I had two Mk1 1300 Sports during the 70's, one in Daytona Yellow and a later one in Diamond white. I wished I had kept my Daytona one, but I had a company car so it had to go. Both cars disappeared off the radar when unleaded petrol was introduced.
Sold my 1974 MK1 1100 in orange for £5 in 1981. What was I thinking?

Love hearing your voice again Steve!! And yes for those who don't know when metal gets hot it expands when it cools it contracts so if you were to weld it all at once it will make it look like waves instead you spot weld in random areas letting the pools cool makes the metal less warped in the end.
Always amazing and interesting work. I have learned a lot watch you guys, I think metal replacement beats Bondo and fiberglass patches everyday of the week Thumbs Up!

Now this is my favorite kind of videos seeing how the car is made structurally and watching you explain how and why you do certain things and a huge thanks about using the air tool to cool down the metal. I just can't say enough good things about this channel you my dear friends Steve and Ryan you guys are the best ❤️ there's so much thought and work that goes into working on cars doing what you are doing you have to be geniuses..I've saw other people on different channels show how they do patchwork on fixing floor pans and putting little patches on frame rails but never really fixing them like they should and I have saw you guys make frame rails that looks like they came out of the assembly line when new. I've never saw people do such top quality work as you and Ryan.. I have to admit when I saw Ryan make the frame rail for Matt Armstrong BMW I fell in love with the frame rail I still believe it belongs in a museum I wish 🤞 I had it just to set on the shelf to look at..I sure wish 🤞 someday I could travel over there and meet you guys. You all are the best you feel like family to me tbh..take care buddies and I hope you have a wonderful blessed rest of the week I have to go to my aunts viewing Friday and Saturday the funeral she is the aunt that gave me the jaguar car I have been talking about..

Love watching your streams and find them.very relaxing! What type of sheet metal do you use? When I did my Kitcar (Caterham Style) I used Zintec and gor a welder in.. Keep up the good work and hope you get good deals on your disc's for the 4" grinder ae you must get through a few..

Dunno how ye are finding it Steve, but we're so busy fixing rust here I'm going to bin-off sending stuff back in finished paint - half the day goes to pot trying to colour-match faded paint. Gonna send stuff out in 2K primer from now on & they can get someone else to do the painting. It's just too much of a ball-ache/time sink when you're set up for welding not painting.

Us older generation don’t no anything else working on the floor in all weathers if there was no room inside workshop , it’s why like you say we are knackered now in later life but we are a different breed ! 👍🏻😂

That is one rusty Mk1. Good things there's some decent panel manufacturers to help make things easier though 😊
I just found this channel and must say you goto love the classic small fords. I currently have a mk3 cortina or a td cortina as it's refered to as here in Australia. The car needs a fair bit of rust repairs in the rear and I have removed the rusty panels a long time ago. I have managed to find some replacement parts like the complete left quarter panel and outer rear valance. Though having problems finding others like the taillight buckets etc. I have looked at express steel panels in the uk and unfortunatly they tend to have a long lead time for the panels. No one seems to do replacement panels for the cortina here, apart for the sills & lower quarter panels. Can you suggest any other places in the uk that do replacement panels for the cortina?

Great work as always Steve! My question: is there enough strength in the chassis rail as it is now to be put back on the rotisserie? It seems as though the floor pan adds a lot of rigidness to the structure. Will you replace the floor pan before or after back on the rotisserie? Cheers from the island of Guam USA👍

Great skills, clearly. But what a butter is the steel (8:05), no strength, plyable like lead.
No sorry I don't think you understand how much strong steel with stretch when hit repeatedly with a hammer. That's 1mm sheet steel and it's stronger and thicker than the original steel on the car. I think the speed up maybe mislead you :)
Great work, and entertaining to watch, but...
why do you cut out such complicated shapes....I understand that you cut out the rust where you find it, but why cut out pointy triangle "L" shapes when you could make them simple square (er) shapes...wouldn't that be easier?

What paint is used prior to welding ?
I don't recon much to the holes rolled over....and a flap wheel disk would have been better for cleaning the weld up after

It's a shame what they do with such rare classic cars. In germany you will never pass the TÜV (MOT) with repairs like this, or on the datsun. I started viewing this beliving it's a joke, but they are in business with this sort of "bodywork". I'm scared! 😥
Poor customers and poor cars 😔 and if you think it's an country based quality thing, take a look on Trev's blog for an example. The UK is famous for great car manufactures and bodywork. But this??? 😭
To air hose cool or to not, irrelevant. ALL welds cause a tiny shrink around the outer edges of the heat effected zone, its just the nature of the beast. Heat expands the metal and the edge of the heat effected zone (red spot) gets forced into the metal at the edge which causes a shrink. you can take that shrink back out by use of hammer and dolly if you have access to both sides.

Not quite. The middle of the heat effected zone shrinks as it's being compressed by the cold perimeter. The metal around the heat affected zone is then in tension once cooled, stretching the middle will return the panel to normal. The compressed air speeds up the process of cooling before more tacks are added. If you want minimum distortion cool the panel to room temperature after every tack. The more heat you add while you're welding will increase the shrinkage and cause more distortion.
@@bensclassicbodywork Well explained! Kyle Carter shows a good example of how this works practically, on a Chev truck mudguard (fender), repair. He actually welds and grinds each weld section as he does it and the result is a beautiful and controlled joint. His Carter Restorations in Canada, is also a beaut treatise in old school metal bumping.
