used with ctrl
Krita definitely seems like the preferred choice, looking at the comments anyway
Krita is so good!
I use it and its awsome, i also used medibang, but i preffer krita.
If you don't chose Krita I will be disappointed.
(I'm joking, but it is my recommendation)
I'm still struggle using Krita. Still use Medibang now.
One reason I prefer medibang over Krita is that medibang has cloud storage
Krita is my choise! This have more tools for paint instead photoshop. Paint on spline, perspectives..and more..
I enjoy watching these from start to finish 💖 Thank you so much Marc 🌸
Thank you!!! You covered the points of comparison I was looking for and I’m very thankful.
Only reason I don't use Sketchbook is because it doesn't have layer clipping feature.
Medibang is lighter than krita, but krita has awesome brushes and Animation features. These two are more than enough for me.
the one great thing i like about autodesk sketchbook is the touch compatibility, especially compared to photoshop, is so smooth
I love Krita so much. There is just one feature I wish it had, and that's the ability to render an animation with a transparent background.
thank you for hte free brushes sir, im just getting started in digital, this will be a big help
I love krita so much! So im happy to hear that you approve of it
Always nice to see Krita getting the recognition it deserves! Thanks to the developers for making it free for all to use.
About to start your ‘Art School’ and gonna use Krita. Excited 🥳
I've been waiting for this!!!! Amazing video Marc
regarding your problem with krita and the color picker:
i use krita and its strg/ctrl instead of alt, then you click with ur pen on the display on the color and you have your brush that u had before with the new color
I use Medibang and I find that it's the closest to photoshop, I have photoshop I just draw in Medibang
I can't thank you enough for this, I've been struggling to find actual good drawing apps, so thank you!!
I love Sketchbook, its practicality and simplicity are so amazing
I have a design studio that uses PS of course, but I absolutely LOVE Krita. It's brush engine & customizability is the the best for painting, far superior to PS, & my Krita has 100% of the hotkeys I use in PS so I'm not sure why your color picker didn't work. Our studio uses Samsung tablets & 2-in-1 PCs (basically, the Samsung version of MS Surface) which incorporates Wacom pen tech + Windows Ink, which is optimal for painting & works great with Krita. I haven't found any other program that lets you apply paint & push it around in a way that feels as natural as Krita, except maybe Corel Painter, but it's pricy. Our studio has donated to Krita's development for years & I strongly recommend it to everyone.
For Krita, you can just press *Ctrl* to go to colour picker. For as long as you press Ctrl, you are in colour picker, and once you release it, you go back to the previous brush.
I think that's what you were saying it couldn't do, but it can. It's just on Ctrl instead of Alt.
Man love your content. Absolutely master!
krita has always been a personbal favorite for me, im glad to see that itll make a transition easier if i ever upgrade to photoshop
*"Make sure to subs-"* What?? What is it that we are supposed to do?? We'll never know...
lol
I think he meant to say subspicious
Make sure to sub-
I think he was saying
Make sure to subdive, remember he is also a 3d artist
There is another thing in Krita that makes it good for a hobbyists and art enthusiasts who are not up to spent money on their hobby: Krita is pretty low on hardware requirements. I use it on notebook with 4Gb RAM, dual core 2.2GHz cpu and no graphics card, and it still work acceptable with canvases up to 2000x3000 pixels.
Yes thank you I needed this so badly!
i switched from PS to Medibang, and while i do have some complaints on medibang, their manga creating tools are rly damned good, and i rly like the different "rulers" for making background or speech baloons
Used photoshop for years until I made the switch to Krita, which is in my opinion a better drawing/painting app than Photoshop in a lot of ways. Although I agree photoshops gradient map is slicker atm. Krita’s brush engine is better which is what’s paramount to me. Great video btw 🙂🙌🏾
I used sketchbook for years and the only complain I had was that there were no filters. And it does actually have brush blending modes
this video was really helpful, i really appreciate your work and hope you keep making video
Thanks, I was looking for apps to draw and I found this video I loved it
Hello Marc! I've recently discovered you and this channel, gotta say it's pretty amazing! I really appreciate all your knowledge and tutorials that you so kindly upload for free.
I use Krita myself (GIMP too for certain things), but am still very much a nooblet in pretty much all aspects. I'd love to use your brushes, though it seems without photoshop I'd only get the png tips and none of the attributes. Personally, I think it would be very useful to understand - 'brush theory' - basically how you make your brushes! What tip shape, size, opacity, spacing, ect. is useful for what situations.
