Arrrrgh, no no. The edges on that controller should not be parallel. It's only comfortable like that on the Deck because of the spacing between the arms is wider. You have to minimise the amount a user's wrists bend. For a narrow controller like that, it needs to taper inwards, Ergonomics, people.

I personally think ARM support is for the Valve Deckard VR Headset, basically they need ARM chip to do tracking as X86 not supported, but they also want it to do 2D gaming as well not only VR, so it becomes kinda like Vision Pro an all in one device but focused in gaming, for that to happen they need to have games supporting ARM and SteamOS also integrated with SteamVR. Had an rog Ally Z1 extreme for about 3 months now And for some reason watching you And the nerdiness crew had me so interested in a steam deck that I purchased one yesterday. Just waiting for its arrival😂
You may be impressed in some ways and disappointed in others. The Deck is definitely not as powerful as your Ally, so some games will run at a lower framerate. This is somewhat mitigated by the 1280x800 display (it's literally pushing half the pixels) and the ability to manually set the screen's refresh rate -- 40FPS on a 40Hz display is smooth enough that you probably won't be able to tell the difference between that and 60@60. I know I can't. But even with those, you're still likely to see some choppier performance than the Ally's capable of, on really demanding games. One area where the Steam Deck really shines is its energy consumption at low demand. I can regularly get 6ish hours of battery life while playing GameCube games, and with some tweaking, really light games like Stardew will let it last for up to 10! And that's with the LCD model, which has a smaller battery than the OLED! The trackpads are also an amazing feature, especially when combined with SteamInput. There are so many games that were never designed for a controller, but making radial menus and things like that on the trackpads works amazingly well. 💗
That's a very neat controller project, but I'd like it to have speakers, just like the Valve one. Maybe it could emulate a DualSense controller which has a poor quality speaker but is implemented in Sony titles and it would be just nice to have.

I bought a steam deck because I had no PC. I built a gaming PC and now play low power games on my deck or stream high power games onto my deck. Gaming PC + Steam Deck is perfection.
a handheld running arm would make the battery last much longer too... so it would really make sense. Especially for the easy to run type games that the deck is great for.
9:00 Xbox 360 and Xbox One OEM chatpads are a must for me still. I like to watch UA-cam or various shows/Anime on my PC with Controller Companion and an Xbox One Controller as a mouse/keyboard. I would kill for a more reasonably priced alternative since OEM chatpads are getting insanely expensive on Ebay, unless this is only intended to be used on a Steam Deck.
They have hinted at arm support for years. The moment I saw an un-selectable tablet option in my steam library about two years, I figured tablet and mobile support were not far out. Unless that icon been there for something I don't understand it seemed like a hint to me that they were working on it.
I’ve actually had pretty decent success getting the Gyro to Joystick to work on the built-in Steam Deck controls, as well as the PS5 controller. It just takes a lot of tweaking to get it anywhere close to gyro to mouse.
The problem with that Steam Controller design is the grips are not angled out. When it's as wide as the Steam Deck is, it's not a problem, but I assure you, if you delete the screen having the grips straight up and down will be uncomfortable. Then there are the touch pads, you wouldn't need two if they are that close, just one. You could probably move the touch pad up and the sticks down. So you'd pretty much have a PlayStation controller, so Vavle just needs to enable full support for the DualSense Pro and BOOM, Steam Deck controller.
Great reporting but vague title and thumbnail. Would like to see more clarity there, since it makes them much more informative and easy to sift through when looking at all your videos in your profile. So far, Skill Up is the best in terms of clarity for all elements of a gaming news channel.
That steam deck controller person doesn't sound at all serious if he hasn't even started printing off shell designs yet. I wouldn't hold your breath people.
maybe not this upcoming headset, but perhaps they plan on an VR OS based on arch for ARM based headsets, something that can have an app store dedicated to VR programs. steam itself would be for vr games.
What is that Wipeout / F-Zero like game that was being shown in the video and is it available on Steam? And thank you for the roundup. These news reports are always very informative and exciting.
I've managed to get some pretty good results on the new Gyro To Joystick [Beta] mode. It does depend heavily on how the game's controller settings, though. Mostly being able to change the deadzone to 0 and response curve to linear.
I think Valve is working secretly in some way to make Proton work in ARM, with some Steam ARM build, and they are waiting for some new ARM leap like snapdragon elite for desktops. To launch all new Steam Deck 2 with huge battery life…
Yea, Ive been waiting for something that's close to xbox controller but with track-pads and keyboard added in so I can switch to desktop stuff while still on same controller.
