  • A simple, fairly generic mayfly pattern I came up with in the spring of 2021.
    Hook: #12-16 1x long dry fly
    Thread: Black
    Tail: White hackle fibers
    Rib: Flat silver Mylar tinsel
    Body: White or cream synthetic dubbing
    Wing: White calftail
    Hackle: White or light cream

      Okay John, when you say "small" pike, what is a small one? 12 or 14 inches? Isn't that still a pretty fun fish?? The number of pike or musky I've caught on a fly rod I can count on zero fingers. But I will someday!

    “Matt’s Ephoron or “Matt’s Leuko.” Ephoron Leuko being an actual white species of mayfly. Unfortunately neither of my name suggestions are very catchy.
    The species is all over the east coast & I saw it sometimes starting in August on the Penobscot River, Maine. When I fished with local friends there, we used a white moth pattern to imitate it thinking we were looking at a moth rather than a mayfly. It wasn’t until the 1990s that I saw it in a book & realized it was an actual mayfly species. You tied a really nice imitation with this one, Matt. Great job!

    • @FlyTyer1948
      @FlyTyer1948 2 роки тому

      p.s. I don’t usually remember the Latin name, but I spent some time hunting this one down. Wiggie, my guide friend, told me the longest fight he ever saw with a huge landlocked salmon was on a “white moth.”

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому

      Great story Bob. And I'm betting you remembered right as Joe Duca just called it an Ephoron as well. And I agree that some bigger mayflies can look remarkably like moths. I've been fooled plenty of times thinking, "Where did that huge moth come from?" and then when it alights on the water, you can tell it's just a big beefy mayfly. When one lands on the water near me, I always hold my cast and watch it drift until it gets out of sight. Hoping to see a fish come up and eat it. Rarely have I seen it happen, but I have a time or two. :-)

    Awesome Matt! You should call it the Silver Streak because you believe "the secret sauce" is that thin silver rib. Plus the trout seemed to hit it like a run away train 😉As far as what bug it may be I thought of the Ephoron or the "White Fly" that's known in PA. I don't know if they're on the Savage. Except for the wing it looks like the White Miller pattern. I've done well with a similar wet fly I found in one of those dial-a-box assortments bought at Kmart back in the day. Crappie love it, passes for a minnow fry I'd say. Matt, you have skills at the vise as well as the water. Thanks for sharing your experiment 🤓👍

      Great comment Joe; thank you! And yes, the White Miller! I have heard of that one. I think it's in Don Kirk's GSM book. I haven't gotten to Bob's comment yet (FlyTyer1948) but I think he tried to recall the Latin name as well. It might have been something like the Ephoron. As far as PA and MD... if something hatches in the mountains of PA, it's probably also here in western MD. It's all pretty much the mid-Atlantic Appalachians. In fact, my farm is in the thinnest sliver of Maryland- about 200 yards from West Virginia and maybe 10 miles from PA.

    I wanted to mention that a cream colored mayfly like this one emerges on the Susquehanna river in phenomininal numbers the end of may. They come off so thick that they will coat your car and windshield. I don’t know what they are either. But on the lower river near the Norman wood bridge is where I seen them. I assume the small mouth bass have a field day. There nice sized with size 12 and 10 being the right size for them.

    It's a White Miller with a hair wing = White Miller Wulff. An alternative might be to copy the preference of Charles R. Meck. He seems to like to put the "Wulff" part first, so "Wulff White Miller" might sound more melodic.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  2 роки тому +1

      That does sound pretty good! I never caught that Meck did that, but I do like the alliteration. :-)

    • @ronaldruneric4804
      @ronaldruneric4804 2 роки тому

      @@SavageFlies -- Just to explain: Meck writes "Wulff Royal Coachman" referring to what is usually called "Royal Wulff." Of course, my memory might be wrong, but I think he wrote that consistently. Come to think of it, "White Wulff Miller" or Miller Wulff White" would also be possible. Your cat must be guffawing at my dumb contributions.