This way nooblets everywhere could stop blindly trying to 'find the best brushes' and start to make their own! (I've noticed that more advanced digital artists tend to have made / modified their own brushes). It would apply across most / all applications as well. I think an understanding of how your tools work helps you use them correctly, and digital painting tools are pretty mystical.
It's probably a bit too into the weeds though haha, I doubt that you're messing with brushes that often. And of course it's the artist - not the tool.
Still, thanks for sharing your insight!
I left PS CS2 for Krita some time ago. I can't see myself going back unless the brush engine has made major improvements since then. One thing I would suggest people wanting to try it keep in mind is to expect a slight learning curve. There is just so much you can do with it. It's actively developed and they have ways of letting you give feedback suggestions and request.
They've actually fixed an issue I reported on their subreddit. It got fixed in a future update :)
Sketch book is always my favourite. The steady stroke is the best!
I love you so much! Thank you for being such an asset!
Krita has definitely become my go-to. I'm a hobbyst with more than enough other expensive hobbies, so I don't feel like dropping a monthly sub into Adobe's greedy jaws (also because I absolutely despise the Software-as-a-service business model. Fuck that.). Have found Krita a few years back and never looked back. It's grown quite a bit since then, too.
YES! Krita getting some love!! Krita is a great alternative software if you don't wanna spend on monthly subscriptions on PhotoShop like myself XD haha
love to see more krita! it's not just free but also open source
I've been using Krita for the last 5yrs and I love it
Marc don't worry, for sure will tell my imaginary friends about this quality channel lol
I am also looking for a photoshop alternative... I really don't wanna support the monthly subscription system.
(as for paid programs) There's Affinity Designer that is 1time payment. It's an alternative for Adobe illustrator, but it has some tools from Affinity Photo (alternative for Photoshop), so you can sort of do both vector and raster art ;) It's very similar to Adobe programs. For now I mostly miss "smart objects" there and being able to "vectorise" a raster image (but I use Inkscape for that). It's quite young program, so it might get much closer to Adobe in the future (though it's really close even now) :P I switched to Affinity last year, so I could do my university projects (graphic design) at home, but also use it for my digital art :P They have some sales ones in a while (black friday, covid etc.)
There's clipstudio paint, it ain't free but it's good lol
Sai
Paint tool sai
CLIP STUDIO, hands down the best, better then PS for painting, imo, for design not so much
Been using Medibang paint pro for the past 2 years and honestly it is the best program I have ever used especially for being free! it has so many different brushes, cloud save and even a way to make comics in a simple way! I highly recommend this program! ♥
I only started drawing digitally this year, and when I bought my Cintiq, I got Clip Studio Paint for free. Have you used that software? If so, what do you think about it compared to Photoshop?
I would love to see Marc review Clip Studio Paint
I use KRITA all of the time to make full on animation proper anime shows and all kinds of art properly and it's MUCH better than photo shop to me even though i have that too....sketchbook pro is just ok for a bit of art but as for jump paint it is no match for firealpaca as it's similar but does not have the 3d perspective guide tools etc plus did you know you can do animation in firealpaca too however nowhere near as powerful as krita
Thank you so much I needed s person to give me confidence in krita :)
I recently switched to Krita from Photoshop and agree with you completely. I have worked with each of the programs you went over, and Krita has felt the most like Photoshop. It's missing some of photoshop's functions, but nothing that is missed too badly for me. I struggled with the color picked too though haha, i eventually figured out that the default was set to control instead of alt. Oh! And medibang does allow for custom brushes by the way, I have seen some nice ones com from there before, but there aren't very many options for customizing them if I remember correctly.
I think Krita is very good, mostly for the design of the app itself, reminds me of photoshop and I guess some people could get used to photoshop by using Krita
I love Sketchbook but it lacks such basic options (clipping masks, rotation snapping, layers snap...)
Yay!
I was hoping Krita could appear in one of these type of videos!
:)
Thank you for the video! Very very useful!
Sketchbook is beginner friendly, okay? You won't feel too overwhelmed with all the features you've yet to learn and you can create pretty decent artwork and move to advanced once later. It's so underrated, AF.
GIMP? I haven't needed Photoshop -that I still have atm- since I've downloaded GIMP.
In Krita touch the screen where you want to get the eyedropper color and hit Ctrl then let go. The brush you were using is still selected and you have the color where your pen tip touched
I love Krita, I use it all the time. It's going to have another update soon and is always improving. If you find bugs you can report them and they will fix them over time. It is worth watching the videos on their official youtube channel to pick up some great tips because it is so customisable.