I don’t even think I’d want the remaster of HZD. I like the looks of the old version better personally but if it has better overall fidelity I might pick it up.
And what was wrong with original steam controller? I'm totally in love with that thing. Playing with steam controller is in my opinion very good. The first game I tried was Dark Souls 3 and the game experience was just amazing.
10:17 Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. You don't get used to the lack of a second stick right away, I agree. But you have dpad as touchpad, and you can still bind multiple outputs to back paddles. I have both of the deck and the controller, but since I get used to it before deck, I don't feel that there's any big ladder jumps, more like downgrade of og bigpicture configs.. but even now, it's still huge unlimited power of tinkering
Can’t wait for them to officially release easy to install steam OS for other windows handhelds. I want to get an ally x and just install steam os on it
I hope all of this ARM work makes its way to MAC. I would love to play my entire Steam library on my MacBook. There is no competition when it comes to Apple Silicon performance while on battery. I had my desktop at home running windows, but for mobile I would love to use my Mac.
@@DracossaintI would say performance. Nothing else comes close to the performance on battery life, while actually maintaining battery life. My mobile device is gonna be unbearably slow when it's fuckin dead.
The Asahi project is making that possible. In fact Valve chose the same X86 emulator/recompiler software as Lina for running X86 games in Steam for Linux for testing and fixing the GPU driver she made. I don't know if any of that will make it to MacOS, though. But if you don't mind dual booting MacOS and Linux you will have nearly all of Steam games playable on your machine.
@@DiThi I'd imagine any ARM based OS could be configured to work on Mac silicon with working drivers and optimizations. But the OS itself should boot on apple silicon, so you could always find out.
It won't make its way to macOS. Valve abandoned Mac not because of the architecture (They dropped Mac support before Apple silicon came out), but because Apple forced them to use Metal instead of Vulkan and Valve simply decided it wasn't worth it. The good news is that Apple themselves are working on their Proton equivalent, the Game Porting Toolkit (GPTK). It works pretty well.
Its not for Linuxarm. its for MacOS/iOS, Gaben still talks to TimmyC. Steam needs a compatibility layer for Apple Silicon AppleARM. MacOS is still the second largest platform.
I could just point and laugh, but I'll be polite. You know the real kicker? Proton _had_ MacOS support in the early days, but Valve dropped it over Apple being uncooperative
That controller is way too small to be ergonomic and comfortable. The Steam Deck controls are great because of the overall form factor of the device, especially the symmetrical sticks. Shrinking it doesn’t seem like it would be a good experience.

She banned me for a stupid narcissistic reason.
I blame reddit for enabling such people and for making it impossible to get help in those situations. Reddit has become a worse, more toxic place cause of greedy management.
I've already thanked the new mods twice for engaging with the community and trying to clear up the mess. I'll do it again. I love that sub.
Very sorry to hear that, im glad the new mods are doing such a good job already. Lots of respect to them.
Leaving a comment to support fellow Steam Controller fans, I wish Valve would continue the Steam Controller series or at least revive the original, they are old and mine are starting to break down.
Could use this in a podcast format! New subscriber here: Would love to listen to this on the way to, or from, work. Whilst video context is great, the vocals are defo more important and as such could be great in podcast form
Great news roundup as always :)!
Valve is up there with Atlus as my favorite game company right now
The ARM Proton thing sounds so interesting
If you've already purchased HZD Complete Edition, you can upgrade to HZD Remastered for $10.
I found the on screen keyboard using both track pads to be surprisingly really good and fast
For the steam controller idea, would be great if you could split the controller like a joycon.
Getting pc gaming away from windows will be a historic milestone for all pc gamers. But that’s just my opinion
Its something that needs to happen quick! And Valve should move to ARM asap
Y'all a bit late to the party..... Gaming has been moving away from Windows for a long time, we're just gaining pace.
@@Armand79th I definitely agree with you it just takes the right people to make it happen and influence it
9:00 Xbox 360 and Xbox One OEM chatpads are a must for me still.
Sparking zero is something deck players might wanna keep their eyes on. If we can fix the issues it could be a great game for it
So excited for this friday I'm getting a steam deck.
Lol. I shared a concept of that controller awhile back on Reddit and got so much hate. It was hilarious
Sold my LED for an OLED after a year of hardcore pc rts and strategy games still going strong.
