- Detailed instructions for tying a Quill Gordon dry fly.
Recipe:
Hook: 1X-long dry-fly hook (here a Dai-Riki 300), size 14.
Thread: Tan, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Tail: Medium-dun hackle fibers.
Body: Stripped peacock quill.
Wings: Lemon barred wood-duck feather.
Hackle: Medium dun.

Thank you this excellent video!!! I've been tying this pattern forever and always struggled with some aspect of it as I think it's pretty technical. It's still not easy for me but I feel pretty confident tying it especially if I'm screwing up I know why and how to fix it. I broke into tying in the 70's and we were taught to tie these old standards. I still love them along with all of your videos!!!

Very well done Tim. That is the way for the most part that I tied my Catskill style flies. Then again I haven’t tied one in a few years due to nymph fishing the whole time the last few years and tying fast and simple dries when it comes to dry flies
Nice looking nymph. I like quill bodies but they do present challenges. What an easy fix. Have a great weekend Matt. I’m going along on an elk hunt this weekend with my son in law. I can’t hunt elk again yet but will tend camp while he is out hunting. We got our first snow today so should be fun.

very nicely done, material selection is crucial if you want to make picture perfect flies but I have found the trout dont care much if its pic perfect or not
When I took some fly tying lessons at Oakdale Gun and Fly ( god did I drop money in that place, they were seven minutes from my driveway) One of the dries he taught us to tie was the Quill Gordon. I always had trouble with setting the wings, I even forgot to put wings on a couple and I still caught fish on them. I got everything but the wood duck, I will buy some the next time I go up to Upcountry in New Hartford. Oakdale Gun and Fly has been gone now for the better part of thirty years now. I like quick durable flies for my trout fishing. But there is something to be said for doing the traditional fly patterns like the Quill Gordon, yeah they fish well but taking the time to tie one well will also translate to tying other flies well. This damn hobby is worst than just drinking. even in my worst of drinking days, I never drank more than 10 bucks worth at a bar in my life. Fly fishing, heck I can drop 200 and not even give it a second thought. Now the Idea that I am going to have to hunt ducks again got me thinking gee I need a new shotgun. Flagger you are a fly-tying pusher!!!

Color me a heretic, but I’ve always been a bit skeptical of catskill flies like this.
Gorgeous for certain, suggesting to me some nostalgic age of which I, being a younger fisherman, have no memory. A bit like the image of an old fishing lodge with antlers over the fireplace.
I wonder if the trout appreciate the effort.

If you dont have woodduck, try a gadwall flank and dye it a very light yellow.
It is always interesting to see each tier's approach to setting those wings. Everyone seems to have a slightly different approach that works. I have watched you, Grobert, Brandt, C John, Valla, and others tie beautiful wings but each has a slightly different method. Interesting.

Forsythia just starting to bloom here in NW NJ too. Hopefully we can get a few days where everything comes together during the early season. Seems like bugs, fish, water flow, weather and work all have to match up for really successful hatch anymore.
Ain't that the truth! But I find with a fly the trout are seeing, and you see a few rises, you can get a couple on the dry. Sure we all love those good hatches, like the Grammons on the Little J, or Green drakes on Pens, but with a little diligence and perseverance we can still magically conjure up a few on the dry. And I do soo love to see 'em taking my dry:)

Ironically, this video appeared in my UA-cam feed today, just I finished reading the section on the Quill Gordon in Mike Valla’s book on Catskills Dry Flies (a superb book).
First question: Both Gordon & Valla coated the hackle body with varnish & you used head cement to reinforce it. Is there a particular reason that you chose head cement rather than one of the UV resins?
Second question: You followed the tradition of starting the fly several thread wraps behind the eye of the fly. Is there a reason to do that other than following the tradition? Couldn’t starting the thread further forward be used to slightly increase body length or increase the wing hackling?

Do they still make Dai-Riki hooks? Also what would be a good alternative 1x long dry fly hook?
I prefer TMC hooks. I mostly use the 100 and 5212 for my dry fly need.

It absolutely can, but then it would be more of a Red Quill than a Quill Gordon. There are many Catskill style fly patterns that differ base on just a single material. It seems a little crazy at times, but that's how many classic patterns came to be.
@@tightlinevideo ok so it's not just me then. I've seen in books and videos that several different patterns are actually the same patter with just one slight variation. But I was more curious if the saddle quill would be too heavy. Thanks Tim!
Talk about step by step!!! If you follow this tutorial and STILL make an ugly fly.........fly tying definitely isn’t for you!
Well this fly might be an exception to that just because of the difficulty, but yeah every other video makes it impossible to mess up.