Medibang is the very first app (I'm on mobile and f i n g e r s) I used when I started doing Digital art, to this day I still use it ^^.
My only problem is that I can't quite do that much effects on it, like that tunnel blur (I think that's what it's called)
If anyone have some tips, I'd appreciate to know ^^
Krita CAN run exactly like Photoshop with the right configuration.
i went from sai to krita kind of accidentally; i wanted a free programme with a text tool so i downloaded krita, tried the default brush tool just to see if it was any good and i immidiately fell in love. the pens work just like youd hope they would, and thats the most important part of any art software imo. i never knew what i was missing until then (…though i never did get around to testing the text tools lmao)
5:16 In medibang, hold ctrl+alt and then klik and drag the cursor left or right to change the brush size, I hope this help.
actually in medibang paint pro there is cloud brushes and you can make your own too. I mustn't be the first to tell but if your looking how to here's simple steps.
1.click the cloud icon
2.you can see the cloud brushes. just click what you like.
to make your own brushes
1.draw the pattern in canvas (or file)
2.click the add brush(bitmap ver)
3.select from canvas (from file)
4.adjust settings in edit window
or... you could just search in medibang website. it'll guide you.
Thanks you always help so much
Thank You!
Actually I moved from Photoshop to Krita "I dont wanna use Photoshop anymore they are running against my conduct"
It was so smooth going between them. and I never looked back tbh.
Yes Krita lacks a lot of polish and stablity but man oh man its just too good and its potential is limitless.
its just ... the thing that Breaks me and just ... make me go GRRRR teh eraser in the pen doesnt work. ever since a certain update my eraser in the pen doesnt work. like the program recognise it but when you use the eraser it uses it as a paint .. I reported this error so many times and yet no one fixed it yet it drives me mad. I know its easy to just Click E but it uses the same pen so the erase isnt as consistent but before the eraser was it own Paint brush.
Yeah i noticed the eraser problem too, it keeps the same brush and i always have to switch it manually at Krita start but for me it's fine, it registered a hard edge eraser and i often need a soft one
Hi, Krita now allows you to "map" 10 brushes to hot keys. Go into Tools -> Scripts -> Ten Brushes & choose whichever brushes you like. You can make 1 of these the hard eraser or whatever other erase you want to use consistently. If you want to change the hot keys for these, go into Settings -> Configure Krita -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Tools -> Scripts -> Ten Brushes
I honestly don't see why Photoshop is used as the gold standard for painting programs.
yea i have a super hard time using it i prefer medibang 100x
I have all of them, and I am glad you did this vidoe, its helped alot
Great Video!! I'm using Krita at the moment. Just finished & uploaded my first cartoon
Prolly first
you can hold ctrl in krita to colour pick and release to switch to brush
You can color pick in Krita with ctrl while using the brush, you can also change it to alt but I'm not sure where exactly (I know I've seen the option), also if you use ctrl+alt left click you can pick local color of the selected layer! Change brush size easily with shift + lmb and drag up to increase or decrease. Also you can select active layer directly on the canvas with r+lmb 🙃
I got a Samsung s6 tab for a bit of digital drawing. Still very very new and drying to get the basic. Great free alternatives for starters like me
Krita is so good I still can't believe it's free. The community is awesome as well!
Hi there, been using Krita a few months. The hot key for color picker is Ctrl and I was also able to bind it straight to my xp pen
Oh and shortcutwise in Krita, Ctrl is color picker. Space is pan. Shift + Space is rotate canvas (click and drag), Ctrl+space is zoom canvas (click and drag), Hold shift (click and drag) to increase/decrease brush size. 1,2,3 is Zoom 100%, Zoom fit height and zoom fit width. 456 is rotate 15 dgree left/reset rotation/15 degree right. Check out G'mic-qt addon for filters. it is INCREDIBLE and works with GIMP (and i think Paintdotnet) too.
medibang has the option to not only download more brushes from the in-app cloud, but you can also make your own brushes. so it is NOT limited to just those few starter brushes!!
Actually Krita has a ton features of setting and customizing the brushes. You can pick a brush you like, customize it, give it an own name/Icon and save it in an own folder which can easily be shown on your working desk.
Krita is goal! You can also do animation (or at least try it out, bc it's lagging a lot). And good news, there will be new updated version out there soon (beta is opening earlier). 👍👍👍
Thanks so much for making this I agree Krita was the closest to PS for me too! Even on tablet it was quite usable - also agree that color picker was a drag :(....hopefully there will be a fix soon, it is still really usable though. I can't believe it is free!