This video was the first time I had even heard of a Emudeck machine. Guessing they were only advertising it on their website?
I’m still waiting on a steamOS release for all devices already. Bazzite is a phenomenal in between but I would still LOVE a legit Valve release.
Trackpads and keyboard would be epic!
Image games running on ARM, already got my AYN Odin 2 mini. This would make this device the definite end game handheld!
I would laugh so hard if there would be a valve phone that actually runs steam games and is still a smartphone.
That could be so much fun
it is time for a steamdeck 2 - the minipcs are getting faster and faster.
maybe not this upcoming headset, but perhaps they plan on an VR OS based on arch for ARM based headsets, something that can have an app store dedicated to VR programs. steam itself would be for vr games.
What is that Wipeout / F-Zero like game that was being shown in the video and is it available on Steam? And thank you for the roundup. These news reports are always very informative and exciting.
I sorely miss physical, clicky buttons on electronics, especially phones. Touch screens just never really "hit" for me.
Good thing I JUST bought a steam deck
I've managed to get some pretty good results on the new Gyro To Joystick [Beta] mode. It does depend heavily on how the game's controller settings, though. Mostly being able to change the deadzone to 0 and response curve to linear.
9:32 as a Swype typer I'd like a little touchscreen instead of a keyboard. Then that would almost make it a deck again...
I think Valve is working secretly in some way to make Proton work in ARM, with some Steam ARM build, and they are waiting for some new ARM leap like snapdragon elite for desktops. To launch all new Steam Deck 2 with huge battery life…
imagine valve releasing a Steam mobile library where you can run PC games on Mobile, running natively on Android/IOS without needing a PC/Laptop
Valve what happens when you have a guy who truly loves games and development in gaben and also smart enough to make money.
That’s a cool ad.
Most games don't run on Linux, they run through Wine which translates DirectX commands, Proton is a fancy version of Wine.
Great video
Valve is so cool. Did you know they still update the steam link hardware ?
Yea, Ive been waiting for something that's close to xbox controller but with track-pads and keyboard added in so I can switch to desktop stuff while still on same controller.
I don’t even think I’d want the remaster of HZD. I like the looks of the old version better personally but if it has better overall fidelity I might pick it up.
And what was wrong with original steam controller? I'm totally in love with that thing. Playing with steam controller is in my opinion very good. The first game I tried was Dark Souls 3 and the game experience was just amazing.
Wish Valve would do a trade in option for the LCD - OLED

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration.
Sweet video
My Steamdeck is great...almost play it more then my Series X
Listen up Tim Sweeney, projects like THIS is where that "30%" goes to.
I never use my Steam Deck after getting an ROG Ally. Steam NEEDS to find out how to make it so we can play ALL our games.
Can’t wait for them to officially release easy to install steam OS for other windows handhelds. I want to get an ally x and just install steam os on it
Steamdeck with moonlight/sunshine for in home streaming is a game changer.
We really need for Valve to partner with 8bitdo on a steam controller.
I hope all of this ARM work makes its way to MAC. I would love to play my entire Steam library on my MacBook. There is no competition when it comes to Apple Silicon performance while on battery. I had my desktop at home running windows, but for mobile I would love to use my Mac.
I wouldn't use the word performance, but efficiency I would agree.
If they are developing a steam phone I am gonna buy it!
Please put links to the sources for everything in the description please.
Bazzite for other handhelds I think will create some good competition do to the fact some games are not compatible with anti cheat
I would love a new steam controller
Wait so if I buy horizon zero down on cdkeys or other key reseller will I be able to update it to the remastered? 50£ is mental
Yep. Valve is the goat. ❤
i really want to buy one this winter
Steamed Pis. What a time to be alive.
Nice 🎉
That controller is way too small to be ergonomic and comfortable. The Steam Deck controls are great because of the overall form factor of the device, especially the symmetrical sticks. Shrinking it doesn’t seem like it would be a good experience.
Thanks to steamdeck I use arch btw
Bro Gyro to joystick is not that bad you just gotta configure the sensitivity. Also depends on how the game uses joystick sensitivity
Now that we have GabeBoy color its time for GabeBoy advance.
My gamesir g8 will be put to good use after this. There are a few PC games I could play on my phone for sure
You guys know that the steam deck mock up controller has been out before that guy made it. It was an joke at first. Maybe like an year ago?
